We prove that the coefficients of the so-called right 2-characteristic polynomial of a supermatrix over a Grassmann algebraG=G 0G 1 are in the even componentG 0 ofG. As a consequence, we obtain that the algebra ofn×n supermatrices is integral of degreen 2 overG 0. Partially supported by OTKA of Hungary, grant no. T16432.  相似文献

Summary Let G be the group generated by L free involutions, whose Cayley graph T is the infinite homogeneous tree with L edges at every node. A general central limit theorem and law of the iterated logarithm is proven for left-invariant random walks Z n on G or T which applies to the distance of Z n from a fixed point, as well as to the distribution of the last R letters in Z n . For nearest neighbor random walks, we also derive a generating function identity that yields formulas for the asymptotic mean and variance of the distance from a fixed point. A generalization for Z n with a finitely supported step distribution is derived and discussed.Partially supported by grant NSF MCS85-04315  相似文献

Let X be a proper hyperbolic geodesic metric space and let G be a closed subgroup of the isometry group Iso(X) of X. We show that if G is not elementary then for every p ∈ (1, ∞) the second continuous bounded cohomology group H2cb(G, Lp(G)) does not vanish. As an application, we derive some structure results for closed subgroups of Iso(X). Partially supported by Sonderforschungsbereich 611.  相似文献

We introduce and study the notion of essential dimension for linear algebraic groups defined over an algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero. The essential dimension is a numerical invariant of the group; it is often equal to the minimal number of independent parameters required to describe all algebraic objects of a certain type. For example, if our groupG isS n , these objects are field extensions; ifG=O n , they are quadratic forms; ifG=PGL n , they are division algebras (all of degreen); ifG=G 2, they are octonion algebras; ifG=F 4, they are exceptional Jordan algebras. We develop a general theory, then compute or estimate the essential dimension for a number of specific groups, including all of the above-mentioned examples. In the last section we give an exposition of results, communicated to us by J.-P. Serre, relating essential dimension to Galois cohomology.Partially supported by NSA grant MDA904-9610022 and NSF grant DMS-9801675  相似文献

We investigate properties of subspaces of L2 spanned by subsets of a finite orthonormal system bounded in the L norm. We first prove that there exists an arbitrarily large subset of this orthonormal system on which the L1 and the L2 norms are close, up to a logarithmic factor. Considering for example the Walsh system, we deduce the existence of two orthogonal subspaces of L2n, complementary to each other and each of dimension roughly n/2, spanned by ± 1 vectors (i.e. Kashin’s splitting) and in logarithmic distance to the Euclidean space. The same method applies for p > 2, and, in connection with the Λp problem (solved by Bourgain), we study large subsets of this orthonormal system on which the L2 and the Lp norms are close (again, up to a logarithmic factor). The optimal degree of approximation of the method of Gammaoperators G n in L p spaces is O(n -1). In order to obtain much faster convergence, quasi-interpolants G n (k) of G n in the sense of Sablonnière are considered. We show that for fixed k the operator-norms G n (k) p are uniformly bounded in n. In addition to this, for the first time in the theory of quasi-interpolants, all central problems for approximation methods (direct theorem, inverse theorem, equivalence theorem) could be solved completely for the L p metric. Left Gamma quasi-interpolants turn out to be as powerful as linear combinations of Gammaoperators [6].  相似文献

In this paper we classify the p-local finite groups over p1+2+, the extraspecial group of order p3 and exponent p for odd p. This study reduces to the classification of the saturated fusion systems over p1+2+, which will be characterized by the outer automorphism group, the number of -radical subgroups and the automorphism group of each nontrivial -radical subgroup. As part of this classification, we obtain three new exotic 7-local finite groups.Partially supported by MCYT grant BFM2001-2035.Partially supported by MCYT grant BFM2001-1825.Both authors have been supported by the EU grant nr HPRN-CT-1999-00119.in final form: 1 October 2003  相似文献

We obtain optimal bounds of order O(n −1) for the rate of convergence to the semicircle law and to the Marchenko-Pastur law for the expected spectral distribution functions of random matrices from the GUE and LUE, respectively. LetC g be a general curve of genusg≥4. Guralnick and others proved that the monodromy group of a coverC g →ℙ1 of degreen is eitherS n orA n . We show thatA n occurs forn≥2g+1. LetL/K be a finite Galoisp-extension of algebraic function fields of one variable over an algebraically closed fieldk of characteristicp, with Galois groupG=Gal(L/K). The space Ώ L s (0) of semisimple holomorphic differentials ofL is thek-vector space of holomorphic differentials which are fixed by the Cartier operator. We obtain the isomorphism classes and multiplicities of the summands in a Krull-Schmidt decomposition of thek[G]-module Ώ L s (0) into a direct sum of indecomposablek[G]-modules. Lascar described E KP as a composition of E L and the topological closure of E L (Casanovas et al. in J Math Log 1(2):305–319). We generalize this result to some other pairs of equivalence relations. Motivated by an attempt to construct a new example of a non-G-compact theory, we consider the following example. Assume G is a group definable in a structure M. We define a structure M′ consisting of M and X as two sorts, where X is an affine copy of G and in M′ we have the structure of M and the action of G on X. We prove that the Lascar group of M′ is a semi-direct product of the Lascar group of M and G/G L . We discuss the relationship between G-compactness of M and M′. This example may yield new examples of non-G-compact theories. The first author is supported by the Polish Goverment grant N N201 384134. On Hua-Tuan’s conjecture   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Let G be a finite group and |G| = pn, p be a prime. For 0 m n, sm(G) denotes the number of subgroups of of order pm of G. Loo-Keng Hua and Hsio-Fu Tuan have ever conjectured: for an arbitrary finite p-group G, if p > 2, then sm(G) ≡ 1, 1 + p, 1 + p + p2 or 1 + p + 2p2 (mod p3). In this paper, we investigate the conjecture, and give some p-groups in which the conjecture holds and some examples in which the conjecture does not hold.  相似文献

LetT: X→X be a deterministic dynamical system preserving a probability measure μ. A dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemma asserts that for certain sequences of subsetsA n ⊃ X and μ-almost every pointx∈X the inclusionT n x∈A n holds for infinitely manyn. We discuss here systems which are either symbolic (topological) Markov chain or Anosov diffeomorphisms preserving Gibbs measures. We find sufficient conditions on sequences of cylinders and rectangles, respectively, that ensure the dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemma. Partially supported by NSF grant DMS-9732728. Letp be a fixed prime and letG be a finite simple group. It is shown that two randomly chosen elements ofG of orders prime top generateG with probability tending to 1 as |G| → ∞. This answers a question of Kantor. Some related results are also established. In this paper it is proved that ifp is a prime dividing the order of a groupG with (|G|,p − 1) = 1 andP a Sylowp-subgroup ofG, thenG isp-nilpotent if every subgroup ofPG N of orderp is permutable inN G (P) and whenp = 2 either every cyclic subgroup ofPG N of order 4 is permutable inN G (P) orP is quaternion-free. Some applications of this result are given. The research of the first author is supported by a grant of Shanxi University and a research grant of Shanxi Province, PR China. Let Z be a boundedness control space and p: X Z be a continuous map. The boundedly controlled Whitehead group Wh bc (X, p) is defined to be a quotient of the boundedly controlled K 1-group K 1 bc (X, p) by a certain subgroup whose generators are explicitly given. In general, little is known about this subgroup and it is even possible that it vanishes; i.e. that the boundedly controlled K 1 and Whitehead groups are identical. This paper examines the structure of this subgroup in the case when p is the open cone on a PL map between compact polyhedra. As a byproduct, it calculates Wh bc (X, p) in some of these cases.Partially supported by the NSF under grant number DMS-8803149.  相似文献

A parity walk in an edge-coloring of a graph is a walk along which each color is used an even number of times. Let p(G) be the least number of colors in an edge-coloring of G having no parity path (a parity edge-coloring). Let (G) be the least number of colors in an edge-coloring of G having no open parity walk (a strong parity edge-coloring). Always (G) ≥ p(G) ≥ χ′(G). We prove that (K n ) = 2⌈lgn − 1 for all n. The optimal strong parity edge-coloring of K n is unique when n is a power of 2, and the optimal colorings are completely described for all n. Partially supported by NSF grant CCR 0093348. Let G be a p[[t]]-standard group of level 1. Then G is p[[t]]-perfect if its lower central series is given by powers of the maximal ideal (p, t), i.e. if n(G) = G((p,t)n). We prove that a p[[t]]-perfect group is linear by imitating the proof that a p[[t]]-standard group is linear.  相似文献
