Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) measurements are presented for a sample of installed optical fibers. High PMD values are fairly common, with 9 of the 71 fibers having PMD coefficients above 0.3 ps km1 2. The results are analyzed in terms of the age of the fibers and the type of cabling. Measurements are presented for a number of concatenated fiber links, and the results show that the PMD value of the link is approximately equal to the square root of the sum of the squares of the PMD values of the individual fibers.

Although fiber spinning is known to reduce polarization mode dispersion (PMD) effects in optical fibers, relatively few studies have been performed of the dependence of the reduction factor on the strength of random birefringence fluctuations. In this paper, we apply a general mathematical model of random fiber birefringence to sinusoidally spun fibers. We find that while even in the presence of random birefringence perturbations the maximum reduction of PMD is still obtained when the phase matching condition is satisfied, the degree of PMD reduction and the probability distribution function of the DGD both vary with the random birefringence profiles.

Non-zero dispersion fiber (NZDF) ribbon cable has recently become a considerable alternative in long-haul high-speed network construction. Since long-distance high-bit rate transmission requires low polarization mode dispersion (PMD), it is very important to know the PMD performance of this type of optical fiber cables. In this paper, we report experimental analysis of effects of the cable design and environmental parameters, in particular ribbon thickness, positions of fibers in the ribbon, flexing and vibration, on PMD performances of several slotted-core fiber ribbon cables. Results show that ribbon thickness and positions of fibers in the ribbon alter the PMD values of NZDF ribbon cables. Also, 23% and 11% PMD variations have been determined in flexing and vibration experiments, respectively. Moreover, it has been observed that vibration amplitude has significant effects and vibration frequency has little effects (14% and 6% variations, respectively) on fiber PMD. Results are important for understanding effects of installation conditions and wind, especially for aerial fibers, on PMD values of cables.

In this paper, by introducing a two-stages polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensator after a optical fiber link with a large PMD, we compensated over 270ps first-order and 2000ps2 high-order PMD in a optical fiber link with super high PMD. Our experimental results shows that, the compensators based on the two-stages of compensator can be used to PMD compensation in a 20Gb/s OTDM system with 60 km high PMD fiber. Before compensation,270ps DGD is became into max. 7ps after compensation. At simultaneity, the tunable FBG have a function of dispersion compensation.

The scaling properties of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in spun fibers are studied. Simple equations have been obtained to describe the scaling properties of spun fibers as a function of intrinsic fiber birefringence, spin parameters, and mode-coupling length under both optimal and nonoptimal spin conditions. In particular, a counterintuitive result is found for fibers with perfect spin optimization, in which case the fiber PMD increases as the mode-coupling length is shortened. The results are verified with direct numerical modeling.

In this paper, the impacts of Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) on the performance of high-speed optical communication system have been reported at different bit rates. The two systems are modeled using older fibers with same PMD coefficient at different bit rates and third is with the new fiber with less PMD coefficient than that of the previous two. The attenuation, chromatic dispersion and non-linear effects have been disabled, so that all the variation of the results is due to PMD. The bit rate is varied from 2.5 to 40 Gbps and the length is varied from 1000 to 20,000 km. It is shown that the impact of PMD increases with the bit rate of system. It is also reported that the impact of PMD becomes intolerable at the bit rates of more than 40 Gbps. And also the PMD produces very minute impact on the system performance for same bit rate with the variation in the fiber length.

In this paper, we employ several general models (introduced in Part I) for the evolution of optical fiber birefringence with longitudinal distance to analyze, both theoretically and numerically, the behavior of the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in single mode fibers. We find that while the probability distribution function of the differential group delay varies along the fiber length as in existing models, the dependence of the root mean square differential group delay (DGD) on fiber length differs noticeably from earlier predictions.

Jones matrix for second-order polarization mode dispersion
A Jones matrix is constructed for a fiber that exhibits first- and second-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD). It permits the modeling of pulse transmission for fibers whose PMD vectors have been measured or whose statistics have been determined by established PMD theory. The central portion of our model is a correction to the Bruyère model.

This paper presents the influences of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) on the performance of soliton transmission system in birefringent fibers. Dispersive waves generated in single mode fibers due to PMD degrade the soliton transmission system in two aspects. First, solitons continuously lose their energy, thus cause enhancement in pulse width. Second, the dispersive waves interact with neighboring pulses and cause distortion in a sequence of pulses. Both these effects reduce the effective bit-rate and degrade the performance of high-speed optical transmission systems. Optical fibers with large group velocity dispersion (GVD) have less dispersive waves and are relatively robust to pulse broadening, but it enhances the interaction between the adjacent pulses. In this paper, we analyzed these effects of PMD on soliton propagation in birefringent fibers and introduced nonlinear gain devices with perturbation terms proportional to second and fourth power of amplitudes to reduce these effects. We proposed Symmetric Split-Step Fourier Method to solve the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations (CNLSE); which yields better results over the existing Split-Step Fourier Method.

The spin profile of a fiber is usually optimized to reduce transmission impairments caused by polarization-mode dispersion (PMD). In this paper, we show that fiber-optic-based plug-and-play quantum-key distribution systems using polarization modulation and fibers with a spin profile optimal for PMD may suffer from a large Faraday rotation induced by the geomagnetic field. We show that, for periodic spin patterns of small periods, the Faraday rotation is minimum when no spin is applied to the fiber.

A simple analytical solution is derived from coupled-mode theory to describe the evolution of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in spun fibers. For practical fibers with a beat length greater than a few meters, the solution is valid for a whole category of periodic spin profiles. We find that the PMD change factor is independent of the intrinsic birefringence of the fiber and the fiber PMD scales linearly with the fiber length in the short length regime. This solution allows us to determine phase-matching conditions for spun fibers, in which the PMD evolves periodically along the fiber. An example of determining the phase-matching conditions of sinusoidal-type spin profiles is given.

We analyze the effects of residual stress on the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) of fibers made with different types of spinning. A theoretical scheme is developed from a previous model by the incorporation of a circular birefringence term contributed by residual torsional stress. It is found that the residual stress can significantly affect the PMD of unidirectionally spun fibers when the fiber birefringence is low, but it has little effect on the PMD of bidirectionally spun fibers.

This paper presents a model that described the process of inter-influence between cross phase modulation (XPM) and polarization effects such as polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependant loss (PDL) in an optical fiber communication system. Previous papers have discussed PMD-PDL and PMD-XPM effects in separate models, but in this work we developed a model that is capable of characterizing and evaluating PMD, PDL and XPM simultaneously. From the model, we found that PMD and PDL can be affected by XPM. The presence of XPM changed the vector directions of PMD and PDL in Stokes space.

Wavelength division multiplexed metropolitan networks have been attracting increasing attention in the networking research community. We discuss an issue that is pertinent to node design and transmission systems in these networks. The problem of node-induced crosstalk and its interaction with fiber nonlinearities is investigated. In this respect, we consider transmission systems that are based on nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber rings with simple optical add/drop multiplexing nodes. The system power penalty due to the crosstalk/nonlinear interaction phenomenon is calculated for several cases. Dependence of this penalty on the frequency difference between signal and crosstalk carriers, input-signal power, and extinction ratio is investigated. It is shown that the design of regional and metropolitan networks or links with physical spans in excess of 200 km has to take this crosstalk/nonlinear interaction phenomenon into consideration.

Polarization mode dispersion in long single-mode-fiber links: A review
Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is the interplay of birefringence (both systematic and random) and coupling between orthogonal polarizations, in a single-mode fiber. PMD will set the ultimate limit to the fiber length × capacity product, when all the deterministic causes of dispersion are under control. We review the state of the art in this field, with emphasis on experiments, which demonstrate that the behavior of long links can be predicted with full confidence, in a statistical sense, from factory-based tests on individual cables. Successful application of the same experimental technique to detecting fiber stresses is also demonstrated.

We demonstrate both numerically and experimentally that the phase-change due to fiber nonlinearities induces a bit-pattern-dependent rotation of the state-of-polarization which translates to uncertainty in the principal states of polarization. This effect severely limits the performance of the first-order PMD post-compensation and suggests the use of in-line compensators. Our simulation shows that fiber nonlinearities cause significant distortion (more than 4-dBm Q-penalty after 600-km transmission at 10 Gbit/s) after first-order PMD compensation. For optical powers as low as 3 dBm/channel in systems where PMD is not uniformly distributed along the transmission link, first-order PMD compensation may be ineffective.

This article presents a new approach to the combined analysis of the first and second-order polarization mode dispersion (SOPMD) and shows their importance in optical communication systems performance. How it affects the relation between second-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and the differential group delay (DGD) in a single mode fiber is discussed. The analysis is based on time or wavelength and temperature variations changing/impacting PMD and DGD measured values. We present long term statistical characteristics of second-order PMD over a PMD emulator, and investigate the correlation between SOPMD, depolarization (DEP) and polarization dependent chromatic dispersion (PCD). Some authors calculate these modes from measurements obtained from the first order polarization mode dispersion, assuming a positive correlation between these effects, but this not the real relationship between them. A new interpretation of SOPMD was used to analyze the problem of the spectral stability in terms of the temperature. Actual techniques for determination SOPMD, consequently DEP and PCD, use the variation in time and/or wavelength. In some studies the results obtained for SOPMD are correlated to first-order PMD (FOPMD). This paper shows, based on measurements, that the correlation between first and second order Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) in the case where the last one is a function of the temperature can assume positive or negative values.
