A (photo-polymerizable liquid crystal (LC) monomer/LCs/chiral dopant/photoinitiator) mixture with a smectic A (SmA)-chiral nematic (N*) phase transition was sandwiched between two ITO glass substrates which were not subjected to any surface orientation treatment. When an electric field-induced homeotropically oriented SmA phase of the mixture was irradiated with UV light, an oriented liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) network was formed upon photo-polymerization of the LC monomer. Then, a (homeotropically oriented LCP network/LCs/chiral dopant) composite with a SmA-N* phase transition was prepared. A focal-conic texture appeared in the heat-induced N* phase of the composite upon heating from the transparent state of the homeotropically oriented SmA phase; the focal-conic texture exhibited strong light scattering. Upon cooling the composite to the SmA phase, this phase was again homeotropically oriented due to the strong intermolecular interaction between the LC molecules and the homeotropically oriented LCP network. Thus, the transparent state of the SmA phase and the light scattering state of the N* phase occurred reversibly upon cooling and heating, accompanied by the thermal SmA-N* phase transition.  相似文献

The light switching characteristics induced by a thermal smectic A (SmA) ? chiral nematic (N*) phase transition were studied for homeotropically aligned [smectic A liquid crystal (SmA-LC)/nematic liquid crystal (N-LC)/chiral dopant] and [side chain type smectic A liquid crystalline polymer (SmA-LCP)/N-LC/chiral dopant] composites. A drastic change from a transparent SmA phase to a light-scattering N* phase occurred in both composites upon heating. In the case of the heat-induced N* phase for the (SmA-LC/N-LC/chiral dopant) composite, the N* phase exhibited weak light scattering due to formation of a scroll texture. On the other hand, in the case of the heat-induced N* phase for the (SmA-LCP/N-LC/chiral dopant) composite, the N* phase showed strong light scattering due to formation of a focalconic texture. The existence of a SmA-LCP was responsible for a higher contrast ratio between the transparent SmA phase and the light scattering N* phase for the (SmA-LCP/ N-LC/chiral dopant) composite than for the (SA-LCN/N-LC/chiral dopant) composite.  相似文献

Thermo-recording in a [side chain type smectic A liquid crystal polymer (SmA-LCP)/nematic liquid crystal (N-LC)/chiral dopant/dichroic dye] composite has been realized by using 2mW of power from a He-Ne laser. The laser irradiation-induced phase transitions of smectic A (SmA) → chiral nematic (N*) → SmA formed the dominant thermo-recording mechanism in the composite. Thermo-recording in the (SmA-LCP/N-LC/chiral dopant/dichroic dye) composite exhibited a higher contrast when compared with the non-polymeric (SmA-LC)/N-LC/chiral dopant/dichroic dye composite.  相似文献

Three series of chiral liquid crystalline dimers were investigated, having a cholesteryl and a cyanobiphenylyl, butoxybiphenylyl or hexyloxybiphenylyl group connected to a variable alkyl spacer through ether linkages. Their properties were compared with those of the corresponding ester derivatives. The phase behaviour of compounds with ether and ester linkages is comparable, showing N* and SmA phases. The melting points of the compounds with ether linkages are in the same range as those of the ester compounds, but the liquid crystal transition temperatures are lower. The smectic layer spacings and smectic ordering properties are also similar. The cyanobiphenylyl compounds have an interdigitated SmA layer structure, which shows a small odd-even effect with spacer parity. The alkoxybiphenylyl compounds have a monolayer SmA phase for short spacers and an intercalated SmA phase for longer spacers. The selective reflection wavelengths of the chiral nematic phase of the ether compounds are lower than those of the corresponding ester compounds. The transition from N* to interdigitated or monolayer SmA is accompanied by a strong increase in the selective reflection wavelength, indicative of an intermediate TGB phase. This is absent for the transition from N* to intercalated SmA.  相似文献

The properties of synthesized side‐chain liquid crystalline polymer (SCLCP)/liquid crystal (LC)/chiral dopant composites having a chiral nematic (N*) phase at room temperature were investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and a UV/VIS/NIR spectrophotometer. The composite exhibited a planar texture after it was filled into cells under homogeneous boundary conditions and it was transparent. When an electric field was applied to the composite, a focal conic texture was formed and the composite became light scattering. After the electric field was turned off, the light‐scattering state remained stable for some time, i.e. the light‐scattering state exhibited a memory effect. The focal conic texture changed into the planar texture when the composite was heated and the composite became transparent again. Therefore, the composite had electrically induced and thermally erased properties. The SCLCP had some influence on the memory effect and on the thermo‐electro‐optical properties of the composite.  相似文献

The phase transition from an 'isotropic smectic phase' to the proper SmA* phase in a new photochromic chiral copolymer can be prevented by illumination with non-polarized white light of low intensity. On the basis of the effect observed, a novel photorecording technique is suggested, so that the shadow image appears as a white scattering texture of the SmA* phase on the background of the transparent, optically isotropic TGB A-like phase. Optical, DSC, and X-ray studies of the polymer are reported, the photorecording set-up is described, and the first written photoimage is presented.  相似文献

Several series of recently synthesized chiral azobenzene liquid crystals exhibit transitions driven by both illumination and temperature: some compounds can be 'melted' from the SmC* phase to the isotropic phase by increasing illumination only; according to the phase sequences, SmA, TGBA, N*, and blue phases are also involved in such behaviour. The observed phenomena are reversible and transition temperatures are reproducible in identical light conditions. Some specific transitions have been studied. Their temperatures can be lowered to 10 degrees below the dark transition values by increasing the illumination of samples. Under illumination, those transitions exhibit first order behaviour.  相似文献

A new series of non-symmetric chiral isoflavone-based liquid crystalline dimers, α-(2-methylbutyl-4′-(4″-phenyloxy)benzoate)-ω-(3-(4′-decyloxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one-7-oxy)alkanes, with 3–12 carbon atoms in the alkyloxy spacer, have been synthesised. A pronounced odd–even effect for the phase transition temperatures upon varying the spacer length was observed. The short dimers exhibited monolayer smectic A (SmA) and smectic C (SmC*) phases while for longer homologues a chiral nematic (N*) phase was found. The temperature range of the nematic phase was broadened with elongation of the alkyl spacer. Stabilisation of the nematic phase resulted from competition between the monolayer and intercalated smectic structures. The SmA–SmC* phase transition was second order for all studied compounds with a cross over to the de Vries type behaviour for the shortest homologue.  相似文献

Chiral non-symmetric dimeric liquid crystals consisting of a cholesteryl ester moiety as chiral entity and a biphenyl aromatic core, interconnected through n-butyl (C4) or n-pentyl (C5) parity alkylene spacers, have been synthesized and investigated for their liquid crystalline properties. All the dimers exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. The first member of the dimers having the C4 central spacer exhibit only the chiral nematic (N*) mesophase, while the higher homologues also show smectic A (SmA) and twist grain boundary (TGB) mesophases. The dimers of the other series containing the C5 central spacer also have stable SmA, TGB and N* mesophases, except for the first which does not show the TGB phase. Both series of compounds show a weak odd-even effect with terminal alkyl chain substitution, while the spacer length has a marked influence on the phase transition temperatures.  相似文献

We studied the electro-optic and dielectric properties of three pure ferroelectric liquid crystal materials (C10, C11 and C12) of the same series exhibiting cholesteric (N*), smectic A (SmA) and chiral smectic C (SmC*) phases. From electro-optic investigations, the tilt angle and spontaneous polarisation were determined as a function of temperature. In the dielectric measurements carried out without a dc bias field, we studied the soft-mode relaxation in the SmA phase. From experimental data and using the results of a Landau model, we evaluated the soft-mode rotational viscosity and the electroclinic coefficient in the SmA phase. A soft-mode like mechanism was also observed in the N* phase for compounds with shorter chains (C10 and C11). This relaxation process is not detected for the homologue with a longer chain (C12). The observation of this mechanism is related to smectic order fluctuations within N* phase whose amplitude is increased when approaching the SmC*–SmA–N* multicritical point.  相似文献

A photoinduced phase transition and helix untwisting in a new liquid crystal forming the SmC* phase were studied in detail. The compound consists of a cinnamoyl photosensitive fragment with C?=?C double bond capable of photoisomerisation and photocycloaddition. It was shown that ultraviolet (UV) irradiation (365 nm) induces an extreme decrease in phase transitions temperatures (SmC*–SmA*, SmA*–N*, N*–I). Vertically aligned samples in the SmC* phase cause selective light reflection in the visible spectral range. The light action results in a noticeable helix untwisting that causes a shift in the selective light reflection peak to the long-wavelength spectral region. The temperature dependence of spontaneous polarisation P s was measured and it was found that UV irradiation induces a decrease in the values of P s. Photo-optical phenomena taking place in the liquid crystal are attributed to the formation of photoproducts having low anisometry, which disrupts mesophases.  相似文献

We present the experimental evidence and theoretical studies of the para–ferroelectric phase transition in the chiral liquid crystal C12HH. The investigated compound presents a large SmC* range. Both microscopic observation and dielectric measurements show thermal hysteresis and coexistence phases at paraelectric (SmA)–ferroelectric (SmC*) phase transition. The thermal hysteresis is analysed in samples with different planar cell thickness. The SmA–SmC* phase transition under electric field is also investigated. Finally, the Landau free energy density is used to analyse the experimental measurements, showing a satisfactory agreement with experimental data.  相似文献

The preparation is reported of particles of photopolymerisable monomer/chiral dopant composites with a crystalline (Cr)‐chiral nematic (N*) phase transition. By mixing particles with different pitches of the N* phase in the Cr phase and crosslinking the liquid crystal (LC) monomer molecules by photopolymerisation in the planarly oriented N* phase, an N*‐LC composite film with a non‐uniform pitch distribution was obtained. Experimental results show that the bandwidth of the reflection spectrum and the location of reflection band of the composite films can be controlled accurately by controlling the pitch lengths of the N* phase of the particles. Effects of polymerisation temperature and UV intensity on the non‐uniform pitch distribution of N*‐LC composite films were investigated.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of novel chiral Schiff's base dimers containing the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring are reported. The length of the terminal S-alkyl chain has been varied. All the compounds synthesised were thermally stable and exhibited enantiotropic mesomorphism, showing either SmC*–SmA–TGB–N*–BP or SmC*–SmA phase sequence.  相似文献

We report on wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements along the smectic-A to chiral ferroelectric smectic-C* phase transition of the liquid crystal SCE9 and its mixture with maghemite magnetic nanoparticles of typical dimension 20 nm. The temperature profiles of the tilt angle are fitted by an extended mean-field model. Neither pre-transitional order effects nor variations in the SmA layer thickness are observed, indicating a rather negligible influence of these nanoparticles upon the molecular orientation at the smectic-A to smectic-C* phase transition of SCE9. These results are very different from what was observed for smaller CdSe nanoparticles (3.5 nm) where both a dilation of the smectic layers in the SmA phase and a crossover behaviour for the smectic-A to smectic-C* transition away from tricriticality have been observed for analogous concentrations.  相似文献
