Na Cl O has been widely used to restore membrane flux in practical membrane cleaning processes, which would induce the formation of toxic halogenated byproducts. In this study, we proposed a novel heatactivated peroxydisulfate(heat/PDS) process to clean the membrane fouling derived from humic acid(HA). The results show that the combination of heat and PDS can achieve almost 100% recovery of permeate flux after soaking the HA-fouled membrane in 1 mmol/L PDS solution at 50 °C for 2 h, which is att...  相似文献

Reverse osmosis (RO) is being increasingly used in treatment of domestic wastewater secondary effluent for potable and non-potable reuse. Among other solutes, dissolved biopolymers, i.e., proteins and polysaccharides, can lead to severe fouling of RO membranes. In this study, the roles of RO membrane surface properties in membrane fouling by two model biopolymers, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and sodium alginate, were investigated. Three commercial RO membranes with different surface properties were tested in a laboratory-scale cross-flow RO system. Membrane surface properties considered include surface roughness, zeta potential, and hydrophobicity. Experimental results revealed that membrane surface roughness had the greatest effect on fouling by the biopolymers tested. Accordingly, modified membranes with smoother surfaces showed significantly lower fouling rates. When Ca2+ was present, alginate fouled RO membranes much faster than BSA. Considerable synergistic effect was observed when both BSA and alginate were present. The larger foulant particle sizes measured in the co-existence of BSA and alginate indicate formation of BSA-alginate aggregates, which resulted in greater fouling rates. Faster initial flux decline was observed at higher initial permeate flux even when the flux was measured against accumulative permeate volume, indicating a negative impact of higher operating pressure.  相似文献

Porous hydrophobic polypropylene (PP) membranes were subjected to the surface modification by the γ-ray induced graft copolymerization with hydrophilic 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The structural changes and surface morphologies of the modified PP membranes were characterized by a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis (EA) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Peroxides produced from γ-ray irradiation were determined by a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) method and the surface hydrophilicities of membranes were measured by a static contact angle measurement. The contact angle of the modified membranes reduced with the degree of grafting (DG) of HEMA onto the membrane surface, and it decreased up to about half of that before modification. The permeation behaviors of all membranes were investigated by a bovine serum albumin (BSA) filtration experiment. As a result, the DG of the modified membrane increased with the reaction time. However, in the case of irradiation dosage it showed the maximum value at 20 kGy. Also, the modified membrane showed a higher solution flux, lower BSA adsorption, and the better flux recovery after cleaning than that of the unmodified membrane. Particularly, 40.6% grafted membrane showed a two-fold increase in a BSA solution flux, 62% reduction in total fouling and three-fold increase in flux recovery after chemical cleaning.  相似文献

Although macromolecular fouling of microfiltration membranes is one of the critical factors governing the performance of these filtration processes, there is still little fundamental understanding of the underlying phenomena that influence the initiation, rate, and extent of fouling. We have obtained experimental data for the flux decline during the stirred cell filtration of different commercial preparations of bovine serum albumin (BSA) through asymmetric polyethersulfone microfiltration membranes. The fouling characteristics of these commercial solutions varied substantially, with the flux decline directly related to the technique utilized to initially precipitate and prepare the BSA. Prefiltration of BSA solutions prior to microfiltration substantially reduced their fouling tendency, with the degree of improvement increasing as the prefiltration was performed through smaller molecular weight cut-off membranes. The protein solutions were also characterized using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), with the fouling tendency of the different BSA preparations highly correlated with the concentration of BSA dimers and other high molecular weight species present in these BSA solutions. These results suggest that BSA fouling of these microfiltration membranes is associated with the deposition of trace quantities of aggregated and/or denatured BSA, with these fouling species serving as initiation sites for the continued deposition of bulk protein.  相似文献

A new random copolymer was synthesized by reacting hydrophilic N,N-dimethyl-N-methacryloxyethyl-N-(3-sulfopropyl) (DMMSA) with hydrophobic butyl methacrylate (BMA) through a conventional radical polymerization. The as-prepared sulfobetaine copolymer (DMMSA–BMA) was blended with polyethersulfone (PES) to fabricate antifouling ultrafiltration membrane for BSA separation. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of blend membranes revealed concentration of sulfobetaine groups at the membrane surfaces that endowed the membrane with higher hydrophilicity and better antifouling property. For the membrane with 8.0 wt% DMMSA–BMA copolymer concentration (No. 5), irreversible fouling has been considerably reduced and the flux recovery rate of the blend membrane reached as high as 82.8%. Furthermore, the blend membrane could effectively resist BSA fouling in a wide pH range from 4.0 to 8.0.  相似文献

The importance of solute adsorption in the biofouling membrane has been clearly verified for the performance of membrane bioreactor (MBR). In order to quantify the mechanism of static adsorption in biofouling during of MBR process, we characterize membrane biofouling caused by model solutions containing a protein (bovine serum albumin, BSA), a humic substance (humic acid, HA) and a polysaccharide (alginic acid, Alg) on commercial hydrophilic polyethersulfone (PES) membrane. For static adsorption experiments, membranes were immersed in well-defined model solutions in three temperatures (298, 308 and 318 K) to obtain equilibrium data. To determine the characteristic parameters for this process, 7 isotherm models were applied to the experimental data. Three error analysis methods; the coefficient of nonlinear regression (R(2)), the sum of the squared errors (SSE) and standard deviation of residuals (S(yx)), were used to evaluate the data and determine the best fit isotherm for each model solutions. The error values demonstrated that the Sips isotherm model provided the best fit to the experimental data. AFM images were used for determination of changes in membrane surface after adsorption. These images confirmed the results obtained from adsorption isotherm study. Thermodynamic parameters such as standard free energy (Δ(r)G(θ)), enthalpy (Δ(r)H(θ)) and entropy (Δ(r)S(θ)) changes were determined; these adsorption processes were found to be feasible and endothermic but not spontaneous. The distribution of the substances adsorbed on PES surface were more chaotic than that in the aqueous solutions. Parameters obtained in this study can be used to determine the "fouling potential" of a given feed stream and a membrane.  相似文献

In this study, hydrophilic and fouling-resistant polysulfone (PS) membranes were fabricated using the phase inversion method to reduce membrane fouling caused by microalgal culture. The Pluronic F-127 polymer, which is used as a hydrophilic co-polymer, was added to the membranes to improve the membrane properties. Characteristic specifications of the fabricated membranes, such as morphology, surface roughness, chemical structures and hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, were studied using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), attenuated total reflection-fourier infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and contact angle devices. According to the results obtained, it was observed that, with the increase of the Pluronic F-127 concentration in the membranes, the surface roughness of the membranes decreased and hydrophilicity and permeation fluxes increased notably. Furthermore, it was observed that the addition of the Pluronic F-127 polymer into the membranes reduced reversible/irreversible membrane fouling. Additionally, a characterisation of the fouled membranes was performed for the purpose of comprehensively understanding the membrane fouling mechanism caused by microalgal culture.  相似文献

Although an amount of research has reported that a flux minimum occurs at the isoionic/isoelectric points (pH 4.6-5.0) in the absence of salts in the ultrafiltration of bovine serum albumin (BSA), the real mechanism remains incompletely understood due to the lack of additional techniques in real time to detect the properties of deposited BSA (gel) layers formed during ultrafiltration (UF). An ultrasonic technique was developed as an analytical noninvasive tool to in situ investigate the properties of deposited BSA layers at pH 4.9 (isoionic or isoelectric point, IEP) and 6.9 during crossflow ultrafiltration. The membrane was a polysulfone (PSf) UF membrane with molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) 35 kDa. The feed used was 0.5 g/l BSA solution. Results show good correspondence between the ultrasonic signal responses and the development of BSA gel layers on the membranes. The deposit is thicker at pH 6.9 than at pH 4.9. However, the deposited gel layers are more compressible at pH 4.9 than at pH 6.9. The flux decline is mainly controlled by the density (packing) of the deposit layer. At pH 6.9, protein mainly deposits on the membrane surface. Around the isoelectric point, protein absorbs within and on the membranes. A functional relationship between acoustic signals and fouling resistance exists. The fouling resistance is mainly attributed to pore blocking or pore constriction.  相似文献

The effects of surface water pretreatment on membrane fouling and the influence of these different fouling types on the rejection of 21 neutral, positively and negatively charged pharmaceuticals were investigated for two nanofiltration membranes. Untreated surface water was compared with surface water, pretreated with a fluidized anionic ion exchange and surface water, pretreated with ultrafiltration. Fouling the nanofiltration membranes with anionic ion exchange resin effluent, resulted in the deposition of a mainly colloidal fouling layer, with a rough morphology. Fouling the nanofiltration membranes with ultrafiltration permeate, resulted in the deposition of a smooth fouling layer, containing mainly natural organic matter. The fouling layer on the nanofiltration membranes, caused by the filtration of untreated surface water, was a combination of both colloids and natural organic matter.Rejection of pharmaceuticals varied the most for the membranes, fouled with the anionic ion exchange effluent, and variations in rejection were caused by a combination of cake-enhanced concentration polarisation and electrostatic (charge) effects. For the membranes, fouled with the other two water types, variations in rejection were smaller and were caused by a combination of steric and electrostatic effects.Changes in membrane surface hydrophobicity due to fouling, changed the extent of partitioning and thus the rejection of hydrophobic, as well as hydrophilic pharmaceuticals.  相似文献

The formation of deposit on the membrane surface (fouling) is one of the major operating problems of membrane distillation process. The influence of fouling on the performance of this process was investigated during the concentration of wastewater with proteins, bilge water, brines, and the production of demineralized water. The experiments were performed with polypropylene capillary membranes. The morphology and composition of the fouling layer were studied using Fourier transform infrared with diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with the energy dispersing spectrometry. Fouling with various intensity was observed in most of the studied cases. Permeate flux decline was mainly caused by an increase in the heat resistance of the fouling layer. However in the case of non-porous deposit, a magnitude of the permeate flux was also determined by a resistance of water transport through the deposit layer. It was found the deposits were formed not only on the membrane surface, but also inside the pores. Salt crystallization in the membrane pores besides their wetting, also caused the mechanical damage of the membrane structure. The intensity of the fouling can be limited by the pretreatment of feed and a selection of the operating conditions of membrane distillation.  相似文献

Hydrous manganese dioxide (HMO) nanoparticles incorporated cellulose acetate (CA) composite ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are prepared with the aim of improving the water permeation and BSA contaminant removal. The HMO nanoparticles are synthesized from manganese ion and characterized by FT‐IR, XRD, and FESEM. The effect of variation of HMO on CA membranes is probed using FT‐IR, EDAX, contact angle, SEM, and AFM analysis to demonstrate their chemical functionality, hydrophilicity, and morphology. CA/HMO membranes are showing the enhancement in pure water flux (PWF), water uptake, porosity, hydrophilicity, fouling resistance, BSA rejection, and flux recovery ratio (FRR). CA‐1 membrane displayed higher PWF (143.6 Lm2h?1), BSA rejection (95.9%), irreversible fouling (93.3%), and FRR (93.3%). Overall results confirmed that the CA/HMO nanocomposite UF membranes overcome the bottlenecks and shows potential for water treatment applications.  相似文献

Electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were used to gain insight into BSA fouling of the Neosepta CMX and AMX ion-exchange membranes (IEMs). EIS characterizations were made at concentrations above 0.1 M KCl because the conductance of the IEMs was higher than that of bulk solutions of concentration below 0.1 M KCl. Spectra, expressed in terms of dispersions of the conductance and capacitance with frequency, provided an enhanced indication of IEM fouling during separation processes. Bulk conductance measurements of the solution alone, membrane immersed in solution and fouled membrane immersed in solution showed good agreement with general theoretical predictions. Strong dispersions in capacitance were observed below 1 kHz for each of these configurations. Differences in the dispersions arising from fouling were identified by subtracting the impedance of the solution from those of unfouled and fouled IEMs in solution. The conductance and capacitance dispersions of fouled IEMs decreased with the accumulation of the BSA fouling layer on the surface.  相似文献

A serious problem faced during the application of membrane filtration in water treatment is membrane fouling by natural organic matter (NOM). The hydrophilicity, zeta potential and morphology of membrane surface mainly influence membrane fouling. The aim of the present study is to reveal the correlation between membrane surface morphology and membrane fouling by use of humic acid solution and to investigate the efficiency of backwashing by water, which is applied to restore membrane flux. Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) hollow fiber membranes were used in the present study. To obtain the membranes with various surface structures, membranes were prepared via both thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) and nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) by changing the preparation conditions such as polymer concentration, air gap distance and coagulation bath composition. Since the membrane material is the same, the effects of hydrophilicity and zeta potential on membrane fouling can be ignored. More significant flux decline was observed in the membrane with lower humic acid rejection. For the membranes with similar water permeability, the lower the porosity at the outer surface, the more serious the membrane fouling. Furthermore, the effect of the membrane morphology on backwashing performance was discussed.  相似文献

Fouling of ion exchange membranes in an electrodialysis process is highly sensitive to the concentration of a surfactant. To investigate the influence of the fouling on the process performance, an anion exchange membrane was characterized by electrochemical properties as well as physical and chemical properties. The fouling potential was then quantitatively analyzed using the membrane fouling index as a function of the surfactant concentration. It was observed that the fouling mechanism is initiated by the micelle formation. That is, most of SDBS molecules form a fouling layer on the membrane surface at a higher concentration than the critical micelle concentration. Also the SDBS fouling mechanisms caused by the fouling layer were examined by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The equivalent circuits show that the fouling potential of the system was increased by an additional layer, simultaneously increasing the electrical resistance to permeation of ions through the membrane. However, the SDBS fouling on the membrane was a reversible process.  相似文献

A novel membrane material based on random copolymer composed of poly(acrylonitrile-([3-(methacryloylamino)propyl]-dimethyl(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide)) (PAN–MPDSAH) was synthesized by the water phase suspension polymerization. The zwitterionic PAN-based membranes were prepared through blending PAN and PAN–MPDSAH copolymer by a phase inversion method. The zwitterionic PAN-based membranes have higher hydrophilicity and wettability, and lower protein adsorption in comparison with the control PAN membrane. Ultrafiltration experiments revealed that membrane fouling, especially irreversible membrane fouling, for the zwitterionic PAN-based membranes is remarkably reduced due to the incorporation of zwitterionic PMPDSAH segments on the membrane surfaces. Moreover, the reversible membrane fouling during ultrafiltration process can be easily washed away by simple water cleaning. The zwitterionic PAN-based membranes can run for a long time and be reused without significant decrease of separation performance.  相似文献

In this study, the glycerol solutions were fermented using Lactobacillus casei bacteria. The broths were pre-treated by microfiltration, followed by a further separation with nanofiltration. The latter process was carried out in two stages, using the NF270 and NF90 membranes, respectively. The concentrates thus obtained were enriched with citric acid (first stage) and then with lactic acid and glycerol (second stage). By means of SEM and AFM microscopy, as well as ATR-FTIR analysis, the intensity of membrane-fouling was studied. The colloidal fouling and bio-fouling caused a more than two-fold decrease in the permeate flux during microfiltration of the broth. This pre-treatment stage was effective, and a permeate turbidity of less than 0.2 NTU was obtained. However, the nanofiltration membranes exhibited a 30 % flux decline over the course of the process, mainly due to the organic fouling.  相似文献

An adsorption-crosslinking process of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was introduced to modify the surface of polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes for enhancement of their antifouling property. XPS and water contact angle measurement confirmed the obvious enhancement of surface hydrophilicity. Ultrafiltration results showed that the spreading of PVA chains over the hydrophobic membrane surface caused substantial but acceptable decrease on membrane flux. The fouling type analysis indicated that PVA adsorption effectively improved the antifouling property of PES membranes. With a PVA concentration of 0.5 wt% and three cycles of alternative adsorption-crosslinking, the total and irreversible fouling ratio of modified membranes were 0.38 and 0.22, respectively, much lower than those of control PES membrane (0.61 and 0.47), and the flux recovery ratio was increased accordingly. The long-term ultrafiltration experiment demonstrated the improvement of recycling property and the reliability of adsorption-crosslinking process.  相似文献

In order to improve the antifouling performance of PVDF membrane, a novel zinc sulfide/graphene oxide/polyvinylidene fluoride (ZnS/GO/PVDF) composite membrane was prepared by immersed phase inversion method. The surface morphology, crystal structure, photocatalytic activity, and antifouling property of the as‐prepared membranes were systematically studied. Results showed that the ZnS/GO/PVDF hybrid membranes were successfully fabricated with uniform surface. The hybrid membrane surface possessed higher hydrophilicity with water contact angle decreasing from 77.1° to 62.2°. The permeability of the hybrid membrane was therefore enhanced from 222.9 to 326.1 L/(m2 hour). Moreover, bovine serum albumin (BSA) retention experiment showed that the hybrid membrane separation was also promoted by 7.2%. The blending of ZnS and GO enhanced the hydrophilic and photocatalytic performances of PVDF membrane, which mitigated the membrane fouling effectively. This novel hybrid membrane could accelerate the practical application of photocatalytic technology in membrane separation process.  相似文献

The growing attention to forward osmosis (FO) membrane processes from various disciplines raises the demand for systematic research on FO membrane fouling. This study investigates the role of various physical and chemical interactions, such as intermolecular adhesion forces, calcium binding, initial permeate flux, and membrane orientation, in organic fouling of forward osmosis membranes. Alginate, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and Aldrich humic acid (AHA) were chosen as model organic foulants. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to quantify the intermolecular adhesion forces between the foulant and the clean or fouled membrane in order to better understand the fouling mechanisms. A strong correlation between organic fouling and intermolecular adhesion was observed, indicating that foulant–foulant interaction plays an important role in determining the rate and extent of organic fouling. The fouling data showed that FO fouling is governed by the coupled influence of chemical and hydrodynamic interactions. Calcium binding, permeation drag, and hydrodynamic shear force are the major factors governing the development of a fouling layer on the membrane surface. However, the dominating factors controlling membrane fouling vary from foulant to foulant. With stronger intermolecular adhesion forces, hydrodynamic conditions for favorable foulant deposition leading to cake formation are more readily attained. Before a compact cake layer is formed, the fouling rate is affected by both the intermolecular adhesion forces and hydrodynamic conditions. However, once the cake layer forms, all three foulants have very similar flux decline rates, and further changes in hydrodynamic conditions do not influence fouling behavior.  相似文献
