On sets with Baire property in topological spaces

Steinhaus [9] prove that if a set A has a positive Lebesgue measure in the line then its distance set contains an interval. He obtained even stronger forms of this result in [9], which are concerned with mutual distances between points in an infinite sequence of sets. Similar theorems in the case we replace distance by mutual ratio were established by Bose-Majumdar [1]. In the present paper, we endeavour to obtain some results related to sets with Baire property in locally compact topological spaces, particular cases of which yield the Baire category analogues of the above results of Steinhaus [9] and their corresponding form for ratios by Bose-Majumdar [1].     

A characterization of Baire one functions of two variables

We show that every Baire class one real-valued function f of two real variables is the pointwise limit of a sequence of continuous, piecewise linear functions, all of whose vertices lie on the graph of f.     

The product of a Baire space with a hereditarily Baire metric space is Baire

In this paper we prove that the product of a Baire space with a metrizable hereditarily Baire space is again a Baire space. This answers a recent question of J. Chaber and R. Pol.

     

Gauges of Baire class one functions

Let K be a compact metric space and be a bounded Baire class one function. We proved that for any ε>0 there exists an upper semicontinuous positive function δ of f with finite oscillation index and |f(x)−f(y)|<ε whenever d(x,y)<min{δ(x),δ(y)}.     

The weak Dirichlet problem for Baire functions

A Moore space with a -base which cannot be densely embedded in any Moore space with the Baire property

The author answers a question raised in the literature about twenty five years ago and raised again more recently in Open Problems in Topology, by G. M. Reed, concerning the conjecture that every Moore space with a -discrete -base can be densely embedded in a Moore space having the Baire property. Even though closely related results have made this conjecture seem likely to be true, the author shows that, surprisingly, the conjecture is false.

     

The Wijsman hyperspace of a metric hereditarily Baire space is Baire

In this paper, we show that the Wijsman hyperspace of a metric hereditarily Baire space is Baire. This solves a recent question posed by Zsilinszky.     

Distances to spaces of Baire one functions

Given a metric space X and a Banach space (E, ||·||) we use an index of σ-fragmentability for maps to estimate the distance of f to the space B ₁(X, E) of Baire one functions from X into (E, ||·||). When X is Polish we use our estimations for these distances to give a quantitative version of the well known Rosenthal’s result stating that in the pointwise relatively countably compact sets are pointwise relatively compact. A local duality principle for the Baire classes of functions

A local dual of a Banach space X is a closed subspace of X^∗ that satisfies the properties that the principle of local reflexivity assigns to X as a subspace of X∗∗. We show that, for every ordinal 1?α?ω₁, the spaces Bα[0,1] of bounded Baire functions of class α are local dual spaces of the space M[0,1] of all Borel measures. As a consequence, we derive that each annihilator Bα^⊥[0,1] is the kernel of a norm-one projection.     

On Baire Measurable Homomorphisms of Quotients of the Additive Group of the Reals

The quotient ℝ/G of the additive group of the reals modulo a countable subgroup G does not admit nontrivial Baire measurable automorphisms.     

On some new ideals on the Cantor and Baire spaces

We define and investigate some new ideals of subsets of the Cantor space and the Baire space. We show that combinatorial properties of these ideals can be described by the splitting and reaping cardinal numbers. We show that there exist perfect Luzin sets for these ideals on the Baire space.

On a fragment of the universal Baire property for sets

There is a well-known global equivalence between sets having the universal Baire property, two-step generic absoluteness, and the closure of the universe under the sharp operation. In this note, we determine the exact consistency strength of sets being -cc-universally Baire, which is below . In a model obtained, there is a set which is weakly -universally Baire but not -universally Baire.

     

Continuous transformation of Baire measures into Lebesgue measure

A recent result by Wulbert on the existence of continuous functions with measure zero level sets is slightly extended and its proof is considerably simplified. As a by-product, a criterion is established for a Baire measure to allow a continuous transformation into Lebesgue measure.
