Spirastrellolide B: the synthesis of southern (C9-C25) region

A combination of "chiron" and "asymmetric" approaches is utilized to construct the southern (C 9-C 25) region of marine natural product spirastrellolide B. The key functionalities are derived from d-glucose and Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation and dihydroxylation.     

Tetrafibricin: synthesis of the C1-C13, C15-C25, and C27-C40 fragments

[structure: see text] A sequence of chemoselective cross-metathesis reactions and enantioselective allyltitanations of aldehydes has been used to prepare the C1-C13, C15-C26, and C27-C40 fragments of tetrafibricin.     

Kinetics of the reactions of tert-butanol with C2-C5 alcohols on sulfo cation exchangers

The kinetics of etherification of tert-butanol with aliphatic alcohols on gel KU-2×8 and macroporous KU-23 sulfo cation exchangers was studied. The first order of reaction with respect to tert-butanol and the -CSO₃H groups of a catalyst was established. The activation energy of the process observed on KU-2×8 was 60–95 kJ/mol. It was shown that the etherification of tert-butanol on KU-2×8 occurred in a surface layer. The reactivity of primary alcohols introduced into the reaction with tert-butanol increased with their molecular weights (C₂–C₅). The rate of reaction with secondary alcohols was lower than that with primary alcohols.     

Stereoselective synthesis of C1-C9 and C9-C17 fragments of (+)-13-deoxytedanolide

An efficient and highly stereoselective asymmetric synthesis of C1-C9 and C9-C17 fragments of (+)-13-deoxytedanolide have been achieved. Utilization of desymmetrization technique to prepare the triol with five stereogenic centers, regioselective Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation, Evans' aldol reaction, chiral methylation, and Wittig olefination are highlights of the synthesis.     

Effect of the catalyst structure on the catalytic activity in dehydrogenation of 2-methyl butane

Calorimetry, thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction analysis, and low-temperature adsorption of nitrogen were used to study the structure of bimetallic Pt—Sn catalysts on zinc–alumina spinel supports. The effect of the porous structure of the catalyst samples synthesized on their catalytic activity in dehydrogenation of 2–methyl butane was analyzed.     

The biosynthesis of C5-C25 terpenoid compounds

This review covers recently-published experimental information on the biosynthesis of terpenoids in the range C5-C25. In addition to sections on the mevalonate and mevalonate-independent (deoxyxylulose phosphate) pathways, the review considers in turn hemiterpenoids, polyprenyl diphosphate synthases, monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, diterpenoids, and sesterterpenoids. The literature from January 1998 to December 2000 is reviewed, with 248 references cited.     

Synthesis of the C1-C9 fragment of callipeltoside-A

[reaction: see text] The C1-C9 fragment of callipeltoside (17) was prepared in 12 steps and 7.2% overall yield from bicyclic lactone (+)-4. Key steps include a stereoselective epoxidation and further regiocontrolled nucleophilic opening of the oxirane ring to install two vicinal stereocenters (C5 and C6), and the use of bis(trimethylsilyl) peroxide and a catalytic amount of Sn(IV) chloride for the chemoselective Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of unsaturated cyclopentanone 15.     

Synthesis of the C8-C20 and C21-C30 segments of pectenotoxin 2

In this study, we synthesized the C8-C20 and C21-C30 segments of the diarrhetic shellfish toxin pectenotoxin 2. The C8-C20 segment was assembled from a phosphonate corresponding to the C8-C15 segment (prepared from l-malic acid in 19 steps) and an aldehyde corresponding to the C16-C20 segment (synthesized from 3-methyl-3-butenol in nine steps) by a twelve-step process including the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction, regio- and stereoselective reduction of the resulting enone, diastereoselective epoxidation, and 5-exo epoxide cleavage forming the C-ring. The C21-C30 segment was constructed in 13 steps from (S)-glycidol via a route involving E-ring formation by 5-exo epoxide cleavage and stereoselective methylation at C27 by the Evans method.     

Interactions between aminoacids and alcohols in water at 25 °C

The enthalpies of dilution of ternary aqueous solutions containing an alcohol (ethanol,n-propanol,n-butanol or tert-butanol) and an aminoacid or a peptide (glycine, glycyl-glycine or glycyl-glycyl-glycine), were measured at 25 °C. The results were used to calculate pair cross interaction parameters between solutes. The coefficients of virial expansion of the excess enthalpies are compared with those referring to solutions containing the same alcohols and other structure-breaking solutes (urea, thiourea and biuret). The enthalpic pair parameter for the systems glycine-alcohols shows the same trend, as reported in the literature, for similar structure-breaking solutes, with a maximum in the cross coefficients when reported versus the self pair interaction coefficients of alcohols. The results are interpreted in terms of a prevailing release of water from the cospheres of alcohols.

Zusammenfassung Die Verdünnungsenthalpien ternärer wässeriger Lösungen, die einen Alkohol (Ethanol,n-Propanol,n-Butanol odertert-Bulanol) und eine Aminosäure oder ein Peptid (Glycin, Glycil-glycin oder Glycyl-glycyl-glycin) enthalten, wurden bei 25 °C gemessen. Die erhaltenen Werte wurden zur Berechnung der Parameter der zwischen den Molekülen der verschiedenartigen gelösten Stoffe auftretenden Wechselwirkungen herangezogen. Die Koeffizienten der Virialentwicklung der Überschussenthalpien werden mit denen verglichen, die sich auf die gleichen Alkohole und andere strukturbrechende gelöste Stoffe (Harnstoff, Thioharnstoff und Biuret) enthaltenden Lösungen beziehen. Die Enthalpieparameter der Systeme Glycin-Alkohole zeigen den in der Literatur für ähnliche strukturbrechende gelöste Stoffe mitgeteilten Trend nämlich ein Maximum in der Kurve, die beim Auftragen der Koeffizienten der Wechselwirkung zwischen verschiedenartigen Molekülen gegen die Koeffizienten der Wechselwirkung zwischen den Alkoholmolekülen erhalten wird. Die Ergebnisse werden unter Annahme eines bevorzugten Austritts von Wasser aus der Kosphäre der Alkohole interpretiert.
