A theoretical model of a new integrated planar surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) refractive index sensor is presented and comprehensively investigated. The main principle of operation of this device is based on high efficiency energy transfer between a p-polarized guided mode propagating in a waveguide layer of the structure and the SPP propagating in the opposite direction in a metal layer separated from the waveguide layer by a dielectric buffer. The high efficiency energy transfer is realised by means of a properly designed Bragg grating imprinted in the waveguide layer. This device is compact, free from any moving parts and can easily be integrated into any planar scheme. Our simulations for the sensor operating at the well developed and commercialised telecom wavelengths are based on coupled mode theory.  相似文献

A wide, multimode segment of a dielectric optical waveguide, enclosed by Bragg reflectors and evanescently coupled to adjacent port waveguides, can constitute the cavity in an integrated optical microresonator. It turns out that the device can be described adequately in terms of an approximate coupled mode theory model which involves only a few guided modes as basis fields. By reasoning along the coupled mode model, we motivate a simple design strategy for the resonator device. Rigorous two dimensional mode expansion simulations are applied to verify the predictions of the approximate model. The results exemplify the specific spectral response of the standing wave resonators. As refinements we discuss the single resonance of a device with nonsymmetrically detuned Bragg reflectors, and the cascading of two Fabry–Perot cavities, where the coupling across an intermediate shorter grating region establishes a power transfer characteristic that is suitable for an add-drop filter.  相似文献

Guided-mode resonance in a diffraction band of multilayer dielectric gratings may lead to a catastrophic result in laser system, especially in the ultrashort pulse laser system, so the inhibition of guided-mode resonance is very important. In this paper the characteristics of guided-mode resonance in multilayer dielectric grating are studied with the aim of better understanding the physical process of guided-mode resonance and designing a broadband multilayer dielectric grating with no guided-mode resonance. By employing waveguide theory, all guided-wave modes appearing in multilayer dielectric grating are found, and the incident conditions, separately, corresponding to each guided-wave mode are also obtained. The electric field enhancement in multilayer dielectric grating is shown obviously. Furthermore, from the detailed analyses on the guided-mode resonance conditions, it is found that the reduction of grating period would effectively avoid the appearing of guided-mode resonance. And the expressions for calculating maximum periods, which ensure that no guided-mode resonance occurs in the requiring broad angle or wavelength range, are first reported. The above results calculated by waveguide theory and Fourier mode method are compared wit each other, and they are coincident completely. Moreover, the method that relies on waveguide theory is more helpful for understanding the guided-mode resonance excited process and analyzing how each parameter affects the characteristic of guided-mode resonance. Therefore, the effects of multilayer dielectric grating parameters, such as period, fill factor, thickness of grating layer, {\it et al.}, on the guided-mode resonance characteristic are discussed in detail based on waveguide theory, and some meaningful results are obtained.  相似文献

利用紫外固化材料SU-82005与热交联聚合物甲基丙烯酸甲酯一甲基丙烯酸缩水甘油酯[P(MMA—GMA)]分别作为波导芯层和包层材料,通过直接光刻技术,成功实现了厚度为5μm,宽度为9μm,光栅高度为4μm的起伏型高阶布拉格波导光栅滤波器。对光栅器件的谐振波长,光透射率等重要参数进行了模拟设计。测得制备的聚合物高阶布拉格波导光栅滤波器的谐振波长为1550.4nm,消光比为23dB,3-dB带宽为2nm。  相似文献

Red-emitting ridge waveguide lasers with integrated tenth order surface distributed Bragg reflector gratings were developed. The grating was implemented by the use of a BCl3-Ar-plasma, while the shape of the grating trench was controlled by additional He-backside cooling of the wafer. The devices exhibit longitudinal single mode operation up to 96 mW at 635.3 nm with a side mode suppression ratio of 18 dB and a good beam quality of M2<3. The spectrum is free of mode hops for a span of more than 55 pm.  相似文献

从平板波导的本征值方程出发,导出弱调制介质光栅共振位置的表达式,其预测结果与利用严格的耦合波理论所得值一致.对正入射时导模共振产生双反射峰现象进行解释,并就导模共振对入射角和光栅周期敏感性的成因进行了探讨.从薄膜的特征矩阵方程出发,在理论上分析了利用导模共振获得性能良好的反射滤光片的途径.  相似文献

This article presents a methodology for an integrated Bragg grating using an alloy of GaAs, AlGaAs, and InGaAs with a controllable refractive index to obtain an adaptive Bragg grating suitable for many applications on optical processing and adaptive control systems, such as limitation and filtering. The refractive index of a Bragg grating is controlled by using an external electric field for controlling periodic modulation of the refractive index of the active waveguide region. The designed Bragg grating has refractive indices programmed by using that external electric field. This article presents two approaches for designing the controllable refractive indices active region of a Bragg grating. The first approach is based on the modification of a planar micro-strip structure of the iGaAs traveling wave as the active region, and the second is based on the modification of self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots of an alloy from GaAs and InGaAs with a GaP traveling wave. The overall design and results are discussed through numerical simulation by using the finite-difference time-domain, plane wave expansion, and opto-wave simulation methods to confirm its operation and feasibility.  相似文献

A novel integrated optical chemical sensor based on a surface-relief Bragg grating in a waveguide with a curved input edge, and coated with a chemically sensitive polysiloxane cladding, is described. The curved edge provides a mechanism within the device fabrication that allows for alignment of the input beam to the grating to achieve Bragg scattering. As proof of principle, a low-parts-in-10(6) toluene-vapor sensor with a fast response time is demonstrated.  相似文献

A theoretical model of a novel planar integrated refractive index sensor based on surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) excitation with a corrugated metal long period grating (LPG) is presented and comprehensively investigated. The main principle of the operation this device is based on co-directional energy transfer by means of a corrugated metal LPG between a p-polarized guided mode propagating in a waveguide layer and the SPP propagating a metal layer separated from the waveguide layer by a buffer. The corrugated LPG is engraved in the metal layer in contact with the sensed medium. The power transmitted through the LPG in the guided mode serves as an input signal for an interrogation unit. This device is free from any moving parts and can be simply integrated into any planar waveguide system. Our sensor simulations are based on the local-normal-mode transfer matrix method and performed in telecom wavelength range.  相似文献

A novel network approach is proposed to analyze periodic dielectric waveguide of finite length. Our approximate analysis is to consider a bounded waveguide problem in which perfectly-conducting walls are introduced, and the periodic corrugation is regarded as consisting of step discontinuities connected by a length of uniform slab waveguide. Application of conservation of complex power technique (CCPT) allows us to take into account of both surface modes and only a few non-surface-modes, and readily derive propagation characteristics of the wave-guide with finite periodic corrugations around Bragg interaction region.  相似文献

The characteristics of a three-mode coupling in a passive dielectric waveguide are investigated for the case of even TE modes. The index is assumed to have a doubly periodic harmonic variation in the propagation direction. By a singular perturbation procedure using multiple space scales, the coupled-mode equations governing the Bragg interactions are systematically deduced. The three-mode coupling causes a stop band in frequency and the characteristics of the resulting evanescent mode are analyzed. For a periodic dielectric waveguide of finite length, the three coupled-mode equations are solved subject to suitable boundary conditions to obtain the reflection and the transmission coefficients. The frequency response of the reflection and the transmission coefficients are investigated and compared with the results of the pair of corresponding two-mode couplings. Representative numerical results are presented to illustrate the characteristics of the interaction of the three modes.  相似文献

We discuss the transmission characteristics of a microscale dielectric waveguide device with a deep groove and an embedded metallodielectric grating illuminated by a continuous wave of TM and TE modes at low terahertz frequency. To study its performance we solve numerically the corresponding Maxwell equations by means of finite difference time domain method with uniaxial perfectly match layer as its boundary condition. By varying the angle of incident, grating filling factor and refractive index of analyte in the deep groove, it is found that the device exhibits a significant transmission enhancement for the TM mode due to the existence of surface plasmon interaction. We also demonstrate its potential application as a biosensor device.  相似文献

采用DFB分布反馈结构的有机激光由于其自身优点备受关注,而利用高阶布拉格反馈的多光束有机激光及其原理鲜有报道。不同于以往的低阶布拉格反馈形成单波导或单光束激光,本文通过在平面有机半导体波导引入高阶布拉格反馈分别制备了红色和蓝色多束有机激光器。利用四阶布拉格反馈和PVK:DCJTI薄膜实现三光束红光激光器,出射角度为±53°和0.5°。利用五阶布拉格反馈和PS:DSA-ph薄膜实现四光束蓝光激光器,出射角度为±18°和±75°。融合平面波导与光栅耦合的机理,研究了高阶布拉格光栅反馈与器件特性之间的关系。结果表明,理论计算的光束耦合角度和实际测试相符,结果在一定程度上为多光束有机激光器件的设计提供了参考。  相似文献

We propose and numerically analyze a novel mode converter based on two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides with square arrays of cylindrical dielectric rods in air. The mode converter uses small perturbation defects to decouple various modes in the multimode waveguide, thereby permitting propagation of only one mode at any given frequency, which permits one-to-one mode conversion without exciting unwanted modes. The mode converter can efficiently convert a TM0 mode supported in a single-mode photonic crystal waveguide into a TM2 mode supported in the multimode waveguide that is laterally coupled to the single-mode waveguide section for a wide wavelength range. Influences of different sizes and positions of perturbation rods on the band structure of the multimode waveguide are studied.  相似文献

A thermally fixed photorefractive Bragg grating is written in a single-mode Ti:Fe:Er:LiNbO3 channel waveguide and used to develop a distributed feedback-distributed Bragg reflector coupled cavity laser with a second broadband dielectric cavity mirror. The optically pumped (lambda(p) = 1480 nm, P = 130 mW) laser emits in single-frequency operation as much as 8 mW at lambda = 1557.2 nm with a slope efficiency of approximately 22%. The laser wavelength can be thermo-optically and electro-optically tuned over 100 pm.  相似文献

The coupling between bound modes of a corrugated dielectric-slab waveguide and modes of the radiation continuum is analysed by a perturbation method. Loss coefficients that account for the power coupled into radiation modes by any Bragg order of corrugations with an arbitrary profile are determined for the bound modes. Agreement is found with published results for sinusoidal profiles. The proportion of power coupled out through each dielectric interface of the slab waveguide is also determined. When the corrugation has an asymmetric (blazed) profile and coupling to radiation modes is by the first Bragg order, more power can be coupled out through one interface than the other, even if the refractive indices of the cladding regions are equal. If the coupling is by a higher Bragg order, then the division of power can be considerably more unequal than for first-order coupling, with the greater proportion leaving the side of the waveguide opposite to that for first-order coupling. The ratio of the power coupled out the two sides varies cyclically with radiation wavelength.  相似文献

A cavity-resonator-integrated guided-mode resonance filter (CRIGF) has been proposed and investigated in order to realize high-efficiency narrowband reflection with a small aperture. The CRIGF consists of a grating coupler integrated in a cavity resonator constructed by a pair of distributed Bragg reflectors on a thin-film waveguide. This time, orthogonally crossed integration of two CRIGFs was demonstrated in order to obtain polarization-independent reflection spectrum. An SiO2-based device with 10?μm aperture was designed and fabricated for around 850?nm wavelength operation, and narrowband polarization-independent reflection was confirmed experimentally.  相似文献

An athermal metal-free planar waveguide concave grating demultiplexer is proposed. We designed the dielectric mirror at the grating facet instead of coating with the metal on the back wall of the grating facet. The transfer-matrix method is introduced to design the dielectric mirror and the reflectance spectral responses of the 2D waveguide structure are simulated using the FDTD software (RSoft, Inc.). To reduce the temperature sensitivity of the device, the three-focal-point method is introduced. We use the design example to show the high-reflectance bandwidth of the dielectric mirror. The fabrication errors are also taken into consideration. By using the numerical model of the scalar diffraction theory, the flat-top spectral responses of the channels are simulated.  相似文献
