The zero forcing number Z(G), which is the minimum number of vertices in a zero forcing set of a graph G, is used to study the maximum nullity/minimum rank of the family of symmetric matrices described by G. It is shown that for a connected graph of order at least two, no vertex is in every zero forcing set. The positive semidefinite zero forcing number Z+(G) is introduced, and shown to be equal to |G|-OS(G), where OS(G) is the recently defined ordered set number that is a lower bound for minimum positive semidefinite rank. The positive semidefinite zero forcing number is applied to the computation of positive semidefinite minimum rank of certain graphs. An example of a graph for which the real positive symmetric semidefinite minimum rank is greater than the complex Hermitian positive semidefinite minimum rank is presented.  相似文献

A matrix trace inequality and its application   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this short paper, we give a complete and affirmative answer to a conjecture on matrix trace inequalities for the sum of positive semidefinite matrices. We also apply the obtained inequality to derive a kind of generalized Golden-Thompson inequality for positive semidefinite matrices.  相似文献

The minimum rank of a graph is the smallest possible rank among all real symmetric matrices with the given graph. The minimum semidefinite rank of a graph is the minimum rank among Hermitian positive semidefinite matrices with the given graph. We explore connections between OS-sets and a lower bound for minimum rank related to zero forcing sets as well as exhibit graphs for which the difference between the minimum semidefinite rank and these lower bounds can be arbitrarily large.  相似文献

This article studies some geometrical aspects of the semidefinite linear complementarity problem (SDLCP), which can be viewed as a generalization of the well-known linear complementarity problem (LCP). SDLCP is a special case of a complementarity problem over a closed convex cone, where the cone considered is the closed convex cone of positive semidefinite matrices. It arises naturally in the unified formulation of a pair of primal-dual semidefinite programming problems. In this article, we introduce the notion of complementary cones in the semidefinite setting using the faces of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and show that unlike complementary cones induced by an LCP, semidefinite complementary cones need not be closed. However, under R 0-property of the linear transformation, closedness of all the semidefinite complementary cones induced by L is ensured. We also introduce the notion of a principal subtransformation with respect to a face of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and show that for a self-adjoint linear transformation, strict copositivity is equivalent to strict semimonotonicity of each principal subtransformation. Besides the above, various other solution properties of SDLCP will be interpreted and studied geometrically.  相似文献

In this paper, we analyze and characterize the cone of nonsymmetric positive semidefinite matrices (NS-psd). Firstly, we study basic properties of the geometry of the NS-psd cone and show that it is a hyperbolic but not homogeneous cone. Secondly, we prove that the NS-psd cone is a maximal convex subcone of P0-matrix cone which is not convex. But the interior of the NS-psd cone is not a maximal convex subcone of P-matrix cone. As the byproducts, some new sufficient and necessary conditions for a nonsymmetric matrix to be positive semidefinite are given. Finally, we present some properties of metric projection onto the NS-psd cone.  相似文献

For an undirected simple graph G, the minimum rank among all positive semidefinite matrices with graph G is called the minimum semidefinite rank (msr) of G. In this paper, we show that the msr of a given graph may be determined from the msr of a related bipartite graph. Finding the msr of a given bipartite graph is then shown to be equivalent to determining which digraphs encode the zero/nonzero pattern of a unitary matrix. We provide an algorithm to construct unitary matrices with a certain pattern, and use previous results to give a lower bound for the msr of certain bipartite graphs.  相似文献

We define a new average - termed the resolvent average - for positive semidefinite matrices. For positive definite matrices, the resolvent average enjoys self-duality and it interpolates between the harmonic and the arithmetic averages, which it approaches when taking appropriate limits. We compare the resolvent average to the geometric mean. Some applications to matrix functions are also given.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a graph. In matrix completion theory, it is known that the following two conditions are equivalent: (i) G is a chordal graph; (ii) Every G-partial positive semidefinite matrix has a positive semidefinite matrix completion. In this paper, we relate these two conditions to constraint nondegeneracy condition in semidefinite programming and prove that they are each equivalent to (iii) For any G-partial positive definite matrix that has a positive semidefinite completion, constraint nondegeneracy is satisfied at each of its positive semidefinite matrix completions.  相似文献

We study the minimum semidefinite rank of a graph using vector representations of the graph and of certain subgraphs. We present a sufficient condition for when the vectors corresponding to a set of vertices of a graph must be linearly independent in any vector representation of that graph, and conjecture that the resulting graph invariant is equal to minimum semidefinite rank. Rotation of vector representations by a unitary matrix allows us to find the minimum semidefinite rank of the join of two graphs. We also improve upon previous results concerning the effect on minimum semidefinite rank of the removal of a vertex.  相似文献

In this paper, we show that, under certain conditions, a Hilbert space operator is positive semidefinite whenever it is positive semidefinite plus on a closed convex cone and positive semidefinite on the polar cone (with respect to the operator). This result is a generalization of a result by Han and Mangasarian on matrices. This paper was presented at the 90th Annual Meeting of the American Mathematical Society, Louisville, Kentucky, January 25–28, 1984.  相似文献

We use techniques from (tracial noncommutative) polynomial optimization to formulate hierarchies of semidefinite programming lower bounds on matrix factorization ranks. In particular, we consider the nonnegative rank, the positive semidefinite rank, and their symmetric analogs: the completely positive rank and the completely positive semidefinite rank. We study convergence properties of our hierarchies, compare them extensively to known lower bounds, and provide some (numerical) examples.

Using elementary duality properties of positive semidefinite moment matrices and polynomial sum-of-squares decompositions, we prove that the convex hull of rationally parameterized algebraic varieties is semidefinite representable (that is, it can be represented as a projection of an affine section of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices) in the case of (a) curves; (b) hypersurfaces parameterized by quadratics; and (c) hypersurfaces parameterized by bivariate quartics; all in an ambient space of arbitrary dimension.  相似文献
