Transport properties of ion swarms in presence of Resonant Charge Transfer (RCT) collisions are studied using Momentum Transfer Theory (MTT). It was shown that, not surprisingly, RCT collisions may be represented as a special case of elastic scattering. Using the developed MTT we tested a previously available anisotropic set of cross-sections for Ar+Ar + collisions by making the comparisons with the available data for the transverse diffusion coefficient. We also developed an anisotropic set of Ne+Ne + integral cross-sections based on the available data for mobility, longitudinal and transverse diffusion. Anisotropic sets of cross-sections are needed for Monte Carlo simulations of ion transport and plasma models. Multi-species reaction-diffusion systems, with nearest-neighbor interaction on a one-dimensional lattice are considered. Necessary and sufficient constraints on the interaction rates are obtained, that guarantee the closedness of the time evolution equation for E n(t)'s, the expectation value of the product of certain linear combination of the number operators on n consecutive sites at time t. The constraints are solved for the single-species left-right-symmetric systems. Also, examples of multi-species system for which the evolution equations of E n(t)'s are closed, are given. The β--decay of 151Pr produced by the thermal neutron-induced fission of 235U has been studied using an on-line isotope separator. From an internal-conversion electron measurement with a Si(Li) detector, K-conversion coefficients were obtained for 20 γ-transitions. Spins and parities of 6 excited levels in 151Nd were newly determined from the deduced multipolarities: even parities for the 543 and 627 keV levels, odd parities for 250 and 599 keV, (3/2, 5/2)+ for 685 keV, and (1/2, 3/2)+ for 880 keV. The level structure was compared with the rotation-vibration coupling Nilsson model. The electromagnetic form factor of the kaon meson is calculated in the light-cone formalism of the relativistic constituent quark model. The calculated K+ form factor is consistent with almost all of the available experimental data at low-energy scale, while other properties of the kaon could also be interrelated in this representation with reasonable parameters. Predictions of the form factors for the charged and neutral kaons at a higher-energy scale are also given, and we find the non-zero K0 form factor at Q 2≠ 0 due to the mass difference between the strange and down quarks inside K0. Careful review of all the evidence makes it clear that at least three states are important at 12.4-MeV excitation in 20Ne (four, if the broad (2+) at 12.5 MeV is included). The three states are 3 - , 0 + , and 1 + (0+). The latter, which is quite strong in 19F (3He, d) singles, is probably the state observed in coincidence with 6.13-MeV γ-rays in 19F(3He, dγ). We show that the electronic states in a one-dimensional (1D) Anderson model of diagonal disorder with long-range correlation proposed by de Moura and Lyra exhibit localization-delocalization phase transition in varying the energy of electrons. Using transfer matrix method, we calculate the average resistivity and investigate how it changes with the size of the system N. For given value of α (> 2) we find critical energies Ec1 and Ec2 such that the resistivity decreases with N as a power law ∝ N - γ for electron energies within the range of [E c1, E c2], and exponentially grows with N outside this range. Such behaviors persist in approaching the transition points and the exponent γ is in the range from 0.92 to 0.96. The origin of the delocalization in this 1D model is discussed. The relationship between a microscopic parameter p, that is related to the probability of choosing a mechanism of deposition, and the stochastic equation for the interface's evolution is studied for two different models. It is found that in one model, that is similar to ballistic deposition, the corresponding stochastic equation can be represented by a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation where both λ and ν depend on p in the following way: ν(p) = νp and λ(p) = λp 3/2. Furthermore, in the other studied model, which is similar to random deposition with relaxation, the stochastic equation can be represented by an Edwards-Wilkinson (EW) equation where ν depends on p according to ν(p) = νp 2. It is expected that these results will help to find a framework for the development of stochastic equations starting from microscopic details of growth models. The production of K+-mesons in proton-nucleus collisions from 1.0 to 2.5GeV is analyzed with respect to one-step nucleon-nucleon ( NNNYK +) and two-step Δ-nucleon ( ΔNK + YN) or pion-nucleon ( πNK + Y) production channels on the basis of a coupled-channel transport approach (CBUU) including the kaon final-state interactions. The influence of momentum-dependent potentials for the nucleon, hyperon and kaon in the final state are studied as well as the importance of K+ elastic rescattering in the target nucleus. The transport calculations are compared to the experimental K+ spectra taken at LBL Berkeley, SATURNE, CELSIUS, GSI and COSY-Jülich. It is found that the momentum-dependent baryon potentials affect the excitation function of the K+ cross-section; at low bombarding energies of ∼ 1.0GeV the attractive baryon potentials in the final state lead to a relative enhancement of the kaon yield, whereas the net repulsive potential at bombarding energies ∼ 2GeV causes a decrease of the K+ cross-section. Furthermore, it is pointed out that especially the K+ spectra at low momenta (or kinetic energy T K) allow to determine the in-medium K+ potential almost model independently due to a relative shift of the K+ spectra in kinetic energy that arises from the acceleration of the kaons when propagating out of the nuclear medium to free space, i.e. converting the potential energy to the kinetic energy of the free kaon. We present a method for the numerical investigation of the electron dynamics in small metallic clusters in intense laser fields. We obtain information about collective excitations and relaxation processes in the Na 9 + and Pt3 clusters analyzing the power spectrum of the dipole moment within a mean-field approach. The power spectrum is computed for various laser pulse parameters as well as for the limit of an infinitely short laser pulse. Due to the basis set expansion of the wave function our method is capable to follow the dynamics not only of the whole electron cloud, but of any particular molecular orbital. For a detailed study of the accuracy of the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP all expected sources of uncertainty were investigated with respect to their contributions to the uncertainty of the final result. In the course of these investigations, cross-reference measurements with singly charged carbon clusters 12C+ n were carried out. The carbon cluster ions were produced by use of laser-induced desorption, fragmentation, and ionization of C60 fullerenes and injected into and stored in the Penning trap system. The comparison of the cyclotron frequencies of different carbon clusters has provided detailed insight into the residual systematic uncertainty of ISOLTRAP and yielded a value of 8×10-9. This also represents the current limit of mass accuracy of the apparatus. Since the unified atomic mass unit is defined as 1/12 of the mass of the 12C atom, it will be possible to carry out absolute mass measurements with ISOLTRAP in the future. The beta-decay of the N = Z, even-even nucleus 72Kr has been studied at the ISOLDE PSB facility at CERN. Measurements of βγ and βγγ coincidences have enriched the decay scheme of the daughter nucleus 72Br with 27 new low spin levels. A more precise half-life of T 1/2 = 17.1(2) s has been determined. Strong feeding to the 72Br ground state is established yielding an unambiguous J π = 1+ assignment for this state. Candidates for the 72Br g.s. wave function are discussed in the framework of a self-consistent deformed mean-field calculation with SG2 Skyrme force and pairing correlations. A search for beta-delayed particle emission was made and an upper limit of 10-6 for this decay branch obtained. The cumulated experimental level density of 1+ states has been fitted with the constant temperature formula. The comparison indicates that most likely all 1+ levels up to 1.2 MeV have been observed in this investigation. The corresponding nearest-neighbour level spacing does not follow a Poisson distribution. The Gamow-Teller strength distribution is compared, in terms of nuclear deformation, with different calculations made in the framework of the quasiparticle random phase approximation. We demonstrate the usefulness of two-dimensional hyperbolic geometry as a tool to generate three-dimensional Euclidean (E3) networks. The technique involves projection of edges of tilings of the hyperbolic plane (H2) onto three-periodic minimal surfaces, embedded in E3. Given the extraordinary wealth of symmetries commensurate with H2, we can generate networks in E3 that are difficult to construct otherwise. In particular, we form four-, five- and seven-connected (E3) nets containing three- and five-rings, viz. (3, 7), (5, 4) and (5, 5) tilings in H2. The structure of neutron-rich light nuclei around N = 20 and 28 has been investigated at GANIL by means of in-beam gamma-spectroscopy using fragmentation reactions of 36S and 48Ca beams on a Be target. Gamma-decay of relatively high-lying excited states have been measured for the first time in nuclei around 32Mg and 44S. Level schemes are proposed and discussed for a large number of these neutron-rich nuclei around N = 20 and N = 28. Excited levels in 140Xe and 142Xe nuclei, populated in the spontaneous fission of 248Cm, were studied by means of prompt γ-ray spectroscopy, using EUROGAM2 array. We report the first observation of an octupole band in 142Xe and extend the octupole band in 140Xe. Level schemes of 140Xe and 142Xe obtained in this work show patterns characteristic of ocupole-vibrational bands. Properties of octupole bands in Xe isotopes indicate that octupole correlations in these nuclei are lower than in the corresponding Ba nuclei. The electric dipole moment of 142Xe was found to be larger than in other Xe isotopes, contrary to theoretical predictions. This may be due to the special role of the N = 88 neutron number. The Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has recently produced the world's first post-accelerated beams of heavy neutron-rich nuclei. The first experiments with these beam are described, and the results discussed. B(E2;0+ → 2+) values for neutron-rich 126,128Sn and 132,134,136Te isotopes have been measured by Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics. The results for 132Te and 134Te (N = 80, 82) show excellent agreement with systematics of lighter Te isotopes, but the B(E2) value for 136Te (N = 84) is unexpectedly small. Single-neutron transfer reactions with a 134Te beam on natBe and 13C targets at energies just above the Coulomb barrier have also been studied. Neural networks are supposed to recognise blurred images (or patterns) of N pixels (bits) each. Application of the network to an initial blurred version of one of P pre-assigned patterns should converge to the correct pattern. In the “standard" Hopfield model, the N “neurons” are connected to each other via N2 bonds which contain the information on the stored patterns. Thus computer time and memory in general grow with N2. The Hebb rule assigns synaptic coupling strengths proportional to the overlap of the stored patterns at the two coupled neurons. Here we simulate the Hopfield model on the Barabási-Albert scale-free network, in which each newly added neuron is connected to only m other neurons, and at the end the number of neurons with q neighbours decays as 1/q 3. Although the quality of retrieval decreases for small m, we find good associative memory for 1 ≪ mN. Hence, these networks gain a factor N/m ≫ 1 in the computer memory and time. Electromagnetic properties of the low-lying states in a 70Ge nucleus were studied through the multiple Coulomb excitation of a 70Ge beam with a natPb target. Relative γ-ray intensities were measured as a function of emission angle relative to the scattered projectile. Sixteen E2 matrix elements, including diagonal ones, for 6 low-lying states have been determined using the least-squares search code GOSIA. The expectation values 〈Q 2〉 of 01 + and 02 + states in 70Ge are compared with those in 72, 74, 76Ge. Simple mixing calculations indicate that the 02 + states in 70Ge and 72Se can be treated as deformed intruder states. It is shown that the deformed intruder becomes the ground state in 74Kr. These interpretations of the 02 + states in this region are compared with the potential-energy surface calculations by the Nilsson-Strutinsky model, which allow to interpret the experimental results in a qualitative way from the theoretical point of view. The neutron-rich nuclei 23 60-63V have been produced at GANIL via interactions of a 61.8A·MeV 76Ge beam with a 58Ni target. Beta-decay to 24 60-63Cr has been investigated using combined β- and γ-ray spectroscopy. Half-lives of the 60-63V nuclei have been determined, and the existence of a beta-decay isomer in the 60V nucleus is strongly supported. The observation of low-energy 2+ states in 60Cr (646keV) and 62Cr (446keV) suggests that these isotopes are strongly deformed with β2 ∼ 0.3. This is confirmed by shell model calculations which show the dominant influence of the intruder g and d orbitals to obtain low 2+ energies in the neutron-rich Cr isotopes.
