Replica Symmetry Breaking in an Axial Model of Quadrupolar Glass

We investigate the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) in a neighborhood of the instability point of the replica-symmetric solution in the axial quadrupolar glass model. We show that the solution with the first-stage RSB is stable against the subsequent RSB. Although there is no reflection symmetry, the first-stage RSB solution continuously bifurcates from the replica-symmetric one. This implies that our model does not belong to either of the two classes into which spin glasses are usually divided.     

Self-Similar Solutions to a Kinetic Model for Grain Growth

We prove the existence of self-similar solutions to the Fradkov model for two-dimensional grain growth, which consists of an infinite number of nonlocally coupled transport equations for the number densities of grains with given area and number of neighbors (topological class). For the proof we introduce a finite maximal topological class and study an appropriate upwind discretization of the time-dependent problem in self-similar variables. We first show that the resulting finite-dimensional dynamical system admits nontrivial steady states. We then let the discretization parameter tend to zero and prove that the steady states converge to a compactly supported self-similar solution for a Fradkov model with finitely many equations. In a third step we let the maximal topology class tend to infinity and obtain self-similar solutions to the original system that decay exponentially. Finally, we use the upwind discretization to compute self-similar solutions numerically.

On Solutions of Ordinary Differential Equations Arising from a Model of Crystal Growth

The properties of the solutions of the equations φ′″ + φ′ = ?e^φ and φ′″ + φ′ = 1/(2φ) in the complex plane are discussed. Both equations have Stokes phenomena as the imaginary axis is crossed. The Stokes multiplier of the subdominant term in each case is accurately calculated by transforming the equation into an integral equation by using a Laplace integral. The existence and uniqueness of the solutions of these integral equations are also discussed.

Breaking the Symmetry in a Car-Following Model

A wide class of microscopic car-following traffic models deals with a system of ODEs describing N cars driving on a circular highway. The symmetry of the road naturally leads to (quasi-)stationary solutions and to an analysis of their stability. Breaking this symmetry with small perturbations we show the existence of a branch of some special solutions that occur instead of the stationary points. Exact Solutions of Compressible Flow Equations with Spherical Symmetry

In this paper, we construct spherically symmetric solutions of the equations of compressible flow, which are important in the theory of explosion waves in air, water, and other media. Following McVittie [ 1 ], we write a general solution form, in terms of velocity potential, as a product of a function of time and a function of a similarity variable. First, we find solutions to the equations of motion and continuity without reference to adiabatic or isentropic relation. These solutions are quite general and can be applied to nonadiabatic motions, such as the motions of interstellar gas clouds that lose energy by radiation. All the solutions found by McVittie [ 1 ] have linear velocity profile with respect to distance. We introduce a nonlinear form of the velocity function containing an arbitrary function of the similarity variable. Adiabatic conditions lead to a second-order ODE, which we discuss in some detail. We relate our work to the earlier investigations of Taylor [ 2 ], McVittie [ 1 ], and Keller [ 3 ].

On the Solutions of the Generalized Reaction-Diffusion Model for Bacterial Colony

In this paper, the Adomian’s decomposition method has been developed to yield approximate solution of the reaction-diffusion model of fractional order which describe the evolution of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis, which grows on the surface of thin agar plates. The fractional derivatives are described in the Caputo sense. The method introduces a promising tool for solving many linear and nonlinear fractional differential equations. In these schemes, the solution takes the form of a convergent series with easily computable components. Numerical results show that the approach is easy to implement and accurate when applied to partial differential equations of fractional order.
