In this paper, we analyze a discrete-time preemptive resume priority queue. We consider two classes of customers which have to be served, where customers of one class have preemptive resume priority over customers of the other. Both classes contain customers with generally distributed service times. We show that the use of probability generating functions is beneficial for analyzing the system contents and customer delays of both classes. It is shown (theoretically as well as by some practical procedures) how moments and approximate tail probabilities of system contents and customer delays are calculated. The influence of the priority scheduling discipline and the service time distributions on the performance measures is shown by some numerical examples.  相似文献

This paper considers a class of stationary batch-arrival, bulk-service queues with generalized vacations. The system consists of a single server and a waiting room of infinite capacity. Arrivals of customers follow a batch Markovian arrival process. The server is unavailable for occasional intervals of time called vacations, and when it is available, customers are served in groups of fixed size B. For this class of queues, we show that the vector probability generating function of the stationary queue length distribution is factored into two terms, one of which is the vector probability generating function of the conditional queue length distribution given that the server is on vacation. The special case of batch Poisson arrivals is carefully examined, and a new stochastic decomposition formula is derived for the stationary queue length distribution.AMS subject classification: 60K25, 90B22, 60K37  相似文献

The paper deals with the two-class priority M/M/1 system, where the prioritized class-1 customers are served under FCFS preemptive resume discipline and may become impatient during their waiting for service with generally distributed maximal waiting times. The class-2 customers have no impatience. The required mean service times may depend on the class of the customer. As the dynamics of class-1 customers are related to the well analyzed M/M/1+GI system, our aim is to derive characteristics for class-2 customers and for the whole system. The solution of the balance equations for the partial probability generating functions of the detailed system state process is given in terms of the weak solution of a family of boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations, where the latter can be solved explicitly only for particular distributions of the maximal waiting times. By means of this solution formulae for the joint occupancy distribution and for the sojourn and waiting times of class-2 customers are derived generalizing corresponding results recently obtained by Choi et al. in case of deterministic maximal waiting times. The latter case is dealt as an example in our paper.  相似文献

This paper considers a discrete-time priority queueing model with one server and two types (classes) of customers. Class-1 customers have absolute (service) priority over class-2 customers. New customer batches enter the system at the rate of one batch per slot, according to a general independent arrival process, i.e., the batch sizes (total numbers of arrivals) during consecutive time slots are i.i.d. random variables with arbitrary distribution. All customers entering the system during the same time slot (i.e., belonging to the same arrival batch) are of the same type, but customer types may change from slot to slot, i.e., from batch to batch. Specifically, the types of consecutive customer batches are correlated in a Markovian way, i.e., the probability that any batch of customers has type 1 or 2, respectively, depends on the type of the previous customer batch that has entered the system. Such an arrival model allows to vary not only the relative loads of both customer types in the arrival stream, but also the amount of correlation between the types of consecutive arrival batches. The results reveal that the amount of delay differentiation between the two customer classes that can be achieved by the priority mechanism strongly depends on the amount of such interclass correlation (or, class clustering) in the arrival stream. We believe that this phenomenon has been largely overlooked in the priority-scheduling literature.  相似文献

The problem with the FCFS server discipline in discrete-time queueing systems is that it doesn’t actually determine what happens if multiple customers enter the system at the same time, which in the discrete-time paradigm translates into ‘during the same time-slot’. In other words, it doesn’t specify in which order such customers are served. When we consider multiple types of customers, each requiring different service time distributions, the precise order of service even starts to affect quantities such as queue content and delays of arbitrary customers, so specifying this order will be prime. In this paper we study a multi-class discrete-time queueing system with a general independent arrival process and generally distributed service times. The service discipline is FCFS and customers entering during the same time-slot are served in random order. It will be our goal to search for the steady-state distribution of queue content and delays of certain types of customers. If one thinks of the time-slot as a continuous but bounded time period, the random order of service is equivalent to FCFS if different customers have different arrival epochs within this time-slot and if the arrival epochs are independent of customer class. For this reason we propose two distinct ways of analysing; one utilizing permutations, the other considering a slot as a bounded continuous time frame.  相似文献

In this paper we analyze a discrete-time single server queue where the service time equals one slot. The numbers of arrivals in each slot are assumed to be independent and identically distributed random variables. The service process is interrupted by a semi-Markov process, namely in certain states the server is available for service while the server is not available in other states. We analyze both the transient and steady-state models. We study the generating function of the joint probability of queue length, the state and the residual sojourn time of the semi-Markov process. We derive a system of Hilbert boundary value problems for the generating functions. The system of Hilbert boundary value problems is converted to a system of Fredholm integral equations. We show that the system of Fredholm integral equations has a unique solution. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

This paper considers the queue length distribution in a class of FIFO single-server queues with (possibly correlated) multiple arrival streams, where the service time distribution of customers may be different for different streams. It is widely recognized that the queue length distribution in a FIFO queue with multiple non-Poissonian arrival streams having different service time distributions is very hard to analyze, since we have to keep track of the complete order of customers in the queue to describe the queue length dynamics. In this paper, we provide an alternative way to solve the problem for a class of such queues, where arrival streams are governed by a finite-state Markov chain. We characterize the joint probability generating function of the stationary queue length distribution, by considering the joint distribution of the number of customers arriving from each stream during the stationary attained waiting time. Further we provide recursion formulas to compute the stationary joint queue length distribution and the stationary distribution representing from which stream each customer in the queue arrived.  相似文献

In this paper, we analyse the delay of a random customer in a two-class batch-service queueing model with variable server capacity, where all customers are accommodated in a common single-server first-come-first-served queue. The server can only process customers that belong to the same class, so that the size of a batch is determined by the length of a sequence of same-class customers. This type of batch server can be found in telecommunications systems and production environments. We first determine the steady state partial probability generating function of the queue occupancy at customer arrival epochs. Using a spectral decomposition technique, we obtain the steady state probability generating function of the delay of a random customer. We also show that the distribution of the delay of a random customer corresponds to a phase-type distribution. Finally, some numerical examples are given that provide further insight in the impact of asymmetry and variance in the arrival process on the number of customers in the system and the delay of a random customer.  相似文献

We consider a discrete-time queueing system in which the arriving customers decide with a certain probability to be served under a LCFS-PR discipline and with complementary probability to join the queue. The arrivals are assumed to be geometrical and the service times are arbitrarily distributed. The service times of the expelled customers are independent of their previous ones. We carry out an extensive analysis of the system developing recursive formulae and generating functions for the steady-state distribution of the number of customers in the system and obtaining also recursive formulae and generating functions for the stationary distribution of the busy period and sojourn time as well as some performance measures.  相似文献

This paper introduces a new priority mechanism in discrete-time queueing systems that compromises between first-come-first-served (FCFS) and head-of-line priority. In this scheduling discipline—which we dubbed slot-bound priority—customers of different priority classes entering the system during the same time-slot are served in order of their respective priority class. Customers entering during different slots are served on a FCFS basis. In this paper we study the delay in an N-class discrete-time queueing system under slot-bound priority. General independent arrivals and class-specific general service time distributions are assumed. Expressions for the probability generating function of the delay of a random type-j customer are derived, from which the respective moments are easily obtained. The tail behaviour of these distributions is analyzed as well, and some numerical examples show the effect slot-bound priority can have on the performance measures.  相似文献

We consider a dynamic control problem for a GI/GI/1+GI queue with multiclass customers. The customer classes are distinguished by their interarrival time, service time, and abandonment time distributions. There is a cost c k >0 for every class k∈{1,2,…,N} customer that abandons the queue before receiving service. The objective is to minimize average cost by dynamically choosing which customer class the server should next serve each time the server becomes available (and there are waiting customers from at least two classes). It is not possible to solve this control problem exactly, and so we formulate an approximating Brownian control problem. The Brownian control problem incorporates the entire abandonment distribution of each customer class. We solve the Brownian control problem under the assumption that the abandonment distribution for each customer class has an increasing failure rate. We then interpret the solution to the Brownian control problem as a control for the original dynamic scheduling problem. Finally, we perform a simulation study to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed control.  相似文献

On M/M/1 queues with a smart machine   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper discusses a class of M/M/1 queueing models in which the service time of a customer depends on the number of customers served in the current busy period. It is particularly suited for applications in which the server has kind of learning ability and warms up gradually. We present a simple and computationally tractable scheme which recursively determines the stationary probabilities of the queue length. Other performance measures such as the Laplace transform of the busy period are also obtained. For the firstN exceptional services model which can be considered as a special case of our model, we derive a closed-formula for the generating function of the stationary queue length distribution. Numerical examples are also provided.  相似文献

An M/GI/1 queueing model is considered, where the arrival rate to the facility is a continuous variable which depends, in the steady state, upon the average congestion at the facility. The population of customers arriving to the facility is partitioned into several classes dependent on the ratio of the value of time to the reward due to service but are served according to first-in-first-out rule. It is shown that under the privately optimal behavior of the individuals the facility will be dominated by the class with the highest net reward per value of time. The publicly optimal policy which maximizes the net reward due to service, after costs of waiting are deducted, is shown either to admit only a single class of customers to the facility, thus discriminating against the other classes or to be indifferent to the mix of classes. The class chosen for admission may not be the class which would have privately dominated the facility. When the expected delay experienced at the facility is fixed, a policy of tolls and rebates for the customers is obtained that will assure equal access to the facility for all customers irrespective of their classes. It is shown that the publicly optimal policy, under the condition of fixed aggregate arrival rate to the facility, is shown to be deversified. The optimal arrival rates desired by a single class are derived for two cases. When the proportions of arrivals from the classes are fixed, the aggregate arrival rate desired by a class is shown to be not greater than the equilibrium rate for the individuals from that class. Alternatively, when the aggregate arrival rate is fixed, conditions are obtained under which a class will prefer usage of the facility by several classes to its own domination.  相似文献

We consider a risk process with stochastic return on investments and we are interested in expected present value of all dividends paid until ruin occurs when the company uses a simple barrier strategy, i.e. when it pays dividends whenever its surplus reaches a level b. It is shown that given the barrier b, this expected value can be found by solving a boundary value problem for an integro-differential equation. The solution is then found in two special cases; when return on investments is constant and the surplus generating process is compound Poisson with exponentially distributed claims, and also when both return on investments as well as the surplus generating process are Brownian motions with drift. Also in this latter case we are able to find the optimal barrier b*, i.e. the barrier that gives the highest expected present value of dividends. Parallell with this we treat the problem of finding the Laplace transform of the distribution of the time to ruin when a barrier strategy is employed, noting that the probability of eventual ruin is 1 in this case. The paper ends with a short discussion of the same problems when a time dependent barrier is employed.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the steady-state behavior of a discrete-time single-server queueing system with correlated service times and server vacations. The vacation times of the server are independent and geometrically distributed, and their durations are integral multiples of slot duration. The customers are served one at a time under discrete-time Markovian service process. The new service process starts with the initial phase distribution independent of the path followed by the previous service process when the server returns from a vacation and finds at least one waiting customer. The matrix-geometric method is used to obtain the probability distribution of system-length at prearrival epoch. With the help of Markov renewal theory approach, we also derive the system-length distribution at an arbitrary epoch. The analysis of actual-waiting-time distribution in the queue measured in slots has also been carried out. In addition, computational experiences with a variety of numerical results are discussed to display the effect of the system parameters on the performance measures.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate multi-class multi-server queueing systems with global FCFS policy, i.e., where customers requiring different types of service—provided by distinct servers—are accommodated in one common FCFS queue. In such scenarios, customers of one class (i.e., requiring a given type of service) may be hindered by customers of other classes. The purpose of this paper is twofold: to gain (qualitative and quantitative) insight into the impact of (i) the global FCFS policy and (ii) the relative distribution of the load amongst the customer classes, on the system performance. We therefore develop and analyze an appropriate discrete-time queueing model with general independent arrivals, two (independent) customer classes and two class-specific servers. We study the stability of the system and derive the system-content distribution at random slot boundaries; we also obtain mean values of the system content and the customer delay, both globally and for each class individually. We then extensively compare these results with those obtained for an analogous system without global FCFS policy (i.e., with individual queues for the two servers). We demonstrate that global FCFS, as well as the relative distribution of the load over the two customer classes, may have a major impact on the system performance.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a single-server polling system with switch-over times. We introduce a new service discipline, mixed gated/exhaustive service, that can be used for queues with two types of customers: high and low priority customers. At the beginning of a visit of the server to such a queue, a gate is set behind all customers. High priority customers receive priority in the sense that they are always served before any low priority customers. But high priority customers have a second advantage over low priority customers. Low priority customers are served according to the gated service discipline, i.e. only customers standing in front of the gate are served during this visit. In contrast, high priority customers arriving during the visit period of the queue are allowed to pass the gate and all low priority customers before the gate. We study the cycle time distribution, the waiting time distributions for each customer type, the joint queue length distribution of all priority classes at all queues at polling epochs, and the steady-state marginal queue length distributions for each customer type. Through numerical examples we illustrate that the mixed gated/exhaustive service discipline can significantly decrease waiting times of high priority jobs. In many cases there is a minimal negative impact on the waiting times of low priority customers but, remarkably, it turns out that in polling systems with larger switch-over times there can be even a positive impact on the waiting times of low priority customers.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a discrete-time GI/G/1 queueing model with negative arrivals. By deriving the probability generating function of actual service time of ordinary customers, we reduced the analysis to an equivalent discrete-time GI/G/1 queueing model without negative arrival, and obtained the probability generating function of buffer contents and random customer delay.  相似文献
