Genetic algorithms have attracted a good deal of interest in the heuristic search community. Yet there are several different types of genetic algorithms with varying performance and search characteristics. In this article we look at three genetic algorithms: an elitist simple genetic algorithm, the CHC algorithm and Genitor. One problem in comparing algorithms is that most test problems in the genetic algorithm literature can be solved using simple local search methods. In this article, the three algorithms are compared using new test problems that are not readily solved using simple local search methods. We then compare a local search method to genetic algorithms for geometric matching and examine a hybrid algorithm that combines local and genetic search. The geometric matching problem matches a model (e.g., a line drawing) to a subset of lines contained in a field of line fragments. Local search is currently the best known method for solving general geometric matching problems.  相似文献

We present two results about heuristic solutions to the job shop scheduling problem (JSP). First, we show that the well-known analytical results on convergence of simulated annealing (SA) do not hold in the application to the JSP. We give a simple counterexample where the SA process converges against a suboptimal schedule. To overcome this problem at least heuristically, we present a new approach that uses a small population of SA runs in a genetic algorithm (GA) framework. The novel features are an adaptive temperature control that allows `reheating' of the SA and a new type of time-oriented crossover of schedules. Though the procedure uses only standard properties of the JSP it yields excellent results on the classical test examples.  相似文献

Project Scheduling with Multiple Modes: A Genetic Algorithm   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
In this paper we consider the resource-constrained project scheduling problem with multiple execution modes for each activity and makespan minimization as objective. We present a new genetic algorithm approach to solve this problem. The genetic encoding is based on a precedence feasible list of activities and a mode assignment. After defining the related crossover, mutation, and selection operators, we describe a local search extension which is employed to improve the schedules found by the basic genetic algorithm. Finally, we present the results of our thorough computational study. We determine the best among several different variants of our genetic algorithm and compare it to four other heuristics that have recently been proposed in the literature. The results that have been obtained using a standard set of instances show that the new genetic algorithm outperforms the other heuristic procedures with regard to a lower average deviation from the optimal makespan.  相似文献

This study investigates an optimization-based heuristic for the robotic cell problem. This problem arises in automated cells and is a complex flow shop problem with a single transportation robot and a blocking constraint. We propose an approximate decomposition algorithm. The proposed approach breaks the problem into two scheduling problems that are solved sequentially: a flow shop problem with additional constraints (blocking and transportation times) and a single machine problem with precedence constraints, time lags, and setup times. For each of these problems, we propose an exact branch-and-bound algorithm. Also, we describe a genetic algorithm that includes, as a mutation operator, a local search procedure. We report the results of a computational study that provides evidence that the proposed optimization-based approach delivers high-quality solutions and consistently outperforms the genetic algorithm. However, the genetic algorithm delivers reasonably good solutions while requiring significantly shorter CPU times.  相似文献

In this work a genetic algorithm is presented for the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem in which machine and job sequence dependent setup times are considered. The proposed genetic algorithm includes a fast local search and a local search enhanced crossover operator. Two versions of the algorithm are obtained after extensive calibrations using the Design of Experiments (DOE) approach. We review, evaluate and compare the proposed algorithm against the best methods known from the literature. We also develop a benchmark of small and large instances to carry out the computational experiments. After an exhaustive computational and statistical analysis we can conclude that the proposed method shows an excellent performance overcoming the rest of the evaluated methods in a comprehensive benchmark set of instances.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop new heuristic procedures for the maximum diversity problem (MDP). This NP-hard problem has a significant number of practical applications such as environmental balance, telecommunication services or genetic engineering. The proposed algorithm is based on the tabu search methodology and incorporates memory structures for both construction and improvement. Although proposed in seminal tabu search papers, memory-based constructions have often been implemented in naïve ways that disregard important elements of the fundamental tabu search proposals. We will compare our tabu search construction with a memory-less design and with previous algorithms recently developed for this problem. The constructive method can be coupled with a local search procedure or a short-term tabu search for improved outcomes. Extensive computational experiments with medium and large instances show that the proposed procedure outperforms the best heuristics reported in the literature within short computational times.  相似文献

In this paper, we describe an approach for solving the quadratic assignment problem (QAP) that is based on genetic algorithms (GA). It will be shown that a standard canonical GA (SGA), which involves genetic operators of selection, reproduction, crossover, and mutation, tends to fall short of the desired performance expected of a search algorithm. The performance deteriorates significantly as the size of the problem increases. To address this syndrome, it is common for GA-based techniques to be embedded with deterministic local search procedures. It is proposed that the local search should involve simple procedure of genome reordering that should not be too complex. More importantly, from a computational point of view, the local search should not carry with it the full cost of evaluating a chromosome after each move in the localized landscape. Results of simulation on several difficult QAP benchmarks showed the effectiveness of our approaches.  相似文献

Traditionally, the permutation flowshop scheduling problem (PFSP) was with the criterion of minimizing makespan. The permutation flowshop scheduling problem to minimize the total flowtime has attracted more attention from researchers in recent years. In this paper, a hybrid genetic local search algorithm is proposed to solve this problem with each of both criteria. The proposed algorithm hybridizes the genetic algorithm and a novel local search scheme that combines two local search methods: the Insertion Search (IS) and the Insertion Search with Cut-and-Repair (ISCR). It employs the genetic algorithm to do the global search and two local search methods to do the local search. Two local search methods play different roles in the search process. The Insertion Search is responsible for searching a small neighborhood while the Insertion Search with Cut-and-Repair is responsible for searching a large neighborhood. Furthermore, the orthogonal-array-based crossover operator is designed to enhance the GA’s capability of intensification. The experimental results show the advantage of combining the two local search methods. The performance of the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm is very competitive. For the PFSP with the total flowtime criterion, it improved 66 out of the 90 current best solutions reported in the literature in short-term search and it also improved all the 20 current best solutions reported in the literature in long-term search. For the PFSP with the makespan criterion, the proposed algorithm also outperforms the other three methods recently reported in the literature.  相似文献

This contribution is devoted to the application of iterated local search to image registration, a very complex, real-world problem in the field of image processing. To do so, we first re-define this parameter estimation problem as a combinatorial optimization problem, then analyze the use of image-specific information to guide the search in the form of an heuristic function, and finally propose its solution by iterated local search. Our algorithm is tested by comparing its performance to that of two different baseline algorithms: iterative closest point, a well-known, image registration technique, a hybrid algorithm including the latter technique within a simulated annealing approach, a multi-start local search procedure, that allows us to check the influence of the search scheme considered in the problem solving, and a real coded genetic algorithm. Four different problem instances are tackled in the experimental study, resulting from two images and two transformations applied on them. Three parameter settings are analyzed in our approach in order to check three heuristic information scenarios where the heuristic is not used at all, is partially used or almost completely guides the search process, as well as two different number of iterations in the algorithms outer-inner loops. The performance of the genetic algorithm (GA) for the graph partitioning problem (GPP) is investigated by comparison with standard heuristics on well-known benchmark graphs. In general, there is a case where a practical performance of a conventional genetic approach, which performs only simple operations without a local search strategy, is not sufficient. However, it is known that a combination of GA and local search can produce better solutions. From this practice, we incorporate a simple local search algorithm into the GA. In particular, the search ability of the GA is compared with standard heuristics such as multistart local search and simulated annealing, which use the same neighborhood structure of the simple local search, for solving the GPP. Experimental results show that the GA performs better than its competitors.  相似文献

Comparison of Algorithms for the Degree Constrained Minimum Spanning Tree   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The Degree Constrained Minimum Spanning Tree (DCMST) on a graph is the problem of generating a minimum spanning tree with constraints on the number of arcs that can be incident to vertices of the graph. In this paper we develop three heuristics for the DCMST, including simulated annealing, a genetic algorithm and a method based on problem space search. We propose alternative tree representations to facilitate the neighbourhood searches for the genetic algorithm. The tree representation that we use for the genetic algorithm can be generalised to other tree optimisation problems as well. We compare the computational performance of all of these approaches against the performance of an exact solution approach in the literature. In addition, we also develop a new exact solution approach based on the combinatorial structure of the problem. We test all of these approaches using standard problems taken from the literature and some new test problems that we generate.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the scheduling of jobs with incompatible families on parallel batching machines. The performance measure is total weighted tardiness. This research is motivated by a scheduling problem found in the diffusion and oxidation areas of semiconductor wafer fabrication where the machines can be modelled as parallel batch processors. Given that this scheduling problem is NP-hard, we suggest an ant colony optimization (ACO) and a variable neighbourhood search (VNS) approach. Both metaheuristics are hybridized with a decomposition heuristic and a local search scheme. We compare the performance of the two algorithms with that of a genetic algorithm (GA) based on extensive computational experiments. The VNS approach outperforms the ACO and GA approach with respect to time and solution quality.  相似文献

Metaheuristics for High School Timetabling   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
In this paper we present the results of an investigation of the possibilities offered by three well-known metaheuristic algorithms to solve the timetable problem, a multi-constrained, NP-hard, combinatorial optimization problem with real-world applications. First, we present our model of the problem, including the definition of a hierarchical structure for the objective function, and of the neighborhood search operators which we apply to matrices representing timetables. Then we report about the outcomes of the utilization of the implemented systems to the specific case of the generation of a school timetable. We compare the results obtained by simu lated annealing, tabu search and two versions, with and without local search, of the genetic algorithm. Our results show that GA with local search and tabu search based on temporary problem relaxations both outperform simulated annealing and handmade timetables.  相似文献

Most heuristics for the Steiner tree problem in the Euclidean plane perform a series of iterative improvements using the minimum spanning tree as an initial solution. We may therefore characterize them as local search heuristics. In this paper, we first give a survey of existing heuristic approaches from a local search perspective, by setting up solution spaces and neighbourhood structures. Secondly, we present a new general local search approach which is based on a list of full Steiner trees constructed in a preprocessing phase. This list defines a solution space on which three neighbourhood structures are proposed and evaluated. Computational results show that this new approach is very competitive from a cost–benefit point of view. Furthermore, it has the advantage of being easy to apply to the Steiner tree problem in other metric spaces and to obstacle avoiding variants.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce an adaptive evolutionary approach to solve the short-term electrical generation scheduling problem (STEGS). The STEGS is a hard constraint satisfaction optimization problem. The algorithm includes various strategies proposed in the literature to tackle hard problems with constraints such as: the representation used a non-binary coding scheme that drastically reduces the search space compared with the traditional evolutionary approaches. Specialized operators are especially designed for this problem and for this kind of representation, which also includes a local search procedure. Furthermore, the algorithm is guided by an adaptive parameter control strategy. We used some very well known benchmarks for STEGS to evaluate our approach. The results are very encouraging and we have obtained new better values for all the systems tested. Our aim here is to show that evolutionary approaches can be considered as good techniques to be used to solve real-world highly constrained problems.  相似文献

In this paper, both scatter search (SS) and genetic algorithms (GAs) are studied for the NP-Hard optimization variant of the satisfiability problem, namely MAX-SAT. First, we investigate a new selection strategy based on both fitness and diversity to choose individuals to participate in the reproduction phase of a genetic algorithm. The resulting algorithm is enhanced in two ways leading to two genetic algorithm variants: the first one uses a uniform crossover. The second one uses a specific crossover operator (to MAX-SAT). The crossover operator is combined with an improved stochastic local search (SLS). The crossover operator is used to identify promising regions while the stochastic local search performs an intensified search of solutions around these regions. Secondly, we propose a scatter search variant for MAX-SAT. Both the SS and the GAs implementations share the solution selection strategy, the improved SLS method and the combination operator. Experiments on several instances from MAX-SAT libraries are performed to show and compare the effectiveness of our approaches. The computational experiments show that both (SS) and (GAs) with a stochastic local search (SLS) improvement technique outperform a classical genetic algorithm (without SLS). The two metaheuristics are able of balancing search diversification and intensification which leads to good results. In general, the specific genetic algorithm with a (SLS) improvement technique and a specific combination method provides competitive results and finds solutions of a higher quality than a scatter search.  相似文献

The paper considers the hybrid flow-shop scheduling problem with multiprocessor tasks. Motivated by the computational complexity of the problem, we propose a memetic algorithm for this problem in the paper. We first describe the implementation details of a genetic algorithm, which is used in the memetic algorithm. We then propose a constraint programming based branch-and-bound algorithm to be employed as the local search engine of the memetic algorithm. Next, we present the new memetic algorithm. We lastly explain the computational experiments carried out to evaluate the performance of three algorithms (genetic algorithm, constraint programming based branch-and-bound algorithm, and memetic algorithm) in terms of both the quality of the solutions produced and the efficiency. These results demonstrate that the memetic algorithm produces better quality solutions and that it is very efficient.  相似文献

In this paper we present a chaos-based evolutionary algorithm (EA) for solving nonlinear programming problems named chaotic genetic algorithm (CGA). CGA integrates genetic algorithm (GA) and chaotic local search (CLS) strategy to accelerate the optimum seeking operation and to speed the convergence to the global solution. The integration of global search represented in genetic algorithm and CLS procedures should offer the advantages of both optimization methods while offsetting their disadvantages. By this way, it is intended to enhance the global convergence and to prevent to stick on a local solution. The inherent characteristics of chaos can enhance optimization algorithms by enabling it to escape from local solutions and increase the convergence to reach to the global solution. Twelve chaotic maps have been analyzed in the proposed approach. The simulation results using the set of CEC’2005 show that the application of chaotic mapping may be an effective strategy to improve the performances of EAs.  相似文献

In recent years, constraint propagation techniques have been shown to be highly effective for solving difficult scheduling problems. In this paper, we present an algorithm which combines constraint propagation with a problem decomposition approach in order to simplify the solution of the job shop scheduling problem. This is mainly guided by the observation that constraint propagation is more effective for small problem instances. Roughly speaking, the algorithm consists of deducing operation sequences that are likely to occur in an optimal solution of the job shop scheduling problem (JSP).The algorithm for which the name edge-guessing procedure has been chosen – since with respect to the job shop scheduling problem (JSP) the deduction of machine sequences is mainly equivalent to orienting edges in a disjunctive graph – can be applied in a preprocessing step, reducing the solution space, thus speeding up the overall solution process. In spite of the heuristic nature of edge-guessing, it still leads to near-optimal solutions. If combined with a heuristic algorithm, we will demonstrate that given the same amount of computation time, the additional application of edge-guessing leads to better solutions. This has been tested on a set of well-known JSP benchmark problem instances.  相似文献
