The general nonlinear equation of the third order in field strength for the lower-hybrid drift waves in inhomogeneous plasma is obtained on the basis of kinetic theory. This equation enables us to describe strong turbulence effects (modulational instability, soliton-like solutions, etc.) as well as weak turbulence effects (decays, scattering). The investigation of the modulational instability of the lower-hybrid drift waves is carried out. It is demonstrated that the development of the lower-hybrid drift wave modulational instability is possible only when the wavevector of the modulational perturbations is less or of the order of the wavevector of the pump wave. The condition on the wave vectors, when the nonlinear response defining the character of the modulational instability is determined by the inhomogeneity effects, is obtained.  相似文献

The character of the modulational instability of a Langmuir wave packet is usually assumed to be similar to that of the instability of a monochromatic pump Langmuir wave if the width of the packet is small when compared to the rate of the instability. This assumption has been confirmed only for the case corresponding to the “hydrodynamical” development of the modulational instability, i.e., for the case when the phase velocity of the modulational perturbations exceeds the ion thermal velocity. Here we consider the opposite case (when the phase velocity of the modulational perturbations is less than the ion thermal velocity) which corresponds to the “static” development of the instability. We demonstrate that the above assumption is valid for the situation considered.  相似文献

A new type of modulational instability for coherent as well as partially coherent light in systems with integrating nonlinearity caused by an irreversible process is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. In such systems plane waves never reach the stationary limit and exhibit a nontrivial time dependence resulting in new features of the modulational instability. For example, the modulational frequency of the nonexponentially increasing perturbation with maximum gain decreases while the wave is propagating. The threshold for vanishing modulational instability due to a finite degree of spatial coherence depends only on system parameters and not on the light intensity.  相似文献

An analytical study on the properties of intrinsic localized modes and modulational instability in a quantum two-dimensional ferromagnet with single-ion uniaxial anisotropy is completed in the semiclassical limit. By making use of the semidiscrete multiple-scale method, we obtain a line localized solution and a radially symmetric localized solution, and analyze their existence conditions. Taking into account that the existence of bright localized solutions is closely linked to the modulational instability of plane waves, we analytically study the discrete modulational instability of plane spin waves. The result of the modulational instability analysis show that the uniaxial anisotropy plays a key role in the appearance of our intrinsic localized spin wave modes.  相似文献

The modulational instability, quantum breathers and two-breathers in a frustrated easy-axis ferromagnetic zig-zag chain under an external magnetic field are investigated within the Hartree approximation. By means of a linear stability analysis, we analytically study the discrete modulational instability and analyze the effect of the frustration strength on the discrete modulational instability region. Using the results from the discrete modulational instability analysis, the presence conditions of those stationary bright type localized solutions are presented. On the other hand, we obtain the analytical expressions for the stationary bright localized solutions and analyze the effect of the frustration on their emergence conditions. By taking advantage of these bright type single-magnon bound wave functions obtained, quantum breather states in the present frustrated ferromagnetic zig-zag lattice are constructed. What is more, the analytical forms for quantum two-breather states are also obtained. In particular, the energy level formulas of quantum breathers and two-breathers are derived.  相似文献

By means of the multiple-scale expansion method, the coupled nonlinear Schr?dinger equations without an explicit external potential are obtained in two-dimensional geometry for a self-attractive Bose-Einstein condensate composed of different hyperfine states. The modulational instability of two-component condensate is investigated by using a simple technique. Based on the discussion about two typical cases, the explicit expression of the growth rate for a purely growing modulational instability and the optimum stable conditions are given and analysed analytically. The results show that the modulational instability of this two-dimensional system is quite different from that in a one-dimensional system.  相似文献

We study the one-dimensional modulational instability of broad optical beams in biased centrosymmetric photorefractive crystals under steady-state conditions. The one-dimensional modulational instability growth rates are obtained by globally and locally treating the space-charge field, which depend on the external bias field and the ratio of the intensity of optical beam to that of the dark irradiance. Our analysis indicates that the modulational instability growth rate in local effects can be determined from that in nonlocal effects.  相似文献

The effect of negative ions on the modulational instability properties of nonlinear dust acoustic (DA) waves in the electronegative dusty plasmas was investigated by considering Boltzmann-distributed electrons, negative ions, positive ions as well as positively charged dust grain under the ultraviolet irradiation. It is shown that the modulational instability properties of the DA waves were strongly affected by the temperature and proportion of negative ions. The modulational instability can occur only if the proportion of negative ions was smaller than critical value. The instability growth rate has a maximum value when the proportion of negative ions was a critical one in the unstable region. The effect of photoelectron generated by ultraviolet irradiation on the modulational instability of dust acoustic waves was also discussed by numerical method.  相似文献

By one-dimensional particle-in-cell(PIC) simulations, the propagation and stability of relativistic electromagnetic(EM) solitary waves as well as modulational instability of plane EM waves are studied in uniform cold electron-ion plasmas.The investigation not only confirms the solitary wave motion characteristics and modulational instability theory, but more importantly, gives the following findings. For a simulation with the plasma density 1023 m-3 and the dimensionless vector potential amplitude 0.18, it is found that the EM solitary wave can stably propagate when the carrier wave frequency is smaller than 3.83 times of the plasma frequency. While for the carrier wave frequency larger than that, it can excite a very weak Langmuir oscillation, which is an order of magnitude smaller than the transverse electron momentum and may in turn modulate the EM solitary wave and cause the modulational instability, so that the solitary wave begins to deform after a long enough distance propagation. The stable propagation distance before an obvious observation of instability increases(decreases) with the increase of the carrier wave frequency(vector potential amplitude). The study on the plane EM wave shows that a modulational instability may occur and its wavenumber is approximately equal to the modulational wavenumber by Langmuir oscillation and is independent of the carrier wave frequency and the vector potential amplitude.This reveals the role of the Langmuir oscillation excitation in the inducement of modulational instability and also proves the modulational instability of EM solitary wave.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental results are presented that illustrate efficient generation of new optical frequencies by means of induced modulational instability in birefringent fibers for an initially highly phase-mismatched process. Modulational instability is assisted by multiple four-wave mixing interactions. This technique relaxes the strict spectral limitations imposed by the phase-matching conditions on the signal used for frequency conversion by means of modulational instability.  相似文献

The modulational instability of two incoherently coupled beams in azobenzene-containing polymer with photoisomerization nonlinearity is investigated analytically and numerically. Our results show that as a precursor to spatial optical soliton formation, modulational instability can be adjusted and controlled by the wavelength combinations of the signal and background beams. We also discuss the dependences of strength of modulational instability on intensities of two signal beams and background beam. These findings make it possible to predict the formation of incoherently coupled soliton pairs in azobenzene-containing polymer.  相似文献

Thanks to a passive cavity configuration, modulational instability in fibers is successfully observed, for the first time to our knowledge, in the continuous-wave regime. Our technique provides a new means of generating all-optically ultrahigh-repetition-rate pulse trains and opens up new possibilities for the fundamental study of modulational instability and related phenomena.  相似文献

We numerically observe the effect of homogeneous magnetic field on the modulationally stable case of polar phase in F = 2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Also we investigate the modulational instability of uniaxial and biaxial (BN) states of polar phase. Our observations show that the magnetic field triggers the modulational instability and demonstrate that irrespective of the magnetic field effect the uniaxial and biaxial nematic phases show modulational instability.  相似文献
