The Helmholtz and Maxwell equations describing fields of the beam type are solved. The energy streamlines in a vector beam coincide with the generatrices of an unparted hyper-boloid of revolution and are twisted. The angular momentum of a monochromatic electromagnetic field in coordinate space naturally splits into orbital and spin parts. The orbital angular momentum is perpendicular to the Poynting vector, and the spin part is parallel to it. The method proposed by the present authors to deal analytically with the problem of Anderson localization via disorder [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 14, 13777 (2002)] is generalized for higher spatial dimensions D. In this way the generalized Lyapunov exponents for diagonal correlators of the wave function, 2n,m , can be calculated analytically and exactly. This permits to determine the phase diagram of the system. For all dimensions D > 2 one finds intervals in the energy and the disorder where extended and localized states coexist: the metal-insulator transition should thus be interpreted as a first-order transition. The qualitative differences permit to group the systems into two classes: low-dimensional systems (2D 3), where localized states are always exponentially localized and high-dimensional systems (D Dc=4), where states with non-exponential localization are also formed. The value of the upper critical dimension is found to be D0=6 for the Anderson localization problem; this value is also characteristic of a related problem – percolation.  相似文献

Maxwell's equations are formulated as a relativistic Schrödinger-like equation for a single photon of a given helicity. The probability density of the photon satisfies an equation of continuity. The energy eigenvalue problem gives both positive and negative energies. The Feynman concept of antiparticles is applied here to show that the negative-energy states going backward in time (t –t) give antiphoton states, which are photon states with the opposite helicity. For a given mode, properties of a photon, such as energy, linear momentum, total angular momentum, orbital angular momentum, and spin are equivalent in both classical electromagnetic field theory and quantum theory. The single-photon Schrödinger equation is field (or second) quantized in a gauge-invariant way to obtain the quantum field theory of many photons. This approach treats the quantization of electromagnetic radiation in a way that parallels the quantization of material particles and, thus, provides a unified treatment.  相似文献

Quantum Hall plateaus are entered via quantized cyclotron (QC) cloud-chamber orbits that have Landau-level (LL) energies and uniquely-defined angular momenta. The conservation of angular momentum in the quantum Hall system requires both canonical and magnetic angular momentum components, which add together to form the invariant kinematic angular momentum. The only LL radial eigenfunctions that satisfy the conservation-law requirements of the QC to LL transition are the u n,l eigenstates u n,2n+1, where n = 0, 1, 2, .... These same eigenstates uniquely have the correct scaled sizes to tile the observed families of = 1/(2n + 1) Hall plateaus. Quantum Hall plateau formation is a direct consequence of this tiling.  相似文献

Geodesics for the NUT metric and gravitational monopoles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In order to provide insight about the physical interpretation of the NUT parameter, we solve the geodesic equations for the NUT metric. We show that the properties of NUT geodesics are similar to the properties of trajectories for charged particles orbiting about a magnetic monopole. In summary, we show that (1) the orbits lie on the surface of a cone, (2) the conserved total angular momentum is the sum of the orbital angular momentum plus the angular momentum due to the monopole field, (3) the monopole field angular momentum is independent of the separation between the source of the gravitational field and the test particle, and (4) the geodesics are almost spherically symmetric. The strong similarities between the NUT geodesics and the electromagnetic monopole suggest that the NUT metric is an exact solution for a gravitational magnetic monopole. However, the subtle difference of being only almost spherically symmetric implies that the analogy is not perfect. The almost spherically symmetric nature of the NUT geodesics suggest that the energy of the Dirac string makes a contribution to the solution. We also construct exact solutions for special orbits, discuss a twin paradox, and speculate about the Dirac quantization condition for a gravitational magnetic monopole.  相似文献

The states of N two-level atoms can be mapped onto the eigenvectors of angular momentum (with j=N/2) and this system in interaction with a radiation field constitutes a fundamental model in Quantum Optics. There from one may construct atomic coherent states and minimum uncertainty packets. The squeezing of such states is of considerable contemporary interest. We show that the properties of squeezed atomic states are most elegantly and economically expressed in terms of pseudo-Hermitian operators and through Wigner D-matrices and their analytical continuation.  相似文献

A new approach is presented for evaluation of the muon sticking probability to helium in muon-catalyzed fusion reactions. Use of the sudden approximation is avoided. The probability s of muon sticking to helium in the reaction dtµ µ4He+n, calculated with the new method, agrees with previous results. Moreover, the energy and angular distributions for the emitted muon, as well as the dependence of ws on the energy radiated during the muon-catalyzed fusion event, have been evaluated.  相似文献

The local sensitivity of photo-multiplier photo-cathodes
The influence of the non-uniform distribution of the sensitivity of a photo-multiplier photo-cathode on the spectrum shape of the output pulses from a scintillation detector is studied. Methods of scanning the local sensitivity and determining its distribution function are described. The theory was compared qualitatively with measurement on a slow-neutron detector from a mixture of zinc sulphate and boric acid.

The rocking curves of Ge (111), (220), (333) for CuK 1 radiation were measured by means of the triple-crystal diffractometer. Perfect silicon single crystals, cut parallel to the (111) plane were used in the monochromator part of the triple-crystal diffractometer. The results prove the suitability of such a monochromator for studying diffraction patterns.

The nature of physical measurements performed on microscopic systems is discussed, and it is suggested that the procedures which are conventionally referred to as measurements fall into at least three different categories. The connection between observation processes and irreversible processes is stressed. The customary quantum mechanical treatment of irreversible processes is discussed, and its deficiencies from the philosophical point of view are criticized. The standpoint that quantum mechanics should not be considered as a basic philosophical system but rather as an immensely useful tool is defended. Some attempts at developing a more basic theory are discussed, and a hypothesis is put forward concerning the role of entropy within some possible future nonlocal hidden-variable theory.  相似文献

The change in integrated intensity of the (200) reflections of a solid solution during the formation of G.P. zones was measured and compared with the change in the character of the diffuse streaks corresponding to them. It was found that the. formation of G.P. zones does not lead to a decrease in primary extinction despite the great changes in the distribution of the copper atoms. It was shown that the formation of a precipitate accompanied by the formation of crystallographically incoherent boundaries greatly decreases the primary extinction.

The experimental study of the dependence of the electroluminescence brightness on the voltage confirms the correctness of the mechanism of electroluminescence, based on impact ionization in parts of the crystal where the electric field is concentrated. A study of the photoluminescent and electroluminescent spectra of phosphors containing two activators (copper and an element of rare earth) permits the determination of the magnitude of the volume of the crystal in which electroluminescence occurs. A study of the influence of the stored light sum on the brightness of electroluminescence and a study of the rate of growth of the variable and constant components of electroluminescence point to the fact that the excitation is transferred from the region of field concentration to the whole volume of the crystal.

In connection with another article by the author, we show how it might be possible to travel faster than the speed of light. We show that for clocks and rods moving faster than the speed of light, we get instead of time dilation and Lorentz contraction, respectively, time contraction and Lorentz expansion, respectively. It is shown that this paper is in confirmation with earlier articles dealing with this subject.  相似文献

The paper gives the results of measuring the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity(T), the Hall coefficientR H (T) and the magnetic susceptibility(T) forn-type CdSnAs2. The effective mass of the electrons was determined by analysis of the measured dependences on the basis of the simple theory for an isotropic non-degenerate semi-conductor. It was found to bem n /m 0=2×10–2 in the intrinsic region and does not depend on the temperature; the energy gap ise g 0=0·26 eV and the molar susceptibility of the CdSnAs2 lattice G mol=–112× ×10–6. The mobility of the electrons in the intrinsic region reaches a value of n =25 000 cm2V–1sec–1 at 500°K and decreases exponentially n T –1.67 with rising temperature. The density of CdSnAs2 was determined pyknometrically,g9=5·35 g cm–3. The measurements were made on ann-type polycrystalline sample consisting of crystals a few millimetres in diameter, which at a temperature of 100°K had a free electron concentration ofn s =6×1016 cm–3.

The Gelfand-Levitan equation for the kernelP(r, r) (withrr) is formulated and then applied for determining the scattering potential in the scattering of slow neutrons on protons (for the case when the dependence of the nuclear forces on the spins can be neglected and onlys-scattering need be considered). The potentials obtained are the same as the Bargmann ones, found by a different method.
