The low-energy beam and ion trap facility LEBIT at the NSCL at MSU has demonstrated that rare isotopes produced by fast-beam fragmentation can be slowed down and prepared such that precision experiments with low-energy beams are possible. For this purpose high-pressure gas-stopping is employed combined with advanced ion manipulation techniques. Penning trap mass measurements on short-lived rare isotopes have been performed with a 9.4 T Penning trap mass spectrometer. Examples include 66As, which has a half-live of only 96 ms, and the super-allowed Fermi-emitter 38Ca, for which a mass accuracy of 8 ppb (280 eV) has been achieved. The high accuracy of this new mass value makes 38Ca a new candidate for the test of the conserved vector current hypothesis.   相似文献

The mass of one of the three major waiting points in the astrophysical rp process 72Kr was measured for the first time with the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP. The measurement yielded a relative mass uncertainty of deltam/m=1.2x10(-7) (deltam=8 keV). (73,74)Kr, also needed for astrophysical calculations, were measured with more than 1 order of magnitude improved accuracy. We use the ISOLTRAP masses of 72-74Kr to reanalyze the role of 72Kr (T(1/2)=17.2 s) in the rp process during x-ray bursts and conclude that 72Kr is a strong waiting point delaying the burst duration with at least 80% of its beta-decay half-life.  相似文献

A high-precision Penning trap mass measurement of the exotic 8He nuclide (T(1/2)=119 ms) has been carried out resulting in a reduction of the uncertainty of the halo binding energy by over an order of magnitude. The new mass, determined with a relative uncertainty of 9.2 x 10(-8) (deltam=690 eV) is 13 keV less bound than the previously accepted value. The mass measurement is of great relevance for the recent charge-radius measurement of 8He [P. Mueller, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 252501 (2007).10.1103/PhysRevLett.99.252501]. The 8He mass is the first result from the newly-commissioned Penning trap: TITAN (TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear science) at the ISAC (Isotope Separator and Accelerator) radioactive beam facility at TRIUMF.  相似文献

Mass measurements on (33,34,42,43)Ar were performed using the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP and a newly constructed linear Paul trap. This arrangement allowed us, for the first time, to extend Penning trap mass measurements to nuclides with half-lives below one second ( 33Ar: T(1/2) = 174 ms). A mass accuracy of about 10(-7) (deltam approximately 4 keV) was achieved for all investigated nuclides. The isobaric multiplet mass equation was checked for the A = 33, T = 3/2 quartet and found to be inconsistent with the generally accepted quadratic form.  相似文献

The JYFLTRAP Penning trap set-up at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland is a Penning trap facility that has provided high-precision atomic mass values for short-lived nuclides since 2003. Until now, masses of more than 250 short-lived nuclides have been measured. Since JYFLTRAP is coupled to the chemically insensitive IGISOL mass separator, any element can be accessed. So far, a huge mass surface extending from magnesium (Z = 12) to lead (Z = 82) has been covered.  相似文献

Neutrinos may be pseudo-Dirac states, such that each generation is actually composed of two maximally mixed Majorana neutrinos separated by a tiny mass difference. The usual active neutrino oscillation phenomenology would be unaltered if the pseudo-Dirac splittings are deltam(2) less, similar 10(-12) eV(2); in addition, neutrinoless double beta decay would be highly suppressed. However, it may be possible to distinguish pseudo-Dirac from Dirac neutrinos using high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. By measuring flavor ratios as a function of L/E, mass-squared differences down to deltam(2) approximately 10(-18) eV(2) can be reached. We comment on the possibility of probing cosmological parameters with neutrinos.  相似文献

A high-precision direct Penning trap mass measurement has revealed a 0.5-MeV deviation of the binding energy of (134)Sn from the currently accepted value. The corrected mass assignment of this neutron-rich nuclide restores the neutron-shell gap at N=82, previously considered to be a case of "shell quenching." In fact, the new shell gap value for the short-lived (132)Sn is larger than that of the doubly magic (48)Ca which is stable. The N=82 shell gap has considerable impact on fission recycling during the r process. More generally, the new finding has important consequences for microscopic mean-field theories which systematically deviate from the measured binding energies of closed-shell nuclides.  相似文献

The stability of multiply charged sodium clusters Na(q+)(n) (q< or =10) produced in collisions between neutral clusters and multiply charged ions A(z+) ( z = 1 to 28) is experimentally investigated. Multiply charged clusters are formed within a large range of temperatures and fissilities. They are identified by means of a high-resolution reflectron-type time-of-flight mass spectrometer (m/deltam approximately 14 000). The maximum fissility of stable clusters is obtained for z = 28 and is X approximately 0.85+/-0.07, slightly below the Rayleigh limit (X = 1). It is mainly limited by the initial cluster temperature (T approximately 100 K).  相似文献

We calculate coherent neutrino and antineutrino flavor transformation in the supernova environment, for the first time including self-consistent coupling of intersecting neutrino and antineutrino trajectories. For neutrino mass-squared difference /deltam2/ = 3 x 10(-3) eV2 we find that in the normal (inverted) mass hierarchy the more tangentially-propagating (radially-propagating) neutrinos and antineutrinos can initiate collective, simultaneous medium-enhanced flavor conversion of these particles across broad ranges of energy and propagation direction. Accompanying alterations in neutrino and antineutrino energy spectra and fluxes could affect supernova nucleosynthesis and the expected neutrino signal.  相似文献

Penning trap mass measurements of short-lived nuclides have been performed for the first time with highly charged ions, using the TITAN facility at TRIUMF. Compared to singly charged ions, this provides an improvement in experimental precision that scales with the charge state q. Neutron-deficient Rb isotopes have been charge bred in an electron beam ion trap to q=8-12+ prior to injection into the Penning trap. In combination with the Ramsey excitation scheme, this unique setup creating low energy, highly charged ions at a radioactive beam facility opens the door to unrivaled precision with gains of 1-2 orders of magnitude. The method is particularly suited for short-lived nuclides such as the superallowed β emitter 74Rb (T(1/2)=65 ms). The determination of its atomic mass and an improved Q(EC) value are presented.  相似文献

N=Z核的质量数据对于研究rp-和νp-过程至关重要。此外,N=Z原子核的质量数据将会帮助我们解决与核结构有关的许多关键问题。结合碎片分离器的等时性质谱仪(Isochronous mass spectrometry,IMS)是十分快速有效而且高分辨的质量测量工具。由于N=Z核的m/q值非常接近,目前国际上的储存环质量谱仪CSRe/IMP和ESR/GSI还无法实现对N=Z核运用飞行时间谱进行鉴别,因而无法对它们进行质量测量。在日本理化学研究所的仁科加速器中心新建了专用的等时性质谱仪(IMS),即稀有放射性同位素储存环"Rare-RI Ring"(R3),以确定短寿命的放射性原子核的质量,其目标质量相对精度为10-6。R3质谱仪与高分辨的碎片分离器BigRIPS的组合,运用束流线的高分辨的离子鉴别,使得R3上的IMS方法对N=Z核进行质量测量成为可能。本文设计了专用的等时性束流光学设置,模拟了124Xe的主束经过碎裂反应产生的N=Z核在束流线中穿过各焦平面的径迹、能量、速度等信息,同时检验了这些次级束在环内的飞行时间相对于动量的变化关系。模拟的结果表明:当储存环的等时性光学设置在某一个N=Z核时,所有其它N=Z核在环内的回旋时间也与动量弥散无关,说明了这些核也满足等时性条件。基于N=Z核的这种等时性的特点,本文对R3上刻度N=Z核的方法也进行了讨论。  相似文献

With the commissioning of the Cooler Storage Ring at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL-CSR),a pilot experiment operating the CSRe in isochronous mode to test the power of HIRFL-CSR for measuring the mass of the short-lived nucleus was performed in December of 2007.The fragments with A/q=2 of ~(36) Ar were injected into CSRe and their revolution frequencies were measured with a fast time pick-up detector with a thin foil in the circulating path of the ions.The preliminary result is presented.The result shows the potential of CSRe for mass measurements of short-lived nuclei.  相似文献

A tandem Penning trap system, the ISOLTRAP, is now used at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE at CERN, Geneva, for accurate mass measurements of short-lived nuclei. The mass of the stored ions is measured by the determination of the cyclotron frequency c=qB/m in theB=6 T magnetic field of the trap. A new technique has been developed and implemented to allow reliable high-efficiency loading of the trap with radioactive heavy ions.  相似文献

alpha-gamma and alpha-electron coincidence spectroscopy for a short-lived heavy actinide nucleus (257)No (T(1/2) = 24.5 s) has been performed using a gas-jet transport system and an on-line isotope separator. Spin-parities of excited states in (253)Fm fed by the alpha decay of (257)No have been identified on the basis of the measured internal conversion coefficients. The nu3/2(+)[622] configuration has been assigned to the ground state of (257)No as well as to the 124.1 keV level in (253)Fm. It was found that the ground-state configuration of (257)No is different from that of lighter N = 155 isotones.  相似文献

The low-energy beam and ion trap facility LEBIT at NSCL/MSU is at present the only facility where precision experiments are performed with stopped rare isotope beams produced by fast-beam fragmentation. LEBIT combines high-pressure-gas stopping with advanced ion manipulation techniques to provide brilliant low-energy beams. So far these beams have mainly been used for mass measurements on short-lived rare isotopes with a 9.4T Penning trap mass spectrometer. Recent examples include 70m Br , located at the proton dripline, 32Si and the iron isotopes 63-65Fe . While the measurement of 32Si helps to solve a long-standing dispute over the validity of the isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) for the A = 32 , T = 2 multiplet, the mass measurements of 65m,g Fe marked the first time a nuclear isomeric state has been discovered by Penning trap mass spectrometry.  相似文献

The violin bridge filter role was investigated using modal and acoustic measurements on 12 quality-rated violins combined with systematic bridge rocking frequency f(rock) and wing mass decrements deltam on four bridges for two other violins. No isolated bridge resonances were observed; bridge motions were complex (including a "squat" mode near 0.8 kHz) except for low frequency rigid body pivot motions, all more or less resembling rocking motion at higher frequencies. A conspicuous broad peak near 2.3 kHz in bridge driving point mobility (labeled BH) was seen for good and bad violins. Similar structure was seen in averaged bridge, bridge feet, corpus mobilities and averaged radiativity. No correlation between violin quality and BH driving point, averaged corpus mobility magnitude, or radiativity was found. Increasing averaged-over-f(rock) deltam(g) from 0 to 0.12 generally increased radiativity across the spectrum. Decreasing averaged-over-deltam f(rock) from 3.6 to 2.6 kHz produced consistent decreases in radiativity between 3 and 4.2 kHz, but only few-percent decreases in BH frequency. The lowest f(rock) values were accompanied by significantly reduced radiation from the Helmholtz A0 mode near 280 Hz; this, combined with reduced high frequency output, created overall radiativity profiles quite similar to "bad" violins among the quality-rated violins.  相似文献

Resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) has been applied, firstly, to a study of the nuclear properties of short-lived Au isotopes at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE at CERN and, secondly, to a trace-analysis experiment of Pu.  相似文献

New resonance detection mechanisms based on atom or ion counting instead of fluorescence photon detection have been introduced in collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE. This increased the sensitivity by several orders of magnitude and allowed measurements on short-lived isotopes very far from stability, which are available in minor quantities only (≤103 ions per second). Results of recent measurements on the medium mass and light elements Sr, Kr, Ca and Li are presented.  相似文献

ISOLTRAP is a Penning trap mass spectrometer for high-precision mass measurements on short-lived nuclides installed at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE at CERN. The masses of close to 300 radionuclides have been determined up to now. The applicability of Penning trap mass spectrometry to mass measurements of exotic nuclei has been extended considerably at ISOLTRAP by improving and developing this double Penning trap mass spectrometer over the past two decades. The accurate determination of nuclear binding energies far from stability includes nuclei that are produced at rates less than 100 ions/s and with half-lives well below 100ms. The mass-resolving power reaches 107 corresponding to 10keV for medium heavy nuclei and the uncertainty of the resulting mass values has been pushed down to below 10-8. The article describes technical developments achieved since 1996 and the present performance of ISOLTRAP.  相似文献
