An M[X]/G/1 retrial G-queue with single vacation and unreliable server is investigated in this paper. Arrivals of positive customers form a compound Poisson process, and positive customers receive service immediately if the server is free upon their arrivals; Otherwise, they may enter a retrial orbit and try their luck after a random time interval. The arrivals of negative customers form a Poisson process. Negative customers not only remove the customer being in service, but also make the server under repair. The server leaves for a single vacation as soon as the system empties. In this paper, we analyze the ergodical condition of this model. By applying the supplementary variables method, we obtain the steady-state solutions for both queueing measures and reliability quantities.

An M/G/1 retrial queue with two-phase service and feedback is studied in this paper, where the server is subject to starting failures and breakdowns during service. Primary customers get in the system according to a Poisson process, and they will receive service immediately if the server is available upon arrival. Otherwise, they will enter a retrial orbit and are queued in the orbit in accordance with a first-come-first-served (FCFS) discipline. Customers are allowed to balk and renege at particular times. All customers demand the first "essential"service, whereas only some of them demand the second "multi-optional" service. It is assumed that the retrial time, service time and repair time of the server are all arbitrarily distributed. The necessary and sufficient condition for the system stability is derived. Using a supplementary variable method, the steady-state solutions for some queueing and reliability measures of the system are obtained.

We consider a multi-server retrial queue with the Batch Markovian Arrival Process (BMAP). The servers are identical and independent of each other. The service time distribution of a customer by a server is of the phase (PH) type. If a group of primary calls meets idle servers the primary calls occupy the corresponding number of servers. If the number of idle servers is insufficient the rest of calls go to the orbit of unlimited size and repeat their attempts to get service after exponential amount of time independently of each other. Busy servers are subject to breakdowns and repairs. The common flow of breakdowns is the MAP. An event of this flow causes a failure of any busy server with equal probability. When a server fails the repair period starts immediately. This period has PH type distribution and does not depend on the repair time of other broken-down servers and the service time of customers occupying the working servers. A customer whose service was interrupted goes to the orbit with some probability and leaves the system with the supplementary probability. We derive the ergodicity condition and calculate the stationary distribution and the main performance characteristics of the system. Illustrative numerical examples are presented.

This paper deals with an N policy M/G/1 queueing system with a single removable and unreliable server whose arrivals form a Poisson process. Service times, repair times, and startup times are assumed to be generally distributed. When the queue length reaches N(N ? 1), the server is immediately turned on but is temporarily unavailable to serve the waiting customers. The server needs a startup time before providing service until there are no customers in the system. We analyze various system performance measures and investigate some designated known expected cost function per unit time to determine the optimal threshold N at a minimum cost. Sensitivity analysis is also studied.

This paper presents a multiserver retrial queueing system with servers kept apart, thereby rendering it impossible for one to know the status (idle/busy) of the others. Customers proceeding to one channel will have to go to orbit if the server in it is busy and retry after some time to some channel, not necessarily the one already tried. Each orbital customer, independently of others, chooses the server randomly according to some specified probability distribution. Further this distribution is identical for all customers. We assume that the same ‘orbit’ is used by all retrial customers, between repeated attempts, to access the servers. We derive the system state probability distribution under Poisson arrival process of external customers, exponentially distributed service times and linear retrial rates to access the servers. Several system state characteristics are obtained and numerical illustrations provided.

We consider a single server retrial queue with waiting places in service area and three classes of customers subject to the server breakdowns and repairs. When the server is unavailable, the arriving class-1 customer is queued in the priority queue with infinite capacity whereas class-2 customer enters the retrial group. The class-3 customers which are also called negative customers do not receive service. If the server is found serving a customer, the arriving class-3 customer breaks the server down and simultaneously deletes the customer under service. The failed server is sent to repair immediately and after repair it is assumed as good as new. We study the ergodicity of the embedded Markov chains and their stationary distributions. We obtain the steady-state solutions for both queueing measures and reliability quantities. Moreover, we investigate the stochastic decomposition law, the busy period of the system and the virtual waiting times. Finally, an application to cellular mobile networks is provided and the effects of various parameters on the system performance are analyzed numerically.

This paper examines an M[x]/G/1 queueing system with a randomized vacation policy and at most J vacations. Whenever the system is empty, the server immediately takes a vacation. If there is at least one customer found waiting in the queue upon returning from a vacation, the server will be immediately activated for service. Otherwise, if no customers are waiting for service at the end of a vacation, the server either remains idle with probability p or leaves for another vacation with probability 1 − p. This pattern continues until the number of vacations taken reaches J. If the system is empty by the end of the Jth vacation, the server becomes idle in the system. Whenever one or more customers arrive at server idle state, the server immediately starts providing service for the arrivals. Assume that the server may meet an unpredictable breakdown according to a Poisson process and the repair time has a general distribution. For such a system, we derive the distributions of important system characteristics, such as system size distribution at a random epoch and at a departure epoch, system size distribution at busy period initiation epoch, the distributions of idle period, busy period, etc. Finally, a cost model is developed to determine the joint suitable parameters (pJ) at a minimum cost, and some numerical examples are presented for illustrative purpose.

This paper considers the bi-level control of an M/G/1 queueing system, in which an un-reliable server operates N policy with a single vacation and an early startup. The server takes a vacation of random length when he finishes serving all customers in the system (i.e., the system is empty). Upon completion of the vacation, the server inspects the number of customers waiting in the queue. If the number of customers is greater than or equal to a predetermined threshold m, the server immediately performs a startup time; otherwise, he remains dormant in the system and waits until m or more customers accumulate in the queue. After the startup, if there are N or more customers waiting for service, the server immediately begins serving the waiting customers. Otherwise the server is stand-by in the system and waits until the accumulated number of customers reaches or exceeds N. Further, it is assumed that the server breaks down according to a Poisson process and his repair time has a general distribution. We obtain the probability generating function in the system through the decomposition property and then derive the system characteristics

In this paper, we consider a Geo/Geo/1 retrial queue with non-persistent customers and working vacations. The server works at a lower service rate in a working vacation period. Assume that the customers waiting in the orbit request for service with a constant retrial rate, if the arriving retrial customer finds the server busy, the customer will go back to the orbit with probability q (0≤q≤1), or depart from the system immediately with probability $\bar{q}=1-q$ . Based on the necessary and sufficient condition for the system to be stable, we develop the recursive formulae for the stationary distribution by using matrix-geometric solution method. Furthermore, some performance measures of the system are calculated and an average cost function is also given. We finally illustrate the effect of the parameters on the performance measures by some numerical examples.

Bulk-arrival queues with single servers that provide bulk service are widespread in the real world, e.g., elevators in buildings, people-movers in amusement parks, air-cargo delivery planes, and automated guided vehicles. Much of the literature on this topic focusses on the development of the theory for waiting time and number in such queues. We develop the theory for the number stranded, i.e., the number of customers left behind after each service, in queues of the M/G/1 form, where there is single server, the arrival process is Poisson, the service is of a bulk nature, and the service time is a random variable. For the homogenous Poisson case, in our model the service time can have any given distribution. For the non-homogenous Poisson arrivals, due to a technicality, we assume that the service time is a discrete random variable. Our analysis is not only useful for performance analysis of bulk queues but also in designing server capacity when the aim is to reduce the frequency of stranding. Past attempts in the literature to study this problem have been hindered by the use of Laplace transforms, which pose severe numerical difficulties. Our approach is based on using a discrete-time Markov chain, which bypasses the need for Laplace transforms and is numerically tractable. We perform an extensive numerical analysis of our models to demonstrate their usefulness. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt in the literature to study this problem in a comprehensive manner providing numerical solutions.

We consider a discrete-time Geo/G/1 retrial queue in which the retrial time has a general distribution and the server, after each service completion, begins a process of search in order to find the following customer to be served. We study the Markov chain underlying the considered queueing system and its ergodicity condition. We find the generating function of the number of customers in the orbit and in the system. We derive the stochastic decomposition law and as an application we give bounds for the proximity between the steady-state distributions for our queueing system and its corresponding standard system. Also, we develop recursive formulae for calculating the steady-state distribution of the orbit and system sizes. Besides, we prove that the M/G/1 retrial queue with general retrial times can be approximated by our corresponding discrete-time system. Finally, we give numerical examples to illustrate the effect of the parameters on several performance characteristics.

A bulk-arrival single server queueing system with second multi-optional service and unreliable server is studied in this paper. Customers arrive in batches according to a homogeneous Poisson process, all customers demand the first "essential" service, whereas only some of them demand the second "multi-optional" service. The first service time and the second service all have general distribution and they are independent. We assume that the server has a service-phase dependent, exponentially distributed life time as well as a servicephase dependent, generally distributed repair time. Using a supplementary variable method, we obtain the transient and the steady-state solutions for both queueing and reliability measures of interest.

In this paper we consider a single server retrial queue where the server is subject to breakdowns and repairs. New customers arrive at the service station according to a Poisson process and demand i.i.d. service times. If the server is idle, the incoming customer starts getting served immediately. If the server is busy, the incoming customer conducts a retrial after an exponential amount of time. The retrial customers behave independently of each other. The server stays up for an exponential time and then fails. Repair times have a general distribution. The failure/repair behavior when the server is idle is different from when it is busy. Two different models are considered. In model I, the failed server cannot be occupied and the customer whose service is interrupted has to either leave the system or rejoin the retrial group. In model II, the customer whose service is interrupted by a failure stays at the server and restarts the service when repair is completed. Model II can be handled as a special case of model I. For model I, we derive the stability condition and study the limiting behavior of the system by using the tools of Markov regenerative processes.Visiting from Department of Applied Mathematics, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Cheongryang, Seoul, Korea.

This paper investigates a batch arrival retrial queue with general retrial times, where the server is subject to starting failures and provides two phases of heterogeneous service to all customers under Bernoulli vacation schedules. Any arriving batch finding the server busy, breakdown or on vacation enters an orbit. Otherwise one customer from the arriving batch enters a service immediately while the rest join the orbit. After the completion of two phases of service, the server either goes for a vacation with probability p or may wait for serving the next customer with probability (1 − p). We construct the mathematical model and derive the steady-state distribution of the server state and the number of customers in the system/orbit. Such a model has potential application in transfer model of e-mail system.

An M/G/1 retrial queueing system with additional phase of service and possible preemptive resume service discipline is considered. For an arbitrarily distributed retrial time distribution, the necessary and sufficient condition for the system stability is obtained, assuming that only the customer at the head of the orbit has priority access to the server. The steady-state distributions of the server state and the number of customers in the orbit are obtained along with other performance measures. The effects of various parameters on the system performance are analysed numerically. A general decomposition law for this retrial queueing system is established.

Single server retrial queueing models in which customers arrive according to a batch Poisson process are considered here. An arriving batch, finding the server busy, enters an orbit. Otherwise, one customer from the arriving batch enters for service immediately while the rest join the orbit. The customers from the orbit (the orbital customers) try to reach the server subsequently with the inter-retrial times exponentially distributed. Additionally, at each service completion epoch, two different search mechanisms, that is, type I and type II search, to bring the orbital customers by the system to service, are switched on. Thus, when the server is idle, a competition takes place among primary customers, customers who come by retrial and by two types of searches. The type I search selects a single customer whereas the type II search considers a batch of customers from the orbit. Depending on the maximum size of the batch being considered for service by a type II search, two cases are addressed here. In the first case, no restriction on batch size is assumed, whereas in the second case, maximum size of the batch is restricted to a pre-assigned value. We call the resulting models as model 1 and model 2 respectively. In all service modes other than type II search, only a single customer is qualified for service. Service times of the four types of customers, namely, primary, repeated, and those who come by two types of searches are arbitrarily distributed (with different distributions which are independent of each other). Steady state analysis is performed and stability conditions are established. A control problem for model 2 is considered and numerical illustrations are provided.

We consider a single server retrial queuing model in which customers arrive according to a batch Markovian arrival process. Any arriving batch finding the server busy enters into an orbit. Otherwise one customer from the arriving batch enters into service immediately while the rest join the orbit. The customers from the orbit try to reach the service later and the inter-retrial times are exponentially distributed with intensity depending (generally speaking) on the number of customers on the orbit. Additionally, the search mechanism can be switched-on at the service completion epoch with a known probability (probably depending on the number of customers on the orbit). The duration of the search is random and also probably depending on the number of customers in the orbit. The customer, which is found as the result of the search, enters the service immediately if the server is still idle. Assuming that the service times of the primary and repeated customers are generally distributed (with possibly different distributions), we perform the steady state analysis of the queueing model.
