The aggregation and cloud point behavior of Tb(III)-doped silica nanoparticles has been studied in Triton X-100 (TX-100) solutions at various concentration conditions by fluorimetry, dynamic light scattering, electrophoresis and transmission electron microscopy methods. The temperature responsive behavior of nanoparticles is observed at definite concentration of TX-100, where the aggregation of TX-100 at the silica/water interface is evident from the increased size of the silica nanoparticles. The reversible dehydration of TX-100 aggregates at the silica/water interface should be assumed as the main reason of the temperature induced phase separation of silica nanoparticles. The distribution of nanoparticles between aqueous and surfactant rich phases at the phase separation conditions can be modified by the effect of additives.  相似文献

The formation of silicate/organic hybrid micelles is an important milestone in the two-step synthesis of mesoporous silica with polyethyleneoxide (PEO) nonionic structure directing agents (C.R. Chimie 8 (2005) 579). Unlike many inorganic/organic hybrid micelles, these objects have the inorganic component as a diffuse layer positioned at the periphery of the initial micelles and interacting with the hydrophilic polyoxyethylene palisade. We studied how this additional inorganic layer can modify the structure and dynamics of micelles prepared with different types of nonionic surfactants using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence and dynamic light scattering. Our results show that these hybrid micelles still possess a versatile behavior, which allows them to adapt reversibly to temperature changes. This silicate layer tends to stabilize and consolidate the micelle structure, especially close to the cloud point of critical micelle temperature for polypropyleneoxide (PPO)-based triblock copolymers. Their internal structure is only slightly disturbed by the silicate layer, which reduces the molecular exchanges a little bit. Among other results, we managed to elucidate why mesoporous silica prepared with Pluronic P123, according to our synthesis, stands a dramatic structural change from wormhole to hexagonal structure at 40 °C. Our dynamic light scattering study shows that 40 °C is a critical temperature corresponding to a sphere-to-rodlike structural transition of hybrid micelles, which is not observed with pure micelles.  相似文献

Amphiphilic block copolymers made by a variety of techniques form in selective solvents micelles of well defined size and shape. We report on the underlying principles of micelle formation, as revealed by light scattering experiments. In addition, we will delineate some applications of these block-copolymer micelles where we focus on two technological relevant cases, namely the stabilization of polymer particles in low cohesion energy environments as well as the stabilization of metal and semiconductor colloids inside specially functionalized block copolymer micelles. In the latter case, stable hybride materials are obtained where the properties both of the polymer and the inorganic are added in a synergistic way. First data on special catalytic properties, the generation of superparamagnetic materials, and special colloids with optical functionality are presented.  相似文献

beta-Casein is one of the main proteins in milk, recently classified as an intrinsically unstructured protein. At neutral pH, it is composed of a highly polar N-terminus domain and a hydrophobic C-terminus tail. This amphiphilic block-copolymer-like structure leads to self-organization of the protein monomers into defined micelles. Recently, it has been shown that at room temperature, beta-casein also self-organizes into micelles in an acidic environment, but the effect of temperature on the micelles' formation and properties at the low pH regime were not explored. In the present study, we used two complementary techniques, cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), to characterize at high-resolution the micelles' shape, dimensions, and aggregation numbers and to determine how these properties are affected by temperature between 1 and 40 degrees C. Two different regimes were studied: highly acidic pH where the protein is cationic, and neutral pH, where it is anionic. We found that flat disk-like micelles with low aggregation numbers formed at low temperature in the two pH regimes. Close to neutral pH increase in temperature involves a transition in the micelles' shape and dimensions from flat disks to bulky, almost spheroidal micelles, coupled with a sharp increase in the micelles' aggregation number. In contrast, no effects on the micelles' morphology or aggregation number were detected in the acidic environment within the entire temperature range studied. The self-organization into disk micelles and the lack of effect of temperature in the acidic environment are linked to the unstructured character of the protein and to the charge distribution map. The latter indicates that below the isoelectric pH (pI), beta-casein loses the distinct separation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains, thereby suggesting that it may no longer be considered as a classical head-tail block-copolymer amphiphile as in neutral pH.  相似文献

The size-dependent interaction of anionic silica nanoparticles with ionic (anionic and cationic) and nonionic surfactants has been studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The surfactants used are anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cationic dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB), and nonionic decaoxyethylene n-dodecylether (C(12)E(10)). The measurements have been carried out for three different sizes of silica nanoparticles (8, 16, and 26 nm) at fixed concentrations (1 wt % each) of nanoparticles and surfactants. It is found that irrespective of the size of the nanoparticles there is no significant interaction evolved between like-charged nanoparticles and the SDS micelles leading to any structural changes. However, the strong attraction of oppositely charged DTAB micelles with silica nanoparticles results in the aggregation of nanoparticles. The number of micelles mediating the nanoparticle aggregation increases with the size of the nanoparticle. The aggregates are characterized by fractal structure where the fractal dimension is found to be constant (D ≈ 2.3) independent of the size of the nanoparticles and consistent with diffusion-limited-aggregation-type fractal morphology in these systems. In the case of nonionic surfactant C(12)E(10), micelles interact with the individual silica nanoparticles. The number of adsorbed micelles per nanoparticle increases drastically whereas the percentage of adsorbed micelles on nanoparticles decreases with the increase in the size of the nanoparticles.  相似文献

For the first time, the dispersion stability of silica nanoparticles has been investigated in high-temperature and high-pressure ethanol by measuring the hydrodynamic diffusion coefficient of the particles by means of dynamic light scattering. The silica nanoparticles remain stable in ethanol within a wide temperature range of 24-304 degrees C at 12.3 MPa, and they start to aggregate at T >or= 305 degrees C. Numerical analysis reveals that the net interparticle repulsive potential barrier decreases dramatically with increasing temperature due to the changes in the properties of the medium. We observed that particles remain highly stable in the nonpolar supercritical ethanol in the temperature regime 241-304 degrees C, where the DLVO potential barrier is only 5-2 k(B)T. The dispersion stability of silica nanoparticles at this low potential barrier in high-temperature and high-pressure ethanol, especially in the supercritical ethanol, is fascinating. The silica-ethanol system might be a unique and special example in the colloidal dispersions. Results suggest that silica nanoparticles may be used as a model colloid to investigate the colloidal transport phenomena in the supercritical ethanol.  相似文献

Gold nanoparticles were employed to prepare shell cross-linked Pluronic micelles that exhibit a reversibly thermosensitive swelling/shrinking behavior. Two terminal hydroxyl groups of Pluronic F127 were thiol-functionalized to form self-assembling Pluronic micelles in aqueous solution with exposed -SH groups in an outer shell layer. The thiol groups present in the outer shell were cross-linked by gold nanoparticles synthesized through NaBH4 reduction of gold precursor anions. The resultant shell cross-linked gold-Pluronic micelles exhibited a temperature-dependent volume transition: their hydrodynamic diameter was changed from 157.1 +/- 15.6 nm at 15 degrees C to 53.4 +/- 5.5 nm at 37 degrees C as determined by dynamic light scattering. The critical micelle temperature measured by a pyrene solubilization technique suggested that the reversible swelling/shrinking behavior of the micelles was caused by hydrophobic interactions of cross-linked or grafted Pluronic copolymer chains in the micelle structure with increasing temperature. Transmission electron microscopy directly revealed that the shell cross-linked micelles were indeed produced by gold nanoparticles covalently clustered on the surface. These novel self-assembled organic/inorganic hybrid micelles would hold great potential for diagnostic and therapeutic applications.  相似文献

We report how to control the self-assembly of magnetic nanoparticles and a prototypical amphiphilic block-copolymer composed of poly(acrylic acid) and polystyrene (PAA-b-PS). Three distinct structures were obtained by controlling the solvent-nanoparticle and polymer-nanoparticle interactions: (1) polymersomes densely packed with nanoparticles (magneto-polymersomes), (2) core-shell type polymer assemblies where nanoparticles are radially arranged at the interface between the polymer core and the shell (magneto-core shell), and (3) polymer micelles where nanoparticles are homogeneously incorporated (magneto-micelles). Importantly, we show that the incorporation of nanoparticles drastically affects the self-assembly structure of block-copolymers by modifying the relative volume ratio between the hydrophobic block and the hydrophilic block. As a consequence, the self-assembly of micelle-forming block-copolymers typically produces magneto-polymersomes instead of magneto-micelles. On the other hand, vesicle-forming polymers tend to form magneto-micelles due to the solubilization of nanoparticles in polymer assemblies. The nanoparticle-polymer interaction also controls the nanoparticle arrangement in the polymer matrix. In N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) where PS is not well-solvated, nanoparticles segregate from PS and form unique radial assemblies. In tetrahydrofuran (THF), which is a good solvent for both nanoparticles and PS, nanoparticles are homogeneously distributed in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the morphology of nanoparticle-encapsulating polymer assemblies significantly affects their magnetic relaxation properties, emphasizing the importance of the self-assembly structure and nanoparticle arrangement as well as the size of the assemblies.  相似文献

The possibility of determining the sizes of micelles of sodium di(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) with silver nanoparticles in decane against the background of a large excess of empty micelles by means of photon correlation spectroscopy with unimodal analysis of the autocorrelation function is demonstrated. Contributions from all components to the light scattering are estimated by measuring the static (Rayleigh) light scattering and allowing for partial absorption of the laser radiation by silver nanoparticles. Areas of the correct determination of the hydrodynamic radius of the micelles with nanoparticles are determined via unimodal analysis of the autocorrelation function in dependence on the nanoparticle size (10–2 nm) and silver concentration (1–30 mM) at a constant AOT concentration (0.25 mol/L) and aqueous pseudophase content (1 vol %).  相似文献

We report the phenomenon of clouding in charged micellar solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant with varying concentration of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) salt. The cloud point (CP) temperature is found to decrease significantly with TBAB concentration. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies have been performed on these systems to understand the evolution of structure and interaction of micelles prior and after the CP. Data are analyzed using Baxter’s sticky hard-sphere potential between the micelles as approaching the CP. It is found that the attractive potential amongst micelles increases with temperature leading to clustering at CP. Both the micelles and clusters coexist at CP and even at temperatures much higher than CP. The propensity of cluster formation strongly depends on the TBAB concentration where higher TBAB concentration provides smaller temperature range over which the clusters are formed. SANS data from clusters show a Porod scattering in the low-Q region, suggesting a very large size of the clusters. The stability of these clusters against phase separation is examined by the time-dependent SANS and compared for different TBAB concentrations.  相似文献

Surface modified ormosil nanoparticles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Organically modified silanes (ORMOSIL) such as vinyl triethoxysilane readily aggregate in the aqueous cores of reverse micelles where the triethoxysilane moieties are hydrolyzed to form a hydrated silica network and the vinyl groups protruded out from the surface of the nanoparticles toward the hydrophobic side of the micellar interface. These particles are spherical and the size distribution of the particles is relatively narrow, with an average diameter of 87 nm. Surface vinyl silica nanoparticles so formed have been oxidized to surface carboxylic silica nanoparticles, followed by chemical conjugation with polyethyleneglycol amine (PEG amine) through the ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) (EDCI) carbodiimide reaction. The characteristic surface groups have been identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, while the size and the morphology of the particles have been studied by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. It has been found that about 80-85% of the carboxylic groups are PEGylated during the EDCI reaction.  相似文献

Biocompatible and zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) was grafted onto the surface of initiator-modified silica nanoparticles via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The resultant samples were characterized via nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Their molecular weights and molecular weight distributions were determined via gel permeation chromatography after the removal of silica by etching. Moreover, the phase behavior of these polyzwitterionic-grafted silica nanoparticles in aqueous solutions and stability in protein/PBS solutions were systematically investigated. Dynamic light scattering and UV-visible spectroscopy results indicate that the silica-g-PSBMA nanoparticles exhibit an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in aqueous solutions, which can be controlled by varying the PSBMA molecular weight, ionic strength, silica-g-PSBMA nanoparticle concentration, and solvent polarity. The UCSTs shift toward high temperatures with increasing PSBMA molecular weight and silica-g-PSBMA nanoparticle concentration. However, increasing the ionic strength and solvent polarity leads to a lowering of the UCSTs. The silica-g-PSBMA nanoparticles are stable for at least 72 h in both negative and positive protein/PBS solutions at 37 °C. The current study is crucial for the translation of polyzwitterionic solution behavior to surfaces to exploit their diverse properties in the development of new, smart, and responsive coatings.

We investigated the aggregation behavior of rod-like micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in concentrated NaCl solution by quasi-elastic light scattering (QLS) and viscosity measurement over a range of temperature (25 °C to 50 °C) and NaCl concentration. The reduced viscosity of aqueous SDS in the presence of NaCl has been measured by an Ubbelohde-type capillary viscometer. We show mean hydrodynamic radius of micelles can be determined from viscosity data. We also determined mean hydrodynamic radius using quasi-elastic light scattering. Micellar size decreases with increasing temperature, whereas it increases with increasing ionic strength. The results of viscosity and dynamic light-scattering measurements are interpreted as the extension of length of rod-like micelles. We compare viscosity and light scattering experimental results.  相似文献

The effects of salt, temperature, and deuterium oxide on the self-aggregation of n-tetradecyl-beta-d-maltoside (C(14)G(2)) in dilute solution have been investigated by static light scattering, dynamic light scattering (DLS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), tensiometry, and capillary viscometry. SANS data show that the micelles can be described as relatively flexible polymer-like micelles with an elliptical cross section, at least at temperatures between 35 and 50 degrees C. The micelles grow in one dimension with increasing temperature and concentration. DLS and viscometry data suggest that the micelle size reaches a maximum at 60-70 degrees C. Comparison of DLS data in D(2)O and H(2)O shows that the micelles are larger in the former case. The effect of salt on the micelle size was found to follow the Hofmeister series. Thus, at constant salt concentration, the micelle size decreases according to the sequence SO(4)(2)(-) > Cl(-) > NO(3)(-) > I(-) > SCN(-), where I(-) and SCN(-) act as salting-in anions. From tensiometric data, it can be concluded that the temperature effects on micelle morphology do not correlate directly with those on unimer solubility. Rather, the temperature effect on the hydrocarbon chain conformation seems to be decisive for the micelle morphology. At constant temperature, on the other hand, the effect of salt and deuterium isotope is attributable to changes in effective headgroup area, including intermolecular interactions and water of hydration.  相似文献

A new method is presented for preparing monodisperse and uniform-size silica nanoparticles using a two-stage hydrolysis of silicon powder in aqueous medium. The influence of synthesis conditions including solution composition and temperature on the formation of silica nanoparticles were systematically investigated. The structure and morphology of the silica particles were characterized via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Various-sized particles in the range 10–100 nm were synthesized. The size of the nanoparticles can be precisely controlled by using a facile regrowth procedure in the same reaction media.  相似文献

Elastic light scattering is reported using monochromatic vacuum-ultraviolet radiation to study free, spherical silica nanoparticles prepared by approaches from colloidal chemistry, with diameters between 100 and 240 nm. The colloidal nanoparticles of defined size are transferred from an aqueous solution into the gas phase using a particle beam experiment. After focusing of the particle beam by an aerodynamic lens, the scattered light from monochromatic synchrotron radiation is measured. Angle-resolved elastically scattered light is detected, showing a strong forward-scattering component. Additional evidence for the detection of elastically scattered light comes from plotting the scattered light intensity as a function of the dimensionless parameter qR, where q is the magnitude of the scattering wave vector and R is the particle radius. This yields different power-law regimes that are assigned to scattering from the surface and the bulk of the nanoparticles. Furthermore, there is evidence for modulations in the scattered light intensity as a function of scattering angle, which is clearly distinguished from the forward-scattering component. The experimental results are compared to Mie scattering simulations for isolated particles, yielding general agreement with the experimental results. Deviations from Mie simulations are observed for samples consisting of significant amounts of aggregates. The present results indicate that the optical properties of free nanoparticles are sensitively probed by vacuum-ultraviolet radiation.  相似文献

The time evolution of silica nanoparticles in solutions of tetrapropylammonium (TPA) has been studied using a combination of small-angle scattering, conductivity, and pH measurements to provide the first comprehensive analysis of nanoparticle structural and compositional changes at elevated temperatures. We have found that silica-TPA nanoparticles subjected to hydrothermal treatment (70-90 degrees C) grow via an Ostwald ripening mechanism with growth rates that depend on both pH and temperature. Small-angle X-ray (SAXS) and neutron (SANS) scattering confirm that the core-shell structure of the particles, initially present at room temperature, is maintained during heating, but an evolution toward sphericity is evidenced especially at high values of pH. SAXS absolute intensity calculations were utilized to calculate the changes in nanoparticle composition and concentration over time. These changes along with the conductivity and pH measurements and SANS contrast matching studies indicate that, upon heating, TPA becomes embedded in the core of nanoparticles giving rise to more zeolitic-looking nanomaterials.  相似文献

The thermoresponsive micellization behavior of amphoteric polyurethane (APU) was studied in HCl aqueous solution (pH 2.0) through light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescent measurement. When APU concentration is high enough, nonreversible assembly of macromolecules can be observed with temperature decreasing from 25 to 4 degrees C. However, micelles reaching equilibrium at 4 degrees C can self-assemble reversibly in the temperature range of 4-55 degrees C. According to our research, we found it is the temperature sensitivity of the poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) segments that leads to the reassembly of APU at lower temperature. We proposed that core-shell-corona micelles ultimately form with hydrophobic core, PPO shell, and hydrophilic corona when temperature increases from 4 to 25 degrees C. This structure is very stable and does not change at higher temperatures (25-55 degrees C). That provides a new way to obtain stable micelles with small size and narrow size distribution at higher concentration of APU.  相似文献
