Permeabilities and diffusion coefficients of various gases, Ar, N2, O2, CO2, CH4, C2H4, C3H8 and C4H10, were measured for Water-swollen gel cellophane membranes. No dependence of permeabilities on gas pressure below 1 atm was found. It was observed that the permeability coefficients were not related linearly to the coefficients in bulk water. For the two states of water in the membrane, an analytical method is presented to estimate the diffusion coefficients and the solubilities in free water and non-freezing water. It was found that the diffusion coefficients in non-freezing water were lower than those in free water, and the solubilities in non-freezing water were higher than in free water for all gases studied except CO2 and C2H4, which gave reverse results.  相似文献

We have determined the intrinsic gas transport properties of He, H2, O2, N2, CH4, and CO2 for a 6FDA-durene polyimide as a function of pressure, temperature and aging time. The permeability coefficients of O2, N2, CH4, and CO2 decrease slightly with increasing pressure. The pressure-dependent diffusion coefficients and solubility coefficients are consistent with the dual-sorption model and partial immobilization. All the gas permeabilities increase with temperature and their apparent activation energies for permeation increase with increasing gas molecular sizes in the order of CO2, O2, N2, and CH4.The percentages of permeability decay after 280 days of aging are 22, 32, 36, 40, 42, and 30% for He, H2, O2, N2, CH4, and CO2, respectively. Interestingly, except for H2 (kinetic diameter of 2.89 Å), the percentages of permeability decay increase exactly in the order of He (kinetic diameter of 2.6 Å), CO2 (3.30 Å), O2 (3.46 Å), N2 (3.64 Å), and CH4 (3.80 Å). The apparent activation energies of permeation for O2, N2, CH4, and CO2 increase with aging because of the increases in activation energies of diffusion and the decreases in solubility coefficients. The activation-energy increase for diffusion is probably due to the decrease in polymeric molar volume because of densification during aging. The reduction in solubility coefficient indicates the available sites for sorption decreasing with aging because of the reduction of microvoids and interstitial chain space.  相似文献

Permeability coefficients P for He, O2, N2, CO2 CH4, C2H4, C2H6, and C3H8 in 12 different silicone polymer membranes were determined at 35.0°C and pressures up to 9 atm. Values of P for CO2, CH4, and C3H8 were also determined at 10.0 and 55.0°C. In addition, mean diffusion coefficients D and solubility coefficients S were obtained for CO2, CH4, and C3H8 in 6 silicone polymers at 10.0, 35.0, and 55.0°C. Substitution of increasingly bulkier functional groups in the side and backbone chains of silicone polymers results in a significant decrease in P for a given penetrant gas. This is due mainly to a decrease in D , whereas S decreases to a much lesser extent. Backbone substitutions appear to have a somewhat lesser effect in depressing P than equivalent side-chain substitutions. The selectivity of a silicone membrane for a gas A relative to a gas B, i.e., the permeability ratio P (A)/P (B), may increase or decrease as a result of such substitutions, but only if the substituted groups are sufficiently bulky. The selectivity of the more highly permeable silicone membranes is controlled by the ratio S (A)/S (B), whereas the selectivity of the less permeable membranes depends on both the ratios D (A)/D (B) and S(A)/S(B). The permeability as well as the selectivity of one silicone membrane toward CO2 were significantly enhanced by the substitution of a fluorine-containing side group that increased the solubility of CO2 in that polymer.  相似文献

Permeability coefficients have been measured for CO2, CH4, C2H4, and C3H8 in polyethylene membranes at temperatures of 5, 20, and 35°C and at applied gas pressures of up to 30 atm. The temperature and pressure dependence of the permeability coefficients was represented satisfactorily by an extension of Fujita's free-volume model of diffusion of small molecules in polymers. The results of the present steady-state permeability measurements provide further support for the conclusion reached from previous unsteady-state diffusivity measurements that Fujita's model is applicable to the transport of small molecules, such as CO2, CH4, C2H4, and C3H8, in polyethylene. It was previously thought that this model is applicable only to the transport of larger molecules, such as of organic vapors, in polymers.  相似文献

Permeability coefficients for Ar, SF6, CF4, and C2H2F2 (1,1-difluoroethylene) in polyethylene membranes were determined from steady-state permeation rates at temperatures from 5 to 50°C, and at applied gas pressures of up to 15 atm. The temperature and pressure dependence of the permeability coefficients was represented satisfactorily by an extension of Fujita's free volume model of diffusion of small molecules in polymers. The parameters required by this model were determined from independent absorption (diffusivity) measurements with the above gases in polyethylene rods. The present work confirms the results of previous studies with CO2, CH4 C2H4 and C3H8 in polyethylene.  相似文献

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most commonly used membrane material for the separation of condensable vapors from lighter gases. In this study, a composite PDMS membrane was prepared and its gas permeation properties were investigated at various upstream pressures. A microporous cellulose acetate (CA) support was initially prepared and characterized. Then, PDMS solution, containing crosslinker and catalyst, was cast over the support. Sorption and permeation of C3H8, CO2, CH4, and H2 in the prepared composite membrane were measured. Using sorption and permeation data of gases, diffusion coefficients were calculated based on solution‐diffusion mechanism. Similar to other rubbery membranes, the prepared PDMS membrane advantageously exhibited less resistance to permeation of heavier gases, such as C3H8, compared to the lighter ones, such as CO2, CH4, and H2. This result was attributed to the very high solubility of larger gas molecules in the hydrocarbon‐based PDMS membrane in spite of their lower diffusion coefficients relative to smaller molecules. Increasing feed pressure increased permeability, solubility, and diffusion coefficients of the heavier gases while decreased those of the lighter ones. At constant temperature (25°C), empirical linear relations were proposed for permeability, solubility, and diffusion coefficients as a function of transmembrane pressure. C3H8/gas solubility, diffusivity, and overall selectivities were found to increase with increasing feed pressure. Ideal selectivity values of 9, 30, and 82 for C3H8 over CO2, CH4, and H2, respectively, at an upstream pressure of 8 atm, confirmed the outstanding separation performance of the prepared membrane. Steady-state permeability coefficients have been measured for equimolar mixtures of CO2-C2H4, CO2-C3H8, and C2H4-C3H8, as well as for a mixture of 74.9 mol % CO2 and 25.1 mol % C2H4 in polyethylene membranes. The measurements were made at 20, 35, and 50°C and at pressures of up to 28 atm. Each component of the permeating mixtures studied had the effect of increasing the permeability coefficient for the other component. Furthermore, at equal partial pressures and at the same temperature, the component exhibiting the highest solubility in the polymer had the largest effect in increasing the permeability coefficient of the other component. This behavior is in agreement with the predictions of a free-volume model for the permeation of gas mixtures proposed by Fang, Stern, and Frisch. From a quantitative viewpoint, the permeability coefficients for the components of the mixtures agreed, on the average, to better than 25% with the predicted values. The theoretical permeability coefficients can be estimated from the model by using parameters determined with the pure components only.  相似文献

Sorption of He, H2, N2, O2, Ar, CH4, C2H6, and C2H6 in polybutadiene and the dilation of the polymer due to sorption of the gases are investigated over the pressure range 0-50 atm at 25°C. For CO2 the measurements are made at temperatures ranging from 15 to 80°C. Partial molar volumes of the gases in the polymer are determined. The temperature dependence of partial molar volume is discussed on the basis of the data for CO2. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameters of CO2, C2H4, and C2H6 are also estimated.  相似文献

The transport properties of silicone rubber are reported at 35°C for a series of pure gases (He, N2, CH4, CO2, and C2H4) and gas mixtures (CO2/CH4 and N2/CO2) for pressures up to 60 atm. The effects of pressure and concentration on the permeability of various gases have been analyzed to consider plasticization and hydrostatic compression effects. Over an extended pressure and concentration range, both compression of free volume and eventual plasticization phenomena were observed for the various penetrants. In pure component studies, plasticization effects tended to dominate hydrostatic compression effects for the more condensible penetrants (C2H4 and CO2) while the reverse was true for the low sorbing N2 and He. These issues are discussed in terms of penetrant diffusion coefficients versus pressure to clarify the interplay between the opposing effects for the penetrants of markedly different solubilities. Additional insight into the somewhat complex interplay of the plasticization and hydrostatic compression effects are given by mixed gas permeation results. It was found that the permeability of nitrogen in a 10/90 CO2/N2 and a 50/50 CO2/N2 mixture was increased by the presence of CO2 because the plasticizing nature of CO2 is able to overcome nitrogen's compression effect.  相似文献

The solubilities of He, H2, N2, O2, CO2, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, and n‐C4H10 were determined at 35°C and pressures up to 27 atmospheres in a systematic series of phase separated polyether–polyamide segmented block copolymers containing either poly(ethylene oxide) [PEO] or poly(tetramethylene oxide) [PTMEO] as the rubbery polyether phase and nylon 6 [PA6] or nylon 12 [PA12] as the hard polyamide phase. Sorption isotherms are linear for the least soluble gases (He, H2, N2, O2, and CH4), convex to the pressure axis for more soluble penetrants (CO2, C3H8, and n‐C4H10) and slightly concave to the pressure axis for ethane. These polymers exhibit high CO2/N2 and CO2/H2 solubility selectivity. This property appears to derive mainly from high carbon dioxide solubility, which is ascribed to the strong affinity of the polar ether linkages for CO2. As the amount of the polyether phase in the copolymers increases, gas solubility increases. The solubility of all gases is higher in polymers with less polar constituents, PTMEO and PA12, than in polymers with more polar PEO and PA6 units. CO2/N2 and CO2/H2 solubility selectivity, however, are higher in polymers with higher concentrations of polar repeat units. The sorption data are complemented with physical characterization (differential scanning calorimetry, elemental analysis, and wide angle X‐ray diffraction) of the various block copolymers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The permeability of poly(dimethylsiloxane) [PDMS] to H2, O2, N2, CO2, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, CF4, C2F6, and C3F8, and solubility of these penetrants were determined as a function of pressure at 35 °C. Permeability coefficients of perfluorinated penetrants (CF4, C2F6, and C3F8) are approximately an order of magnitude lower than those of their hydrocarbon analogs (CH4, C2H6, and C3H8), and the perfluorocarbon permeabilities are significantly lower than even permanent gas permeability coefficients. This result is ascribed to very low perfluorocarbon solubilities in hydrocarbon‐based PDMS coupled with low diffusion coefficients relative to those of their hydrocarbon analogs. The perfluorocarbons are sparingly soluble in PDMS and exhibit linear sorption isotherms. The Flory–Huggins interaction parameters for perfluorocarbon penetrants are substantially greater than those of their hydrocarbon analogs, indicating less favorable energetics of mixing perfluorocarbons with PDMS. Based on the sorption results and conventional lattice solution theory with a coordination number of 10, the formation of a single C3F8/PDMS segment pair requires 460 J/mol more energy than the formation of a C3H8/PDMS pair. A breakdown in the geometric mean approximation of the interaction energy between fluorocarbons and hydrocarbons was observed. These results are consistent with the solubility behavior of hydrocarbon–fluorocarbon liquid mixtures and hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon gas solubility in hydrocarbon liquids. From the permeability and sorption data, diffusion coefficients were determined as a function of penetrant concentration. Perfluorocarbon diffusion coefficients are lower than those of their hydrocarbon analogs, consistent with the larger size of the fluorocarbons. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Pure gas solubility and permeability of H2, O2, N2, CO2, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, CF4, C2F6, and C3F8 in poly(1‐trimethylsilyl‐1‐propyne) (PTMSP) were determined as a function of pressure at 35°C. Permeability coefficients of the perfluorinated penetrants are approximately an order of magnitude lower than those of their hydrocarbon analogs, and lower even than those of the permanent gases. In striking contrast to hydrocarbon penetrants, PTMSP permeability to fluorocarbon penetrants decreases with increasing penetrant size. This unusual size‐sieving behavior in PTMSP is attributed to low perfluorocarbon solubilities in PTMSP coupled with low diffusion coefficients relative to those of their hydrocarbon analogs. In general, perfluorocarbon penetrants are less soluble than their hydrocarbon analogs in PTMSP. The difference in hydrocarbon and perfluorocarbon solubilities in high free volume, hydrocarbon‐rich PTMSP is much smaller than in hydrocarbon liquids and liquidlike polydimethylsiloxane. The low solubility of perfluorocarbon penetrants is ascribed to the large size of the fluorocarbons, which inhibits their dissolution into the densified regions of the polymer matrix and reduces the number of penetrant molecules that can be accommodated in Langmuir sites. From the permeability and sorption data, diffusion coefficients were calculated as a function of penetrant concentration. With the exception of H2 and the C3 analogs, all of the penetrants exhibit a maximum in their concentration‐dependent diffusion coefficients. Resolution of diffusion coefficients into a mobility factor and a thermodynamic factor reveals that it is the interplay between these two terms that causes the maxima. The mobility of the smaller penetrants (H2, O2, N2, CH4, and CO2) decreases monotonically with increasing penetrant concentration, suggesting that the net free volume of the polymer–penetrant mixture decreases as additional penetrant is added to PTMSP. For larger penetrants mobility either: (1) remains constant at low concentrations and then decreases at higher penetrant concentrations (C2H6, CF4, and C2F6); (2) remains constant for all concentrations examined (C3H8); or (3) increases monotonically with increasing penetrant concentration (C3F8). Presumably these results reflect the varying effects of these penetrants on the net free volume of the polymer–penetrant system. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of amine-containing polyurethanes and poly(urethane-urea)s based on 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and either poly(ethylene glycol) of molecular weights 400 or 600 were prepared as gas separation membranes. The amine functional groups of N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and/or tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) were introduced into the hard segment as a chain extender. The gas transport data of He, H2, O2, N2, CH4 and CO2 in these polymer membranes were determined by using the Barrer's high-vacuum technique and the time-lag method. The restriction of chain mobility has been shown by the formation of hydrogen bonding in the soft segment and hard-segment domains, resulting in the increase in the density, glass transition temperature of soft segments (Tgs). The separation mechanism of various gas pairs used in industrial processes is also discussed. Effect of pressure on permeability of the gases above and below Tgs was studied. It was found that the gas permeability increased or decreased with upstream pressure above Tgs, and should be described by a modified free-volume model. On the other hand, the condensable CO2 exhibits a minimum permeability at a certain upstream pressure below Tgs. The permeability of He and H2 were pressure independent above and below the Tgs.  相似文献

The effect of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) on gas permeabilities and selectivities was investigated in a series of miscible cellulose acetate (CA) blend membranes. The permeabilities of CO2, H2, O2, CH4, N2 were measured at temperatures from 30 to 80°C and pressures from 20 to 76 cmHg using a manometric permeation apparatus. It was determined that the blend membrane having 10 wt% PEG20000 exhibited higher permeability for CO2 and higher permselectivity for CO2 over N2 and CH4 than those of the membranes which contained 10% PEG of the molecular weight in the range 200–6000. The CA blend containing 60 wt% PEG20000 showed that its permeability coefficients of CO2 and ideal separation factors for CO2 over N2 reached above 2 × 10−8 [cm3 (STP) cm/cm2 s cmHg] and 22, respectively, at 70°C and 20 cmHg. Based on the data of gas permeability coefficients, time lags and characterization of the membranes, it is proposed that the apparent solubility coefficients of all CA and PEG blend membranes for CO2 were lower than those of the CA membrane. However, almost all the blend membranes containing PEG20000 showed higher apparent diffusivity coefficients for CO2, resulting in higher permeability coefficients of CO2 with relation to those of the CA membrane. It is attributed to the high diffusivity selectivities of CA and PEG20000 blend membranes that their ideal separation factors for CO2 over N2 were higher than those of the CA membrane in the range 50–80°C, even though the ideal separation factors of almost all PEG blend membranes for CO2 over CH4 became lower than those of the CA membrane over nearly the full range from 30° to 80°C.  相似文献

Polymerization of norbornene bearing Si(CH3)3 groups in the five position with the opening of double bonds was performed. By accurate selection of the ratios catalyst/co-catalyst and monomer/catalyst the samples with increased molecular mass (about 400,000) were obtained. Transport parameters of this, addition type poly(trimethylsilyl norbornene) (PTMSN) were measured using the gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods for different gases (H2, He, O2, N2, CO2, CH4, C2H6, C3H8 and n-C4H10). Temperature dependence of the permeability coefficients (P) indicated that low activation energies of permeation (EP) and diffusion (ED) are characteristic for PTMSN. In some cases (CO2, C2H6) negative EP values were observed. Thermodynamics of vapor sorption in this polymer was studied using the inverse gas chromatography method. It was shown that PTMSN is characterized by very large solubility coefficients S similar to those of poly(trimethylsilyl propyne) (PTMSP). The comparison of the P, D, and S values of these highly permeable polymers showed that the greater permeability of PTMSP is determined by the larger D values. Application of different approaches for the determination of the size of microcavities in PTMSN indicated that this polymer is characterized by large size of microcavity (800–1200 ?3).  相似文献

The effect of stereoregularity on gas permeation properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was investigated. The gas permeability coefficients for He, H2, O2, N2, Ar, CH4, and CO2 at 35°C near atmospheric pressure have been measured for three different PMMAs. Apparent diffusion and solubility coefficients were obtained from time lag data, and these were compared with data for a commercial PMMA previously reported. The permeability, solubility, and diffusion coefficients increase as the content of syndiotactic sequences increases. These observations are consistent with more dense packing of the isotactic form in the glassy state that stems in part from its lower glass transition temperature. The transport behavior for a 50:50 isotactic/syndiotactic blend was also studied. These so-called stereocomplexes exhibit permeation behavior comparable to other weakly interacting miscible blend systems.  相似文献

The objective of the present work was to study the reforming of simulated natural gas via the nonthermal plasma process with the focus on the production of hydrogen and higher hydrocarbons. The reforming of simulated natural gas was conducted in an alternating current (AC) gliding arc reactor under ambient conditions. The feed composition of the simulated natural gas contained a CH4:C2H6:C3H8:CO2 molar ratio of 70:5:5:20. To investigate the effects of all gaseous hydrocarbons and CO2 present in the natural gas, the plasma reactor was operated with different feed compositions: pure CH4, CH4/He, CH4/C2H6/He, CH4/C2H6/C3H8/He and CH4/C2H6/C3H8/CO2. The results showed that the addition of gas components to the feed strongly influenced the reaction performance and the plasma stability. In comparisons among all the studied feed systems, both hydrogen and C2 hydrocarbon yields were found to depend on the feed gas composition in the following order: CH4/C2H6/C3H8/CO2 > CH4/C2H6/C3H8/He > CH4/C2H6/He > CH4/He > CH4. The maximum yields of hydrogen and C2 products of approximately 35% and 42%, respectively, were achieved in the CH4/C2H6/C3H8/CO2 feed system. In terms of energy consumption for producing hydrogen, the feed system of the CH4/C2H6/C3H8/CO2 mixture required the lowest input energy, in the range of 3.58 × 10−18–4.14 × 10−18 W s (22.35–25.82 eV) per molecule of produced hydrogen.  相似文献

Polyimide membranes derived from 6FDA-DAM:DABA and 6FDA-6FpDA:DABA copolymers have been used to separate 50/50 CO2/CH4 mixtures and multicomponent synthetic natural gas mixtures at 35 °C and feed pressures up to 55 atm. For 6FDA-DAM:DABA 2:1 membranes the effects of thermal annealing and covalent crosslinking are decoupled with respect to effects on permeabilities and selectivity. Crosslinking at 295 °C with 1,4-butylene glycol and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol increases CO2 permeabilities by factors of 4.1 and 2.4, respectively, at 20 atm feed pressure, without a loss in selectivity, relative to crosslinking at 220 °C. Thermal annealing and crosslinking also reduce CO2 plasticization effects. Crosslinking of DABA-containing copolymers, therefore, can produce membranes with tunable transport properties that offer significantly higher performance with better plasticization-resistance than that reported in the literature for the commercial polymers Matrimid® and cellulose acetate for CO2 removal from natural gas mixtures. Separation of complex mixtures containing CO2, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, and C4H10 or toluene results in a significant decrease of the CO2 permeability, but only a moderate decrease in the CO2/CH4 selectivity.  相似文献

The photolysis of iodine has been studied in the gas phase using laser flash photolysis at 6943 A. The dependence of the quantum yield on the pressure has been investigated in the range 0.1–1000 atm for several inert gases. For Kr, Xe, O2, CO2, CH4, C2H6 and C3H8 a decrease of the quantum yield with increasing pressure was obtained; for He, Ne, Ar and H2 no effect could be observed. These results may correspond to a photolycitc cage effect of iodine in the gas phase analogous to that known from the liquid phase.  相似文献

The goal of this work is to explore new polyimide materials that exhibit both high permeability and high selectivity for specific gases. Copolyimides offer the possibility of preparing membranes with gas permeabilities and selectivities not obtainable with homopolyimides. A series of novel fluorinated copolyimides were synthesized with various diamine compositions by chemical imidization in a two-pot procedure. Polyamic acids were prepared by stoichiometric addition of solid dianhydride in portions to the diamine(s). The gas permeation behavior of 2,2′-bis(3,4′-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride(6FDA)-2,6-diamine toluene (2,6-DAT)/1,3-phenylenediamine (mPDA) polyimides was investigated. The physical properties of the copolyimides were characterized by IR, DSC and TGA. The glass transition temperature increased with increase in 2,6-DAT content. All the copolyimides were soluble in most of the common solvents. The gas permeability coefficients decreased with increasing mPDA content. However, the permselectivity of gas pairs such as H2/N2, O2/N2, and CO2/CH4 was enhanced with the incorporation of mPDA moiety. The permeability coefficients of H2, O2, N2, CO2 and CH4 were found to decrease with the increasing order of kinetic diameters of the penetrant gases. 6FDA-2,6-DAT/mPDA (3:1) copolyimide and 6FDA-2,6-DAT polyimide had high separation properties for H2/N2, O2/N2, CO2/CH4. Their H2, O2 and CO2 permeability coefficients were 64.99 Barrer, 5.22 Barrer, 23.87 Barrer and 81.96 Barrer, 8.83 Barrer, 39.59 Barrer, respectively, at 35°C and 0.2 MPa (1 Barrer = 10−10 cm3 (STP)·cm·cm−2·s−1·cmHg−1) and their ideal permselectivities of H2/N2, O2/N2 and CO2/CH4 were 69.61, 6.09, 63.92 and 53.45, 5.76, 57.41, respectively. Moreover, all of the copolyimides studied in this work exhibited similar performance, lying on or above the existing upper bound trade-off lines between permselectivity and permeability. They may be utilized for commercial gas separation membrane materials. __________ Translated from Acta Polymerica Sinica, 2008, 8 (in Chinese)  相似文献
