To explore the potential of ternary blend bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaics as a general platform for increasing the attainable performance of organic solar cells, a model system based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the donor and two soluble fullerene acceptors, phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PC(61)BM) and indene-C(60) bisadduct (ICBA), was examined. In all of the solar cells, the overall ratio of polymer to fullerene was maintained at 1:1, while the composition of the fullerene component (PC(61)BM:ICBA ratio) was varied. Photovoltaic devices showed high short-circuit current densities (J(sc)) and fill factors (FF) (>0.57) at all fullerene ratios, while the open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) was found to vary from 0.61 to 0.84 V as the fraction of ICBA was increased. These results indicate that the V(oc) in ternary blend BHJ solar cells is not limited to the smallest V(oc) of the corresponding binary blend solar cells but can be varied between the extreme V(oc) values without significant effect on the J(sc) or FF. By extension, this result suggests that ternary blends provide a potentially effective route toward maximizing the attainable J(sc)V(oc) product (which is directly proportional to the solar cell efficiency) in BHJ solar cells and that with judicious selection of donor and acceptor components, solar cells with efficiencies exceeding the theoretical limits for binary blend solar cells could be possible without sacrificing the simplicity of a single active-layer processing step.  相似文献

Ternary organic blends have potential in realizing efficient bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells by harvesting a larger portion of the solar spectrum than binary blends. Several challenging requirements, based on the electronic structure of the components of the ternary blend and their nanoscale morphology, need to be met in order to achieve high power conversion efficiency in ternary BHJs. The properties of a model ternary system comprising two donor polymers, poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and a furan-containing, diketopyrrolopyrrole-thiophene low-bandgap polymer (PDPP2FT), with a fullerene acceptor, PC61BM, were examined. The relative miscibility of PC61BM with P3HT and PDPP2FT was examined using diffusion with dynamic secondary ion mass spectrometry (dynamic SIMS) measurements. Grazing incidence small and wide angle X-ray scattering analysis (GISAXS and GIWAXS) were used to study the morphology of the ternary blends. These measurements, along with optoelectronic characterization of ternary blend solar cells, indicate that the miscibility of the fullerene acceptor and donor polymers is a critical factor in the performance in a ternary cell. A guideline that the miscibility of the fullerene in the two polymers should be matched is proposed and further substantiated by examination of known well-performing ternary blends. The ternary blending of semiconducting components can improve the power conversion efficiency of bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics. The blending of P3HT and PDPP2FT with PC61BM leads to good absorptive coverage of the incident solar spectrum and cascading transport energy levels. The performance of this ternary blend reveals the impact of the miscibility of PC61BM in each polymer as a function of composition, highlighting an important factor for optimization of ternary BHJs. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Performance of Sb(2)S(3)-sensitized heterojunction solar cells is enhanced by embedding Au nanoparticles in the poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) hole-conducting polymer layer. The improved charge transfer/transport at the Sb(2)S(3)/P3HT/Au interface by extended interface area of the P3HT/Au counter electrode and the re-absorption of the backscattering light from the embedded Au nanoparticles enhanced the device performance: J(sc) 11.0 to 12.8 mA cm(-2), V(oc) 606 to 626 mV, fill factor (FF) 60.5 to 61.2%, and power conversion efficiency (η) 4.0 to 4.9%. Simultaneous enhancement of V(oc), J(sc), and FF in Au nanoparticle-embedded systems is mainly attributed to the improved charge collection efficiency and light harvesting efficiency of Sb(2)S(3) due to the improved charge transfer/transport in the Sb(2)S(3)/P3HT/Au interface.  相似文献

Organic bulk-heterojunctions (BHJ) and solar cells containing the trimetallic nitride endohedral fullerene 1-[3-(2-ethyl)hexoxy carbonyl]propyl-1-phenyl-Lu(3)N@C(80) (Lu(3)N@C(80)-PCBEH) show an open circuit voltage (V(OC)) 0.3 V higher than similar devices with [6,6]-phenyl-C[61]-butyric acid methyl ester (PC(61)BM). To fully exploit the potential of this acceptor molecule with respect to the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells, the short circuit current (J(SC)) should be improved to become competitive with the state of the art solar cells. Here, we address factors influencing the J(SC) in blends containing the high voltage absorber Lu(3)N@C(80)-PCBEH in view of both photogeneration but also transport and extraction of charge carriers. We apply optical, charge carrier extraction, morphology, and spin-sensitive techniques. In blends containing Lu(3)N@C(80)-PCBEH, we found 2 times weaker photoluminescence quenching, remainders of interchain excitons, and, most remarkably, triplet excitons formed on the polymer chain, which were absent in the reference P3HT:PC(61)BM blends. We show that electron back transfer to the triplet state along with the lower exciton dissociation yield due to intramolecular charge transfer in Lu(3)N@C(80)-PCBEH are responsible for the reduced photocurrent.  相似文献

Recently, ternary blend polymer solar cells have attracted great attention to improve a short-circuit current density (JSC) effectively, because complementary absorption bands can harvest the solar light over a wide wavelength range from visible to near-IR region. Interestingly, some ternary blend solar cells have shown improvements not only in JSC but also in fill factor (FF). Previously, we also reported that a ternary blend solar cell based on a low-bandgap polymer (PTB7-Th), a wide-bandgap polymer (PDCBT), and a fullerene derivative (PCBM) exhibited a higher FF than their binary analogues. Herein, we study charge transport in PTB7-Th/PDCBT/PCBM ternary blend films to address the origin of the improvement in FF. We found that hole polarons are located in PTB7-Th domains and their mobility is enhanced in the ternary blend film.  相似文献

The morphology of bulk-heterojunctions (BHJ) is critically important for conjugated polymer and fullerene blend solar cells. To alter the morphology, high pressure (gas phase) carbon dioxide (CO(2)) treatment is applied to poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blend films under ambient temperature. This process can achieve vertically phase separated morphology such that PCBM distributes toward the film surface, which is suggested by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), contact angle, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cross-sectional scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies. While pristine P3HT films do not show a significant change upon CO(2) treatment, pristine PCBM films are plasticized in high pressure CO(2). Thus, PCBM is selectively plasticized by CO(2) in the blend film and is drawn towards the surface due to depressed surface energy, although P3HT tends to distribute around the surface without CO(2). This stratification process can enhance solar cell performance. 55% improvement is achieved in the power conversion efficiency of the CO(2) treated device compared to the untreated one, indicating that CO(2) treatment can be a good candidate for optimizing the morphology and enhancing the performance of BHJ polymer solar cells.  相似文献

Polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated using a ternary blend film consisting two conjugated polymers and a soluble fullerene derivative as the donor and acceptor materials, respectively. And, to compare ternary blend system, the single‐component copolymers consisting of the repeating units of each of the copolymers, used in ternary blend solar cells, were designed and synthesized for use as the electron donor materials in binary blend solar cells. We systematically investigated the field‐effect carrier mobilities and the optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers. Under optimized conditions, the binary blend polymer systems showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) for the PSCs in the range 3.87–4.16% under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm?2). All polymers exhibited similar PCEs that did not depend on the ratio of repeating units. The binary blend solar cell containing a single‐component copolymer as the electron donor material performed better than the ternary blend solar cell in this work. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Here we demonstrate a conceptually new approach, the parallel-like bulk heterojunction (PBHJ), which maintains the simple device configuration and low-cost processing of single-junction BHJ cells while inheriting the major benefit of incorporating multiple polymers in tandem cells. In this PBHJ, free charge carriers travel through their corresponding donor-polymer-linked channels and fullerene-enriched domain to the electrodes, equivalent to a parallel-like connection. The short-circuit current (J(sc)) of the PBHJ solar cell is nearly identical to the sum of those of the individual "subcells", while the open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) is between those of the "subcells". Preliminary optimization of the PBHJ devices gives improvements of up to 40% in J(sc) and 30% in overall efficiency (η) in comparison with single-junction BHJ devices.  相似文献

A bicontinuous network formed spontaneously upon film preparation is highly desirable for bulk-heterojunction(BHJ) organic solar cells(OSCs). Many donor-acceptor(D-A) type conjugated polymers can self-assemble into polymer fibrils in the solid state and such fibril-assembly can construct the morphological framework by forming a network structure, inducing the formation of ideal BHJ morphology. Our recent works have revealed that the fibril network strategy(FNS) can control the blend morphology in fullerene, non-fullerene and ternary OSCs. It has been shown that the formation of fibril network can optimize phase separation scale and ensure efficient exciton dissociation and charge carriers transport, thus leading to impressive power conversion efficiencies(PCEs) and high fill factor(FF) values. We believe that FNS will provide a promising approach for the optimization of active layer morphology and the improvement of photovoltaic performance, and further promote the commercialization of OSCs.  相似文献

The efficient ternary all-polymer solar cells(PSCs) are designed and fabricated, using a polymer acceptor of NDP-V-C7 and analogue co-donors containing a chlorinated polymer PBCl T and classical PTB7-Th. PBCl T and PTB7-Th possess very similar chemical structure and matched energy levels to form the cascade of the co-donors. Meanwhile, benefiting from those analogous polymer structures, there is little influence of the morphology in blend film compared to their pristine polymer films. The binary PBCl T:NDP-V-C7 devices exhibit a high open-circuit voltage(V_(oc)) due to the deep HOMO level of PBCl T. The V_(oc)of all-PSCs could be finely manipulated by adjusting the content of PBCl T in blend film. The ternary all-PSCs have the more balanced charge mobility and prolonged carrier lifetime compared to the binary devices. The PBCl T also help improve the miscibility of ternary blend and suppress crystallization in films, bringing about favorable morphology with appropriate orientation and surface roughness in blend film. With the optimal processing, the champion ternary all-PSCs obtain a high PCE of 9.03%, which is about 10% enhancement compared to that of binary device. The results indicate that the ternary approach using analogue co-donors is a practical method to enhance the performance of all-PSCs.  相似文献

In this study double linked porphyrin-fullerene and phthalocyanine-fullerene dyads and a single linked phthalocyanine-fullerene dyad were studied as components in inverted organic solar cells (OSCs) equipped with the well known P3HT:PCBM bulk heterojunction as the photoactive layer. The dyad monolayers were deposited onto a surface of P3HT:PCBM by using the Langmuir-Sch?fer method, therefore forming oriented monolayers in which the electron donor (D) and the acceptor (A) exist as a close proximity pair in a 1:1 molar ratio. As a result of this structure short circuit current density (J(sc)), open circuit voltage (V(oc)), and power conversion efficiency (η) increased, while the fill factor (FF) remained the same. The devices which contained dyads with double linkage produced higher efficiencies than the one with a single linked dyad. This result can be explained in terms of molecular orientation. It was also verified that the prepared OSC devices have promising long term air stability.  相似文献

The synthesis and thin film properties of a conjugated polymer bearing graft chains that are compatible with a fullerene, chemically modified with a similar motif, are described. The graft copolymer, obtained by nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization of a vinyl triazole onto a postfunctionalized poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) backbone, is blended with a fullerene modified with a pendant triazole functionality (TAZC60). For a given ratio of polymer:TAZC60, graft copolymer (P3HT-g-PVTAZ:TAZC60) blends exhibit substantially reduced photoluminescence compared to P3HT:TAZC60 blends, while TEM analysis reveals the graft polymer undergoes extensive mixing with the fullerene to form bicontinuous 10 nm phase domains. Graft polymer blends annealed for 1 h at 140 degrees C retain their nanometer phase separation as evidenced by TEM, UV-vis, XRD, and photoluminescence analysis, and phase purity was enhanced. In contrast, P3HT:TAZC60 blends exhibit micron-sized phase-segregated morphologies before and after annealing. The chemical similarity of the triazole functionality attached to P3HT and the fullerene leads to the formation of films with uniform, stable, nanophase morphologies. This strategy may prove a useful strategy for controlling the extent of phase segregation in electron donor and acceptor blends of pi-conjugated polymers (piCPs) and fullerenes.  相似文献

For over two decades bulk‐heterojunction polymer solar cell (BHJ‐PSC) research was dominated by donor:acceptor BHJ blends based on polymer donors and fullerene molecular acceptors. This situation has changed recently, with non‐fullerene PSCs developing very rapidly. The power conversion efficiencies of non‐fullerene PSCs have now reached over 15 %, which is far above the most efficient fullerene‐based PSCs. Among the various non‐fullerene PSCs, all‐polymer solar cells (APSCs) based on polymer donor‐polymer acceptor BHJs have attracted growing attention, due to the following attractions: 1) large and tunable light absorption of the polymer donor/polymer acceptor pair; 2) robustness of the BHJ film morphology; 3) compatibility with large scale/large area manufacturing; 4) long‐term stability of the cell to external environmental and mechanical stresses. This Minireview highlights the opportunities offered by APSCs, selected polymer families suitable for these devices with optimization to enhance the performance further, and discusses the challenges facing APSC development for commercial applications.  相似文献

The evaluation of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of new materials for organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaics is difficult due to the large number of processing parameters possible. An efficient procedure to determine the optimum conditions for thermal treatment of polymer‐based bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices using in situ current‐voltage measurements is presented. The performance of a new fullerene derivative, 1,9‐dihydro‐64,65‐dihexyloxy‐1,9‐(methano[1,2] benzomethano)fullerene[60], in BHJ photovolatics with poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) was evaluated using this methodology. The device characteristics of BHJs obtained from the in situ method were found to be in good agreement with those from BHJs annealed using a conventional process. This fullerene has similar performance to 1‐(3‐methoxycarbonyl)propyl‐1‐phenyl‐[6,6]‐methano fullerene in BHJs with P3HT after thermal annealing. For devices with thickness of 70 nm, the short circuit current was 6.24 mA/cm2 with a fill factor of 0.53 and open circuit voltage of 0.65 V. The changes in the current‐voltage measurements during thermal annealing suggest that the ordering process in P3HT dominates the improvement in power conversion efficiency. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Developing new acceptor materials as alternatives to fullerene acceptors remains a challenge in the field of organic photovoltaics. We report on the synthesis and optoelectronic properties of three acceptor polymers bearing diketopyrrolopyrrole units in the main chain (PA, PB and PC). Their performance as the acceptor material in bulk heterojunction solar cells using P3HT as the donor material has been tested. The solar cells show relatively high open-circuit voltages (≥0.9 V) but low fill factors and short-circuit current densities limit the photovoltaic device performance. Formation of free charge carriers and low electron mobility are identified as the major obstacles. In blends of P3HT with PA or PB charge formation is limited, while for the P3HT:PC blend photogenerated charges recombine into the PC triplet state before they can separate, unless assisted by a reverse electric field.  相似文献

In this work, ternary organic solar cells(OSCs)combining a fullerene derivative PC71BM with a nonfullerene acceptor N2200-F blended with a polymer donor PM6 were reported.Compared with the binary systems, the highest power conversion efficiency(PCE)of 8.11%was achieved in ternary solar cells with 30 wt%N2200-F content, mainly due to the improved short-circuit current density(Jsc)and fill factor(FF).Further studies showed that the improved Jsc could attribute to the complementary abso rption of the two acceptors and the enhanced FF was originated from the higher hole mobility and the fine-tuned morphology in the ternary system. These results demonstrate that the combination of fullere ne and nonfullerene acceptors in ternary organic solar cells is a promising approach to achieve high-performance OSCs.  相似文献

For the purpose of developing poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) based copolymers with deep‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels for polymer solar cells with high open‐circuit voltage (Voc), we report a combined approach of random incorporation of 3‐cyanothiophene (CNT) and 3‐(2‐ethylhexyl)thiophene (EHT) units into the P3HT backbone. This strategy is designed to overcome CNT content limitations in recently reported P3HT‐CNT copolymers, where incorporation of more than 15% of CNT into the polymer backbone leads to impaired polymer solubility and raises the HOMO level. This new approach allows incorporation of a larger CNT content, reaching even lower‐lying HOMO levels. Importantly, a very low HOMO level of ?5.78 eV was obtained, representing one of the lowest HOMO values for exclusively thiophene‐based polymers. Lower HOMO levels result in higher Voc and higher power conversion efficiencies (PCE) compared to the previously reported P3HT‐CNT copolymers containing only 3‐hexylthiophene and CNT units. As a result, solar cells based on P3HT‐CNT‐EHT(15:15) , which contains 70% of P3HT, 15% of CNT and 15% of EHT, yield a Voc of 0.83 V in blends with PC61BM while preserving high fill factor (FF) and high short‐circuit current density (Jsc), resulting in 3.6% PCE. Additionally, we explored the effect of polymer number‐average molecular weight (Mn) on the optoelectronic properties and solar cell performance for the example of P3HT‐CNT‐EHT(15:15). The organic photovoltaic (OPV) performance improves with polymer Mn increasing from 3.4 to 6.7 to 9.6 kDa and then it declines as Mn further increases to 9.9 and to 16.2 kDa. The molecular weight study highlights the importance of not only the solar cell optimization, but also the significance of individual polymer properties optimization, in order to fully explore the potential of any given polymer in OPVs. The broader ramification of this study lies in potential application of these high band gap copolymers with low‐lying HOMO level in the development of ternary blend photovoltaics as well as tandem OPV. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We use frequency dependent capacitance measurements to probe carrier mobilities and transport parameters of six representative semiconducting polymers and some of their bulk heterojunction (BHJ) blends. With a suitable choice of a hole injection layer, well-defined signals for hole transport characterization can be obtained for the pristine polymers [J. Appl. Phys. 99, 013706 (2006)]. However, ill-defined signals with negative capacitances, arising from undesirable electron leakages, are obtained for the BHJ blends. The problem of electron leakage can be circumvented by inserting an electron blocking and trapping layer under the cathode. As a result, hole transport properties of BHJ blends can be obtained. For the BHJ of poly(3-hexylthiophene) blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PC61BM), the hole mobilities seem to be insensitive to the composition of the BHJ, indicating the P3HT component in the BHJ is well connected. On the other hand, for poly[N-9“-hepta-decanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4′,7′-di-2-thienyl-2′,1′,3′-benzothiadia zole)] doped with [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PCDTBT:PC71BM), a clear reduction of the hole mobility is observed as the polymer composition is reduced. Temperature dependent experiments were performed. The data are analyzed by the Gaussian Disorder Model. We found that the energetic disorder is independent of the composition of the BHJ. Organic photovoltaic performances of BHJ blends are also measured in this contribution. The correlation between device performance and energetic disorder of the BHJ will be discussed. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2013  相似文献
