2,7‐Bis(4‐t‐butylphenyl)‐9‐methylfluoren‐9‐yl acrylate ( BBPMFA ) was synthesized and polymerized using α,α′‐azobisisobutyronitrile or n‐Bu3B‐air as a radical initiator and using the complex of 9‐fluorenyllithium with (S)‐(+)‐1‐(2‐pyrrolidinylmethyl)pyrrolidine as an optically active anionic initiator. Although the radical polymerization led to rather low‐molecular‐weight products at low yields, the anionic polymerization afforded polymers with higher molecular weights in higher yields. The poly( BBPMFA ) obtained by the anionic polymerization was slightly rich in isotacticity (meso diad 57%) and showed an intense circular dichroism (CD) spectrum and large dextrorotation. The intensity of the CD spectrum and magnitude of optical activity increased with an increase in Mn, suggesting that the polymer possesses a preferred‐handed helical conformation. The CD spectrum disappeared within 1 s on irradiation to the polymer in a CHCl3 solution using a 500‐W Hg‐Xe lamp. This was ascribed to fast photolysis of the ester linkage leading to a loss of helical conformation of the entire chain. Photolysis products of poly( BBPMFA ) were poly(acrylic acid) and 2,7‐bis(4‐t‐butylphenyl)‐9‐methylenefluorene (2,7‐bis(4‐t‐butylphenyl)dibenzofulvene). The photolysis reaction seemed to proceed through the “unzipping” mechanism. The rate constant of photolysis of poly( BBPMFA ) under irradiation at monochromated 325 nm was around 0.01 s?1 independent of molecular weight. Photolysis at 325 nm was approximately 2400 times faster than that for chemical ester solvolysis under a neutral condition in the dark. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tuning the bandgap of electrochromic polymers is one of the important research topics in electrochromism. To understand clearly the effect of donor unit in donor–acceptor–donor‐type polymers, 2,3‐bis(4‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐5,8‐di(thiophen‐2‐yl)quinoxaline and 2,3‐bis(4‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐5‐(2,3‐dihydrothieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxin‐ 5‐yl)‐8‐(thiophen‐2‐yl)quinoxaline were synthesized and polymerized potentiodynamically. Their electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies were performed, and the results were compared with those of poly(2,3‐bis(4‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐5,8‐bis(2,3‐dihydrothieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxin‐5‐yl)quinoxaline) (Gunbas et al., Adv Mater 2008, 20, 691–695). A blue shift in the polymer π–π* transitions revealed that the bandgap of such polymers with the same acceptor unit is related to the electron density of donor units. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polymerization of a 2,7‐dibromocarbazole‐containing functional monomer, 6‐(2,7‐dibromo‐9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl)hexyl methacrylate (DBCzMA), was successfully carried out via the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) technology. The polymerization behavior possessed the feature of “living”/controlled radical polymerization, for example, the first‐order kinetics, the linear increase of the molecular weight of the polymer with the monomer conversion and relatively narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.27). The amphiphilic copolymers, poly(DBCzMAmb‐NIPAMn), with different chain length of poly(DBCzMA) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), were successfully prepared via RAFT chain‐extension reaction, using poly(DBCzMA) as the macromolecular chain transfer agent (macro‐CTA) and NIPAM as the second monomer. Modification of 2,7‐dibromide groups in amphiphilic copolymer poly(DBCzMA‐b‐NIPAM) via Suzuki coupling reaction employed 2,7‐bis(4′,4′,5′,5′‐tetramethyl‐1′,3′,2′‐dioxaborolan‐2′‐yl)‐N?9″‐heptadecanylcarbazole as the other reaction material to afford a poly(2,7‐carbazole)‐containing crosslinked materials. The stable and uniform core–shell fluorescent nanoparticles were successfully prepared in water. The formed fluorescent nanoparticles showed good thermoresponsive properties, which is confirmed by dynamic light scattering observation. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. We have developed a new intermediate monomer, 2,7‐[bis(4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl)‐9,9‐bis(3‐(tert‐butyl propanoate))]fluorene, that allows the easy synthesis of water‐soluble carboxylated polyfluorenes. As an example, poly[9,9′‐bis(3′′‐propanoate)fluoren‐2,7‐yl] sodium salt was synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction, and the properties of the polymer were studied in aqueous solutions of different pH. Fluorescence quenching of the polymer by different cationic quenchers (MV2+, MV4+, and NO2MV2+; MV=methyl viologen) was studied, and the quenching constants were found to be dependent on the charge and electron affinity of the quencher molecule and the pH of the medium. The largest quenching constant was observed to be 1.39×108 M ?1 for NO2MV2+ at pH 7. The change in polymer fluorescence upon interaction with different proteins was also studied. Strong fluorescence quenching of the polymer was observed in the presence of cytochrome c, whereas weak quenching was observed in the presence of myoglobin and bovine serum albumin. Lysozyme quenched the polymer emission at low protein concentrations, and the quenching became saturated at high protein concentrations. Under similar experimental conditions, the polymer showed improved quenching efficiencies toward cationic quenchers and a more selective response to proteins relative to other carboxylated conjugated polymers.  相似文献

Four new polymers containing a benzo[c]thiophene‐N‐dodecyl‐4,5‐dicarboxylic imide (DIITN) unit including the homopolymer and three donor–acceptor copolymers were designed, synthesized, and characterized. For these copolymers, DIITN unit with low bandgap was selected as an electron acceptor, whereas 5,5′‐(2,7‐bisthiophen‐2‐yl)‐9‐(2‐decyltetradecyl)‐9H‐carbazole), 5,5′‐(3,3′‐di‐n‐octylsilylene‐2,2′‐bithiophene), and 5,5′‐(2,7‐bisthiophen‐2‐yl‐9,9‐bisoctyl‐9H‐fluoren‐7‐yl) were chosen as the electron donor units to tune the highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO/LUMO) levels of the copolymers for better light harvesting. These polymers exhibit extended absorption in the visible and near‐infrared range and are soluble in common organic solvents. The relative low lying HOMO of these polymers promises good air stability and high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) for photovoltaic application. Bulk heterojunction solar cells were fabricated by blending the copolymers with [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester or [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM). The best power conversion efficiency of 1.6% was achieved under simulated sunlight AM 1.5G (100 mW/cm2) from solar cells containing 20 wt % of the fluorene copolymer poly[5,5′‐(2,7‐bisthiophen‐2‐yl‐9,9‐bisoctyl‐9H‐fluoren‐7‐yl)‐alt‐2,9‐(benzo[c]thiophene‐N‐dodecyl‐4,5‐dicarboxylic imide)] and 80 wt % of PC71BM with a high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.84 V. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The molecular materials with structures of luminescent core and peripheral carrier groups (e.g. carbazoles), have exhibited high‐performance in organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). Present work is to understand the basic process of electronic and energy exchange between the peripheral functional groups and the central core through quantum chemical analysis. As an example, 4,7‐bis(9,9‐bis(6‐(9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl)hexyl)‐9H‐fluoren‐2‐yl)benzo[c]‐[1,2,5]thiadiazole (TCBzC) is investigated in regards to optoelectronic properties using density functional theory (DFT). The results suggest that the forbidden transition from peripheral carbazole to the central chromophore core makes for separated electrical and optical properties, and high performance electroluminescence (EL) is mainly attributed to the energy‐transfer from carbazoles to the fluorene derivative core  相似文献

A series of poly[9‐(heptadecan‐9‐yl)‐9H‐carbazole‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐(5,6‐bis‐(octyloxy)‐4,7‐di(thiophen‐2‐yl)benzo‐[1,2,5]‐thia‐diazole)‐5,5‐diyl] compositions containing various ratios of 3,6‐carbazole was synthesized for testing in a polymer solar cell. An appropriate amount of 3,6‐carbazole units incorporated into the copolymer improved intermolecular charge transport, whereas excess amount of 3,6‐carbazole units temporarily seized on the partial negative charge generated in the conjugation breaks. We extensively studied the effects of the incorporated 3,6‐carbazole units on the intermolecular interactions, which can affect nongeminated recombination in bulk heterojunction‐polymer solar cells. These properties were investigated using photocurrent‐ and light intensity‐dependent measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A hole‐injection/transport bilayer structure on an indium tin oxide (ITO) layer was fabricated using two photocrosslinkable polymers with different molecular energy levels. Two photoreactive polymers were synthesized using 2,7‐(or 3,6‐)‐dibromo‐9‐(6‐((3‐methyloxetan‐3‐yl)methoxy)hexyl)‐9H‐carbazole) and 2,4‐dimethyl‐N,N‐bis(4‐ (4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl)phenyl)aniline via a Suzuki coupling reaction. When the oxetane groups were photopolymerized in the presence of a cationic photoinitiator, the photocured film showed good solvent resistance and compatibility with a poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) (PVK)‐based emitting layer. Without the use of a conventional hole injection layer (HIL) of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)/(polystyrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), the resulting green light‐emitting device bearing PVK: 5‐4‐tert‐butylphenyl‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole (PBD):Ir(Cz‐ppy)3 exhibited a maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.69%; this corresponds to a luminous efficiency of 29.57 cd/A for the device K‐4 configuration ITO/POx‐I/POx‐II/PVK:PBD:Ir(Cz‐ppy)3/triazole/Alq3/LiF/Al. These values are much higher than those of PLEDs using conventional PEDOT:PSS as a single HIL. The significant improvement in device efficiency is the result of suppression of the hole injection/transport properties through double‐layered photocrosslinked‐conjugated polymers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four novel poly(aryl ether)s ( P1 – P4 ) consisting of alternate isolated electron‐transporting (3,3″′‐bis‐trifluoromethyl‐p‐quaterphenyl for P1 , P3 or 3,3″′‐dicyano‐p‐quaterphenyl for P2 , P4 ) and hole‐transporting fluorophores [N‐(2‐ethylhexyl)‐3,6‐bis(styryl)carbazole for P1 , P2 or 9,9‐dihexyl‐2,7‐bis(styryl)fluorene for P3 , P4 ] were synthesized and characterized. These poly(aryl ether)s can be dissolved in organic solvents and exhibited good thermal stability with 5% weight‐loss temperature above 500 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. The photoluminescent (PL) spectra of the films of these polymers showed maximum peaks at around 442–452 nm. The PL spectral results revealed that the emission of polymers was dominated by the fluorophores with longer emissive wavelength via the energy transfer from p‐quaterphenyl to 3,6‐bis(styryl)carbazole or 2,7‐bis(styryl)fluorene segments. Therefore, the p‐quaterphenyl segments function only as the electron‐transporting/hole‐blocking units in these polymers, and the other segments are the emissive centers and hole‐transporting units. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels of these polymers were measured by cyclic voltammetry. The electron‐donating nitrogen atom on carbazole resulted in the higher HOMO energy levels of P1 and P2 than those of P3 and P4 . The single‐layer light‐emitting diodes (LED) of Al/poly(aryl ether)s ( P1 – P4 )/ITO glass were fabricated. P1 , P2 , and P4 revealed blue electroluminescence, but P3 emitted yellow light as a result of the excimer emission. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of soluble, conjugated, electrophosphorescent copolymers with (meso‐tetraphenylporphyrinato‐κ4N)platinum(II) (PtTPP) complexes incorporated into the polymer main chain were synthesized through the copolymerization of narrow‐band‐gap monomeric porphyrin–platinum(II) complexes and wide‐band‐gap dialkyl‐substituted fluorene monomers by a modified Suzuki coupling reaction. The study of the photoluminescence decay indicated that poly[2,7‐(9,9‐dioctylfluorene)‐co‐2,12‐((meso‐tetraphenylporphyrinato‐κ4N)platinum(II))] (PFO–PtTPP) was a triplet emitter. The electroluminescence emission from the fluorene segment was completely quenched for copolymers with PtTPP contents as low as 0.5 mol %. The PFO–PtTPP copolymers emitted deep red light. The device based on the porphyrin–platinum(II) copolymer PFO–5PtTPP (with 5 mol % PtTPP in the copolymer) showed the highest external quantum efficiency of 1.95% with an emission peak at 684 nm in an indium tin oxide/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)/polyvinylcarbazole (PVK)/70:30 (w/w) PFO–5PtTPP: 2‐(biphenyl‐4‐yl)‐5‐(4‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole/Ba/Al device configuration. In comparison with the PFO–PtTPP copolymers synthesized via a postpolymerization metalation route, copolymerization from Pt metal complexes proved to be a more efficient synthetic route for high‐efficiency electrophosphorescent polymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three donor–acceptor (D–A) 1,3‐di(thien‐2‐yl)thieno [3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione‐based copolymers, poly{9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐1,3‐bis(4‐hexylthien‐2‐yl)‐5‐octylthieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione}, poly{N‐(1‐octylnonyl)carbazole‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐1,3‐bis(4‐hexylthien‐2‐yl)‐5‐octylthieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione}, and poly {4,8‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxyl) benzo[1,2‐b:3,4‐b′]dithiophene‐alt‐1,3‐bis(4‐hexylthien‐2‐yl)‐5‐octylthieno[3,4‐c] pyrrole‐4,6‐dione} were synthesized by Suzuki or Stille coupling reaction. By changing the donor segment, the bandgaps and energy levels of these copolymers could be finely tuned. Cyclic voltammetric study shows that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of the three copolymers are deep‐lying, which implies that these copolymers have good stability in the air and the relatively low HOMO energy level assures a higher open‐circuit potential when they are used in photovoltaic cells. Bulk‐heterojunction photovoltaic cells were fabricated with these polymers as the donors and PC71BM as the acceptor. The cells based on the three copolymers exhibited power conversion efficiencies of 0.22, 0.74, and 3.11% with large open‐circuit potential of 1.01, 0.99, and 0.90 V under one sun of AM 1.5 solar simulator illumination (100 mW/cm2). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blue fluorescent materials with a 2‐(diphenylamino)fluoren‐7‐ylvinylarene emitting unit and tert‐butyl‐based blocking units were synthesized. The photophysical properties of these materials, including UV/Vis absorption, photoluminescent properties, and HOMO–LUMO energy levels, were characterized and rationalized with quantum‐mechanical DFT calculations. The electroluminescent properties of these molecules were examined through the fabrication of multilayer devices with a structure of indium–tin oxide, 4,4′‐bis{N‐[4‐(N,N‐di‐m‐tolylamino)phenyl]‐N‐phenylamino}biphenyl, 4′‐bis[N‐(1‐naphthyl)‐N‐phenylamino]biphenyl, and blue materials doped in 2‐methyl‐9,10‐di(2‐naphthyl)anthracene/tris(8‐quinolinolato)aluminum/LiF/Al. All devices exhibit highly efficient blue electroluminescence with high external quantum efficiency (3.20–7.72 % at 20 mA cm?2). A deep‐blue device with Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.15, 0.11) that uses 7‐[2‐(3′,5′‐di‐tert‐butylbiphenyl‐4‐yl)vinyl]‐9,9‐diethyl‐2‐N‐(3,5‐di‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐2,4‐difluorobenzenamino‐9H‐fluorene as a dopant in the emitting layer showed a luminous efficiency and external quantum efficiency of 3.95 cd A?1 and 4.23 % at 20 mA cm?2, respectively. Furthermore, a highly efficient sky‐blue device that uses the dopant 7‐{2‐[2‐(3,5‐di‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐9,9′‐spirobifluorene‐7‐yl]vinyl}‐9,9‐diethyl‐2‐N,N‐diphenylamino‐9H‐fluorene exhibited a luminous efficiency and high quantum efficiency of 10.3 cd A?1 and 7.7 % at 20 mA cm?2, respectively, with CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.20).  相似文献

A series of fluorene‐based copolymers composed of blue‐ and orange‐light‐emitting comonomers were synthesized through palladium‐catalyzed Suzuki coupling reactions. 9,9‐Dihexylfluorene and 2‐(2,6‐bis‐{2‐[1‐(9,9‐dihexyl‐9H‐fluoren‐2‐yl)‐1,2,3,4‐tetrahydroquinolin‐6‐yl]‐vinyl}‐pyran‐4‐ylidene)‐malononitrile (DCMF) were used as the blue‐ and orange‐light‐emitting chromophores, respectively. The resulting single polymers exhibited simultaneous blue (423/450 nm) and orange (580–600 nm) emissions from these two chromophores. By adjusting the fluorene and DCMF contents, white light emission could be obtained from a single polymer; a device with an ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al configuration was found to exhibit pure white electroluminescence with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.31), a maximum brightness of 1180 cd/m2, and a current efficiency of 0.60 cd/A. Furthermore, the white light emission of this device was found to be very stable with respect to variation of the driving voltage. The CIE coordinates of the device were (0.32, 0.29), (0.32, 0.29), and (0.33, 0.31) for driving voltages of 7, 8, and 10 V, respectively. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel series of thiazolothiazole (Tz)‐based copolymers, poly[9,9‐didecylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐2,5‐bis‐(3‐hexylthiophene‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (P1), poly[9,9‐dioctyldibenzosilole‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐2,5‐bis‐(3‐hexylthiophene‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (P2), and poly[4,4′‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)‐dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]silole‐alt‐2,5‐bis‐(3‐hexylthiophene‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (P3), were synthesized for the use as donor materials in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The field‐effect carrier mobilities and the optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers were investigated. The results suggest that the donor units in the copolymers significantly influenced the band gap, electronic energy levels, carrier mobilities, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers. The band gaps of the copolymers were in the range of 1.80–2.14 eV. Under optimized conditions, the Tz‐based polymers showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) for the PSCs in the range of 2.23–2.75% under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW/cm2). Among the three copolymers, P1, which contained a fluorene donor unit, showed a PCE of 2.75% with a short‐circuit current of 8.12 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage of 0.86 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.39, under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW/cm2). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new liquid crystalline (LC) acceptor monomer 2,5‐bis[4‐(4′‐cyanobiphenyloxy)dodecyl]‐3,6‐dithiophen‐2‐yl‐pyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐1,4‐dione (TDPPcbp) was synthesized by incorporating cyanobiphenyl mesogens into diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP). The monomer was copolymerized with bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′] dithiophene (BDT) and N‐9′‐heptadecanylcarbazole (CB) donors to obtain donor–acceptor alternating copolymers poly[4,8‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐alt‐3,6‐bis(thiophen‐5‐yl)‐2,5‐bis[4‐(4′‐cyanobiphenyloxy)dodecyl]‐2,5‐dihydropyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐1,4‐dione] (PBDTDPPcbp) and poly[N‐9′‐heptadecanyl‐2,7‐carbazole‐alt‐3,6‐bis(thiophen‐5‐yl)‐2,5‐bis[4‐(4′‐cyano‐biphenyloxy)dodecyl]‐2,5‐dihydropyrrolo[3, 4‐c]pyrrole‐1,4‐dione] (PCBTDPPcpb) with reduced band gap, respectively. The LC properties of the copolymers, the effects of main chain variation on molecular packing, optical properties, and energy levels were analyzed. Incorporating the mesogen cyanobiphenyl units not only help polymer donors to pack well through mesogen self‐organization but also push the fullerene acceptor to form optimized phase separation. The bulk heterojunction photovoltaicdevicesshow enhanced performance of 1.3% for PBDTDPPcbp and 1.2% for PCBTDPPcbp after thermal annealing. The results indicate that mesogen‐controlled self‐organization is an efficient approach to develop well‐defined morphology and to improve the device performance. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The purposeful modulation of the optoelectronic properties was realised on the basis of a series of the large, conjugated, phosphine oxide hosts 9,9‐bis‐{4′‐[2‐(diphenylphosphinoyl)phenoxy]biphenyl‐4‐yl}‐9H‐fluorene (DDPESPOF), 9,9‐bis‐{3′‐(diphenylphosphinoyl)‐4′‐[2‐(diphenylphosphinoyl)phenoxy]biphenyl‐4‐yl}‐9H‐fluorene (DDPEPOF), 9‐[4′‐(9‐{4′‐[2‐(diphenylphosphoryl)phenoxy]biphenyl‐4‐yl}‐9H‐fluoren‐9‐yl)biphenyl‐4‐yl]‐9H‐carbazole (DPESPOFPhCz) and 9‐[4′‐(9‐{3′‐(diphenylphosphoryl)‐4′‐[2‐(diphenylphosphoryl)phenoxy]biphenyl‐4‐yl}‐9H‐fluoren‐9‐yl)biphenyl‐4‐yl]‐9H‐carbazole (DPEPOFPhCz). The last two are quaternary with fluorenyls as linking bridges, diphenylphosphine oxide (DPPO) moieties as electron acceptors and diphenylethers and carbazolyls as two different kinds of electron donors. Owing to the fine‐organised molecular structures and the mixed indirect and multi‐insulating linkages, all of these hosts achieve the same first triplet energy levels (T1) of 2.86 eV for exothermic energy transfer to phosphorescent dopants. The first singlet energy levels (S1) and the carrier injection/transportation ability of the hosts were accurately modulated, so that DPESPOFPhCz and DPEPOFPhCz revealed extremely similar optoelectronic properties. However, the T1 state of the former is localised on fluorenyl, whereas the carbazolyl mainly contributes to the T1 state of the latter. A lower driving voltages and much higher efficiencies of the devices based on DPESPOFPhCz indicated that the chromophore‐localised T1 state can suppress the quenching effects through realising independent contributions from the different functional groups to the optoelectronic properties and the embedding and protecting effect on the T1 states by peripheral carrier transporting groups.  相似文献

A “zigzag” naphthodithiophene‐based copolymer, poly[4,9‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)naphtho[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐1,3‐(5‐heptadecan‐9‐yl)‐4H‐thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione] (P1) is synthesized and its properties are compared to “linear” naphthodithiophene‐based copolymer, poly[4,9‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)naphtho[2,3‐b:6,7‐d′]dithiophene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐1,3‐(5‐heptadecan‐9‐yl)‐4H‐thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione] (P2). The field‐effect carrier mobilities and the optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers are systematically investigated. The results suggest that the backbone of the copolymer structure significantly influences the band gap, electronic energy levels, carrier mobilities, and photovoltaic properties of the resultant thin films. In this work, the zigzag naphtho[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene‐based copolymer displays a good hole mobility and a high open‐circuit voltage; however, polymer solar cells in which the linear naphtho[2,3‐b;6,7‐d′]dithiophene‐based copolymer is used as the electron donor material perform better than the cells prepared using the zigzag naphtho[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene‐based copolymer. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new series of fluorene‐based polyquinoxalines with an ether linkage in the main chain were prepared by the polycondensation reaction between a tetraketone monomer and 3,3′,4,4′‐tetraaminodiphenyl ether. The polycondensation was usually carried out in m‐cresol. The resulting polymers ( P1 – P3 ) [ P1 = poly(quinoxaline‐co‐9,9‐dihexyl‐2,7‐dimethyl‐9H‐fluorene) P2 = poly(quioxaline‐co‐9,9‐dihexyl‐9‐pentyl‐2,7‐di‐p‐tolyl‐9H‐fluorene) P3 = poly(quioxaline‐co‐9,9‐bis‐(4‐methoxy‐phenyl)‐2,7‐dimethyl‐9H‐fluorene)] showed good solubility in common organic solvents and high thermal stability with only a 5% weight loss up to 440 °C. P1 and P2 had very high glass‐transition temperatures of 212 and 223 °C, respectively, whereas P3 did not show any phase‐transition temperature in repeated scans up to 300 °C. All the polymers in photoluminescence showed blue emissions in the range of 432–465 nm, both in chloroform solutions and in thin films. Light‐emitting diode devices of the configuration indium tin oxide/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)/polymer:poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) blend (2:8)/LiF/Al were fabricated with P1 or P2 and emitted blue light with electroluminescence peak wavelengths of 434 and 448 nm, respectively. The maximum brightness and the external quantum efficiency of P1 were 0.56 μW/cm2 at 29 V and 0.056%, whereas P2 showed 0.50 μW/cm2 at 34 V and a relatively low value of 0.015%, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry studies revealed that these polymers possessed low‐lying ionization potential energy levels ranging from ?5.49 to ?5.86 eV and low‐lying electron affinity energy levels ranging from ?2.65 to ?2.88 eV. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of a new A2X‐type difluoride monomer, N‐2‐pyridyl‐4′,4″‐bis‐(4‐fluorobenzenesulfonyl)‐o‐terphenyl‐3,6‐dimethyl‐4,5‐dicarboxylic imide ( 3 ), is described. The monomer 3 was incorporated into a series of copoly(aryl ether sulfone)s by polymerization of 4,4′‐isopropylidenediphenol and 4,4′‐difluorophenylsulfone. The incorporation of monomer 3 had an observable effect on both the glass‐transition temperature of poly(aryl ether sulfone)s and the tendency for macrocyclic oligomers to form during polymerization. Replacement of the pyridyl imide group via a transimidization reaction with propargyl amine proceeded quantitatively and without polymer degradation. The acetylene containing copoly(aryl ether sulfone) could be crosslinked by simple thermal treatment, resulting in an increase in the glass‐transition temperature and solvent resistance. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Newly designed 2H‐benzimidazole derivatives which have solubility groups at 2‐position have been synthesized and incorporated into two highly soluble carbazole based alternating copolymers, poly[2,7‐(9‐(1′‐octylnonyl)‐9H‐carbazole)‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di(thien‐2‐yl)‐2H‐benzimidazole‐2′‐spirocyclohexane)] (PCDTCHBI) and poly[2,7‐(9‐(1′‐octylnonyl)‐9H‐carbazole)‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di(thien‐2‐yl)‐2H‐benzimidazole‐2′‐spiro‐4′′‐((2′′′‐ethylhexyl)oxy)‐cyclohexane)] (PCDTEHOCHBI) for photovoltaic application. These alternating copolymers show low‐band gap properties caused by internal charge transfer from an electron‐rich unit to an electron‐deficient moiety. HOMO and LUMO levels are –5.53 and –3.86 eV for PCDTCHBI, and –5.49 and –3.84 eV for PCDTEHOCHBI, respectively. Optical band gaps of PCDTCHBI and PCDTEHOCHBI are 1.67 and 1.65 eV, respectively. The new carbazole based the 2H‐benzimidazole polymers show 0.11–0.13 eV lower values of band gaps as compared to that of carbazole based benzothiadiazole polymer, poly[N‐9′‐heptadecanyl‐2,7‐carbazole‐alt‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT), while keeping nearly the same deep HOMO levels. The power conversion efficiencies of PCDTCHBI and PCDTEHOCHBI blended with [6,6]phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) are 1.03 and 1.15%, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
