An equal pulse correlation technique based on angle-resolved two-photon photoemission is employed to investigate the lifetime of electronic excitations of an adsorbate on a single crystal metal surface. Photoemission from an occupied surface state on Cu(111) by a non-resonant two-photon process via the sp-band gap is used to characterize directly at the surface the width and shape of 65 fs laser pulses at a photon energy of hv = 3.4 eV. The 2PPE correlation technique allows the establishment of an upper limit of τ < 20 fs for the lifetime of the 2π* resonance of CO adsorbed on Cu(111), whereas from the spectral width of the 2π* level a lower limit of ≈1 fs is estimated.

The photochemistry of cyclohexane on Cu(111) and its excitation mechanism have been studied by temperature-programmed desorption, ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Cyclohexane weakly adsorbed on Cu(111) has been known to show a broadened and redshifted CH stretching band, i.e., CH vibrational mode softening. Although no dehydrogenation takes place thermally on this surface and by the irradiation of photons at 5.0 eV, adsorbed cyclohexane is dissociated to cyclohexyl and hydrogen by the irradiation of photons at 6.4 eV. This is a marked contrast to cyclohexane in the gas phase where the onset of absorption is located at 7 eV. When the surface irradiated by 6.4-eV photons is further annealed, cyclohexyl is dehydrogenated to form cylcohexene that desorbs at 230 K. The systematic measurements of photochemical cross sections at 6.4 eV with linearly polarized light as a function of incident angle indicate that the electronic transition from the highest occupied band of cyclohexane to a partially occupied hybridized band near the Fermi level is responsible for the photochemistry. The hybridized band is formed by the interactions between the electronic states of cyclohexane and the metal substrate. The role of the hybridized band in the photochemistry and the CH vibrational mode softening is discussed.

在Au(111)和Cu(111)这两个表面上,化学计量比氧化锌都形成非极性的平面化ZnO(0001)的表面结构。

Excited state electron transfer at the adsorbate/metal interface represents a key step in molecular electronic devices. The dynamics of such processes are governed by ultrafast energy relaxation which can be probed directly by time-resolved two-photon photoemission (2PPE). Using 2PPE spectroscopy we investigate the energetics and lifetimes of the unoccupied electronic states of C6F6 adsorbed on Cu(111) as a model system for electron transfer at organic/metal interfaces. With increasing C6F6 layer thickness we find a pronounced decrease in the energetic position of the lowest unoccupied state, which is accompanied by a strong increase in its lifetime as well as a decrease in the effective electron mass. The frequently employed dielectric continuum model which describes delocalized (quantum well) states within adsorbate layers does not give a consistent explanation of these findings. By adsorption of Xe overlayers onto C6F6/Cu(111) we can show that, even for one monolayer of C6F6, the excited state must be localized predominantly inside the C6F6 layer and thus originates from a molecular state (presumably an antibonding sigma* orbital). With increasing coverage this state becomes more delocalized within the adsorbate layer, which reduces the coupling to the metal substrate and thus enhances the excited state lifetime.

Ab initio band-structure calculations within a density functional formalism were performed to compute the binding energy curves of atomic hydrogen with the high-symmetry adsorption sites of the (111) surface of copper. For a two-layer slab of Cu atoms and H coverage equal to 0.25, the binding energies are 2.25, 3.12, and 3.24 eV, for on-top, bridge, and threefold sites, so that the chemisorption of H2 on Cu(111) is exothermic for threefold and bridge sites, but endothermic for on-top sites. Starting from these results, an LEPS potential for the interaction of H2 with the Cu(111) surface was built. In this model potential, the most favored approaches correspond to a H2 molecule parallel to the Cu surface, and for them, the activation barrier is located at the corner between the entrance and the exit channels of the reaction, and its lowest value is 0.6 eV. The LEPS potential was used in quasi-classical trajectories calculations to simulate the adsorption of a beam of H2 molecules on Cu(111). The results show that (a) when H2 is in the ground vibrational state the dissociative adsorption probability Pa increases from 0 to .90 along a roughly sigmoidal curve by increasing the collision kinetic energy from 0.4 to 1.3 eV, and (b) the vibrational energy can be as effective as the translational one in promoting dissociative chemisorption, in agreement with the experimental results.

The ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS) of CO adsorbed on the (111) face of Cu are found to be dependent on coverage from exposure of 0.3 L up to saturation. At the lowest dose two intense molecular orbitals are observed at binding energies of 8.7 and 11.7 eV (phase I). The intensity of two additional structures at 9.6 and 13.7 eV is quickly enhanced with increasing exposure (phase II), more weakly bound, yielding at saturation coverage the complex four-peak spectra usually reported for CO on Cu. We therefore reassign the levels at 11.7 and 8.7 eV to the 4σ and overlap of (1π + 5σ) molecular orbitals of CO adsorbed on top position and the levels at 13.7 and 9.6 eV to the same for CO adsorbed on bridge position.

Photoemission from an ice film deposited on Cu(111) as a function of thickness has been observed in the presence and absence of sodium atoms at the surface-vacuum interface. For either adsorbate alone and photon energies below 4 eV, two-photon photoemission from the Cu(111) substrate dominates. The Cu(111) photoelectron spectrum is perturbed by low coverages of Na, and its intensity is strongly attenuated by a few monolayers of ice. For a low density amorphous ice film, strong charging effects are observed. For ice films annealed to yield either the dense amorphous or crystalline phase, this effect is absent. Deposition of only 0.02 monolayer of Na leads to a dramatic decrease in the threshold for photoemission to 2.3+/-0.2 eV. Thus, photoelectrons are generated by visible radiation in a one-photon process with a cross section that exceeds 10(-18) cm(2). The initial state for the photoemission is identified as a metastable surface trapped electron, which decays thermally with an activation energy of 10+/-2 kJ mol(-1). Quantum calculations are described which support this model and show that the Na atom is accommodated in the first layer of the ice surface.

The adsorption of benzotriazole--an outstanding corrosion inhibitor for copper--on Cu(111), Cu(100), Cu(110), and low coordinated defects thereon has been studied and characterized using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We find that benzotriazole can either chemisorb in an upright geometry or physisorb with the molecular plane being nearly parallel to the surface. While the magnitude of chemisorption energy increases as passing from densely packed Cu(111) to more open surfaces and low coordinated defects, the physisorption energy is instead rather similar on all three low Miller index surfaces. It is pointed out that due to a large dipole moment of benzotriazole the dipole-dipole interactions are rather important. For perpendicular chemisorption modes the lateral repulsion is very long ranged, extending up to the nearest-neighbor distance of about 60 bohrs, whereas for parallel adsorption modes the lateral interactions are far less pronounced and the molecules experience a weak attraction at distances ?25 bohrs. The chemisorption energies were therefore extrapolated to zero coverage by a recently developed scheme and the resulting values are -0.60, -0.73, and -0.92 eV for Cu(111), Cu(100), and Cu(110), respectively, whereas the zero-coverage physisorption energy is about -0.7 eV irrespective of the surface plane. While the more densely packed surfaces are not reactive enough to interact with the molecular π-system, the reactivity of Cu(110) appears to be at the onset of such interaction, resulting in a very stable parallel adsorption structure with an adsorption energy of -1.3 eV that is ascribed as an apparent chemisorption+physisorption mode.

Using temperature‐programmed desorption, supported by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, a comprehensive overview of the main reactions of 5,10,15,20‐tetraphenyl‐21H,23H‐porphyrin (2HTPP) on Cu(111) as a function of coverage and temperature is obtained. Three reactions were identified: metalation with Cu substrate atoms, stepwise partial dehydrogenation, and finally complete dehydrogenation. At low coverage the reactions are independent of coverage, but at higher coverage metalation becomes faster and partial dehydrogenation slower. This behavior is explained by a weaker interaction between the iminic nitrogen atoms and the Cu(111) surface in the high‐coverage checkerboard structure, leading to faster metalation, and the stabilizing effect of T‐type interactions in the CuTPP islands formed at high coverage after metalation, leading to slower dehydrogenation. Based on the amount of hydrogen released and the appearance in STM, a structure of the partially dehydrogenated molecule is suggested.

The bonding properties of 1-phenyl-1-propyne (PP, C6H5CCCH3) on Cu(111) at 100 K have been studied using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and X-ray, ultraviolet, and two-photon photoemission spectroscopies (XPS, UPS, and 2PPE). In TPD, there is no evidence for dissociation. Multilayer desorption occurs at 187 K, and monolayer desorption occurs at 320 (83.5 kJ/mol) and 390 K (102.4 kJ/mol), with the latter dominating. Based on the calibrated C(1s) XPS, the saturation monolayer coverage is one PP per four surface Cu atoms. The broad and asymmetric C(1s) intensity profile of the monolayer can be resolved into three symmetric components, with peaks at 283.6, 284.5, and 285.2 eV and intensities of 2:6:1, respectively. These are attributed, respectively, to acetylenic carbons bound to Cu, phenyl, and methyl carbons. The monolayer valence band ultraviolet photoemission spectrum profile contains four resonances attributable to PP perturbed by interactions with the Cu(111) substrate. With the exception of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) that is shifted by 0.4 eV, these are uniformly shifted by 1 eV further from the Fermi level for the multilayer. Calculated electron density plots of the occupied orbitals coupled with UPS profiles suggest a spectator role for the phenyl group and bonding to Cu via the acetylenic carbons. The adsorption of 1.0 monolayer (ML) of PP on Cu(111) lowers the work function by 0.85 eV. Using 2PPE, two unoccupied orbitals were identified at 1.0 (U1*-LUMO) and 0.6 eV (U2*-image state) below the vacuum level. A chemisorption model consistent with these spectroscopic results and the major chemisorption peak in TPD involve di-sigma-bonding of the acetylenic carbons to a pair of second-nearest neighbor surface Cu atoms (cross-bridge).

The derivatives of aromatic cores bearing alkyl chains with different lengths are of potential interest in on-surface chemistry, and thus have been widely investigated both at liquid-solid interfaces and in vacuum. Here, we report on the structural evaluation of self-assembled 1,3,5-tri(4-dodecylphenyl)benzene(TDPB) molecules with increased molecular coverages on both Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces. As observed on Au(111), rhombic and herringbone structures emerge successively depending on surface coverage. In the case of Cu(111), the same process of phase conversion is also observed, but with two distinct structures. In comparison, the self-assembled structures on Au(111) surface are packed more densely than that on Cu(111) surface under the same preparation conditions. This may fundamentally result from the higher adsorption energy of TDPB molecules on Cu(111), restricting their adjustment to optimize a thermodynamically favorable molecular packing.

The interactions of Na+ and Cu+ cations with a Cu(111) surface in the presence and absence of water molecules were investigated using cluster models and ab initio methods. Adsorption in aqueous solution was modeled with one to five water molecules around the adsorbing cation. The Cu surface was described with Cu10 and Cu18 cluster models and the computational method was MP2/RECP/6-31+G. The effect of the basis set superposition error (BSSE) was taken into account with counterpoise (CP) correction, and the accuracy of HF-level results was examined. The interactions between Na+ and the Cu surface were found to be primarily electrostatic, and the energy differences among the different adsorption sites were small. The largest CP-corrected MP2 adsorption energy for the Cu18 cluster was -188 kJ/mol. When water molecules were added around it, Na+ receded from the Cu surface and finally was surrounded totally by the water molecules. The interactions between Cu+ and the Cu surface were dominated by orbital interactions, and Cu+ preferred to adsorb on sites where it could bind to more than one surface atom. The largest CP-corrected MP2 adsorption energy for the Cu18 cluster was -447 kJ/mol. Adding water molecules around it did not cause Cu+ to draw away from the surface, but instead the water molecules began to form hydrogen bonds with one another. The magnitude of BSSE was substantial in most cases. CP corrections did not, however, have a significant impact on the relative trends among the interaction energies.

3-phenyl-propynenitrile (PPN) adsorbs on Cu(111) in a hexagonal network of molecular trimers formed through intermolecular interaction of the cyano group of one molecule with the aromatic ring of its neighbor. Heptamers of trimers coalesce into interlocking pinwheel-shaped structures that, by percolating across islands of the original trimer coverage, create the appearance of gear chains. Density functional theory aids in identifying substrate stress associated with the chemisorption of PPN's acetylene group as the cause of this transition.

Sulfur, a pollutant known to poison fuel‐cell electrodes, generally comes from S‐containing species such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The S‐containing species become adsorbed on a metal electrode and leave atomic S strongly bound to the metal surface. This surface sulfur is completely removed typically by oxidation with O2 into gaseous SO2. According to our DFT calculations, the oxidation of sulfur at 0.25 ML surface sulfur coverage on pure Pt(111) and Ni(111) metal surfaces is exothermic. The barriers to the formation of SO2 are 0.41 and 1.07 eV, respectively. Various metals combined to form bimetallic surfaces are reported to tune the catalytic capabilities toward some reactions. Our results show that it is more difficult to remove surface sulfur from a Ni@Pt(111) surface with reaction barrier 1.86 eV for SO2 formation than from a Pt@Ni(111) surface (0.13 eV). This result is in good agreement with the statement that bimetallic surfaces could demonstrate more or less activity than to pure metal surfaces by comparing electronic and structural effects. Furthermore, by calculating the reaction free energies we found that the sulfur oxidation reaction on the Pt@Ni(111) surface exhibits the best spontaneity of SO2 desorption at either room temperature or high temperatures.

To better understand the nature of alkyl intermediates often invoked in reactions involving hydrocarbon reactants and products, the adsorption of linear and branched C(1)-C(4) alkyls on Cu(111) at 1/4 ML and 1/9 ML coverages was studied using density functional theory. The adsorption energy and site preference are found to be coverage-dependent, and both direct alkyl-alkyl interactions and changes in the Cu electronic structure play a role in these trends. It was found that methyl strongly prefers the hollow sites, the branched alkyls strongly prefer the top site, and the linear C(2)-C(4) alkyls have weak site preferences that change with coverage. To explain these differences, rationalize alkyl adsorption trends, and predict the binding energy of other alkyls, a simple model was developed in which the binding energy is fit as a linear function of the number of C-Cu and C-H-Cu interactions as well as the C-H bond energy in the corresponding alkane. Site preference can be understood as a compromise between C-Cu interactions and C-H-Cu interactions. Density of states analysis was used to gain a molecular-orbital understanding of the bonding of alkyls to Cu(111).

We investigate the binding site of solvated electrons in amorphous D(2)O clusters and D(2)O wetting layers adsorbed on Cu(111) by means of two-photon photoelectron (2PPE) spectroscopy. On the basis of different interactions of bulk- or surface-bound solvated electrons with rare gas atoms, titration experiments using Xe overlayers reveal the location of the electron solvation sites. In the case of flat clusters with a height of 2-4 bilayers adsorbed on Cu(111), solvated electrons are found to reside at the ice-vacuum interface, whereas a bulk character is found for solvated electrons in wetting layers. Furthermore, time-resolved experiments are performed to determine the origin of the transition between these different solvation sites with increasing D(2)O coverage. We employ an empirical model calculation to analyse the rate of electron transfer back to the substrate and the energetic stabilization of the solvated electrons, which allows further insight into the binding site for clusters. We find that the solvated electrons reside at the edges of the clusters. Therefore, we attribute the transition from surface- to bulk-solvation to the coalescence of the clusters to a closed ice film occurring at a nominal coverage of 2-3 BL, while the distance of the binding sites to the metal-ice interface is maintained.

We present a Molecular Dynamics (MD) study based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations for H(2) interacting with a Pd-Cu(111) surface alloy for low Pd coverages, Θ(Pd). Our results show, in line with recent experimental data, that single isolated Pd atoms evaporated on Cu(111) significantly increase the reactivity of the otherwise inert pure Cu surface. On top of substitutional Pd atoms in the Pd-Cu(111) surface alloy, the activation energy barrier for H(2) dissociation is smaller than the lowest one found on Cu(111) by a factor of two: 0.25 eV vs. 0.46 eV. Also in agreement with experiments, our DFT-MD calculations show that a large fraction of the dissociating H atoms efficiently spillover from Pd (i.e. the active sites), thanks to their extra kinetic energy due to the ~0.50 eV chemisorption exothermicity. Still, our DFT-MD calculations predict a dissociative sticking probability for low energy H(2) molecules that is much smaller than the estimated value from scanning tunneling microscopy experiments. Thus, further theoretical and experimental investigations are required for a complete understanding of H(2) dissociation on low-Θ(Pd) Pd-Cu(111) surface alloys.

The self-assembly of l-tryptophan on Cu(111) is investigated by an ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at 4.4 K. When deposited onto the substrate at around 120 K with a coverage of 0.1 monolayer, molecular trimers, tetramers, hexamers, and chains coexist on Cu(111). Then almost all molecules self-assemble into chiral hexamers after being annealed at room temperature. When increasing molecular coverage to the full layer, a new type of chain is observed on the surface. Based on the high-resolution STM images at sub-molecular level, we suggest that the l-tryptophan molecules are present in neutral, zwitterionic or anionic states in these structures.
