Summary One considers a system L[u]=0 of PDEs, quasi-linear (according to [1]) and of order m, which possesses a bicharacteristic line , as it happens in the hyperbolic case. For v=0, , –m (>0) let u(v) be a discontinuity wave of order m+v that solves the system above and whose discontinuity hypersurface includes . The corresponding transport equations along are considered. Furthermore some interesting cases are pointed out, in which these equations turn out to be mutually equivalent in a suitable sense. Some theorems are stated to compare the transport equations for the discontinuities of the above kinds, that are connected with the systems dhL[u]/dth=0 (h=0, , –m) and/or the linearization of the system L[u]=0 around any regular solution of it.

An experimental study was done to quantify the effects of a variety of background particulates on the delayed laminar-turbulent transition of a thermally stabilized boundary layer in water. A Laser-Doppler Velocimeter system was used to measure the location of boundary layer transition on a 50 mm diameter, 9:1 fineness ratio ellipsoid. The ellipsoid had a 0.15 m RMS surface finish. Boundary layer transition locations were determined for length Reynolds numbers ranging from 3.0 × 106 to 7.5 × 106. The ellipsoid was tested in three different heating conditions in water seeded with particles of four distinct size ranges. For each level of boundary layer heating, measurements of transition were made for clean water and subsequently, water seeded with 12.5 m, 38.9 m, 85.5 m and 123.2 m particles, alternately. The three surface heating conditions tested were no heating, T = 10°C and T = 15°C where T is the difference between the inlet model heating water temperature, T i, and free stream water temperature, T . The effects of particle concentration were studied for 85.5 m and 123.2 m particulates. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. The 12.5 m and 38.9 m particles has no measurable effect on transition for any of the test conditions. However, transition was significantly affected by the 85.5 m and 123.2 m particles. Above a length Reynolds number of 4 × 106 the boundary layer transition location moved forward on the body due to the effect of the 85.5 m particles for all heating conditions. The largest percentage changes in transition location from clean water, were observed for 85.5 m particles seeded water.Transition measurements made with varied concentrations of background particulates indicated that the effect of the 85.5 m particles on the transition of the model reached a plateau between 2.65 particulates/ml concentration and 4.2 particles/ml. Measurements made with 123.3 m particles at concentrations up to 0.3 part/ml indicated no similar plateau.  相似文献

Bifurcation phenomena from standing pulse solutions of the problem is considered. (>0) is a sufficiently small parameter and is a positive one. It is shown that there exist two types of destabilization of standing pulse solutions when decreases. One is the appearance of travelling pulse solutions via the static bifurcation and the other is that of in-phase breathers via the Hopf bifurcation. Furthermore which type of destabilization occurs first with decreasing is discussed for the piecewise linear nonlinearities f and g.  相似文献

We consider the parametrized family of equations tt ,u- xx u-au+u 2 2 u=O,x(0,L), with Dirichlet boundary conditions. This equation has finite-dimensional invariant manifolds of solutions. Studying the reduced equation to a four-dimensional manifold, we prove the existence of transversal homoclinic orbits to periodic solutions and of invariant sets with chaotic dynamics, provided that =2, 3, 4,.... For =1 we prove the existence of infinitely many first integrals pairwise in involution.  相似文献

Let D R N be a cone with vertex at the origin i.e., D = (0, )x where S N–1 and x D if and only if x = (r, ) with r=¦x¦, . We consider the initial boundary value problem: u t = u+u p in D×(0, T), u=0 on Dx(0, T) with u(x, 0)=u 0(x) 0. Let 1 denote the smallest Dirichlet eigenvalue for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on and let + denote the positive root of (+N–2) = 1. Let p * = 1 + 2/(N + +). If 1 < p < p *, no positive global solution exists. If p>p *, positive global solutions do exist. We study a general mathematical model of a classical system of infinitely many point particles. The space X of infinite particle configurations is equipped with a natural topology as well as a measurable structure related to it. It is also connected with a family {X A } of local spaces of finite configurations indexed by bounded open sets A in the one-particle space E. A theorem analogous to Kolmogoroff's fundamental theorem for stochastic processes is proved, according to which a consistent family { A } of local probability measures A defined on the X A gives rise to a unique probability measure on X. We also study the problem of integral representation for positive linear forms defined over some linear space of real functions on X. We prove that a positive linear form F(f), defined for functions f in the class C+P, admits a uniquely determined integral representation F(f)= f () d, where is a probability measure over X.

An analytical approximation for the frozen laminar boundary layer flow of a binary mixture
An analytical approximation is derived for the frozen laminar boundary layer flow of a partially dissociated binary mixture along a strongly cooled flat plate. The concentration at the wall is shown to be a universal function of the Damkohler-number for the wall reaction. The Damkohlernumber also serves as a parameter of shape for the concentration profile which is presented in analytical form. The heat transfer at the wall depending on a conduction and a diffusion flux is derived and discussed. The ratio of these fluxes is expressed as a function of the Damkohler-number if the boundary conditions are known.

In ordinary diffusion theory the transfer of properties is determined by the local gradients of the corresponding fields. As the mean free path increases, the flux density becomes an integral quantity and is determined by a neighborhood of the point under consideration of the order of a few mean free paths. In a previous article [1], the author proposed a model for a one-dimensional transfer process in linear rarefield-gas problems based on the analogy with radiative transfer. The same approach, though without directional averaging, is used in the present paper to analyze the linearized Couette flow problem. The solution obtained here has the properties of the solution obtained by more exact methods based on the solution of the Boltzmann equation [3-4].Nomenclature pxy shear stress - c mean thermal velocity of molecules - 2/3 A mean free path - d half-width of channel - ±w0 plate velocity - c nonequilibriumvalue of momentum flux density - y transverse coordinate - ratio of specific heats - W dimensionless velocity - Pxy shear stress scaled with respect to the shear stress in free-molecule flow - Y dimensionless coordinate - W1(y) velocity distribution according to Millikan's solution - coefficient of viscosity - R Reynolds number - K Knudsen number  相似文献

In this paper, we show that the maximum principle holds for quasilinear elliptic equations with quadratic growth under general structure conditions. Two typical particular cases of our results are the following. On one hand, we prove that the equation (1) {ie77-01} where {ie77-02} and {ie77-03} satisfies the maximum principle for solutions in H 1()L(), i.e., that two solutions u 1, u 2H1() L() of (1) such that u 1u2 on , satisfy u 1u2 in . This implies in particular the uniqueness of the solution of (1) in H 0 1 ()L().On the other hand, we prove that the equation (2) {ie77-04} where fH–1() and g(u)>0, g(0)=0, satisfies the maximum principle for solutions uH1() such that g(u)¦Du|{2L1(). Again this implies the uniqueness of the solution of (2) in the class uH 0 1 () with g(u)¦Du|{2L1().In both cases, the method of proof consists in making a certain change of function u=(v) in equation (1) or (2), and in proving that the transformed equation, which is of the form (3) {ie77-05}satisfies a certain structure condition, which using ((v1 -v 2)+)n for some n>0 as a test function, allows us to prove the maximum principle.  相似文献

The bi-harmonic Green's functionG(r,r) for the infinite strip region -1y1, -<x<, with the boundary conditionsG=G/y ony=±1, is obtained in integral form. It is shown thatG has an elegant bi-linear series representation in terms of the (Papkovich-Fadle) eigenfunctions for the strip. This representation is then used to show that any function bi-harmonic in arectangle, and satisfying the same boundary conditions asG, has a unique representation in the rectangle as an infinite sum of these eigenfunctions. For the case of the semi-infinite strip, we investigate conditions on sufficient to ensure that is exponentially small asx. In particular it is proved that this is so, solely under the condition that be bounded asx.A corresponding pattern of results is established for the wedge of general angle. The Green's function is obtained in integral form and expressed as a bilinear series of the (Williams) eigenfunctions. These eigenfunctions are proved to be complete for all functions bi-harmonic in anannular sector (and satisfying the same boundary conditions as the Green's function). As an application it is proved that if an elastostatic field exists in a corner region with free-free boundaries, and with either (i) the total strain energy bounded, or (ii) the displacement field bounded, then this field has a unique representation as a sum of those Williams eigenfunctions whichindividually posess the properties (i), (ii). The methods used here extend to all other linear homogeneous boundary conditions for these geometries. On leave of absence at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. Diffusion in anisotropic porous media   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An experimental system was constructed in order to measure the two distinct components of the effective diffusivity tensor in transversely isotropic, unconsolidated porous media. Measurements were made for porous media consisting of glass spheres, mica particles, and disks made from mylar sheets. Both the particle geometry and the void fraction of the porous media were determined experimentally, and theoretical calculations for the two components of the effective diffusivity tensor were carried out. The comparison between theory and experiment clearly indicates that the void fraction and particle geometry are insufficient to characterize the process of diffusion in anisotropic porous media. Equations are derived for the gasdynamics of a dense plasma confined by a multiple-mirror magnetic field. The limiting cases of large and small mean free paths have been analyzed earlier: 0 and k, where is the length of an individual mirror machine, 0 is the size of the mirror, and k is the mirror ratio. The present work is devoted to a study of the intermediate range of mean free paths 0 k. It is shown that in this region of the parameters the process of expansion of the plasma has a diffusional nature, and the coefficients of transfer of the plasma along the magnetic field are calculated.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 6, pp. 14–19, November–December, 1974.The authors thank D. A method is proposed for determining the shear viscosity behavior of highly concentrated suspensions at low and high shear-rates through the use of a formulation that is a function of three parameters signifying the effects of particle size distribution. These parameters are the intrinsic viscosity [], a parametern that reflects the level of particle association at the initiation of motion and the maximum packing concentration m. The formulation reduces to the modified Eilers equation withn = 2 for high shear rates. An analytical method was used for the calculation of maximum packing concentration which was subsequently correlated with the experimental values to account for the surface induced interaction of particles with the fluid. The calculated values of viscosities at low and high shear-rates were found to be in good agreement with various experimental data reported in literature. A brief discussion is also offered on the reliability of the methods of measuring the maximum packing concentration. r = /0 relative viscosity of the suspension - volumetric concentration of solids - k n coefficient which characterizes a specific effect of particle interactions - m maximum packing concentration - r,0 relative viscosity at low shear-rates - [] intrinsic viscosity - n, n parameter that reflects the level of particle interactions at low and high shear-rates, respectively - r, relative viscosity at high shear-rates - (m)s, (m)i, (m)l packing factors for small, intermediate and large diameter classes - v s, vi, vl volume fractions of small, intermediate and large diameter classes, respectively - si, sl coefficient to be used in relating a smaller to an intermediate and larger particle group, respectively - is, il coefficient to be used in relating an intermediate to a smaller and larger particle group, respectively - ls, li coefficient to be used in relating a larger to a smaller and intermediate particle group, respectively - m0 maximum packing concentration for binary mixtures - m,e measured maximum packing concentration - m,c calculated maximum packing concentration  相似文献

It is found that the load capacity of a magnetohydrodynamic thrust bearing with a rotating disk can be increased by rotating the axial magnetic field at a suitable speed in a direction opposite to that of the disk rotation. This method of improving the bearing performance is considered to be efficient if the Hartmann number is not too large. Thus for a given load, the size and weight of the magnet to be used in a thrust bearing with rotating field can be reduced considerably.Nomenclature a radius of plenum recess - b outside disk radius - B 0 magnetic induction of applied axial magnetic field - hE 0 1/2/a 1/2, nondimensionalized electric field - E 0 radial electric field at r=a - E r radial electric field - h half of lubricant film thickness - M (B 0 2 h 2/)1/2, Hartmann number - P pressure - P e pressure at r=b - P 0 pressure at r=a - Q volume flow rate of lubricant - Q 0 volume flow rate of a nonrotating bearing in the absence of applied magnetic field - r radial coordinate - u, v fluid velocity components in radial and circumferential directions, respectively - W load capacity of bearing - W 0 load capacity of a nonrotating bearing in the absence of a magnetic field having a flow rate which the same bearing would have at Hartmann number M - z axial coordinate - azimuthal coordinate - coefficient of viscosity of lubricant - e magnetic permeability - fluid density - electrical conductivity - angular velocity of rotating disk - C critical disk velocity at which W=0 - M angular velocity of axial magnetic field - optimum angular velocity of magnetic field On leave of absence from Department of Aero-Space Engineering, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame (Ind.), U.S.A.  相似文献

Conclusions We have investigated solutions of equation (3) when 2 is an eigenvalue of the linearized operator (13) and when it is not. In Section 4 we have shown that for 0 and 2 = i 2 we have exactly two nontrivial solutions which bifurcate to the right of i 2 ; these solutions are shown to exist in an interval ( i 2 , i 2 + 0). The method of Section 3 may then be used to extend these two solutions to the right of i 2 + 0 providing that 2= i 2 + 0 is not an eigenvalue of the linear operator (13) evaluated at = ± 1. Either a solution can be uniquely extended, or there exists a value of 2where the bifurcation method must be applied again3.While the method used here gives the exact number of solutions bifurcating from i 2 , other problems remain open; for example, it is still not proven that the two bifurcating branches have i zeros, as is the case for Hammerstein operators with oscillation kernels [4]. The conjecture of Odeh and Tadjbakhsh that there are exactly 2(i+1) nontrivial solutions in the interval i 2 < i +1/2 remains un-answered, although it would be proven if one could show that there is no secondary bifurcation as in the cases of Kolodner [7] and Coffman [8].  相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical and numerical investigation of the natural convection boundary-layer along a vertical surface, which is embedded in a porous medium, when the surface heat flux varies as (1 +x 2)), where is a constant andx is the distance along the surface. It is shown that for > -1/2 the solution develops from a similarity solution which is valid for small values ofx to one which is valid for large values ofx. However, when -1/2 no similarity solutions exist for large values ofx and it is found that there are two cases to consider, namely < -1/2 and = -1/2. We consider infiltration into a soil that is assumed to have hydraulic conductivity of the form K = K = Kseh and water content of the form = K – r. Here h denotes capillary pressure head while Ks, , and r represent soil specific parameters. These assumptions linearize the flow equation and permit a closed form solution that displays the roles of all the parameters appearing in the hydraulic function K and . We assume Ks and r to be known. A measurement of diffusivity fixes the product of and resulting in a parameter identification problem for one parameter. We show that this parameter identification problem, in some cases, has a unique solution. We also show that, in some cases, this parameter identification problem can have multiple solutions, or no solution. In addition it is shown that solutions to the parameter identification problem can be very sensitive to small changes in the problem data.  相似文献

The influence of ultrasoundabsorbing coatings on stability of hypersonic boundary layers is considered. Two types of coatings were used in experiments: feltmetal with a random porous microstructure and a sheet perforated by blind cylindrical microchannels. The experiments were performed in a wind tunnel at a Mach number M = 5.95 on sharp cones with a 7° apex halfangle. Evolution of natural disturbances and artificially induced wave packets in the boundary layer was studied with the help of hotwire anemometry. Spatial characteristics of artificial disturbances were obtained. It is demonstrated that such coatings exert a stabilizing effect on secondmode disturbances.  相似文献

An optical technique was used to study the dispersion of 50 m, 90 m and 150 m droplets downstream of a source located in the center of a vertical pipe through which turbulent air is flowing. A turbulent dispersion coefficient, P, and a mean-square of the fluctuations in the turbulent velocity, v p 2 , are determined from the change of the measured mean-square displacement of the droplets over the pipe cross section with time. The interesting aspect of the experiments is that they explored conditions where the inertia of the particles is believed to be a much more important effect than that of the crossing of trajectories associated with the inequality of the average velocities of the particles and the fluid.  相似文献
