Here we describe the formation of precisely controlled corona-type nanopatterns on electroactive polymer precursor films using scanning probe microscopy (SPM) methods. The binary composition of electroactive groups in the polymer triggers the formation of corona-type nanopatterns at particular voltages and tip writing speeds through the electrooxidation of the polymer precursor film. Various parameters such as tip speed and applied bias were explored in the nanopatterning process, and the formation of a conductive nanopattern was investigated using conducting atomic force microscopy (C-AFM). The formation of the nanopattern was attributed to the flow of electrons from the AFM tip to the polymer film in a controlled electric field distribution. We also report a new method to distinguish the polymer composition and distribution of a polymer blend film by characterizing biasing differences in the patterning of a polymer film.  相似文献

The swelling of a polymer surface has been monitored in real time on the nanometer scale by atomic force microscopy (AFM). After modification by oxygen plasma treatment, poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) displays a characteristic nanostructured surface morphology consisting of high-lying features alternating with topographically depressed areas. Selective swelling of the least cross-linked, depressed areas after the adsorption of ambient water or water from saturated humid atmospheres was observed by tapping mode AFM operated in the attractive interaction regime. The swollen areas could be distinguished from the nonswollen ones by local variations in the sample indentation made by the AFM tip when imaging in the tapping mode repulsive interaction regime. Monitoring the swelling of the plasma-treated polymer surface provided a means to reveal the nanometer-scale heterogeneity that this type of treatment creates on the polymer surface, which is something that would not be possible otherwise. Measurement of AFM tip-sample adhesion forces evidenced rapid water adsorption onto the oxygen plasma-treated surface, supporting the idea of water-induced swelling. This high hydrophilicity was interpreted as arising from the incorporation of polar oxygen functionalities, as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).  相似文献

We have developed an orientation control technique for polymer molecules utilizing contact-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM). In this technique, the molecular chains were directly modified by scanning an AFM cantilever tip in contact with the film surface at the temperature just below its melting point. We call this process “modification scan”. Here, we applied this technique to poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) thin films on graphite and glass. We prepared a 75-nm thick copolymer crystalline film on graphite whose lamellar plane was perpendicular to the substrate (edge-on), and also prepared a film of the same thickness on glass whose lamellar plane was parallel to the substrate (flat-on). After applying this technique on both films, molecular chains were stretched and aligned to the modification scan direction, and new edge-on crystals were obtained, whose lamellar planes were well-aligned perpendicular to the modification scan direction.  相似文献

We demonstrate that the adsorption of cationic spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) on negatively charged mica substrates can be controlled in situ by the ionic strength of the suspension. The SPB used in our experiments consist of colloidal core particles made of polystyrene. Long cationic polyelectrolyte chains are grafted onto these cores that have diameters in the range of 100 nm. These particles are suspended in aqueous solution with a fixed ionic strength. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) in suspension as well as in air was used for surface characterization. In pure water the polymer particles exhibit a strong adhesion to the mica surface. AFM investigations of the dry samples show that the particles occupy the identical positions as they did in liquid. They were not removed by the capillary forces within the receding water front during the drying process. The strong interaction between the particles and the mica surface is corroborated by testing the adhesion of individual particles on the dried surface by means of the AFM tip: after a stepwise increase of the force applied to the surface by the AFM tip, the polymer particles still were not removed from the surface, but they were cut through and remained on the substrate. Moreover, in situ AFM measurements showed that particles which adsorb under liquid in a stable manner are easily desorbed from the surface after electrolyte is added to the suspension. This finding is explained by a decreasing attractive particle-substrate interaction, and the removal of the particles from the surface is due to the significant reduction of the activation barrier of the particle desorption. All findings can be explained in terms of the counterion release force.  相似文献

Atomic force microscopy is a technique capable to study biological recognition processes at the single‐molecule level. In this work we operate the AFM in a force‐scan based mode, the jumping mode, where simultaneous topographic and tip–sample adhesion maps are acquired. This approach obtains the unbinding force between a well‐defined receptor molecule and a ligand attached to the AFM tip. The method is applied to the avidin–biotin system. In contrast with previous data, we obtain laterally resolved adhesion maps of avidin–biotin unbinding forces highly correlated with single avidin molecules in the corresponding topographic map. The scanning rate 250 pixel s?1 (2 min for a 128×128 image) is limited by the hydrodynamic drag force. We are able to build a rupture‐force distribution histogram that corresponds to a single defined molecule. Furthermore, we find that due to the motility of the polymer used as spacer to anchor the ligand to the tip, its direction at rupture does not generally coincide with the normal to the tip–sample, this introduces an appreciable error in the measured force.  相似文献

We report observations of localized growth on the (1014) surface of single-crystal CaCO3 in supersaturated solutions while scanning with the tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM). At low contact forces, AFM scanning strongly enhances deposition along preexisting steps. This enhancement increases rapidly with increasing solution supersaturation, and is capable of filling in multilayer etch pits to produce defect-free surfaces at the resolution of the AFM. Attempts to achieve similar deposition rates in the absence of scanning require high supersaturations that produce three-dimensional crystal nuclei, which are important defects. Localized deposition produced by drawing the AFM tip back and forth across step edges can produce monolayer deposits extending well over a micron from the scanned area. These tip-induced deposits provide convincing evidence for the importance of ledge diffusion in calcite crystal growth.  相似文献

We have estimated the molecular weight, Mn, and polydispersity, PDI, of densely grafted poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes using a novel atomic force microscopy (AFM) approach. When compression of a polymer brush induced adsorption of multiple chains to an AFM tip, the resulting decompression force profile exhibited a maximum attractive force at a separation, Lm, that decayed to zero with increasing tip-sample separation. We have found that the separation Lm approximates the average contour length, Lc, determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The detection of a decaying attractive force at separations larger than Lc suggests that chains of above average length sequentially break free from the tip as they are stretched away from the grafting surface. The shape of the decompression profile in this region approximately paralleled the cumulative weight fraction of the grafted chains determined by GPC. The fraction of chains of a given molecular weight determined from a single force curve fit a log-normal distribution, having a standard deviation that provided an estimate of the PDI. We have characterized two PNIPAM brushes by this AFM technique as well as by GPC coupled to a multiangle laser light-scattering detector (MALLS). The values obtained by AFM-(1) Mn,AFM = (3.8+/-0.5) x 10(4), PDI,(AFM) = 1.3+/-0.1 and (2) Mn,AFM = (9.4+/-1.4) x 10(4), PDI,(AFM) = 1.3+/-0.1-agreed quite well with the corresponding GPC/MALLS values of (1) Mn,GPC = 4.77 x 10(4), PDI,GPC = 1.33 and (2) Mn,GPC = 9.49 x 10(4), PDI = 1.35. This technique requires only a single force curve to obtain a statistical distribution of contour lengths and provides a novel method for estimating the Mn and PDI of appropriate uniformly grafted dense polymer layers.  相似文献

The surface morphology of thin molecularly imprinted polymer films has been studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films were produced by spin coating onto glass substrates and examined as a function of host polymer, imprinting template, casting solvent, spin‐coater rotation speed and post‐production treatment. It was observed that the gross features of such films are template controlled. The fine structure is determined by parameters such as solvent, spin speed or subsequent treatment. The relationship between these observations, polymer–template interactions and the mechanism of film formation in spin coating is discussed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In the present study, films based on linter cellulose and chitosan were prepared using an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH)/thiourea as the solvent system. The dissolution process of cellulose and chitosan in NaOH/thiourea aqueous solution was followed by the partial chain depolymerization of both biopolymers, which facilitates their solubilization. Biobased films with different chitosan/cellulose ratios were then elaborated by a casting method and subsequent solvent evaporation. They were characterized by X-ray analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermal analysis, and tests related to tensile strength and biodegradation properties. The SEM images of the biofilms with 50/50 and 60/40 ratio of chitosan/cellulose showed surfaces more wrinkled than the others. The AFM images indicated that higher the content of chitosan in the biobased composite film, higher is the average roughness value. It was inferred through thermal analysis that the thermal stability was affected by the presence of chitosan in the films; the initial temperature of decomposition was shifted to lower levels in the presence of chitosan. Results from the tests for tensile strength indicated that the blending of cellulose and chitosan improved the mechanical properties of the films and that an increase in chitosan content led to production of films with higher tensile strength and percentage of elongation. The degradation study in a simulated soil showed that the higher the crystallinity, the lower is the biodegradation rate.  相似文献

An original method based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) in contact mode was developed to abrade progressively the surface of tablets made of starch or gluten polymers isolated from wheat. The volume of the material removed by the tip was estimated from the analysis of successive topographic images of the surface, and the shear force was measured by keeping a constant normal force. Our data together with a simple tribological model provide clear evidence for a higher hardness and shear strength of starch compared to gluten. Gluten appears to have mechanical properties close to soft materials, such as talc, whereas starch displays higher hardness close to calcite. Our results are in a better agreement with structural properties of gluten (complex protein network) and starch (granular and semi-cristalline structure) than earlier studies by micro-indentation. This work shows that the AFM scratching method is relevant for the characterization of any polymer surface, in particular in application to materials made of different polymers at the nano-scale.  相似文献

An atomic force microscope was used so as to structure by nanofriction films of polynitrophenylene electrografted on substrates of n-type silicon (100) with the native oxide on the top of the surface. AFM measurements of thin films thickness have been carried out in the electrolytic solution for different applied potentials during the electrografting. This investigation allows (i) to determine the relationship between the applied potential and the final thickness of electrografted polyphenylene films and (ii) to specify how the thin layers grow. XPS analysis confirmed the AFM observations on (i) the effective shaving of the grafted polymer chains under mechanical stress and (ii) the existence of a potential threshold for electrografting a polyphenylene film on silicon oxide surfaces. The presence of a residual film in the rubbed zone was attributed to stronger interactions between the first electrografted layer and the native oxide of silicon (through Si-C or/and Si-O-C bonds) than those insuring the cohesion of the multilayer (C-C and C-N bonds).  相似文献

The morphologies of films spin coated from dilute block copolymer solution onto a mica substrate were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Variables of interest were the polymer concentration, solvent, heating temperature, aging, and ultrasonic effect. It is shown that the solution concentration is the predominant factor in determining the shape of the aggregates displayed from spheres and rods to irregular patches with increasing concentration. The solubility parameter of the solvent plays an important role in modifying the distribution and the size of clusters at the surface. The structures of the aggregates at the surface are metastable, which could evolve with temperature from rodlike aggregates into regular stripes when annealed at a temperature higher than the order-disorder transition temperature of SEBS, whereas those in solution could evolve with aging and ultrasonic treatment into a more stable network structure.  相似文献

Films of pure ethylcellulose (EC) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) polymers and EC/HPMC blends were prepared from solutions by spin coating where isopropyl alcohol (IPA), water, and IPA/water cosolvent were used as solvents. Surface structures of the films were investigated using optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Raman mapping and spectroscopy. For the films prepared from EC/HPMC blend solutions using the IPA/water cosolvent, different domain structures such as islands or pits and phase separation between EC and HPMC were observed by optical microscopy and AFM. The nature of the polymer components on the surface of the films was identified by Raman mapping and spectroscopy. Experimental results also indicated that polymer composition, solvent, and temperature during spin coating had significant impacts on surface structures of the films.  相似文献

Using an atomic force microscope (AFM), we have investigated the interaction forces exerted by latex particles bearing densely grafted polymer brushes consisting of poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA), poly(methoxyethylacrylamide) (PMEA), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), and PMEA-b-PNIPAM in aqueous media (good solvent). The brushes were prepared by controlled surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization, and the hydrodynamic thicknesses were measured by dynamic light scattering. The molecular weight (Mn), grafting density (sigma), and polydispersity (PDI) of the brushes were determined by gel permeation chromatography and multiangle laser light scattering after cleaving the polymer from the latex surface by hydrolysis. Force profiles of PDMA (0.017 nm(-2) < or = sigma < or = 0.17 nm-2) and PMEA (sigma = 0.054 nm-2) brushes were purely repulsive upon compression, with forces increasing with Mn and a, as expected, due to excluded volume interactions. At a sufficiently low grafting density (sigma = 0.012 nm-2), PDMA exhibited a long-range exponentially increasing attractive force followed by repulsion upon further compression. The long-range attractive force is believed to be due to bridging between the free chain ends and the AFM tip. The PNIPAM brush exhibited a bridging force at a grafting density of 0.037 nm(-2), a value lower than the sigma needed to induce bridging in the PDMA brush. Bridging was therefore found to depend on grafting density as well as on the nature of the monomer. The grafting densities of these polymers were larger than those typically associated with bridging. Bridging interactions were used to confirm the presence of PNIPAM in a block copolymer PMEA-b-PNIPAMA brush given that the original PMEA homopolymer brush produced a purely repulsive force. The attractive force was first detected in the block copolymer brush at a separation that increased with the length of the PNIPAM block.  相似文献

There is a need to know the nanostructure of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) films obtained from waterborne polymer colloids so that it can be correlated with properties. Intermittent-contact atomic force microscopy (AFM) of an acrylic waterborne PSA film identifies two components, which can be attributed to the polymer and the solids in the serum (mainly surfactant). It is found that when the average AFM tapping force, F(av), is relatively low, the polymer particles appear to be concave. But when F(av) is higher, the particles appear to have a convex shape. This observation is explained by a height artefact caused by differences in the indentation depths into the two components that vary with the tapping amplitude and F(av). To achieve the maximum contrast between the polymer and serum components, F(av) should be set such that the indentation depths are as different as possible. Unlike what is found for the height images, the phase contrast images of the PSA do not show a reversal in contrast over the range of tapping conditions applied. The phase images are thus reliable in distinguishing the two components of the PSA according to their viscoelastic properties. At the surface of films dried at room temperature, the serum component is found in localized regions within permanent depression into the film.  相似文献

As many properties of polymer thin films critically depend on their thickness, a convenient and cost‐effective method for precise measurement of film thickness in a wide range is highly desirable. Here, we present a method which enables polymer film thickness, ranging from nanometer to micrometer scale, to be facilely determined by measuring the height of an artificially created film step on smooth substrates with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Three polymeric films (polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(styrene–ethylene/butylene–styrene) films), spin‐coated on either mica or quartz substrate with thickness ranging from 5.7 nm to 4.4 µm, were employed to demonstrate the procedure and feasibility of our method. The proposed method is particularly suitable for thicker polymer films, thus complementing the traditional AFM ‘tip‐scratch’ method which is generally limited to polymer films of no more than 100 nm thickness. Surface topography has vital roles in cellular response. Here, to investigate the mechanism behind cellular response to surface topography, we prepared honeycomb (HC)-patterned films from poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) with micropatterned surface topography by casting a polymer solution of water-immiscible solvent under high humidity. We characterized the adsorption of fibronectin (Fn) on the film using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The response of porcine aortic endothelial cells (PAECs) to adsorbed Fn molecules onto HC-patterned films was observed by immunofluorescence labeling of vinculin and the actin fiber of PAECs cultured for 1 and 72 h in serum-free medium. The expression of focal adhesion kinase autophosphorylated at the tyrosine residue (pFAK) at 1 h culture was determined using an immunoprecipitation method. Fn adsorbed selectively around the pore edges to form ring-shaped aggregates. The immunostaining results revealed that PAECs adhered to the HC-patterned films at focal contact points localized around pore peripheries. These points correspond to adsorption sites of Fn. The expression of pFAK after 1 h on the HC-patterned film was 3 times higher than that on a corresponding flat film, indicating that the signaling mediated by the binding between Fn and the integrin receptor was more highly activated on the HC-patterned film. These results suggest that the cellular response to HC-patterned films (e.g., adhesion pattern and phosphorylation of FAK) originates from the regularly aligned adsorption pattern of Fn determined by the pore structure of the film.  相似文献
