Electric field experiments on the 2H N.M.R. spectrum of perdeuterobenzene, dissolved in nitrobenzene, are reported. The alignment of the polar molecules, induced by a strong electric field, is transferred to the non-polar ones and as a result their N.M.R. spectrum is modified.

Local field models, e.g. those of Lorentz and Onsager, treat the environment of a molecule as a continuum and are unable to explain the alignment of the non-polar molecules. Intermolecular interactions are essential. In an expression for the alignment these interactions are described in terms of correlation functions for the mixture.

N.M.R. and Kerr data of nitrobenzene-benzene solutions have been compared. The Kerr constant of a binary mixture is shown to depend on the alignments of both the polar and non-polar component. N.M.R. electric field experiments may be useful to separate these two contributions.  相似文献

The alignment average of polar molecules may be derived from their NMR spectrum, when a strong electric field is applied to the liquid. The Kerr effect can likewise be related to the alignment.In this paper the alignment has been calculated for a rigid-lattice model, previously developed by Van Vleck in the theory of dielectric polarization and extended by others. A series expansion of the alignment for a system of isotropically polarizable dipoles is presented up to second-order terms in the dipolar interaction. The result for a continuum has been compared with those calculated on the basis of the Lorentz and Onsager model of the liquid.An explicit expression for the total electrostatic energy of a binary mixture of polar and non- polar molecules with a symmetric polarizability tensor has also been calculated; it has been obtained from a generalization of a formalism, developed by Mandel and Mazur for the pure polar liquid.  相似文献

The contour integration technique applied to calculate the optical conductivity tensor at finite temperatures in the case of inhomogeneous surface layered systems within the framework of the spin-polarized relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker band structure method is extended to arbitrary polarizations of the electric field. It is shown that besides the inter-band contribution, the contour integration technique also accounts for the intra-band contribution. Introducing a layer-resolved complex Kerr angle, the importance of the first, non-magnetic buffer layer below the ferromagnetic surface on the magneto-optical Kerr effect in the Co | Pt m multilayer system is shown. Increasing the thickness of the buffer Pt, the layer-resolved complex Kerr angles follow a linear dependence with respect to m only after nine Pt mono-layers.  相似文献

克尔效应(Kerr Effect)作为一种电光效应,主要表现为:克尔介质在外加电场作用下,会使得入射到其中的探测光带有外加电场的信息.基于上述原理,设计并搭建了由快脉冲高电压源、YAG激光器、同步控制子系统、被测绝缘子及克尔效应单元、相位差检测子系统构成的真空绝缘子表面电场在线测量实验平台.通过对比性测量,观察到了真空绝缘子沿面带电导致的表面电场畸变现象.并进一步对绝缘子表面电场的畸变进行了时间分辨测量.  相似文献

The dielectric alignment of a dilute non-polar component in a polar solvent may be determined by NMR spectroscopy. In this paper a series expansion of the alignment up to second order terms in the dipolar interaction is presented for a non-polar molecule replacing a single polar molecule in a rigid lattice of molecular dipoles. Assuming isotropic polarizabilities for all molecules Van Vleck earlier applied the lattice model in a theory of the dielectric constant of a dilute solution.In the present calculation the polarizabilities of the non-polar molecule and the dipoles are assumed to be anisotropic and isotropic, respectively. The anisotropy of the non-polar molecule is relevant, since the value of the alignment is zero for the isotropic case. Different results are obtained for cubic lattices and for a lattice points are uniformly distributed.In absence of a rigid dipole moment of the solvent molecules the latter formula may be compared with that implicity deduced by Buckingham for the Kerr effect. In the limit of strong dipoles the orientation imposed by the rigid dipole moments appears to be the major contribution to the alignment of the non-polar molecule.  相似文献

The current induced Kerr effect in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field is treated for binary mixtures of neutral molecules and ions. The starting point is a system of moment equations derived from the linearized Waldmann-Snider equation. The dialectric tensor is calculated and studied in particular for a lorentzian mixture in perpendicular electric and magnetic fields. It is shown that the magnetic field causes a decrease of briefringence as well as a rotation of the principal axes of the dielectric tensor.  相似文献

基于Kerr电光效应,建立了用以对纳秒脉冲高电压作用下的真空绝缘子表面电场进行在线测量的实验系统。该测量系统由快脉冲高电压源、YAG激光器、同步控制系统、被测中空薄壁绝缘子及Kerr效应单元、光学相位差检测系统等部分构成。利用YAG激光器输出的激光脉冲,触发导通快脉冲高压源中的高压气体开关,使其给被测绝缘子试品上施加一个脉宽100ns的高压脉冲方波。利用同步控制,使得探测激光在试品上的脉冲方波达到幅值后,入射到Kerr腔体中对Kerr效应进行探测。从而实现了对绝缘子表面电场的在线测量,并给出了初步的测量结果。  相似文献

The electro-optical Kerr effect induced by a slowly varying electric field in liquid helium at temperatures below the lambda point is investigated. The Kerr constant of liquid helium is measured to be (1.43+/-0.02(stat)+/-0.04(sys)) x 10(-20) (cm/V)(2) at T=1.5 K. Within experimental uncertainty, the Kerr constant is independent of temperature in the range T=1.5 K to 2.17 K, which implies that the Kerr constant of the superfluid component of liquid helium is the same as that of normal liquid helium. Pair and higher correlations of He atoms in the liquid phase account for about 23% of the measured Kerr constant. Liquid nitrogen was used to test the experimental setup; the result for the liquid nitrogen Kerr constant is (4.38+/-0.15) x 10(-18) (cm/V)(2). Kerr effect can be used as a noncontact technique for measuring the magnitude and mapping out the distribution of electric fields inside these cryogenic insulants.  相似文献

In this article,we review recently achieved Kerr effect progress in novel liquid crystal(LC) material:vertically aligned deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal(VADHFLC).With an increasing applied electric field,the induced inplane birefringence of LCs shows quadratic nonlinearity.The theoretical calculations and experimental details are illustrated.With an enhanced Kerr constant to 130 nm/V2,this VADHFLC cell can achieve a 2π modulation by a small efficient electric field with a fast response around 100 μs and thus can be employed in both display and photonics devices.  相似文献

We show that a linear molecule subjected to a short specific elliptically polarized laser field yields post-pulse revivals exhibiting alignment alternatively located along the orthogonal axis and the major axis of the ellipse. The effect is experimentally demonstrated by measuring the optical Kerr effect along two different axes. The conditions ensuring an optimal field-free alternation of high alignments along both directions are derived.  相似文献

A technique was provided to nonintrusively quantify the field-free alignment of molecules by measuring the transient birefringence caused by the aligned molecules. Pure heterodyne alignment signals were obtained from the difference of the signals under an external electric field with opposite polarity and equal magnitude. The results demonstrated that the pure heterodyne alignment signal directly reproduced the revival structure of molecular alignment and its Fourier transform spectroscopy represented the actual populations of the different J states in the rotational wave packet.  相似文献

Different electro-optic effects, such as Kerr effect, Pockels effect induced by the electric field or strain, and plasma dispersion effect exist in silicon. Experimentally distinguishing these effects is necessary for designing silicon-based electro-optic devices. According to their different polarization dependencies and frequency responses, these effects are measured and distinguished successfully via a transverse electro-optic modulation experiment based on the near-intrinsic silicon sample. The results indicate that Pockels effect induced by the electric field or strain is primary among these effects in the near-intrinsic silicon sample.  相似文献

In this paper we study the trajectories of charged particles in an electromagnetic field superimposed on the Kerr background. The electromagnetic fields considered are of two types: (i) a dipole magnetic field with an associated quadrupole electric field, (ii) a uniform magnetic field. The contribution of the background geometry to the electromagnetic field is taken through the solutions of Petterson and Wald respectively. The effective potential is studied in detail for ther-motion of the particles in the equatorial plane and the orbits are obtained. The most interesting aspect of the study is the illustration of the effect of inertial frame dragging due to the rotation of the central star. This appears through the existence of nongyrating bound orbits at and inside the ergo surface. The presence of the magnetic field seems to increase the range of stable orbits, as was found in a previous study involving the Schwarzschild background.  相似文献

The electrostriction contribution to the nonlinear refractive index in optical fiber was theoretically calculated and measured. Nonlinearity was induced directly by insertion of the optical fiber into an intense external electric field. With this technique both the Kerr and the electrostrictive contributions to the intensity dependence of the nonlinear refractive index in a step-index fiber were measured. Good agreement between calculated and measured values was observed. These results should confirm and explain the differences observed in measurement of n(2) at different bit rates.  相似文献

A theory of the polar magneto-optical Kerr effect in a layer of small ferromagnetic particles has been developed in the framework of the Green’s function method of electrodynamics. The manifestation in magneto-optics of the local field effect, which is initiated by the contribution to the effective field of dipole moments induced in particles, has been studied in terms of the model of a square lattice of ferromagnetic ellipsoids. The magneto-optical Kerr effect stimulated under normal incidence of a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave on a layer of particles magnetized perpendicular to the layer plane has been analyzed. The dependence of the Kerr rotation angle in an array of ellipsoidal Co particles embedded in the transparent dielectric CaF2 on the light frequency, the parameters of the ellipsoidal particles, and the lattice period (concentration of the magnet in the layer) has been studied numerically. It has been shown that, within a broad (2.0–4.5 eV) spectral range, the local field effect studied as a function of increasing concentration of Co particles in the layer manifests itself in the reversal of the sign of the Kerr rotation compared to that observed in a single ellipsoid or a solid Co film.  相似文献

The interaction between a two-level atom and a single-mode field in the k-photon Jaynes–Cummings model(JCM) in the presence of the Stark shift and a Kerr medium is studied. All terms in the Hamiltonian, such as the single-mode field, its interaction with the atom, the contribution of the Stark shift and the Kerr medium effects are considered to be f-deformed.In particular, the effect of the initial state of the radiation field on the dynamical evolution of some physical properties such as atomic inversion and entropy squeezing are investigated by considering different initial field states(coherent, squeezed and thermal states).  相似文献

We experimentally demonstrated that both the electronic Kerr effect and the molecular alignment in gaseous molecules could be applied as transient gates to diagnose 400 nm target pulses. Their birefringence dissimilarity was clearly visualized by the measured spectrogram and retrieved gate function. In the atomic gas argon, a relatively weak and instantaneous cross phase modulation within the pulse duration was observed, while in the molecular gas N(2), the delayed rotational Raman excitation played a dominative role.  相似文献

In a Kerr-Newman-Kasuya field we have obtained expressions of the acceleration effect and also studied the special case (v^i=0). We find that in this field, the acceleration of a falling particle has both radial and transverse components.
