Periodic wave trains are the generic one-dimensional solution form for reaction-diffusion equations with a limit cycle in the kinetics. Such systems are widely used as models for oscillatory phenomena in chemistry, ecology, and cell biology. In this paper, we study the way in which periodic wave solutions of such systems are modified by periodic forcing of kinetic parameters. Such forcing will occur in many ecological applications due to seasonal variations. We study temporal forcing in detail for systems of two reaction diffusion equations close to a supercritical Hopf bifurcation in the kinetics, with equal diffusion coefficients. In this case, the kinetics can be approximated by the Hopf normal form, giving reaction-diffusion equations of λ-ω type. Numerical simulations show that a temporal variation in the kinetic parameters causes the wave train amplitude to oscillate in time, whereas in the absence of any temporal forcing, this wave train amplitude is constant. Exploiting the mathematical simplicity of the λ-ω form, we derive analytically an approximation to the amplitude of the wave train oscillations with small forcing. We show that the amplitude of these oscillations depends crucially on the period of forcing.  相似文献

Extending the results of our previous study [2], we now investigate the propagation of interior shocks corresponding to the signaling problem of small-amplitude, high-frequency type. We derive a formula for the shock front and show that the previously constructed asymptotic solution is valid on both sides of this front. This solution is further distinguished to a higher order in which the effects of material inhomogeneity are accounted for. Moreover, if λ = λ( u , x) represents the eigenvalue under consideration, we show that the single-wave-mode boundary disturbance of [2] can lead only to a λ-shock. We also derive an entropy condition for the shock wave. As an application of our theory, the fluid-filled hyperelastic tube problem of [7] is further examined and an example calculation made in which we show that a compressive shock wave is generated at the shock-initiation point. This demonstration is effected as a particular example of the solution to a general bifurcation problem.  相似文献

In this paper, the inversion of coefficients Lame's parameters λ, μ and dissipative factor ϒ in one order dissipative elastic wave equation in the vector form is discussed. Under some smoothness conditions, we have proved the existence, uniqueness and extension theorems of the local solution to the inverse problem by means of an equivalent integral system. Stability, well-posed property of the solution and the property of the solution at the end point of the largest existence interval are also researched.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a class of nonlinear second-order singular Neumann boundary value problem with parameters in the boundary conditions. By the fixed point index, spectral theory of the linear operators, and lower and upper solutions method, we prove that there exists a constant λ* > 0 such that for λ∈ (0, λ * ), NBVP has at least two positive solutions; for λ = λ* , NBVP has at least one positive solution; for λ > λ* , NBVP has no solution.  相似文献

We consider an initial value problem for the KdV equation in the limit of weak dispersion. This model describes the formation and evolution in time of a nondissipative shock wave in plasma. Using the perturbation theory in power series of a small dispersion parameter, we arrive at the Riemann simple wave equation. Once the simple wave is overturned, we arrive at the system of Whitham modulation equations that describes the evolution of the resulting nondissipative shock wave. The idea of the approach developed in this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of the exact solution in the limit of weak dispersion, using the solution given by the inverse scattering problem technique. In the study of the problem, we use the WKB approach to the direct scattering problem and use the formulas for the exact multisoliton solution of the inverse scattering problem. We discuss a structure-preserving algorithm for the accurate solution of generalized eigenvalue problems for skew-Hamiltonian/Hamiltonian matrix pencils λN − ℋ. By embedding the matrix pencil λ𝒩 − ℋ into a skew-Hamiltonian/Hamiltonian matrix pencil of double size it is possible to avoid the problem of non-existence of a structured Schur form. For these embedded matrix pencils we can compute a particular condensed form to accurately compute the simple, finite, purely imaginary eigenvalues of λ𝒩 − ℋ. In this paper we describe a new method to compute also the corresponding eigenvectors by using the information contained in the condensed form of the embedded matrix pencils and associated transformation matrices. We consider a nonlinear Neumann logistic equation driven by the p-Laplacian with a general Carathéodory superdiffusive reaction. We are looking for positive solutions of such problems. Using minimax methods from critical point theory together with suitable truncation techniques, we show that the equation exhibits a bifurcation phenomenon with respect to the parameter λ > 0. Namely, we show that there is a λ* > 0 such that for λ < λ*, the problem has no positive solution; for λ = λ*, it has at least one positive solution; and for λ > λ*, it has at least two positive solutions.  相似文献

We consider the scattering of an electromagnetic time‐harmonic plane wave by an infinite cylinder having a mixed open crack (or arc) in R2 as the cross section. The crack is made up of two parts, and one of the two parts is (possibly) coated by a material with surface impedance λ. We transform the scattering problem into a system of boundary integral equations by adopting a potential approach, and establish the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution to the system by the Fredholm theory. We solve here some problems from Fuchs’ book. We show that the answer to Whitehead’s problem (for groups of power ?1) is independent from the usual axioms of set theory. In this work, we analyze the parameter‐to‐solution map of the acoustic wave equation with respect to its parameters wave speed and mass density. This map is a mathematical model for the seismic inverse problem where one wants to recover the parameters from measurements of the acoustic potential. We show its complete continuity and Fréchet differentiability. To this end, we provide necessary existence, stability, and regularity results. We consider the impedance boundary-value problem for the Helmholtz equation originated by the problem of wave diffraction by an infinite strip with imperfect conductivity. The two possible different situations of real and complex wave numbers are considered. Bessel potential spaces are used to deal with the problem, and the identification of corresponding operators of single and double layer potentials allow a reformulation of the problem into a system of integral equations. The well-posedness of the problem is obtained for a set of impedance parameters (and wave numbers), after the incorporation of some compatibility conditions on the data. At the end, an improvement of the regularity of the solution is derived for the same set of parameters previously considered.  相似文献

We consider local Markov chain Monte–Carlo algorithms for sampling from the weighted distribution of independent sets with activity λ, where the weight of an independent set I is λ|I|. A recent result has established that Gibbs sampling is rapidly mixing in sampling the distribution for graphs of maximum degree d and λ < λ c (d), where λ c (d) is the critical activity for uniqueness of the Gibbs measure (i.e., for decay of correlations with distance in the weighted distribution over independent sets) on the d-regular infinite tree. We show that for d ≥ 3, λ just above λ c (d) with high probability over d-regular bipartite graphs, any local Markov chain Monte–Carlo algorithm takes exponential time before getting close to the stationary distribution. Our results provide a rigorous justification for “replica” method heuristics. These heuristics were invented in theoretical physics and are used in order to derive predictions on Gibbs measures on random graphs in terms of Gibbs measures on trees. A major theoretical challenge in recent years is to provide rigorous proofs for the correctness of such predictions. Our results establish such rigorous proofs for the case of hard-core model on bipartite graphs. We conjecture that λ c is in fact the exact threshold for this computational problem, i.e., that for λ > λ c it is NP-hard to approximate the above weighted sum over independent sets to within a factor polynomial in the size of the graph.  相似文献

We consider a vector problem of diffraction of an electromagnetic wave on a partially screened anisotropic inhomogeneous dielectric body. The boundary conditions and the matching conditions are posed on the boundary of the inhomogeneity domain, and under passage through it, the medium parameters have jump changes. A boundary value problem for the system of Maxwell equations in unbounded space is studied in a semiclassical statement and is reduced to a system of integro-differential equations on the body domain and the screen surfaces. We show that the quadratic form of the problem operator is coercive and the operator itself is Fredholm with zero index.  相似文献

We study the behavior of the height of a liquid contained in a vertical cylindrical tube where are immerged a periodic distribution (period ɛ) of cylindrical fibers with radius r < ɛ and whose material-liquid coefficient is λ. It is showed that the homogenized problem depends on the limit of λr/ɛ2 as (ɛ, λ, r) → (0,0, 0). The second problem is when the border is made of two alternate periodic bands, the first of length r being incrusted in the second of length ɛ − r. Here, the homogenized problem depends on the limit of r/ɛ as (, r) → (0, 0). For this, we use epi-convergence techniques.  相似文献

We say that A(λ) is λ-imbeddable in B(λ) whenever B(λ) is equivalent to a λ-matrix having A(λ) as a submatrix. In this paper we solve the problem of finding a necessary and sufficient condition for A(λ) to be λ-imbeddable in B(λ). The solution is given in terms of the invariant polynomials of A(λ) and B(λ). We also solve an analogous problem when A(λ) and B(λ) are required to be equivalent to regular λ-matrices. As a consequence we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a matrix B, over a field F, with prescribed similarity invariant polynomials and a prescribed principal submatrix A.  相似文献
