SYNTHESIS OF ACETIC ACID BY ISOMERIZATION OF METHYL FORMATE

A novel route for the isomerization of methyl formate to aceticacid was investigated by examining the nature of the metal catalysts,promot-ers and solvents under mild CO pressure.Both palladium and cobalt com-pounds in the N-methyl pyrrolidone solvent were highly efficient catalysts.     

STUDIES ON MECHANIS OF PHOTOSENSITIZED ISOMERIZATION OF NORBORNADIENE DERIVATIVES

Using acridine dyes as sensitizers,the photoisomerization of threenorbornadiene derivatives was investigated.The valence isomerization of nor-bornadiene derivatives(Ⅰ_a,Ⅰ_b,Ⅰ_c)gave their corresponding isomers of quadri-cyclane(Ⅱ_a,Ⅱ_b,Ⅱ_c)operating with relatively high efficiency in an electrontransfer mode.Their quantum yields of isomerization were determined and thereaction mechanism was discussed.

KINETIC STUDIES ON THE POLYMERIZATION OF ACRYLONITRILE INITIATED BY METALLIC MAGNESIUM-NITRIC ACID SYSTEM

This article reports the polymerization kinetics of acrylonitrile initiated by metallic magnesiumnitric acid system. The rate of polymerization is independent of the amount of magnesium used; when the concentration of nitric acid is higher than acrylonitrile, the equation of polymerization kinetics may be expressed asR_p =1.91×10~5e~(-15000)/RT[Mg]~0 [AN]~(2.2) [HNO_3]~(0.45)The result of copolymerization of acyrlonitrile and methyl acrylate supports a free-radical mechanism.

INHIBITIVE ACTION OF INORGANIC COMPOUND ON CORROSION OF ALUMINIUM IN HYDROCHLORIC ACID

The inhibitive action of CaSO_4 towards corrosion of aluminium in 1 mol/L HCl hasbeen inveetigated by using fluorometrio and weight loss techniques.The results show thatthe inhibitor exhibits an outstanding function of inhibition,especially at higher tempe-ratures,and it was found to be predomiantly of cathodic rate control.Ths mechanism ofinhibition and the effect of CdSO_4 on the corrosion kinetics are also discussed.

STUDIES ON THE ACTIVITY COEFFICIENTS OF NON-ELECTROLYES IN AQUEOUS SALT SOLUTIONS Ⅲ. THR EFFECTS OF SALTS OF FATTY ACIDS ON THE SOLUBILITIES OF CAPROIC ACID IN WATER

The solubilities of caproic acid in aqueous solutions of sodium salts of fivefatty acids (C_1 to C_5) have been measured at 25℃. All these salts increase thesolubilities of caproic acid. The reason for salting-in is due to partial displacement of the salt by thecaproic acid producing a new acid. But the new acid may distribute itself betweenthe aqueous salt, solution phase and the caproic acid phase thus rendering the actualsolubilities less than the calculated values.     

STUDIES ON THE KINETICS OF PHOTOPOLYMERIZATION OF ACRYLONITRILE INITIATED BY ANILINE

The dependence of the rate of polymerization on the aniline concentration in the photopolymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by aniline was studied.The rate of polymerization of acrylonitrile increased with increasing of the aniline concentration and showed a maximum at first, then showed another increase after a minimum.This phenomenon was explained with the extinction coefficient of aniline at 313 nm,334 nm and 365 nm wavelengths.Similar results were obtained for the aniline derivatives.Therefore, the initiator exponents in the photopolymerization varies with the different concentrations of initiator and the square-root dependence can be obtained only at certain low concentrations, i.e. with low absorbance.

Baimuxinol, a 4-hydroxymethyl agarofuran isolated from Aquilaria Sinensis, was synthsizd. The stereoselectivity of catalytic hydrogenation of dehydrobaimuxino and its derivatives was studied.     

STUDY ON KINETICS OF THE PHASE-TRANSFER CARBONYLATION OF BENZYL CHLORIDE CATALYZED BY DICOBALT-OCTACARBONYL

Reaction kinetics of CO_2(CO)_8-catalyzed carbonylation of benzyl chloride was studied in a liquid-liquid two-phase system(water/p-xylene). The disappearance rate of benzyl chloride is found to fit a pseudo first order kinetics law when the carbon monoxide pressure is kept constant. The observed rate constant is directly proportional to the amount of Co_2(CO)_8, PhCH_2N~+(CH_3)_3Cl~- and NaOH. It is shown that the rate-limiting step is the cleavage of the acylcobalt carbonyl [PhCH_2COCo(CO)_4] by PhCH_2N~+(CH_3)_3OH~- at the liquid-liquid interface. According to the experimental kinetic results, the reaction mechanism is suggested and the reaction rate equation is derived.

STUDY ON DIRECT HYDROLYSIS OF METHYL FORMATE TO FORMIC ACID

Both batch reactor and continuous tubular reactor were designed for the hydrolysis of methylformate to formic acid.By the former device,the effects of some reaction conditions,such as reactiontemperature,pressure,water/ester ratio and the addition of methanol and formic acid into the startingmaterial,on the induction period,the equilibrium time and the hydrolysis conversion of methyl formatewere investigated.By the latter device,as the length/diameter ratio of the reaction tube was large,itwas similar to an ideal plug flow reactor.The results obtained from the two reactors on the samereaction were compared.     

STUDIES ON THE HYDROGENATION OF METHYL ACRYLATE CATALYZED BY Pd/DVB CROSSLINKED POLY-(N-VINYL PYRROLIDONE)

Many kinds of dispersed Pd (0) supported on cross-linked poly (N-vinyl pyrrolidone) were prepared and characterized by IR and X-ray diffraction. Their hydrogenation properties of methyl acrylate have been examined. Experimental results indicate that the hydrogenation rate will reach a maximum as the degree of crosslinking increases to a certain point. The catalytic activity of the catalysts is closely related to the preparation condition and the particle size of Pd of the catalysts. Some other factors which affect the catalytic properties have also been studied.
