We describe a space of functions contained inxxLx (D)C(D G) but not necessarily inU. We give a representation of these functions as bounded multiplication operators on the Bergman spacexxLx a 2 and identify the subspace consisting of functions which induce compact multiplication operators. We also describe a newC *-subalgebra ofxxLx (D) which we conjecture to be a proper super-set ofU.Most of this research was done while the second author was visiting Cleveland State University. LetG be a graph, andk1 an integer. LetU be a subset ofV(G), and letF be a spanning subgraph ofG such that deg F (x)=k for allx V(G)–U. If deg F (x)k for allxU, thenF is called an upper semi-k-regular factor with defect setU, and if deg F (x)k for allxU, thenF is called a lower semi-k-regular factor with defect setU. Now letG=(X, Y;E(G)) be a bipartite graph with bipartition (X,Y) such that X=Yk+2. We prove the following two results.(1) Suppose that for each subsetU 1X such that U 1=max{k+1, X+1/2},G has an upper semi-k-regular factor with defect setU 1Y, and for each subsetU 2Y such that U 2=max{k+1, X+1/2},G has an upper semi-k-regular factor with defect setXU 2. ThenG has ak-factor.(2) Suppose that for each subsetU 1X such that U 1=X–1/k+1,G has a lower semi-k-regular factor with defect setU 1Y, and for each subsetU 2Y such that U 2=X–1/k+1,G has a lower semi-k-regular factor with defect setXU 2. ThenG has ak-factor.

Let (X,) be a P-harmonic Bauer space and let be a Borel measurable function on X×R satisfying conditions (A) through (D) of Section 2 (e.g., (x,t)=t|t|–1 where >1). For every Kato family M of potential kernels on X let M U(X) denote the set of all real continuous functions on X such that u+K M D (,u)(D) for every open relatively compact subset D of X. We study the existence of a non-trivial function in M U(X) which is dominated by a given positive harmonic function on X. If X is a domain of R d , is a positive Kato measure on X and L is a second-order differential operator in R d , we apply our study to derive a characterization of finite positive measures on the minimal Martin boundary M 1 X for which the boundary value problem Lu=(,u) in X and u= on M 1 X is solvable.

Critical star multigraphs
A star-multigraphG is a multigraph in which there is a vertexv + which is incident with each non-simple edge. It is critical if it is connected, Class 2 and(G\e) < (G) for eache E(G). We show that, ifG is any star multigraph, then(G) (G) + 1. We investigate the edge-chromatic class of star multigraphs with at most two vertices of maximum degree. We also obtain a number of results on critical star multigraphs. We shall make use of these results in later papers.

Let {n} n=0 be the eigenvalue sequence of a symmetric Hilbert-Schmidt operator onL 2(I). WhenI is an open interval, a necessary condition for {n} n=0 to be in the sequence space is obtained. WhenI is a closed bounded interval, sufficient conditions for {n} n=0 to be in the sequence space are obtained.

Summary For differential operatorsM of second order (as defined in (1.1)) we describe a method to prove Range-Domain implications—Muu and an algorithm to construct these functions , , , . This method has been especially developed for application to non-inverse-positive differential operators. For example, for non-negativea 2 and for given functions = we require =C 0[0, 1] C 2([0, 1]–T) whereT is some finite set), (M) (t)(t), (t[0, 1]–T) and certain additional conditions for eachtT. Such Range-Domain implications can be used to obtain a numerical error estimation for the solution of a boundary value problemMu=r; further, we use them to guarantee the existence of a solution of nonlinear boundary value problems between the bounds- and .

Sensitivity of a posterior quantity (f, P) to the choice of the sampling distribution f and prior P is considered. Sensitivity is measured by the range of (f, P) when f and P vary in nonparametric classes f and P respectively. Direct and iterative methods are described which obtain the range of (f, P) over f f when prior P is fixed, and also the overall range over f f and P P . When multiple i.i.d. observations X 1,...,X k are observed from f, the posterior quantity (f, P) is not a ratio-linear function of f. A method of steepest descent is proposed to obtain the range of (f, P). Several examples illustrate applications of these methods.

Under quite general assumptions, we prove existence, uniqueness and regularity of a solution U to the evolution equation U'(t) + (g F)(U(t)) 0, U(0)=u0, where g : X {} is a closed convex proper function, F : Y X is a continuously differentiable mapping whose Jacobian is locally Lipschitz continuous, X and Y being two Hilbert spaces. We also study the stability and the asymptotic behavior of U, and give various examples.

LetT be a continuous scalar-type spectral operator defined on a quasi-complete locally convex spaceX, that is,T=fdP whereP is an equicontinuous spectral measure inX andf is aP-integrable function. It is shown that (T) is precisely the closedP-essential range of the functionf or equivalently, that (T) is equal to the support of the (unique) equicontinuous spectral measureQ * defined on the Borel sets of the extended complex plane * such thatQ *({})=0 andT=zdQ *(z). This result is then used to prove a spectral mapping theorem; namely, thatg((T))=(g(T)) for anyQ *-integrable functiong: * * which is continuous on (T). This is an improvement on previous results of this type since it covers the case wheng((T))/{} is an unbounded set in a phenomenon which occurs often for continuous operatorsT defined in non-normable spacesX.

Let n be n-dimensional Euclidean space, and let : [0, L] n and : [0, L] n be closed rectifiable arcs in n of the same total length L which are parametrized via their arc length. is said to be a chord-stretched version of if for each 0s tL, |(t)–(s)| |(t)–(s)|. is said to be convex if is simple and if ([0, L]) is the frontier of some plane convex set. Individual work by Professors G. Choquet and G. T. Sallee demonstrated that if were simple then there existed a convex chord-stretched version of . This result led Professor Yang Lu to conjecture that if were convex and were a chord-stretched version of then and would be congruent, i.e. any chord-stretching map of a convex arc is an isometry. Professor Yang Lu has proved this conjecture in the case where and are C 2 curves. In this paper we prove the conjecture in general.

We study CR submanifolds M in a Hopf manifold (C H N (), J 0, g 0) with the Boothby metric g 0,of maximal CR dimension. Any such M is a CR manifold ofhypersurface type, although embedded in higher codimension, and itsanti-invariant distribution H(M) is spanned by a unit vectorfield U. We classify the CR submanifolds M for which = –J 0 Uis parallel in the normal bundle under assumptions on thespectrum of the Weingarten operator a . We show that (1) ifa (U) = (1/2)A (where A is the anti-Lee vector) andM fibres in tori over a CR submanifold of the complex projectivespace, then M lies on the (total space of the) pullback of the Hopf fibration via S C P N – 1, for some geodesic hypersphere S, and (2) if a (U)= 0 and Spec(a ) = {0, c}, for some c R {0}, then M is locally a Riemannian product of totally geodesicsubmanifolds.

LetG be a cyclicallyk-edge-connected cubic graph withk 3. Lete be an edge ofG. LetG be the cubic graph obtained fromG by deletinge and its end vertices. The edgee is said to bek-removable ifG is also cyclicallyk-edge-connected. Let us denote by S k (G) the graph induced by thek-removable edges and by N k (G) the graph induced by the non 3-removable edges ofG. In a previous paper [7], we have proved that N 3(G) is empty if and only ifG is cyclically 4-edge connected and that if N 3(G) is not empty then it is a forest containing at least three trees. Andersen, Fleischner and Jackson [1] and, independently, McCuaig [11] studied N 4(G). Here, we study the structure of N k (G) fork 5 and we give some constructions of graphs such thatN k (G) = E(G). We note that the main result of this paper (Theorem 5) has been announced independently by McCuaig [11].

Let X={X(t):tR} be a Lévy process and a non-decreasing, right continuous, bounded function with (–)=0 (((1+u 2)/u 2)d(u) is the Lévy measure). In this paper we define the Donsker delta function (X(t)–a), t>0 and aR, as a generalized Lévy functional under the condition that (0)–(0–)>0. This leads us to define F(X(t)) for any tempered distribution F, and as an application, we derive an Itô formula for F(X(t)) when has jumps at 0 and 1.

Let be a Guelfand measure (cf. [A, B]) on a locally compact groupG DenoteL 1 (G)=*L 1(G)* the commutative Banach algebra associated to . We show thatL 1 (G) is semi-simple and give a characterization of the closed ideals ofL 1 (G). Using the -spherical Fourier transform, we characterize all linear bounded operators inL 1 (G) which are invariants by -translations (i.e. such that 1(( x f) )=( x ((f)) for eachxG andfL 1 (G); where x f(y)=f(xy); x,y G). WhenG is compact, we study the algebraL 1 (G) and obtain results analogous to ones obtained for the commutative case: we show thatL 1 (G) is regular, all closed sets of its Guelfand spectrum are sets of synthesis and establish theorems of harmonic synthesis for functions inL p (G) (p=1,2 or +).

Suppose that U is the resolvent of a Borel right process on a Lusin space X. If is a U-excessive measure on X then we show by analytical methods that for every U-excessive measure with the Radon–Nikodym derivative d/d possesses a finely continuous version. (Fitzsimmons and Fitzsimmons and Getoor gave a probabilistic approach for this result.) We extend essentially a technique initiated by Mokobodzki and deepened by Feyel. The result allows us to establish a Revuz type formula involving the fine versions, and to study the Revuz correspondence between the -finite measures charging no set that is both -polar and -negligible (U being the potential component of ) and the strongly supermedian kernels on X. This is an analytic version of a result of Azéma, Fitzsimmons and Dellacherie, Maisonneuve and Meyer, in terms of additive functionals or homogeneous random measures. Finally we give an application to the context of the semi-Dirichlet forms, covering a recent result of Fitzsimmons.

We shall consider positive definite quadratic formsQ inr2 variables of the almost diagonal shape where 2, and for 1j,Q j is a positive definite quadratic form with integral coefficients inr j variables, j is a positive real number,r j1 andr 1+...+r =r Letb 1,...,b r be a system of real numbers with 0b j<1. For x>0 letA(x) be the number of lattice points in the ellipsoidQ(u+b)x, letV(x) be the volume of this ellipsoid and letP(x)=A(x)-V(x). Our purpose is to find the exact order ofP(x); i. e., the numberf for which for each >0P(x)=O(xf+) andP(x)=(x f–).
