We present a controlling potential method for solving the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), which governs the nonlinear dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in an inhomogeneous potential trap. Our method allows one to construct ground and excited matter wave states whose longitudinal profiles can have bright solitons. This method provides the confining potential that filters and controls localized BECs. Moreover, it is predicted that, while the BEC longitudinal soliton profile is controlled and kept unchanged, the transverse profile may exhibit oscillatory breathers (the unmatched case) or move as a rigid body in the form of either coherent states (performing the Lissajous figures) or a Schrödinger cat state (matched case).

The evolution of solitons in Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs) with time-dependent atomic scattering length in an expulsive parabolic potential is studied. Based on the extended hyperbolic function method, we successfully obtain the bright and dark soliton solutions. In addition, some new soliton solutions in this model are found. The results in this paper include some in the literature ({\em Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 94} (2005) 050402 and {\em Chin. Phys. Lett.} {\bf 22} (2005) 1855).

Bright and dark matter wave solitons are constructed analytically in a three-dimensional (3D) highly anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a time-dependent parabolic potential, and numerical simulations are performed to confirm the existence and dynamics of such analytical solutions. Different classes of bright and dark solitons are discovered among the solutions of the generalized anisotropic (3+1)D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our results demonstrate that the bright and dark solitary waves can be manipulated and controlled by changing the scattering length, which can be used to compress the second-order bright and dark solitons of BECs into desired peak density.

Three types of two bright bound solitons with increasing coherence are investigated in the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with the exponentially time-dependent interparticle interaction in an expulsive parabolic potential. Two methods are provided with symbolic computation to improve the number of matter density peaks within the given temporal range before the collapse of the solitons under the one-dimensional approximation: (i) enhancing the axial harmonic oscillator frequency; (ii) increasing the initial coherence of the bound solitons. Compression of the three- and four-bright-bound-soliton trains is presented. Estimation of the net binding forces among the bound solitons gives an explanation for the interaction patterns if the coherence of the bound state is limited. Our investigation theoretically reveals the existence of the bright bound solitons in the BECs and analyzes their complex interactions.

We investigate the moving matter-wave solitons in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates(BECs) by a perturbation method.Starting with the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations,we derive a new KdV-like equation to which an approximate solution is obtained by assuming weak Raman coupling and strong spinorbit coupling. The derivation of the KdV-like equation may be useful to understand the properties of solitons excitation in spin-orbit coupled BECs.We find different types of moving solitons:dark-bright,bright-bright and dark-dark solitons.Interestingly, moving dark-dark soliton for attractive intra- and inter-species interactions is found, which depends on the Raman coupling. The amplitude and velocity of the moving solitons strongly depend on the Raman coupling and spin-orbit coupling.

We investigate the dynamics of bright matter wave solitons in spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates with time modulated nonlinearities. We obtain soliton solutions of an integrable autonomous three-coupled Gross–Pitaevskii (3-GP) equations using Hirota?s method involving a non-standard bilinearization. The similarity transformations are developed to construct the soliton solutions of non-autonomous 3-GP system. The non-autonomous solitons admit different density profiles. An interesting phenomenon of soliton compression is identified for kink-like nonlinearity coefficient with Hermite–Gaussian-like potential strength. Our study shows that these non-autonomous solitons undergo non-trivial collisions involving condensate switching.

We investigate the dynamics of matter-wave solitons in the one-dimensional (1-D)Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation describing Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) withtime-dependent scattering length in varying trapping potentials with feeding/loss term. Byperforming a modified lens-type transformation, we reduce the GP equation into a classicalnonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with distributed coefficients and find its integrablecondition. Under the integrable condition, we apply the generalized Jacobian ellipticfunction method (GJEFM) and present exact analytical solutions which describe thepropagation of a bright and dark solitons in BECs. Their stability is examined usinganalytic method. The obtained exact solutions show that the amplitude of bright and darksolitons depends on the scattering length, while their motion and the total number of BECatoms depend on the external trapping potential. Our results also shown that the loss ofatoms can dominate the aggregation of atoms by the attractive interaction, and thus thepeak density can decrease in time despite that the strength of the attractive interactionis increased.

We present three families of soliton solutions to the generalized (3+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with distributed coefficients. We investigate the dynamics of these solitons in nonlinear optics with some selected parameters. Different shapes of bright solitons, a train of bright solitons and dark solitons are observed. The obtained results may raise the possibilities of relevant experiments and potential applications.

We report the first experimental observation of discrete solitons in an array of optically induced waveguides. The waveguide lattice is induced in real time by illuminating a photorefractive crystal with a pair of interfering plane waves. We demonstrate two types of bright discrete solitons: in-phase self-localized states and the staggered (pi out-of-phase) soliton family. This experiment is the first observation of bright staggered solitons in any physical system. Our scheme paves the way for reconfigurable focusing and defocusing photonic lattices where low-power (mW) discrete solitons can be thoroughly investigated.

We analyze the dynamics of a bright soliton in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with time-dependent atomic scattering length in an expulsive parabolic potential. Under a safe range of parameters in which the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation is effective in one dimension, our results show that, the dynamics of the bright soliton can be classed into two phases, depending on the value of the scattering length. Meanwhile, there exists a critical value of the absolute value of the atomicscattering length, below which, the dynamics of the bright soliton is very regular. Those phenomena can be useful for developing concrete applications of the nonlinear matter waves. We also obtain the orbital equation of the bright soliton and get some interesting data which may be useful for the experimental observation of the bright soliton and the application of the atom laser with manipulated intensity.

We investigate compression of the bright bound solitons in the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) by exponentially increasing the absolute value of the atomic scattering length. Similarity transformation and Hirota bilinear method are used to symbolically solve the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the time-dependent coefficients. We present types of the bright bound solitons in compression through manipulating their initial coherence. Results show that the improved quantity of the atomic density peaks can be observed before the collapse of the solitons when their coherence is increased. Furthermore, we discuss how those compressed bound solitons are influenced by the adjacent solitons. The bound structures in our study are illustrated to exist with the parameters within the current experimental capacity (the spatial and temporal ranges of the bound solitons are less than 56 μm and 50 ms in our investigation), which suggests a future observation in the BECs experiments.

We consider two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations describing a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with time-dependent atomic interactions loaded in an external harmonic potential, and investigate the dynamics of vector solitons.By using a direct method,we construct a novel family of vector soliton solutions, which are the linear combination between dark and bright solitons in each component. Our results show that due to the superposition between dark and bright solitons, such vector solitons possess many novel and interesting properties. The dynamics of vector solitons can be controlled by the Feshbach resonance technique, and the vector solitons can keep the dynamic stability against the variation of the scattering length.

The Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE) describing the evolution of the Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) order parameter for weakly interacting bosons supports dark solitons for repulsive interactions and bright solitons for attractive interactions. After a brief introduction to BEC and a general review of GPE solitons, we present our results on solitons that arise in the BEC of hard-core bosons, which is a system with strongly repulsive interactions. For a given background density, this system is found to support both a dark soliton and an antidark soliton (i.e., a bright soliton on a pedestal) for the density profile. When the background has more (less) holes than particles, the dark (antidark) soliton solution dies down as its velocity approaches the sound velocity of the system, while the antidark (dark) soliton persists all the way up to the sound velocity. This persistence is in contrast to the behaviour of the GPE dark soliton, which dies down at the Bogoliubov sound velocity. The energy–momentum dispersion relation for the solitons is shown to be similar to the exact quantum low-lying excitation spectrum found by Lieb for bosons with a delta-function interaction.

We analyze the dynamics of bright-bright solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) subject to parametric perturbations using the variational approach and direct numerical simulations. The system is described by a vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) appropriate to coupled multi-component BECs. A periodic variation of the inter-component coupling coefficient is used to explore nonlinear resonances and splitting of the coupled bright solitons. The analytical predictions are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the vector NLSE.

We investigate the oscillation periods of bright soliton pair or vector bright soliton pair in harmonic potentials. We demonstrate that periods of low-speed solitons are greatly affected by the position shift during their collisions. The modified oscillation periods are described by defining a characterized speed, with the aid of asymptotic analysis on related exact analytic soliton solutions in integrable cases. The oscillation period can be used to distinguish the inter- and intra-species interactions between solitons. However, a bright soliton cannot oscillate in a harmonic trap, when it is coupled with a dark soliton (without any trapping potentials). Interestingly, it can oscillate in an anti-harmonic potential, and the oscillation behavior is explained by a quasi-particle theory. The modified period of two dark-bright solitons can be also described well by the characterized speed. These results address well the effects of position shift during soliton collision, which provides an important supplement for previous studies without considering phase shift effects.

Dark (bright) steady-state spatial solitons are predicted in one dimension for a series circuit consisting of two two-photon photorefractive crystals of which at least one must be photovoltaic. Each crystal can support a spatial soliton. The two solitons are known collectively as separate spatial soliton pairs with three types: dark-dark, bright-dark and bright-bright. In the limit in which the optical wave has a spatial extent much less than the width of the crystal, the dark soliton can affect the other soliton by light-induced current, but the bright soliton cannot affect the other soliton in the soliton pair.
