The thermal properties, crystallization, and morphology of amphiphilic poly(D ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethyl methacrylate) (PDLA‐b‐PDMAEMA) and poly (L ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethyl methacrylate) (PLLA‐b‐PDMAEMA) copolymers were studied and compared to those of the corresponding poly(lactide) homopolymers. Additionally, stereocomplexation of these copolymers was studied. The crystallization kinetics of the PLA blocks was retarded by the presence of the PDMAEMA block. The studied copolymers were found to be miscible in the melt and the glassy state. The Avrami theory was able to predict the entire crystallization range of the PLA isothermal overall crystallization. The melting points of PLDA/PLLA and PLA/PLA‐b‐PDMAEMA stereocomplexes were higher than those formed by copolymer mixtures. This indicates that the PDMAEMA block is influencing the stability of the stereocomplex structures. For the low molecular weight samples, the stereocomplexes particles exhibited a conventional disk‐shape structure and, for high molecular weight samples, the particles displayed unusual star‐like shape morphology. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random and block copolymerizations of L ‐ or D ‐lactide with ε‐caprolactone (CL) were performed with a novel anionic initiator, (C5Me5)2SmMe(THF), and they resulted in partial epimerization, generating D ,L ‐ or meso‐lactide polymers with enhanced biodegradability. A blend of PLLA‐r‐PCL [82/18; PLLA = poly(L ‐LA) and PCL = poly(ε‐caprolactone)] and PDLA‐r‐PCL [79/21; PDLA = poly(D ‐LA)] prepared by the solution‐casting method generated a stereocomplex, the melting temperature of which was about 40 °C higher than that of the nonblended copolymers. A blend of PLLA‐b‐PCL (85/15) and PDLA‐b‐PCL (82/18) showed a lower elongation at break and a remarkably higher tensile modulus than stereocomplexes of PLLA‐r‐PCL/PDLA‐r‐PCL and PLLA/PDLA. The biodegradability of a blend of PLLA‐r‐PCL (65/35) and PDLA‐r‐PCL (66/34) with proteinase K was higher than that of PLLA‐b‐PCL (47/53) and PDLA‐b‐PCL (45/55), the degradability of which was higher than that of a PLLA/PDLA blend. A blend film of PLLA‐r‐PDLLA (69/31)/PDLA‐r‐PDLLA (68/32) exhibited higher degradability than a film of PLLA/PDLLA [PDLLA = poly(D ,L ‐LA)]. A stereocomplex of PLLA‐r‐PCL‐r‐PDMO [80/18/2; PDMO = poly(L ‐3,D ,L ‐6‐dimethyl‐2,5‐morpholinedion)] with PDLA‐r‐PCL‐r‐PDMO (81/17/2) showed higher degradability than PLLA‐r‐PDMO (98/2)/PDLA‐r‐PDMO (98/2) and PLLA‐r‐PCL (82/18)/PDLA‐r‐PCL (79/21) blends. The tensile modulus of a blend of PLLA‐r‐PCL‐r‐PDMO and PDLA‐r‐PCL‐r‐PDMO was much higher than that of a blend of PLLA‐r‐PDMO and PDLA‐r‐PDMO. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Block copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide or D ‐lactide in the presence of mono‐ or dihydroxyl poly(ethylene glycol), using zinc metal as catalyst. The resulting copolymers were characterized by various techniques, namely 1H NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X‐ray diffractometry, and Raman spectrometry. The composition of the copolymers was designed such that they were water soluble. Bioresorbable hydrogels were prepared from aqueous solutions containing both poly(L ‐lactide)/poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(D ‐lactide)/poly(ethylene glycol) block copolymers. Rheological studies confirmed the formation of hydrogels resulting from stereocomplexation between poly(L ‐lactide) and poly(D ‐lactide) blocks.

Well‐defined telechelic‐type aromatic polyamides having a secondary amino group and a phenyl ester moiety at each chain end were prepared by the chain‐growth polycondensation of phenyl 4‐(octylamino)benzoate ( 1 ) with initiator 2 (N‐tert‐butoxycarbonylated 1 ), followed by deprotection of the N‐protecting group of the initiator unit. This polycondensation was applied to the synthesis of well‐defined di‐ and triblock copolymers of aromatic polyamides and poly(tetrahydrofuran) (poly(THF)) by the reaction of the terminal secondary amino group of the polyamide with the living cationic propagating group of poly(THF).

A model polyethylene‐poly(L ‐lactide) diblock copolymer (PE‐b‐PLLA) was synthesized using hydroxyl‐terminated PE (PE‐OH) as a macroinitiator for the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide. Binary blends, which contained poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and very low‐density polyethylene (LDPE), and ternary blends, which contained PLLA, LDPE, and PE‐b‐PLLA, were prepared by solution blending followed by precipitation and compression molding. Particle size analysis and scanning electron microscopy results showed that the particle size and distribution of the LDPE dispersed in the PLLA matrix was sharply decreased upon the addition of PE‐b‐PLLA. The tensile and Izod impact testing results on the ternary blends showed significantly improved toughness as compared to the PLLA homopolymer or the corresponding PLLA/LDPE binary blends. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Chitosan grafted oligo(L ‐lactic acid) copolymers with different length of side chain were prepared through the reaction of terminal aldehyde group of oligo(L ‐lactic acid) (OLLA) and amino groups of chitosan. The mean molecular mass of the grafting OLLA chain was ca. 600 ~ 5 000. The graft copolymers are soluble in DMSO, DMF and acetic acid. The synthesis method and structure described here provide chitosan‐g‐OLLA copolymers with broad applicability.

Poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) was produced by the melt polycondensation of L ‐lactic acid. For the optimization of the reaction conditions, various catalyst systems were examined at different temperature and reaction times. It was discovered that Sn(II) catalysts activated by various proton acids can produce high molecular weight PLLA [weight‐average molecular weight (Mw ) ≥ 100,000] in a relatively short reaction time (≤15 h) compared with simple Sn(II)‐based catalysts (SnO, SnCl2 · 2H2O), which produce PLLA with an Mw of less than 30,000 after 20 h. The new catalyst system is also superior to the conventional systems in regard to racemization and discoloration of the resultant polymer. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Block copolymers create various types of nano‐structures, e. g., spheres, rods, cubes, and lamellae. This review discloses the dynamic macromolecular organization of block copolymers comprising poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and poly(oxyethylene) (PEG) that allows to simulate elaborate biological systems. The block copolymers, AB‐ (PLLA‐PEG) and ABA‐type (PLLA‐PEG‐PLLA), are synthesized by ordinary lactide polymerization to have a controlled block length. They are dispersed into an aqueous medium to prepare nano‐scale particles, consisting of hydrophobic PLLA and hydrophilic PEG in the core and shell, respectively. Then, the particles are placed on a flat substrate by the casting method. The particles are detected as discoids by AFM, having shrunk with loss of water. Heat‐treatment of these particles at 60°C (above Tg of PLLA) gives rise to a collapse into small fragments, which then aggregate into bands with nano‐size width and thickness. The PLLA‐PEG bands align parallel to each other, while the PLLA‐PEG‐PLLA bands form a characteristic network resembling the neuron system created in animal tissue. As analyzed by TEM diffraction, each is composed of α‐crystal of PLLA whose c‐axis (molecular axis) is perpendicular to the substrate surface. Based on this fact, a doubly twisted chain structure of PLLA is proposed in addition to a plausible mechanism for the self‐organization of the block copolymers. Derivatives of the PLLA‐PEG block copolymers can form far more interesting nano‐architectures. An equimolar mixture of enantiomeric copolymers, PLLA‐PEG‐PLLA and PDLA‐PEG‐PDLA, forms a hydrogel that is thermo‐responsive. The terminal‐modified poly(L ‐lactide)‐block‐polyoxyethylene monocinnamate (PLLA‐PEG‐C) forms a highly stabilized nanofiber by the photo‐reaction of the cinnamates placed in the outer layer of the nanobands. 相似文献

We report the synthesis of a series of block copolymers consisting of a rod‐like semiconducting poly(2,5‐di(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene) (DEH‐PPV) block and a flexible poly(lactic acid) (PLA) block that can be selectively degraded under mild conditions. Such selectively degradable block copolymers are designed as self‐assembling templates for bulk heterojunction donor–acceptor layers in organic solar cells. A lamellar microphase‐separated domain structure was identified for block copolymers with PLA volume fractions between 29 and 79% in bulk and thin films using SAXS, TEM, and AFM. Depending on the ratio of the two blocks we find either lamellae oriented parallel or perpendicular to the substrate in thin films.

Summary: Star‐shaped hydroxy‐terminated poly(ε‐caprolactone)s (ssPCL), with arms of different lengths, were obtained by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone initiated by pentaerythritol, and were condensed with α‐methyl‐ω‐(3‐carboxypropionyloxy)‐poly(ethylene oxide)s ( = 550–5 000) to afford four‐armed PCL‐PEO star diblock copolymers (ssPCL‐PEO). The polymers were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC). The melting behavior of ssPCLs was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). X‐ray diffraction and DSC techniques were used to investigate the crystalline phases of ssPCL‐PEOs.

The use of poly(lactide)‐based materials is, in part, limited by their physical and mechanical properties. This article reviews the methods that have been employed to enable enhancement of the materials properties through synthetic manipulation of the polymer structure including block copolymer synthesis and modification of the lactide monomer structure, focusing on the application of ring‐opening polymerization. In turn the effect of these structural modifications on the properties of the resultant materials are reported.

Simultaneous solid‐state polycondensation (SSP) of the powdery prepolymers of poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(D ‐lactic acid) (PDLA) can produce entire stereocomplexed poly(lactic acid)s (sc‐PLA) with high molecular weight and can be an alternative synthetic route to sc‐PLA. Ordinary melt polycondensations of L ‐ and D ‐lactic acids gave the PLLA and PDLA prepolymers having medium molecular weight which were pulverized for blending in 1:1 ratio. The resultant powder blends were then subjected to SSP at 130–160 °C for 30 h under a reduced pressure of 0.5 Torr. Some of the products thus obtained attained a molecular weight (Mw) as high as 200 kDa, consisting of stereoblock copolymer of PLLA and PDLA. A small amount of the stereocomplex should be formed in the boundaries of the partially melted PLLA and PDLA where the hetero‐chain connection is induced to generate the blocky components. The resultant SSP products showed predominant stereocomplexation after their melt‐processing in the presence of the stereoblock components in spite of containing a small amount of racemic sequences in the homo‐chiral PLLA and PDLA chains. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An Erratum has been published for this article in J. Polym. Sci. Part A: Polym. Chem. (2004) 42(22) 5845 New multiblock copolymers derived from poly(L‐lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared with the coupling reaction between PLLA and PCL oligomers with ? NCO terminals. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 13C NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize the copolymers and the results showed that PLLA and PCL were coupled by the reaction between ? NCO groups at the end of the PCL and ? OH (or ? COOH) groups at the end of the PLLA. DSC data indicated that the different compositions of PLLA and PCL had an influence on the thermal and crystallization properties including the glass‐transition temperature (Tg), melting temperature (TM), crystallizing temperature (Tc), melting enthalpy (ΔHm), crystallizing enthalpy (ΔHc), and crystallinity. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was employed to study the effect of the composition of PLLA and PCL and reaction time on the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the copolymers. The weight‐average molecular weight of PLLA–PCL multiblock copolymers was up to 180,000 at a composition of 60% PLLA and 40% PCL, whereas that of the homopolymer of PLLA was only 14,000. A polarized optical microscope was used to observe the crystalline morphology of copolymers; the results showed that all polymers exhibited a spherulitic morphology. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stereoblock poly(lactic acid) (sb-PLA), consisting of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) in a blocky sequence, can successfully be synthesized by solid-state polycondensation of a stereocomplexed mixture of PLLA and PDLA. First, the melt polyconden-sation of L- and D-lactic acids is conducted to obtain PLLA and PDLA with medium molecular weights. Then, both polymers are melt-blended to easily form the stereocomplex. The resulting stereocomplexed mixture (melt-blend) is subjected to solid-state polycondensation for chain extension. The molecular weight (Mw) of the resultant sb-PLA is strongly affected by the lactide/oligomer content in the melt-blend, which is determined by the melt-blending conditions, because it is directly correlated with the polymer crystallinity of the polycondensation products. 相似文献

We report the design and synthesis of new fully biodegradable thermoresponsive amphiphilic poly(γ‐benzyl L ‐glutamate)/poly(ethyl ethylene phosphate) (PBLG‐b‐PEEP) block copolymers by ring‐opening polymerization of N‐carboxy‐γ‐benzyl L ‐glutamate anhydride (BLG? NCA) with amine‐terminated poly(ethyl ethylene phosphate) (H2N? PEEP) as a macroinitiator. The fluorescence technique demonstrated that the block copolymers could form micelles composed of a hydrophobic core and a hydrophilic shell in aqueous solution. The morphology of the micelles as determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was spherical. The size and critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of the micelles showed a decreasing trend as the PBLG segment increased. However, UV/Vis measurements showed that these block copolymers exhibited a reproducible temperature‐responsive behavior with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) that could be tuned by the block composition and the concentration. 相似文献

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) stereocomplexes have high potential as renewable materials for advanced polymer applications, mainly due to their high melting temperature (Tm, typically 230–240°C). The properties of PLA stereocomplexes consisting of linear high molar mass homopolymers have been studied extensively in the past, but the available information about the possibilities to affect the thermal properties of the stereocomplex by varying the structure of the blend components has not been sufficient. Novel stereocomplexes containing linear or star‐shaped D ‐lactic acid (D ‐LA) oligomers and high molar mass poly(L ‐lactide) (L‐ PLA) were thus prepared. The Tm and melting enthalpy (ΔHm) of the racemic crystallites were found to depend strongly on both the blending ratio and the arm‐length of the D ‐lactic acid oligomer. The preparation method of the oligomers, i.e. step‐growth polymerization or ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), did not affect the Tm or ΔHm of the blends significantly. Slightly higher ΔHm values were, however, obtained, when linear oligomers were used. The results thus indicated that the Tm and ΔHm of PLA stereocomplexes could be optimized, simply by selecting a D ‐LA oligomer having a suitable arm‐length and structure as the other blend component. The possibility to adjust the melting behavior of the stereocomplex blend is a significant advantage and could make PLA suitable for a wider range of products used at elevated temperatures. Aliphatic polyesters and polyphosphoesters (PPEs) have received much interest in medical applications due to their favorable biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this work, novel amphiphilic triblock copolymers of PPE and poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) with various compositions were synthesized and characterized. The blocky structure was confirmed by GPC analyses. These triblock copolymers formed micelles composed of hydrophobic PLLA core and hydrophilic PPE shell in aqueous solution. Critical micellization concentrations of these triblock copolymers were related to the polymer compositions. Incubation of micelles at neutral pH followed by GPC analyses revealed that these polymer micelles were hydrolysized and resulted in decreased molecular weights and small oligomers, whereas its degradation in basic and acid mediums was accelerated. MTT assay also demonstrated the biocompatibility against HEK293 cells. These biodegradable polymers are potential as drug carriers for biomedical application. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the synthesis of a novel pH‐responsive amphiphilic block copolymer poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(pentafluorostyrene) (PDMAEMA‐b‐PPFS) using RAFT‐mediated living radical polymerization. Copolymer micelle formation, in aqueous solution, was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy, static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). DLS and SLS measurements revealed that the diblock copolymers form spherical micelles with large aggregation numbers, Nagg ≈ 30 where the dense PPFS core is surrounded by dangling PDMAEMA chains as the micelle corona. The hydrodynamic radii, Rh of these micelles is large, at pH 2–5 as the protonated PDMAEMA segments swell the micelle corona. Above pH 5, the PDMAEMA segments are gradually deprotonated, resulting in a lower osmotic pressure and enhanced hydrophobicity within the micelle, thus decreasing the Rh. However, the radius of gyration, Rg remains independent of pH as the dense PPFS cores predominate.
