A new setup is proposed to produce and investigate heavy neutron-rich nuclei located along the neutron closed shell N = 126. This “blank spot” of the nuclear map can be reached neither in fusion–fission reactions nor in fragmentation processes widely used nowadays for the production of exotic nuclei. The present limits of the upper part of the nuclear map are very close to stability while the unexplored area of heavy neutron-rich nuclides along the neutron closed shell N = 126 is extremely important for nuclear astrophysics investigations and, in particular, for the understanding of the r-process of astrophysical nucleosynthesis. A new way was recently proposed for the production of these nuclei via low-energy multi-nucleon transfer reactions. The estimated yields of neutron-rich nuclei are found to be rather high in such reactions and several tens of new nuclides can be produced, for example, in the near-barrier collision of 136Xe with 208Pb. This setup could definitely open a new opportunity in the studies at heavy-ion facilities and will have significant impact on future experiments.  相似文献

It is shown that the multinucleon transfer reactions in low-energy collisions of heavy ions may be used for production of new neutron-rich nuclei at the "northeast" part of the nuclear map along the neutron closed shell N=126 which plays an important role in the r process of nucleosynthesis. More than 50 unknown nuclei might be produced in such reactions (in particular, in collision of 136Xe with 208Pb) with cross sections of not less than 1 microb.  相似文献

Multinucleon transfer processes in low-energy heavy ion collisions open a new field of research in nuclear physics, namely, production and studying properties of heavy neutron rich nuclei. This not-yet-explored area of the nuclear map is extremely important for understanding the astrophysical nucleosynthesis and the origin of heavy elements. Beams of very heavy U-like ions are needed to produce new long-living isotopes of transfermium and superheavy elements located very close to the island of stability. The calculated cross sections are high enough to perform the experiments at available accelerators.Beams of medium-mass ions (such as 136Xe, 192Os, 198Pt) can be used for the production of neutron rich nuclei located along the neutron closed shell N = 126 (the last waiting point) having the largest impact on the astrophysical r-process. The Low-energy multinucleon transfer reactions is a very efficient tool also for the production and spectroscopic study of light exotic nuclei. The corresponding cross sections are 2 or 3 orders of magnitude larger as compared with high energy fragmentation reactions.  相似文献

Experiments are described and main results presented on the synthesis and decay properties of superheavy nuclides, produced in fusion reactions induced by a 48Ca-beam on heavy actinide targets. In such reactions neutron-rich nuclei are formed. For them, according to theory, an abrupt enhancement of stability due to nuclear shell effects is expected. The decay properties of the new nuclides are compared with calculations of theoretical models, which predict the existence of “islands of stability” in the region of hypothetical superheavy elements.

A survey of experimental results obtained at GANIL (Caen, Prance) on the study of the properties of very neutron-rich nuclei (Z = 6–20, A = 20–60) near the neutron drip line and resulting in an appearance of further evidence for the new magic number N = 16 is presented. Very recent data on mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei at GANIL and some characteristics of binding energies in this region are discussed. Nuclear binding energies are very sensitive to the existence of nuclear shells and together with the measurements of instability of doubly magic nuclei 10He and 280 they provide information on changes in neutron shell closures of very neutron-rich isotopes. The behaviour of the two-neutron separation energies S2n derived from mass measurements gives a very clear evidence for the existence of the new shell closure N = 16 for Z = 9 and 10 appearing between 2s1/2 and ld3/2 orbitals. This fact, strongly supported by the instability of C, N and O isotopes with N > 16, confirms the magic character of N = 16 for the region from carbon up to neon while the shell closure at N = 20 tends to disappear for Z ≤ 13. Decay studies of these hardly accessible short-lived neutron-rich nuclei from oxygen to silicon using the in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy are also reported.  相似文献

The neutron dripline has presently been reached only for the lightest nuclei up to the element oxygen. In this region of light neutron-rich nuclei, scattering experiments are feasible even for dripline nuclei by utilizing high-energy secondary beams produced by fragmentation. In the present article, reactions of high-energy radioactive beams will be exemplified using recent experimental results mainly derived from measurements of breakup reactions performed at the LAND and FRS facilities at GSI and at the S800 spectrometer at the NSCL. Nuclear and electromagnetically induced reactions allow probing different aspects of nuclear structure at the limits of stability related to the neutron-proton asymmetry and the weak binding close to the dripline. Properties of the valence-neutron wave functions are studied in the one-neutron knockout reaction, revealing the changes of shell structure when going from the beta-stability line to more asymmetric loosely bound neutron-rich systems. The vanishing of the N = 8 shell gap for neutron-rich systems like 11Li and 12Be, or the new closed N = 14, 16 shells for the oxygen isotopes are examples. The continuum of weakly bound nuclei and halo states can be studied by inelastic scattering. The dipole response, for instance, is found to change dramatically when going away from the valley of stability. A redistribution of the dipole strength towards lower excitation energies is observed for neutron-rich nuclei, which partly might be due to a new collective excitation mode related to the neutron-proton asymmetry. Halo nuclei, in particular, show strong dipole transitions to the continuum at the threshold, being directly related to the ground-state properties of the projectile. Finally, an outlook on future experimental prospects is given.  相似文献

Reaching the limits of nuclear stability offers unique opportunities to understand basic nuclear properties. New shell structures close to the driplines can change the existence of neutron-rich nuclei. A new search for 16Be confirmed the previous limit for particle stable Be isotopes at A=14. Single proton knock-out reactions offer the potential for more sensitive searches of very weakly bound nuclei. In order to extend the knowledge of the neutron dripline beyond Z=8 requires new accelerator developments. The proposed new rare isotope accelerator has the potential to push the limit of the neutron dripline to at least Z=25.  相似文献

Experimental studies of neutron drip line nuclei are introduced. The neutron drip line in the oxygen-magnesium region has been explored by the projectile fragmentation of a 48Ca beam. New neutron-rich isotopes, 34Ne and 37Na, have been observed together with some evidence for the particle instability of 33Ne and 36Na. Recent data on mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei at GANIL and some characteristics of binding energies in this region are discussed. Nuclear binding energies are very sensitive to the existence of nuclear shells, and together with the measurements of instability of doubly magic nuclide 28O, they provide information on changes in neutron shell closures of very neutron-rich isotopes from carbon up to calcium. The conclusion about a rearrangement in neutron shell closures is given. The spectroscopic measurements can reveal details of the underlying microscopic structures; in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy is an effective tool to check for shell closures. The results on the γ-ray energies of the first 2+ level in even-even nuclei for the range N=12–32 are discussed. The strength of N=20 and N=28 shells is variable in the region from carbon up to magnesium.  相似文献

In fusion reactions of40Ar with isotopes of Ho, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf and Ta, cross sections for the production of proton-rich evaporation-residues near the 126 neutron shell were measured. This first comprehensive study of very fissile spherical residues reveals a surprisingly low stabilizing influence of the sphericalN=126 shell on the survival probability. The experimental results are compared with evaporation calculations. Conclusions for the production of superheavy nuclei are drawn.  相似文献

Heavy neutron-rich nuclei close to N = 126 were produced by fragmentation of a 1A GeV 208Pb beam at the FRS at GSI. The β-decay half-lives of 7 nuclides have been determined using a novel numerical analysis method. The half-lives of 202,199Ir, 200,199Os and 196Re are reported for the first time. The comparison of the data with model calculations provides indications on the importance of first-forbidden transitions on the β-decay of nuclei around N = 126 and Z < 82.  相似文献

The fusion reactions are studied in the central collisions 82Se+ + 134Ba and 82Se+ + 138Ba by the improved isospin-dependent quantum molecular-dynamics model, where the nucleus 138Ba has a closed neutron shell N = 82 . Comparing the shell correction energies and fusion probabilities of these two reactions with the ones of other asymmetric or more symmetric reaction systems that form the same compound nuclei, we find the dependence of the fusion reaction on the nuclear shell structure of the colliding nuclei. The experimental data of the fusion probabilities are described well by the present model. The result suggests that the neutron shell closure N = 82 promotes fusion.  相似文献

The fission decay of highly neutron-rich uranium isotopes is investigated which shows interesting new features in the barrier properties and neutron emission characteristics in the fission process. 233U and 235U are the nuclei in the actinide region in the beta stability valley which are thermally fissile and have been mainly used in reactors for power generation. The possibility of occurrence of thermally fissile members in the chain of neutron-rich uranium isotopes is examined here. The neutron number N = 162 or 164 has been predicted to be magic in numerous theoretical studies carried out over the years. The series of uranium isotopes around it with N = 154–172 are identified to be thermally fissile on the basis of the fission barrier and neutron separation energy systematics; a manifestation of the close shell nature of N = 162 (or 164). We consider here the thermal neutron fission of a typical representative 249U nucleus in the highly neutron-rich region. Semiempirical study of fission barrier height and width shows that 250U nucleus is stable against spontaneous fission due to increase in barrier width arising out of excess neutrons. On the basis of the calculation of the probability of fragment mass yields and the microscopic study in relativistic mean field theory, this nucleus is shown to undergo exotic decay mode of thermal neutron fission (multi-fragmentation fission) whereby a number of prompt scission neutrons are expected to be simultaneously released along with the two heavy fission fragments. Such properties will have important implications in stellar evolution involving r-process nucleosynthesis.   相似文献

Clustering in nuclei is discussed putting emphasis on the investigation of the role of nuclear clustering in neutron-rich nuclei. The subjects we discuss include clustering in neutron-rich Be, B and C isotopes, clustering in the island of inversion around N = 20, and clustering in the region with A ≈ 40. Be isotopes present us typical examples of clustering in neutron-rich nuclei not only in their ground band states but also in their excited band states, for which we show the analyses based on antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD). Clustering in Be isotopes near neutron dripline is intimately related to the breaking of the neutron magic number N = 8. In this connection we report our study about the possible relation of the clustering with the breaking of the neutron magic number N = 20 in the island of inversion including 32Mg and 30Ne. Our discussion is not only about the positive parity states but also about negative parity states. Recently in the latter half of sd shell and in the pf shell many excited rotational bands with large deformation have been found to exist. Since the first excited K π = 0+ and K π = 0- bands in 40Ca have been regarded as constituting inversion doublet bands having the 36Ar + α structure, and since the first excited K π = 0- band in 44Ti has been concluded to have 40Ca + α structure through the α transfer reaction and by using the unique α optical potential on 40Ca, it is important to investigate the role of α clustering in these newly-found rotational bands with large deformation. We will report the AMD study about this problem.

For elements with Z > 100 only neutron deficient isotopes have been synthesized so far. The “northeast area” of the nuclear map can be reached neither in fusion-fission reactions nor in fragmentation processes. The large mass transfer reactions in near barrier collisions of heavy (U-like) ions seem to be the only reaction mechanism allowing us to produce neutron rich heavy nuclei including those located at the superheavy(SH) island of stability and unexplored area of heavy neutron-rich nuclides. This study is extremely important for nuclear astrophysical investigations and, in particular, for the understanding of the r process. In this paper within the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics (ImQMD) model combining with the statistical-evaporation model, the large mass transfer reactions, like 238U+238U have been studied. The charge and mass distributions of transiently formed primary fragments are investigated within the ImQMD model and de-excitation processes of those primary fragments are described by the statistical decay model. The mass distribution of the final products in 238U+238U collisions is obtained and compared with the recent experimental data. Through compared the formation cross sections of transfermium element 106 by three reactions of 136Xe+248Cm, 48Ca+248Cm and 238U+248Cm, it is explored that the large mass transfer reactions, like U+U are very benefit for the production of SH nuclei.  相似文献

We present the results of the experiments aimed at producing hypothetical long-lived superheavy elements located near the spherical shell closures with Z>-114 and N>-172. For the synthesis of superheavy nuclei a combination of neutron-rich reaction partners, such as 244Pu and 248Cm targets and a 48Ca projectile have been used. The sensitivity of the present experiment exceeded by more than two orders of magnitude previous attempts to synthesize superheavy nuclides in reactions of 48Ca projectiles with actinide targets. We observed new decay sequences of genetically linked α-decays terminated by spontaneous fission. The decay properties of the synthesized nuclei are consistent with the consecutive α-decays originating from the parent nuclides 288,289114, produced in the 3n and 4n-evaporation channels, and 292116 — in the 4n-evaporation channel with cross sections of about a picobarn. The present observations can be considered an experimental evidence of the existence of the “island of stability” of superheavy elements and are discussed in terms of modern theoretical approaches.  相似文献

The present work reviews the properties of the neutron-rich isotopes near the closed shells N = 20 and N = 28. The changes in nuclear structure appearing as one goes away from the β-stability line are discussed. The location of the neutron drip line and questions about the stability of nuclides with Z ≥ 8 are considered in connection with the weakening or even vanishing of the shell effects at the magic numbers 20 and 28, and the discovery of the new neutron magic numbers at N = 16 and N = 32. These properties are extremely interesting from the point of view of laser experiments as well as for all other experimental methods giving access to this region.  相似文献

This talk consists of two parts. The first one presents the results of investigations performed in 1998-2000 in Dubna on the synthesis of superheavy nuclei in reactions induced by 48Ca ions. The radioactive decay properties of the nuclei, indicating a considerable increase in the α-decay and spontaneous fission half-lives of the isotopes of elements 110-116 when approaching the closed neutron shell at N = 184, are given. In the second part the possible ways of advancing into the region of more neutron-rich nuclei, using stable and radioactive ion beams, are discussed. Since so far no intense radioactive ion beams are available, some experiments with stable beams are considered as a test for the suggested ideas. A partial decay scheme for 0.1 sec 98Rb has been deduced from γ-singles, γ-multispectra ana γγ coincidence measurements taken at the OSTIS mass-separator system at the Institut Laue-Langevin. The low-lying levels of 98Sr follow the energy level systematics of the even-AN = 60 isotones. The onset of nuclear deformation in even-A neutron-rich Sr isotopes appears to occur at mass 98, as the first 2+ level energy drops from the nearly constant value of about 800 keV for masses 90–96 to 144 keV at mass 98. Energy level systematics indicate that a transition in the nuclear structures of the more neutron-rich nuclei near mass 100 occurs rather sharply at neutron number N = 60.  相似文献
