A turbulent axisymmetric air jet impinging on a square cylinder mounted on a flat plate has been studied experimentally. Turbulence statistics and flow’s topology were investigated. When the surface was heated through uniform heat flux, local heat transfer coefficient was measured. The jet from a long round pipe, 75 pipe diameters (D) in length, at Reynolds number of 23,000, impinged vertically on the square cylinder (3D × 3D × 43D). Measurements were performed using particle image velocimetry, flow visualization using fluorescent dye and infrared thermography. The flow’s topology demonstrated a three-dimensional recirculation after separating from the square cylinder and a presence of foci between the bottom corner and the recirculation’s detachment line. The distribution of heat transfer coefficient was explained by the influence of these flow’s structures and the advection of kinetic energy. On the impingement wall of the square cylinder, a secondary peak in heat transfer coefficient was observed. Its origin can be attributed to very pronounced shear production coupled with the external turbulence coming from the free jet.  相似文献

Two-dimensional normal impinging jet flowfields, with or without an upper plate, were analysed by employing an implicit bidiagonal numerical method developed by Lavante and Thompkins Jr. The Jones–Launder K–? two-equation turbulent model was employed to study the turbulent effects of the impinging jet flowfield. The upper plate surface pressure, the ground plane pressure and other physical parameters of the momentum flowfield were calculated at various jet exit height and jet inlet Reynolds numbers. These results were compared with those of Beam and Warming's numerical method, Hsiao and Chuang, and others, along with experimental data. The potential core length of the impinging jet without an upper plate is longer than that of the free jet because of the effects of the ground plane, while the potential core length of the impinging jet with an upper plate is shorter than that of the free jet because of the effects of the upper plate. This phenomenon in the present analysis provides a fundamental numerical study of an impinging jet and a basis for further analysis of impinging jet flowfields on a variable angle plate.  相似文献

The present paper investigates the dynamics of a laminar plane jet impinging on a flat plate in a channel. An experimental parametric study is carried out to determine the flow regimes at different levels of confinement and Reynolds numbers. For very confined jets, the flow is steady whatever the Reynolds number. The overall structure of the flow is symmetric with respect to the jet axis and is characterized by the presence of recirculation zones at the channel walls. The dynamics is radically different for less confined jets. Above a critical Reynolds number, the flow bifurcates in the form of an oscillating flapping mode of the impinging jet. Analyses of the experimental results provide with a quantitative characterization of this regime in terms of amplitude, wavelength and frequency. This self-oscillating bifurcated flow induces strong sweepings of the target plate by the jet and intense vortex dipole ejections from the impacted wall. Such a regime is expected to be particularly useful in the enhancement of the local heat transfer at relatively low cost in terms of flow rate.  相似文献

The impingement of an axisymmetric underexpanded ideal gas jet on a flat surface is investigated through numerical simulations. Different injection conditions, characterized by the nozzle pressure ratio (NPR), have been considered and for each, several standoff distances were studied. The study was conducted using the commercial finite volume general purpose code Fluent®. The numerical results are presented in terms of Mach number and static pressure to characterize the structure of the flow. Furthermore, the influence of the standoff distance upon the position and diameter of Mach disk is analysed. Some results are compared with literature data and good agreement is obtained.  相似文献

The paper presents numerical predictions of a turbulent axisymmetric jet impinging onto a porous plate, based on a finite volume method of solving the Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible air jet with the K–ε turbulence model. The velocity and pressure terms of the momentum equations are solved by the SIMPLE (semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equation) method. In this study, non-uniform staggered grids are used. The parameters of interest include the nozzle-to-wall distance and the suction velocity. The results of the present calculations are compared with available data reported in the literature. It is found that suction effects reduce the boundary layer thickness and increase the velocity gradient near the wall.  相似文献

The self-excited oscillation of a large aspect ratio planar jet impinging on a flat plate is investigated experimentally at a single transonic jet velocity to clarify the effect of varying the jet thickness on pattern of jet oscillation and frequency of resulting acoustic tone. The study has been performed for a series of jet thicknesses, 1 mm to 4 mm, each of which is tested for the complete range of plate position, i.e. impingement distance, over which acoustic tones are generated. The results reveal that the jet oscillation is controlled by a fluid-dynamic mechanism for small impingement distances, where the hydrodynamic flow instability controls the jet oscillation without any coupling with local acoustic resonances. At larger impingement distances, a fluid-resonant mechanism becomes dominant, in which one of the various hydrodynamic modes of the jet couples with one of the resonant acoustic modes occurring between the jet nozzle and the impingement plate. Within the fluid-resonant regime, the acoustic tones are found to be controlled by the impingement distance, which is the length scale of the acoustic mode, with the jet thickness having only minor effects on the tone frequency. Flow visualization images of the jet oscillation pattern at a constant impingement distance show that the oscillation occurs at the same hydrodynamic mode of the jet despite a four-fold increase in its thickness. Finally, a feedback model has been developed to predict the frequency of acoustic tones, and has been found to yield reasonable predictions over the tested range of impingement distance and nozzle thickness.  相似文献

The flow and temperature fields of a turbulent impinging jet are rather complex. In order to accurately describe the flow and heat-transfer process, two important factors that must be taken into account are the turbulence model and the wall function. Several turbulence models, including κ–? turbulence models, κ–ω turbulence models, low-Re turbulence models, the κ–κl–ω turbulence model, the Transition SST turbulence model, the V2F turbulence model and the RSM turbulence model, are examined and compared to experimental data. Furthermore, for the near wall region, various wall functions are presented for comparison and they include the standard wall function, the scale wall function, the non-equilibrium wall function and the enhanced wall function. The distribution features of velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and Nusselt number are determined in order to provide a reliable reference for the multiphase impinging jet in the future.  相似文献

The qualities of a DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) and a PANS (Partially-Averaged Navier–Stokes) hybrid RANS/LES model, both based on the kω RANS turbulence model of Wilcox (2008, “Formulation of the kω turbulence model revisited” AIAA J., 46: 2823–2838), are analysed for simulation of plane impinging jets at a high nozzle-plate distance (H/B = 10, Re = 13,500; H is nozzle-plate distance, B is slot width; Reynolds number based on slot width and maximum velocity at nozzle exit) and a low nozzle-plate distance (H/B = 4, Re = 20,000). The mean velocity field, fluctuating velocity components, Reynolds stresses and skin friction at the impingement plate are compared with experimental data and LES (Large Eddy Simulation) results. The kω DES model is a double substitution type, following Davidson and Peng (2003, “Hybrid LES–RANS modelling: a one-equation SGS model combined with a kω model for predicting recirculating flows” Int. J. Numer. Meth. Fluids, 43: 1003–1018). This means that the turbulent length scale is replaced by the grid size in the destruction term of the k-equation and in the eddy viscosity formula. The kω PANS model is derived following Girimaji (2006, “Partially-Averaged Navier–Stokes model for turbulence: a Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes to Direct Numerical Simulation bridging method” J. Appl. Mech., 73: 413–421). The turbulent length scale in the PANS model is constructed from the total turbulent kinetic energy and the sub-filter dissipation rate. Both hybrid models change between RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes) and LES based on the cube root of the cell volume. The hybrid techniques, in contrast to RANS, are able to reproduce the turbulent flow dynamics in the shear layers of the impacting jet. The change from RANS to LES is much slower however for the PANS model than for the DES model on fine enough grids. This delays the break-up process of the vortices generated in the shear layers with as a consequence that the DES model produces better results than the PANS model.  相似文献

The turbulent kinetic energy budget in the wake generated by a high lift, low-pressure two-dimensional blade cascade of the T106 profile was investigated experimentally using hot-wire anemometry. The purpose of this study is to examine the transport mechanism of the turbulent kinetic energy and provide validation data for turbulence modeling. Point measurements were conducted on a high spatial resolution, two-dimensional grid that allowed precise derivative calculations. Positioning of the probe was achieved using a high accuracy traversing mechanism. The turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) convection, production, viscous diffusion and turbulent diffusion were all obtained directly from experimental measurements. Dissipation and pressure diffusion were calculated indirectly using techniques presented and validated by previous investigators. Results for all terms of the turbulent kinetic energy budget are presented and discussed in detail in the present work.  相似文献

The QUICKER scheme extended for non-uniform rectangular grid systems has been applied to predict the turbulent offset jet flows. Computational results obtained with the QUICKER scheme are compared with those from the skew-upwind and the hybrid schemes. Computational results include the reattachment length, the velocity profile, the axial velocity decay curve, and the shear stress distribution. In the sense of an overall agreement with the experimental data, the QUICKER scheme is found to be superior to the other two schemes. Boundary conditions are carefully set up to account for various flow conditions. Special attention has been given to the set-up of entrainment boundary condition. It is emphasized that the numerical diffusion due to streamline-to-grid skewness far exceeds the turbulent diffusion in offset jet flows; therefore, a numerical scheme that would minimize the numerical diffusion is a prerequisite for a better prediction of the turbulent offset jet flows.  相似文献

A series of experiments has been conducted in which a pulsed air jet is impinged upon a heated surface for the purpose of enhancing heat transfer relative to the corresponding steady air jet. Traditional variables such as jet to plate spacing, Reynolds number, and pulse frequency have been investigated. One additional flow variable – the duty cycle – representing the ratio of pulse cycle on-time to total cycle time is introduced and shown to be significant in determining the level of heat transfer enhancement. Specifically, heat transfer enhancement exceeding 50% is shown for a variety of operating conditions. In each case, the duty cycle producing the best heat transfer is shown to depend upon each of the other flow parameters. Recommendations are made for further experimentation into optimizing the duty cycle parameter for any particular application.  相似文献

In the present study, the effects of a directed co-flow on the process of mixture jet with variable density have been investigated numerically. Three density ratios were considered namely R=0.55, 1.5 and 1.52, respectively, for binary mixtures methane-air, carbon dioxide-air and propane-air. The directed co-flow preserves its axial symmetry at the inlet and its direction varies between +20° and –20°. In addition, the k – model and model equation of the algebraic non-equal scales are used to investigate effects of the variable density in axisymmetric turbulent jet. Comparative studies are presented in the case of the calculations of the average variables such as the longitudinal velocity, species concentration and the turbulent kinetic energy. The results obtained indicate that the directed co-flow with positive angles enhances considerably the mixing.  相似文献

Experimental results are presented for characteristics of impingement heat transfer caused by three slot jets. Experimental values were obtained for the dimensionless distance H = 0.5−3, dimensionless pitch P = 6−16, and Reynolds number Re = 500−8000. For laminar impinging flow, they were compared with numerical results. For turbulent impinging flow, two peaks of the local Nusselt number were obtained behind the second nozzle. The position of the second peak approached the nozzle as the space between nozzle and impinged surface decreased. The average Nusselt number between the central and second nozzles was determined from the ratio P/H and the Reynolds number based on the pitch of the nozzles.  相似文献

A numerical simulation of a rectangular surface jet is performed at a Reynolds number of Rej=4400. The global parameters of the jet e.g. maximum velocity decay, jet surface normal and lateral spread rates, entrainment, jet momentum flux and turbulent momentum flux are in agreement with several other studies reported in the literature. It is shown that the mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles scale with the maximum local streamwise velocity and jet half width in the surface normal and lateral directions. The current simulation provides balance, explicitly calculated budgets for the turbulence kinetic energy, Reynolds normal and shear stresses. The surface jet develops a thin layer of fast moving fluid in the lateral direction near the surface. This layer is called the ‘surface current’. It has been suggested that the surface current arises due to the Reynolds stress anisotropy in the near surface region. The current study shows that this explanation is incomplete. The turbulence production for the Reynolds stress in the lateral direction is negative, which can drive the mean flow in the lateral direction. The higher level of negative production in the near surface region is responsible for the development of the surface current.  相似文献

The present work describes the experimental investigation of reacting wakes established through fuel injection and staged premixing with air in an axisymmetric double cavity arrangement, formed along three concentric disks, and stabilized in the downstream vortex region of the afterbody. The burner assembly is operated with a co-flow of swirling air, aerodynamically introduced upstream of the burner exit plane, to allow for the study of the interaction between the resulting partially premixed recirculating afterbody flames with the surrounding swirl. At low swirl the primary afterbody disk stabilizes the partially premixed annular jet in the downstream reacting wake formation region. As swirl increases, a system of two successive vortices emerges along the axis of the developing wake; the primary afterbody vortex is cooperating with an adjacent, swirl induced, central recirculation zone and this combination further promotes turbulent mixing in the hot wake.Complementary measurements of the counterpart isothermal turbulent velocity fields provided important information on the near wake aerodynamics under the interaction of the variable swirl and the double cavity produced annular jet stabilized by the afterbody. Under reacting conditions, measurements of turbulent velocities, temperatures and statistics together with an evaluation of the exhaust emissions were performed using LDV, thin digitally-compensated thermocouples and gas analyzers. A selected number of lean and ultra-lean flames were investigated by regulating the injected fuel and the air supply ratio, while the influence of the variation of the imposed swirl on wake development, flame characteristics and emission performance was documented for constant fuel injections. The differences and similarities between the present partially premixed stabilizer and other types of axisymmetric configurations are also highlighted and discussed.
