Interaction of urea with pluronic block copolymers by 1H NMR spectroscopy   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Solution 1H NMR techniques were used to characterize the interaction of urea with poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymers. The urea was established to interact selectively with the PEO blocks of the block copolymer, and the interaction sites were found not to change with increasing temperature. Such interactions influence the self-assembly properties of the block copolymer in solution by increasing the hydration of the block copolymers and stabilizing the gauche conformation of the PPO chain. Therefore, urea increases the critical micellization temperature (CMT) values of PEO-PPO-PEO copolymers, and the effect of urea on the CMT is more pronounced for copolymers with higher PEO contents and lower for those with increased contents of PPO segments.  相似文献

This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of poly(butadiene)m-poly(L-lysine)n (m-n = 107-200, 107-100, and 60-50) block copolymers. The polymers are prepared in a two-step process whereby amine-terminated polybutadiene is used to initiate the ring-opening polymerization of the epsilon-benzyloxycarbonyl L-lysine N-carboxyanhydride. After deprotection, the self-assembly of the block copolymers in aqueous media were studied using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. These block copolymers were found to form either spherical micelles or rod-like micelles at high pH depending on the composition of the block copolymer. As the pH is decreased, the micelles swell due to charge-charge repulsions between corona chains and from the helix-coil transition of the polypeptide block. The two systems that form rod-like micelles at high pH also exhibit a pH-induced rod-sphere transition at low pH. This transition was verified from Kratky analysis of the static light scattering data and via CONTIN analysis of the dynamic light scattering data, which shows a bimodal distribution in particle sizes.  相似文献

The synthesis, characterization and the self-assembly process of a novel biodegradable block copolymer containing a poly(epsilon-caprolactone), PCL, central block and three poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), PVP, arms are reported. Three samples with different amounts of PVP were investigated. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, (1)H NMR and viscosity measurements. The composition and the molecular weights of the block copolymers were established using size exclusion chromatography SEC and (1)H NMR. Micelle formation by these copolymers was monitored by using the vibrational fine structure of pyrene monomer fluorescence and the critical aggregation concentrations, cac, of the copolymers in aqueous solution were determined using sigmoid Boltzmann-type fitting of the fluorescence data. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed a bimodal size distribution for the copolymers in solution, indicating that the micellization is an intermolecular process. Partitioning coefficients of pyrene between copolymer micelles and water were also determined and increase in magnitude with increasing epsilon-caprolactone content of the copolymer.  相似文献

The present paper discusses block copolymers with segments of either poly(ethylene oxide), poly(propylene oxide), or mixtures of poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(propylene oxide) and monodisperse aramide segments. The length of the polyether segments as well as the concentration of polyethylene oxide was varied. The synthesized copolymers were analyzed by DSC, FTIR, AFM and DMTA. In addition, the hydrophilicity was studied. The crystallinity of the monodisperse aramide segments was found to be high and the crystals, dispersed in the polyether phase, displayed a nano-ribbon morphology. The PEO segments were able to crystallize and this crystalline phase reduced the low-temperature flexibility. The PEO crystallinity and melting temperature could be strongly reduced by copolymerization with PPO segments. By using mixtures of PEO and PPO segments, hydrophilic copolymers with decent low-temperature properties could be obtained.  相似文献

A series of new polypseudorotaxanes were synthesized in high yields when the middle poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block of poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) (PPO-PEO-PPO) triblock copolymers was selectively recognized and included by alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD) to form crystalline inclusion complexes (ICs), although the middle PEO block was flanked by two thicker PPO blocks, and a PPO chain had been previously thought to be impenetrable to alpha-CD. X-ray diffraction studies demonstrated that the IC domains of the polypseudorotaxanes assumed a channel-type structure similar to the necklace-like ICs formed by alpha-CD and PEO homopolymers. Solid-state CP/MAS (13)C NMR studies showed that the alpha-CD molecules in the polypseudorotaxanes adopted a symmetrical conformation due to the formation of ICs. The compositions and stoichiometry of the polypseudorotaxanes were studied using (1)H NMR, and a 2:1 (ethylene oxide unit to alpha-CD) stoichiometry was found for all polypseudorotaxanes although the PPO-PEO-PPO triblock copolymers had different compositions and block lengths, suggesting that only the PEO block was closely included by alpha-CD molecules, whereas the PPO blocks were uncovered. The hypothesis was further supported by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies of the polypseudorotaxanes. The glass transitions of the PPO blocks in the polypseudorotaxanes were clearly observed because they were uncovered by alpha-CD and remained amorphous, whereas the glass-transition temperatures increased, because the molecular motion of the PPO blocks was restricted by the hard crystalline phases of the IC domains formed by alpha-CD and the PEO blocks. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the polypseudorotaxanes had better thermal stability than their free components due to the inclusion complexation. Finally, the kinetics of the threading process of alpha-CD onto the copolymers was also studied. The findings reported in this article suggested interesting possibilities in designing other cyclodextrin ICs and polypseudorotaxanes with block structures.  相似文献

New step‐growth graft block copolymers were synthesized. These two‐sided comb copolymers consisted of a poly(amic ester) (PAE) backbone and pendant poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) grafts. The copolymers were made via a macromonomer approach, in which the 4,6‐bischlorocarbonyl isophthalic acid bis[poly(propylene oxide)] ester macromonomer was synthesized through the reaction of hydroxyl‐terminated PPO oligomers with pyromellitic dianhydride and oxalyl chloride. This macromonomer was subsequently used in step‐growth polymerization with comonomers 4,6‐bischlorocarbonyl isophthalic acid diethyl ester, 2,5‐bischlorocarbonyl terephthalic acid diethyl ester, and 2,2‐bis[4‐ (4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl] hexafluoropropane, and this yielded PPO‐co‐PAE graft copolymers. Accordingly, we report the synthesis and characterization of the PPO oligomer, the PPO macromonomer, and their corresponding PPO‐co‐PAE graft copolymers. Graft copolymers with PPO concentrations of 3–26 wt % were synthesized. These polymers were thermally cured to produce polyimide/PPO composites. The thermolysis of these polyimide/PPO composites yielded porous polyimide films with porosities ranging of 4–22.5%. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects caused by poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO; Pluronic) copolymers on the structure and stability of dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE) liposomes were studied by means of turbidity, leakage, and cryo-transmission electron microscopy investigations. The results show that by inclusion of Pluronics in the DOPE dispersion it is possible to stabilize the lamellar Lalpha phase and to produce liposomes that are stable and nonleaky at low pH (pH 5). The stabilizing capacity was observed to depend critically on the molecular composition of the Pluronics. Block copolymers with comparably long PPO and PEO segment lengths, such as F127 and F108, most effectively protected DOPE liposomes prepared at high pH from aggregation and subsequent structural rearrangements induced by acidification. A sufficiently long PPO block was found to be the most decisive parameter in order to obtain adequate coverage of the liposome surface at low Pluronic concentrations. Upon increasing the copolymer concentration, however, Pluronics with comparably short PPO and PEO segment lengths, such as F87 and P85, could also be used to stabilize the DOPE liposomes. Essentially the same trends were observed when the Pluronics were added to preformed DOPE liposomes instead of being included in the preparation mixture. In this case the least effective copolymers failed, however, to completely prevent the DOPE liposomes from releasing encapsulated hydrophilic markers.  相似文献

The poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PEG/PDMAEMA) double hydrophilic block copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization using mPEG‐Br or Br‐PEG‐Br as macroinitiators. The narrow molecular weight distribution of PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers was identified by gel permeation chromatography results. The thermosensitivity of PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers in aqueous solution was revealed to depend significantly on pH, ionic strength, chain structure, and concentration of the block copolymers. By optimizing these factors, the cloud point temperature of PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers can be limited within body temperature range (30–37 °C), which suggests that PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers could be a good candidate for drug delivery systems. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic di- and triblock copolymers having different hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic block length ratio were synthesized using ATRP. The self-assembly behavior of these AB and ABA block copolymers consisting of poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (B) and poly(2,2-(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (A) was investigated using a combination of dynamic light scattering, negative-stain transmission electron microscopy, cryoelectron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Two populations of self-organized structures in aqueous solution, micelles and compound micelles, were detected for diblock copolymers. Triblock copolymers assembled into vesicular structures of uniform sizes. Furthermore it was found that these vesicles tended to compensate the high curvature by additional organization of the polymer chains outside of the membrane. The chain hydrophilicity of the polymers appeared to have a critical impact on the self-assembly response toward temperature change. The self-reorganization of the polymers at different temperatures is discussed.  相似文献

Self‐association in aqueous solution of amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)‐b‐poly(propylene oxide)‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) (PAA‐b‐PPO‐b‐PAA) copolymers having various outer PAA block lengths are presented. These copolymers show two thermosensitive behaviors. The first one, due to hydrogen bonds between PAA and PPO resulting in large aggregates, was observed by visible spectroscopy. The second one, due to the association of PPO middle block into aggregates, was evidenced by dynamic light scattering and pyrene fluorescence. These critical temperatures both depend on the ionization and the length of PAA blocks. The characterization of the aggregates above the critical aggregation concentration by fluorescence quenching experiments showed a very low aggregation number corresponding to dimers or trimers association depending on the conditions. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Block copolymers comprising thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and hydrophobic poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA) blocks, were synthesized using the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT), their thermosensitive behavior was studied by ultraviolet spectrophotometer (UV) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) was strongly correlated to the hydrophobic/hydrophilic ratio of the copolymers. Their micellization and self-assembly behavior in dilute aqueous solution were studied by surface tension (SFT), DLS and TEM. The resulting block copolymers reversibly formed or deformed micellar assemblies during their LCSTs. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) was controlled by the composition of PBA and PNIPAM, indicating the successful formation of the block copolymers.  相似文献

The thermoreversible gelation of Pluronic [poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)–polypropylene oxide (PPO)–PEO] aqueous solutions originates from micelle formation and micelle volume changes due to PEO–water and PPO–water lower critical solution temperature behavior. The micelle volume fraction is known to dominate the sol–gel transition behavior of Pluronic aqueous solutions. Triblock copolymers of PEO and aliphatic polyesters, instead of PPO, were prepared by hexamethylene diisocyanate coupling and dicyclohexyl carbodiimide coupling. Through changes in the molecular weight and hydrophobicity of the polyester middle block, the hydrophobic–hydrophilic balance of each block was systematically controlled. The following aliphatic polyesters were used: poly(hexamethylene adipate) (PHA), poly(ethylene adipate) (PEA), and poly(ethylene succinate) (PESc). With the hydrophobicity and molecular weight of the middle block increasing, the critical micelle concentration at the same critical micelle temperature decreased, and the absolute value of the micellization free energy increased. The micelle size was rather insensitive to temperature but slightly decreased with increasing temperature. PEO–PHA–PEO and PEO–PEA–PEO triblock copolymers needed high polymer concentrations to form gels. This was ascribed to the tight aggregation of PHA and PEA chains in the micelle core due to strong hydrophobic interactions, which induced the contraction of the micelle core. However, because of the relatively hydrophilic core, a PEO–PESc–PEO aqueous solution showed gelation at a low polymer concentration. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of symmetrical, thermo-responsive triblock copolymers was prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and studied in aqueous solution with respect to their ability to form hydrogels. Triblock copolymers were composed of two identical, permanently hydrophobic outer blocks, made of low molar mass polystyrene, and of a hydrophilic inner block of variable length, consisting of poly(methoxy diethylene glycol acrylate) PMDEGA. The polymers exhibited a LCST-type phase transition in the range of 20-40 °C, which markedly depended on molar mass and concentration. Accordingly, the triblock copolymers behaved as amphiphiles at low temperatures, but became water-insoluble at high temperatures. The temperature dependent self-assembly of the amphiphilic block copolymers in aqueous solution was studied by turbidimetry and rheology at concentrations up to 30 wt %, to elucidate the impact of the inner thermoresponsive block on the gel properties. Additionally, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was performed to access the structural changes in the gel with temperature. For all polymers a gel phase was obtained at low temperatures, which underwent a gel-sol transition at intermediate temperatures, well below the cloud point where phase separation occurred. With increasing length of the PMDEGA inner block, the gel-sol transition shifts to markedly lower concentrations, as well as to higher transition temperatures. For the longest PMDEGA block studied (DP(n) about 450), gels had already formed at 3.5 wt % at low temperatures. The gel-sol transition of the hydrogels and the LCST-type phase transition of the hydrophilic inner block were found to be independent of each other.  相似文献

Shell cross-linked (SCL) micelles with amine-functional coronas have been constructed in aqueous solution by exploiting the micellar self-assembly of new thermo-responsive ABC triblock copolymers. These copolymers were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) in convenient one-pot syntheses and comprised a thermo-responsive core-forming poly(propylene oxide) [PPO] block, a cross-linkable central poly(glycerol monomethacrylate) [GMA] block and an amine-functional outer block based on either poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) [DMA] or poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethyl ammonium chloride) [QDMA]. DMF GPC analysis indicated an Mn of 17,700 and an Mw/Mn of 1.46 for the PPO-PGMA-PDMA triblock copolymer. The DMA residues of the PPO-PGMA-PDMA triblock copolymer were reacted with methyl iodide to prepare copolymers with differing degrees of quaternisation. Each triblock copolymer dissolved molecularly in aqueous solution at 5 °C and formed micelles with amine-functional coronas above a critical micelle temperature (CMT) of around 12 °C, which corresponded closely to the cloud point of the PPO macro-initiator. Cross-linking of the GMA residues in the inner shell using divinyl sulfone produced SCL micelles that remained intact at 5 °C, i.e. below the cloud point of the core-forming PPO block. Aqueous electrophoresis studies confirmed that these SCL micelles had considerable cationic surface charge, as expected. The cationic SCL micelles were adsorbed onto a near-monodisperse anionic silica sol, which was used as a model colloidal substrate. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated SCL micelle mass loadings of 6.1-15.5 wt.%, depending on the initial micelle concentration. Aqueous electrophoresis studies confirmed that surface charge reversal occurred on adsorption of the SCL micelles and scanning electron microscopy studies revealed the presence of SCL micelles on the silica particles.  相似文献

Four-arm star block polymers consisting of hydrophobic poly(?-caprolactone) (PCL) block and hydrophilic poly(2-(diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate)) (PDEAEMA) block were successfully synthesized by ring opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Chain lengths of PDEAEMA segments were varied to obtain a series of star copolymers with different hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio, which were desired for self-assembly study. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) were used to study their self-assembly behavior. In the PBS solution with different pH value, the star polymers formed micelles or nanoparticles. Furthermore, the morphologies of the micelles were also pH-dependent. Critical micelle concentrations of star copolymers changed from 5.0 to 17.5 mg/L with the increase of hydrophilic block length or the pH decrease. Moreover, a steady increase was found on the micelles diameters when the pH decreased from 7.0 to 3.0. The low CMC value and slight changes on micelle diameter indicated that the micelle remained stable under the changing external stimulus.  相似文献

This article reviews the results of recent investigations on the macroscopic (phase behavior) and microscopic (microstructure) aspects of the role of cosolvents on the self-assembly of amphiphilic copolymers. A comprehensive account of the systematic studies performed in ternary isothermal systems consisting of a representative poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO–PPO–PEO) block copolymer (Pluronic P105, EO37PO58EO37), water and a polar cosolvent (such as glycerol, propylene glycol or ethanol) is presented. The effect of cosolvents on the copolymer phase behavior is quantified in terms of the highest cosolvent/water ratio able to maintain the liquid crystalline structures. The effect of cosolvents on the microstructure of the lyotropic liquid crystals is quantified in terms of the degree of relative swelling per cosolvent content per copolymer content, a parameter that characterizes the given cosolvent and copolymer. The set of correlations on the cosolvent effects on the phase behavior or microstructure to the cosolvent physicochemical characteristics (such as octanol/water partition coefficient or solubility parameter) have led to the development of a hypothesis that accounts for the cosolvent effects on the self-assembly of PEO–PPO–PEO block copolymers and can be used to predict them. The rich structural diversity and the potential for a precise and convenient modification of the lyotropic liquid crystalline microstructure of the PEO–PPO–PEO block copolymers is discussed in comparison to the phase behavior of the low-molecular nonionic surfactants.  相似文献

The adsorption of amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(gamma-methyl-epsilon-caprolactone) copolymers in aqueous solution on silica and glass surfaces has been investigated by flow microcalorimetry, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), surface forces, and complementary techniques. The studied copolymers consist of a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block of M(n) = 5000 and a hydrophobic polyester block of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) or poly(gamma-methyl-epsilon-caprolactone) (PMCL) of M(n) in the 950-2200 range. Compared to homoPEO, the adsorption of the copolymers is significantly increased by the connection of PEO to an aliphatic polyester block. According to calorimetric experiments, the copolymers interact with the surface mainly through the hydrophilic block. At low surface coverage, the PEO block interacts with the surface such that both PEO and PCL chains are exposed to the aqueous solution. At high surface coverage, a dense copolymer layer is observed with the PEO blocks oriented toward the solution. The structure of the copolymer layer has been analyzed by neutron scattering using the contrast matching technique and by tapping mode atomic force microscopy. The experimental observations agree with the coadsorption of micelles and free copolymer chains at the interface.  相似文献

The effect of chemical degradation of two diblock copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) (E) and poly(lactide) (L), E(39)L(5) and E(39)L(20), on their adsorption at silica and methylated silica was investigated with in situ ellipsometry. Steric stablization of polystyrene dispersions was investigated in relation to degradation. Hydrolysis of the poly(lactide) block of the copolymers was followed at different temperatures and pH by using HPLC to measure the occurrence of lactic acid in solution. The block copolymers were quite stable in pH-unadjusted solution at low temperature, whereas degradation was facilitated by increasing temperature or lowering of the pH. Lower degradation rates of E(39)L(20) where observed at low temperature in comparison with those of E(39)L(5), whereas the degradation rates of the copolymers were quantitatively similar at high temperature. The adsorption of the copolymers at methylated silica substrates decreased with increasing degree of degradation due to the reduction in the ability of hydrophobic block to anchor the copolymer layer at the surface. At silica the adsorption initially increased with increasing degradation, particularly for E(39)L(20) due to deposition of aggregates onto the surface. After extensive degradation the adsorption of the copolymers at both silica and methylated silica resembled that of the corresponding poly(ethylene oxide) homopolymer. Overall, it was found that the eventual reduction in adsorption occurred at a lower degree of degradation for E(39)L(5) than for E(39)L(20). Mean-field calculations showed a reduced anchoring for the block copolymers with decreasing poly(lactide) block length at hydrophobic surfaces. In accordance with this finding, it was observed that polystyrene dispersions were stabilized by E(39)L(20) or E(39)L(5) in a way that depended on both the lactide block length and the degree of degradation. Upon degradation of the hydrophobic block, stabilization of the polystyrene dispersions was maintained initially, but eventually degradation resulted in destabilization. The average residual copolymer concentration required for stabilization of the polystyrene dispersions was much higher than the corresponding concentration of intact copolymer required for stabilization.
