There is a current worldwide interest for evaluating the potential reuse of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash as a sub-base in road construction and secondary building material. Yet, there is a need for exploration of the physicochemical features of the bottom ashes to ensure environmental sustainability. To this end, batchwise water extraction as promulgated by the European norm EN 12457 or the German DIN 38414-S4 tests is commonly utilized to ascertain the impact of leachable trace elements in bottom ashes on biota. However, the above extraction protocols are not properly simulating the dynamic extraction conditions occurring in the nature, whereby the analytical information provided for risk assessment is debatable. In this work, a downscaled flow-through extraction method is proposed for mimicking the leaching of hazardous trace elements (namely, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu and Cr) in MSWI bottom ashes by runoff waters more accurately than the manual counterparts. The flow assembly facilitates the full automation of standard and regulatory leaching tests by packing of a suitable amount of solid material into a column, whereupon the leaching reagent is continuously pumped through, thus yielding an accurate assessment of the environmentally significant water-extraction fraction with no effect from readsorption phenomena. The flow-through column system is exploited as a screening tool for fast evaluation of the influence of natural bottom ash weathering on the immobilization of hazardous elements to dictate the potential reuse of the solid waste. The dependence of sorption sites for humic substances on trace element leachability is also discussed. As compared to the steady-state approach, the dynamic method features the substantial shortening of the analytical extraction protocol from 24 h to just 30 min, better precision, with relative standard deviations (R.S.D.) <11% versus >20% R.S.D. for batchwise extraction, improved accuracy because of the absence of metal redistribution phenomena and minimization of manual operations as well as straightforward investigation of leaching rates for the suite of target elements.  相似文献

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in slag of fly ash from three municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerators were analyzed to observe any changes in characteristics and distribution of their congeners by melting process. Actual concentration and Toxic Equivalent (TEQ) concentration profiles of 17 major congeners of PCDDs/PCDFs for gas, fly ash and melted slag were compared. The distributions of PCDDs/PCDFs in different streams macroscopically showed similarities with the generally known profiles for emission gas from a municipal waste incinerator. The total concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs in off-gas and fly ash have been known to be a function of incineration conditions and of air pollution control device utilization; however, their normalized distributions were independent of such conditions. The concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs in the melted slag of fly ash were not related to the concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs congeners in fly ash but were rather a function of the melting furnace type and operation. The total amount of PCDDs/PCDFs in the melted slag of fly ash contained almost 150–27,000 times less dioxin than that in fly ash, however, the TEQ of dioxin in the slag was reduced by 435–43,500 times, which could enable them to be utilized as recycled construction materials. In normalized TEQ concentration profiles of 17 congeners of PCDDs/PCDFs, the ratio of PCDFs to PCDDs changed from 1.32 to 2.19 by melting, which showed relatively higher portion of furans left in melted slag than those in fly ash. By comparing reduction ratios of different congeners, PCDDs (dioxins) were relatively easier to destruct than PCDFs (furans) during melting process. The most difficult congener to destruct could be octa-chlorinated dibenzofuran (OCDF) among major congeners. For slag cooling methods, dioxin concentration in TEQ of slow cooled slag by air was four times higher than that of fast cooled slag by water. Thus cooling by water is more appropriate with the added beneficial effect of producing granules/particles, which can be utilized as roadbed materials.  相似文献

Copper and zinc were determined in municipal solid waste (MSW) samples with different deposit ages from Tianziling landfill site. The pseudototal metal contents of the MSW samples were determined following an aqua regia digestion. Operational speciation was performed using the modified BCR sequential extraction procedure. Analyses were carried out by AAS. Agreement between most of triplicate samples was acceptable. The amount of copper and zinc extracted in the sequential procedure (i.e. Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, residual) did not generally agree well with pseudototal digestion. Various MSW samples contained significant different levels of copper and zinc, but these were with different potential migrations. For example, 49.88%-76.34% of copper existed in five MSW samples was present as oxidable fraction while ~ 40% of zinc was present as acid soluble fraction. The study illustrates the feasibility and importance of modified BCR sequential extraction procedure used as evaluation method when assessing the potential mobility of heavy metal in MSW landfill.  相似文献

To obtain information on the potential of thermal conversion (pyrolysis) of municipal solid waste (MSW), a thermogravimetric study (TGA) is performed in a stream of nitrogen. Based on TGA results, pyrolysis experiments are carried out in a semi-batch reactor under inert nitrogen atmosphere. Slow pyrolysis is performed up to 550 °C (heating rate of 4 °C/min). Fast pyrolysis is performed at 450, 480, 510 and 550 °C and different input transfer rates (12 or 24 g material/min). The pyrolysis products are studied on composition and yield/distribution and investigated for their use as valuable product. The liquid obtained by slow pyrolysis separates spontaneously in a water rich product and an oily product. For all fast pyrolysis conditions, a viscous, brown oil which contains a poly(ethylene-co-propylene) wax is obtained. Composition analyses by GC/MS of the oil products (slow/fast pyrolysis) show that aliphatic hydrocarbons are the major compounds. The pyrolysis oils have high calorific value (between 35 and 44 MJ/kg), low wt% of water (around 6 wt%) and a low O/C value (between 0.2 and 0.3). The presence of waxy material is probably due to incomplete breakdown of poly(ethylene-co-propylene) present in MSW under study. The optimal pyrolysis conditions, regarding to oil yield, fuel properties, and wax yield is fast pyrolysis at 510 °C with 24 g material/min input transfer rate. The fast pyrolysis gases contain mainly hydrocarbons and have an averaged LHV around 20 MJ/Nm3. ICP-AES analyses of pyrolysis products reveal that almost none of the metals present in MSW are distributed within the liquid fractions.  相似文献

Steam classified municipal solid waste (MSW) has been studied for use as a combustion fuel, feedstock for composting, and cellulytic enzyme hydrolysis. A preliminary study has been conducted using a prototype plasma arc pyrolysis system (in cooperation with Plasma Energy Applied Technology Inc., Huntsville, AL) to convert the steam classified MSW into a pyrolysis gas and vitrified material. Using a feed rate of 50 lbs/h, 300 lbs of the material was pyrolysized. The major components of this pyrolysis gas were H2, CO, and CO2. A detailed presentation of the emission data along with details on the system used will be presented.  相似文献

This work investigates how the amounts of some important substances in a plant, and their behaviour inside the plant, depend on the levels of stress placed on the plant. To this end, model plant spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) was cultivated on soil treated with sewage sludge. The sewage sludge contained various trace elements (As, Cd, Cu, Zn), and the uptake of these trace elements placed the plant under stress. Following this, a sequential extraction procedure was employed to determine the levels and distributions of trace elements within the most important groups of compounds present in the spinach plants. Since the usual five-step sequential extraction procedure provides only general information on the distributions of elements within individual groups of organic compounds, due to the wide range of organic compounds within the individual fractions, this scheme was extended and improved through the addition of two solvent extraction steps—a butanol step (between the ethyl acetate and methanol solvent steps) and an H2O step (after the methanol+H2O solvent step). The distributions and levels of the trace elements within the main groups of compounds in spinach biomass was investigated using this new seven step sequential extraction (water free solvents: petroleum ether (A) ethyl acetate (B) butanol (C) methanol (D) water solvents: methanol+H2O (1+1; v/v) (E) H2O (F) methanol+H2O+HCl (49.3+49.3+1.4; v/v/v) (G)). The isolated fractions were characterized using IR spectroscopy and the trace element contents were determined in the individual fractions. Lipophilic compounds with low contents of Cd, Cu and Zn were separated in the first two fractions (A, B). Compounds with higher As contents (11.5–12.8% of total content) were also extracted in the second fraction, B. These two fractions formed the smallest portion of the isolated fractions. Low molecular compounds from secondary metabolism and polar lipids were separated in the third (C) and fourth (D) fractions, and high molecular compounds (mainly polypeptides and proteins) separated in the fifth and sixth fractions (E, F). The addition of the H2O solvent step was particularly useful for separating compounds that have a significant impact on trace element bounds. The methanol fraction was dominant for all treatments, and a significant decrease in the spinach biomass separated in this fraction was observed when the soil was treated with sewage sludge. Most of the As (35.5–38.8% of total content), Cu (45.0–51.6%) and Zn (39.8–47.2%) was also determined in this fraction. The G fraction (obtained after acid hydrolysis) contained polar compounds. Most of the Cd was also found in this fraction, as was a significant amount of Zn. Non-extractable residues formed the last fraction (polysaccharides, proteins).  相似文献

The revised (four-step) BCR sequential extraction procedure has been applied to fractionate the chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead and zinc contents in urban soil samples from public-access areas in five European cities. A preliminary inter-laboratory comparison was conducted and showed that data obtained by different laboratories participating in the study were sufficiently harmonious for comparisons to be made between cities and land types (e.g. parks, roadside, riverbanks, etc.). Analyte recoveries by sequential extraction, with respect to direct aqua regia digestion, were generally acceptable (100 ± 15%). Iron, nickel and, at most sites, chromium were found mainly in association with the residual phase of the soil matrix. Copper was present in the reducible, oxidisable and residual fractions, whilst zinc was found in all four sequential extracts. Manganese was strongly associated with reducible material as, in some cities, was lead. This is of concern because high lead concentrations were present in some soils (>500 mg kg−1) and the potential exists for remobilisation under reducing conditions. As would be expected, extractable metal contents were generally highest in older, more heavily industrialised cities. Copper, lead and zinc showed marked (and often correlated) variations in concentrations between sites within the same city whereas manganese and, especially, iron, did not. No overall relationships were, however, found between analyte concentrations and land use, nor between analyte partitioning and land use.  相似文献

Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) are present in the environment and can be concentrated by technical activities, particularly those involving natural resources. These NORM deposits are highly stable and very insoluble under environmental conditions at the earth's surface. However reducing or oxidant conditions or pH changes may enable a fraction of naturally occurring radionuclides to eventually be released to the environment. In this paper the analytical methods to determine the chemical and radiochemical composition of a solid waste generated in an acid phosphoric production plant was shown. The sample, analysed by gamma spectrometry and radiochemical methods, contained 210Pb and 210Po and a high activity concentration of uranium isotopes but it shows a very low quantity of 226Ra. Also a sequential extraction method consisting of five operationally-defined fractions was used to evaluate the leachability of uranium isotopes, 210Pb and 210Po. The average leaching potential observed in the sample is 97.6% for 238U, 93.2% for 210Pb and 82.4% for 210Po. Moreover the results show that 210Pb and 210Po are leachable under only extreme conditions, whereas uranium is very more soluble.  相似文献

The optimised BCR sequential extraction procedure and a 4 h 1 mol L−1 HCl partial extraction have been performed on the NIST 2711 reference material for a suite of 12 elements (Cd, Sb, Pb, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As) using magnetic sector ICP-MS. A pseudo-total aqua regia digest of NIST 2711 has also been undertaken for quality assurance purposes, and comparison of the sum of the four BCR fractions, which included an aqua regia digest on the residue, with the pseudo-total aqua regia digest has been used to assess the accuracy of the BCR partitioning approach. As a result of this work, discrepancies between previous studies about BCR partitioning of elements in NIST 2711 have been discussed and an increase in confidence about the use of BCR partitioning scheme on seven elements (Cd, Pb, Al, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn) in this standard material has been obtained. On the other hand, BCR partitioning for Sb, Cr, Co, Ni and As has been provided for the first time. Partial extraction results are also reported for the same 12 elements analysed by the optimised BCR procedure, with the partial extraction results exhibiting a strong correlation with the sum of the three labile steps of the BCR procedure.  相似文献

In this work, the original BCR extraction scheme was modified and applied to study the partitioning of metals in fly ashes. In the first step, the water-soluble fraction was investigated here. The next metal fractions were acid-soluble, reducible, and oxidisable. Two kinds of coal fly ash certified reference materials were analysed. Metal concentrations in the extracts were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The efficiency of the extraction process for each step was examined. The partitioning of metals between the individual fractions was investigated and is discussed.  相似文献

Fly ash samples from an incineration plant of urban solid waste (USW) were submitted to a stabilization/solidification process based on encapsulation with a polyester resin. With this process, a very limited increase of about 25% in weight and a compressive strength as high as 1200 kg/cm2 can be obtained. The efficiency of the process to stabilize/solidify the residues and to reduce the pollutant release was evaluated by performing both mechanical and leaching tests following the IRSA–CNR standard method. The leaching test was based on treating the sample with an acetic acid solution adjusted to pH 5.2 for 24 h under magnetic stirring. Toxic metals (Pb, Cd, and Cu) and organic pollutants (PAHs, PCBs, and OCPs) were determined in raw fly ash samples and in the leaching solutions of treated samples. Raw residues showed higher concentrations of trace metals than the regulatory limits, whereas the stabilized/solidified residues showed a concentration of all the pollutants lower than the regulatory limits and a compressive strength much higher than the suggested minimum value. Finally, a critical comparison with conventional stabilization/solidification processes based on the use of Portland cement highlighted that the polyester resin-based process performed much better in terms of the release of both organic and inorganic pollutants, thus substantially lowering the environmental impact of these residues.  相似文献

Three mineral acid sequential extraction regimes (HNO3 only, HNO3 followed by HCl and aqua regia) were applied to the NIST 2710 contaminated reference soil. The major and trace element chemical analysis data from the extractions were subjected to a chemometric self-modelling mixture resolution procedure which identified that 12 distinct physico-chemical components were extracted. The fractionation of As, Cd, Ni and Pb between these components were determined. Tentative assignments of the mineralogical sources of the components were made. The human ingestion bioaccessible fraction of As, Cd and Pb were determined using the in vitro BARGE UBM bioaccessibility test and were found to be 51.6%, 68.0% and 68.4% respectively. The relationship between the lability of the physico-chemical components and the bioaccessible fraction of the soils was investigated and the bioaccessible fractions were assigned to specific components. The extraction scheme using aqua regia was found to be the most suitable as it was the only one which extracted the iron sulphide phase in the soil.  相似文献

Sequential extraction procedures were widely applied for speciation of radioactive elements. In this study, the sequential extraction procedure developed by Martínez-Aguirre was employed for quantification of different chemical forms of thorium in the soil. The total amount of thorium in contaminated soil was much higher by four-fold than the local background value. The soil properties affect the amount of thorium and distribution of fractions in contaminated soil. Results showed that the proportion of thorium in soils from Baotou was found as the residual fraction (F5 + F6) > absorbed fraction (F3), coprecipitated fraction (F4) > carbonates fraction (F2) and exchangeable fraction (F1) that could be available to plants. The recovery, calculated by ratio of the sum of the six fractions to the pseudo-total content of thorium, was in the range from 96% to 110%. A comparison was carried out between the sequential extraction and the single extraction to evaluate the selectivity of the extractants. It was found that the amount of thorium of absorbed fraction (F3) was higher in the single extraction than that estimated in the sequential extraction, possibly duo to transform of the labile form. While for non-residual fraction analysis, the single extraction scheme was a desirable alternative to the sequential extraction procedure. According to correlativity analysis of various fractions, it might be predicted that how the non-residual fractions of thorium were directionally transformed into interrelated fractions under the changes of conditions.  相似文献

Flame retardants, surfactants, pharmaceutical and personal care products, among other compounds, have been the object of numerous environmental studies. In this chapter, the application of microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) in the development of analytical methods for several groups of organic compounds with growing concern as emerging pollutants has been considered. Compared to other extraction techniques, optimization of MAE experimental conditions is rather easy owing to the low number of influential parameters (i.e. matrix moisture, nature of the solvent, time, power, and temperature in closed vessels). The great reduction in the extraction time and solvent consumption, as well as the possibility of performing multiple extractions, increasing the sample throughput, can also be highlighted among MAE advantages. In summary, the study of several applications of MAE to environmental problems demonstrates that this technique constitutes a good alternative for the determination of organic compounds in environmental samples. It can be used as a rapid screening tool, and also to obtain detailed information on the sources, behaviour and fate of emerging pollutants in environmental matrices.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate alternatives to mechanical stirring for the extraction of the mobile fraction of metals from sediment, and analyze whether these techniques can reduce extraction time and improve reproducibility. We compare the quantities of metal extracted from BCR601 and BCR701 certified sediments using ultrasound bath, microwave-assisted extraction and the first step in the certified BCR sequential extraction procedure. Some environmentally important not-certified metals such as As, Mn, Co, Fe and Al have been included in this study. In the case of microwave-assisted extraction, we compare tests in which samples are exposed to constant, low power irradiation with tests using pulsed high power.

In the tests using the ultrasound bath, less metal was extracted than with the other extractive techniques and standard deviations were comparable to those obtained with the BCR procedure; in assays using microwaves at constant power, extraction efficiencies were different for different metals and for different reference materials and, in some cases, standard deviations were higher than those for the reference method. In contrast, tests with microwaves and constant temperature produced encouraging results: R.S.D.s lay in the 2–4% range, both for certified and not-certified metals; these values are very low compared to those for the reference method. Extraction efficiencies for certified metals were close to 100% for Cd, Zn, Cu and Ni and around 80% for Pb and Cr.  相似文献

The effect of oxidation of anoxic sediment upon the extraction of 13 elements (Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As) using the optimised Community Bureau of Reference of the European Commission (BCR) sequential extraction procedure and a dilute acid partial extraction procedure (4 h, 1 mol L−1 HCl) was investigated. Elements commonly associated with the sulfidic phase, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe exhibited the most significant changes under the BCR sequential extraction procedure. Cd, Cu, Zn, and to a lesser extent Pb, were redistributed into the weak acid extractable fraction upon oxidation of the anoxic sediment and Fe was redistributed into the reducible fraction as expected, but an increase was also observed in the residual Fe. For the HCl partial extraction, sediments with moderate acid volatile sulfide (AVS) levels (1-100 μmol g−1) showed no significant difference in element partitioning following oxidation, whilst sediments containing high AVS levels (>100 μmol g−1) were significantly different with elevated concentrations of Cu and Sn noted in the partial extract following oxidation of the sediment. Comparison of the labile metals released using the BCR sequential extraction procedure (ΣSteps 1-3) to labile metals extracted using the dilute HCl partial extraction showed that no method was consistently more aggressive than the other, with the HCl partial extraction extracting more Sn and Sb from the anoxic sediment than the BCR procedure, whilst the BCR procedure extracted more Cr, Co, Cu and As than the HCl extraction.  相似文献

The distribution and speciation of toxic metals in industrial wastewater sludge (IWS) was investigated. In this work, the modified BCR three-stage sequential extraction procedure was applied to the fractionation of Cr Pb Ni, and Cd in untreated industrial wastewater sludge from industrial sites in Hyderabad (Pakistan). The extracts were analyzed using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The procedure was evaluated using a certified reference material for soil mixed with sewage sludge BCR 483. The results from the partitioning study indicate that more easily mobilized forms (acid exchangeable) of Cd were dominant. The oxidizable fraction was dominant for all four toxic metals. Metal recovery was good, with <4% difference between the total metal recovered through the extractant steps and the total metal determined after microwave digestion. Lixiviation tests (DIN 38414-S4) were used to evaluate the leaching of toxic species from IWS, and it was observed that levels of leachable toxic metals were low compared to the amount of metal extracted in the exchangeable fraction of the BCR protocol.  相似文献

Mobilisation of iron in building stone due to acid rainfall and chemical cleaning may cause its uneven precipitation, discoloration of the stone and the formation of an indurated iron-cemented surface crust. Breaching of the crust can result in accelerated internal excavation, by, for example, salt weathering. Therefore, to understand the decay of iron-rich sandstone, the conditions necessary for iron mobilisation and precipitation and how amorphous iron oxides bind trace elements within the stone must be known. This preliminary study moves away from traditional total-element analysis procedures that provide limited information on internal elemental distributions and mobility. A selective extraction protocol, developed to study element speciation in soils and palaeosols, was modified to extract metals from operationally defined phases within a weathered, iron-rich sandstone from a ca. 150-year-old building in Belfast, N. Ireland. These phases include amorphous Fe and Mn oxides that are known to be effective scavengers of trace metal ions and constitute the principal components of surface stains and cement. Knowledge of the relationships between Fe and Mn and associated trace metal suites may eventually allow the latter to be used as tracers for Fe/Mn movement in stone.  相似文献

An analytical methodology incorporating a molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction procedure (MISPE) has been developed for the determination of parabens in environmental solid samples. Four different polymers were prepared combining the use of acetonitrile or toluene as porogen, and 4-vinylpyridine (VP) or methacrylic acid (MAA) as monomer, using benzylparaben (BzP) as a template molecule. Although all the polymers were able to recognize the template in rebinding experiments, the MIP prepared in toluene using MAA showed better performance. This polymer was also capable of recognizing other parabens (methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, propyl, isobutyl, butyl and benzylparaben) allowing to develop an appropriated MISPE procedure for this family of compounds. The extraction of the parabens from environmental solid samples was performed by ultrasonic assisted extraction in small columns (SAESC), and this procedure next to MISPE as clean-up step followed by HPLC-UV determination was successfully used for the determination of parabens in soil and sediment samples of different locations. Recoveries ranging from 80% to 90% have been achieved depending on the compound and the samples, and limits of detection (LODs) were under 1 ng g−1 for all the compounds, making this method suitable for the determination of parabens in environmental solid matrices. The method was further applied to the determination of paraben contents in real samples, founding levels up to 11.5 ng g−1 in sea sediments.  相似文献
