A unital -algebra is said to have the (APD)-property if every nonzero element in has the approximate polar decomposition. Let be a closed ideal of . Suppose that and have (APD). In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that makes have (APD). Furthermore, we show that if and or is a simple purely infinite -algebra, then has (APD).

The Pontrjagin-Thom construction expresses a relation between the oriented bordism groups of framed immersions , and the stable homotopy groups of spheres. We apply the Pontrjagin-Thom construction to the oriented bordism groups of mappings n$">, with mildest singularities. Recently, O. Saeki showed that for , the group is isomorphic to the group of smooth structures on the sphere of dimension . Generalizing, we prove that is isomorphic to the -th stable homotopy group , , where is the group of oriented auto-diffeomorphisms of the sphere and is the group of rotations of .

For a flat module we prove that is a functor from the category of linearly compact modules to itself and is exact. Moreover, is representable when is linearly compact and representable. This gives an affirmative answer to a question of L. Melkersson (1995) for linearly compact modules without the condition of finite Goldie dimension. The set of attached prime ideals of the co-localization of a linearly compact representable module with respect to a multiplicative set in is described.

Let be a connected hereditary abelian category over an algebraically closed field , with finite dimensional homomorphism and extension spaces. There are two main known types of such categories: those derived equivalent to for some finite dimensional hereditary -algebra and those derived equivalent to some category of coherent sheaves on a weighted projective line in the sense of Geigle and Lenzing (1987). The aim of this paper is to give a characterization of the second class in terms of some properties known to hold for these hereditary categories.

Let be an algebraic number field and be the ring of integers of . Let be a finite group and be a finitely generated torsion free -module. We say that is a globally irreducible -module if, for every maximal ideal of , the -module is irreducible, where stands for the residue field .

Answering a question of Pham Huu Tiep, we prove that the symmetric group does not have non-trivial globally irreducible modules. More precisely we establish that if is a globally irreducible -module, then is an -module of rank with the trivial or sign action of .

Let be the polynomial ring in variables over a field and its graded maximal ideal. Let be homogeneous polynomials of degree generating an -primary ideal, and let be arbitrary homogeneous polynomials of degree . In the present paper it will be proved that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the standard graded -algebra is at most . By virtue of this result, it follows that the regularity of a simplicial semigroup ring with isolated singularity is at most , where is the multiplicity of and is the codimension of .

We show that a sequence in the unit ball of is sampling for the Hardy spaces , , if and only if the admissible accumulation set of in the unit sphere has full measure. For the situation is quite different. While this condition is still sufficient, when (in contrast to the one dimensional situation) there exist sampling sequences for whose admissible accumulation set has measure 0. We also consider the sequence obtained by applying to each a random rotation, and give a necessary and sufficient condition on so that, with probability one, is of sampling for , .

Let be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring . For finitely generated -modules and with , it is shown that . Let be a finitely generated module over a local ring such that . Using the above result and the notion of connectedness dimension, it is proved that Here denotes the connectedness dimension of the topological space . Finally, as a consequence of this inequality, two previously known generalizations of Faltings' connectedness theorem are improved.

We prove results of the following type.i) If is irregular and , then the normal bundle is indecomposable. ii) If is irregular, and , then is not the direct sum of two vector bundles of rank . iii) If , and is decomposable, then the natural restriction map is an isomorphism (and, in particular, if is embedded Segre in , then is indecomposable). iv) Let and , and assume that is a direct sum of line bundles; if assume furthermore that is simply connected and is not divisible in . Then is a complete intersection. These results follow from Theorem 2.1 below together with Le Potier's vanishing theorem. The last statement also uses a criterion of Faltings for complete intersection. In the case when this fact was proved by M. Schneider in 1990 in a completely different way.

In this paper we prove that for any associative ring , and for any left -module with finite projective dimension, the Gorenstein injective dimension equals the usual injective dimension . In particular, if is finite, then also is finite, and thus is Gorenstein (provided that is commutative and Noetherian).

Given a Banach algebra , R. Larsen defined, in his book ``An introduction to the theory of multipliers", a Banach algebra by means of a multiplier on , and essentially used it in the case of a commutative semisimple Banach algebra to prove a result on multiplications which preserve regular maximal ideals. Here, we consider the analogue Banach algebra induced by a bounded double centralizer of a Banach algebra . Then, our main concern is devoted to the relationships between , , and the algebras of bounded double centralizers and of and , respectively. By removing the assumption of semisimplicity, we generalize some results proven by Larsen.
