We report detailed measurements of the low temperature magnetic phase diagram of Er2Ti2O7. Heat capacity and time-of-flight neutron scattering studies of single crystals reveal unconventional low-energy states. Er3+ magnetic ions reside on a pyrochlore lattice in Er2Ti2O7, where local XY anisotropy and antiferromagnetic interactions give rise to a unique frustrated system. In zero field, the ground state exhibits coexisting short and long-range order, accompanied by soft collective spin excitations previously believed to be absent. The application of finite magnetic fields tunes the ground state continuously through a landscape of noncollinear phases, divided by a zero temperature phase transition at micro{0}H{c} approximately 1.5 T. The characteristic energy scale for spin fluctuations is seen to vanish at the critical point, as expected for a second order quantum phase transition driven by quantum fluctuations.  相似文献

We study the semiclassical limit of the Sp(N) generalization of the pyrochlore lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet by expanding about the N --> infinity saddlepoint in powers of a generalized inverse spin. To leading order, we write down an effective Hamiltonian as a series in loops on the lattice. Using this as a formula for calculating the energy of any classical ground state, we perform Monte Carlo simulations and find a unique collinear ground state. This state is not a ground state of linear spin-wave theory, and can therefore not be a physical (N = 1) semiclassical ground state.  相似文献

We have studied the spin liquid Tb2Ti2O7 by single crystal neutron diffraction under high pressure up to 2.8 GPa, together with uniaxial stress, down to 0.1 K, in zero and high magnetic fields up to 7 T. In zero magnetic field, a long-range ordered antiferromagnetic structure is induced by pressure. The Néel temperature and ordered magnetic moment can be tuned by the anisotropic pressure component. Under magnetic field, the antiferromagnetic structure transforms into a canted ferromagnetic one at 0.6 T. Spin canting persists even at 7 T. The magnetic phase diagram under pressure shows a strong increase of the Néel temperature with the field.  相似文献

Domain walls in the four-sublattice antiferromagnet La2CuO4 are considered. The spin waves spectrum on the single domain wall is studied. The stability of the walls and the intrawalls phase transitions are analysed.  相似文献

Magnetoacoustic resonance on nuclear spin waves is measured in the cubic antiferromagnet RbMnF3. A resonance change with respect to a constant magnetic field H 0 with maximum damping at H 0≈4×103 Oe is observed in the amplitude of an acoustic pulse passing through a sample owing to excitation of nuclear spin waves under nuclear magnetoacoustic resonance conditions. A study of the angular dependence of the damping revealed a 90° periodicity consistent with the fact that the [001] direction, around which the rotation takes place, is a four-fold axis of the crystal. An analysis of the dispersion law for nuclear spin waves shows that longitudinal ultrasound propagating along the [001] axis perpendicular to H 0 excites a branch of nuclear spin waves whose frequency depends on the magnitude of the constant magnetic field. We study quantum effects in a spin-3/2 antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice in an external magnetic field, focusing on the vicinity of a plateau in the magnetization at half the saturation value, observed in CdCr2O4 and HgCr2O4. Our theory, based on quantum fluctuations, predicts the existence of a symmetry-broken state on the plateau, even with only nearest-neighbor microscopic exchange. This symmetry-broken state consists of a particular arrangement of spins polarized parallel and antiparallel to the field in a 3:1 ratio on each tetrahedron. It quadruples the lattice unit cell, and reduces the space group from Fd3m to P4(3)32. We also predict that for fields just above the plateau, the low-temperature phase has transverse spin order, describable as a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons. Other comparisons to and suggestions for experiments are discussed.  相似文献

A nonuniform distribution of the density of parametrically excited magnons is observed experimentally in an antiferromagnetic CsMnF3 sample. The nonuniform distribution occurs at a high pumping power when oscillations of the high frequency susceptibility occur. These oscillations were observed earlier and their nature was not clear. It is found that during the increase of the absorbed power on the occurrence of the oscillation, the spin wave condenses near the middle of the sample. The condensation occurs as a result of a nonlinear shift of the magnon spectrum and is similar to self-focusing of light in nonlinear media. The electromagnetic radiation of parametrically excited spin waves is studied. It is found that the periodic redistribution of the density exerts an additional restrictive effect on the amplitude of the parametrically excited magnons.  相似文献

Using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering we show that a cubic spinel, CdCr2O4, undergoes an elongation along the c axis (c > a = b) at its spin-Peierls-like phase transition at T(N) = 7.8 K. The Néel phase (T < T(N)) has an incommensurate spin structure with a characteristic wave vector Q(M) = (0, delta,1) with delta approximately 0.09 and with spins lying on the ac plane. This is in stark contrast to another well-known Cr-based spinel, ZnCr2O4, that undergoes a c-axis contraction and a commensurate spin order. The magnetic excitation of the incommensurate Néel state has a weak anisotropy gap of 0.6 meV and it consists of at least three bands extending up to 5 meV.  相似文献

At several (h+12 0 0) reciprocal lattice positions of PrSn3, we observed Bragg scattering of neutrons which is purely due to the nuclear spin polarization of 141Pr, and could measure the temperature dependence of the polarization between 10 mK and 4.2 K. From the perfectly polarized state of the nuclear spins, the difference between the spin-dependent nuclear scattering lengths b+ and b- has been determined to be b+ - b- = -0.110 ± 0.006 × 10-12 cm, which is significantly larger in magnitude than the previously reported value. An additional electronic polarization which is linearly proportional to the nuclear spin polarization has also been observed.  相似文献

A theoretical model of magnetoacoustic resonance on nuclear spin waves in an easy-plane antiferromagnet KMnF3 with large dynamic frequency shift is developed. Experimental results on resonance decay of ultrasound, splitting of the ultrasound pulse into two component and anomalous dispersion of the sound velocity depending on the value of the external magnetic field confirm this theory.  相似文献

Low temperature magnetization measurements on the pyrochlore spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 reveal that the ice-rule breaking spin flip, appearing at H approximately 0.9 T applied parallel to the [111] direction, turns into a novel first-order transition for T<0.36 K which is most probably of a liquid-gas type. T-linear variation of the critical field observed down to 0.03 K suggests the unusual situation that the entropy release across the transition remains finite [approximately 0.5 (J/K) x mol-Dy] as T-->0, in accordance with a breaking of the macroscopic degeneracy in the intermediate "kagomé ice" state.  相似文献

The magnetic and electronic properties of the geometrically frustrated triangular antiferromagnet CuCrO2 are investigated by first principles through density functional theory calculations within the generalized gradient approxi- mations (GGA)+U scheme. The spin exchange interactions up to the third nearest neighbours in the ab plane as well as the coupling between adjacent layers are calculated to examine the magnetism and spin frustration. It is found that CuCrO2 has a natural two-dimensional characteristic of the magnetic interaction. Using Monte Carlo simulation, we obtain the Neel temperature to be 29.9 K, which accords well with the experimental value of 24 K. Based on non- collinear magnetic structure calculations, we verify that the incommensurate spiral-spin structure with (110) spiral plane is believable for the magnetic ground state, which is consistent with the experimental observations. Due to intra-layer geometric spin frustration, parallel helical-spin chains arise along the a, b, or a+ b directions, each with a screw-rotation angle of about I20°. Our calculations of the density of states show that the spin frustration plays an important role in the change of d-p hybridization, while the spin-orbit coupling has a very limited influence on the electronic structure.  相似文献

We discuss the ground state of a pyrochlore lattice of threefold orbitally degenerate S=1/2 magnetic ions. We derive an effective spin-orbital Hamiltonian and show that the orbital degrees of freedom can modulate the spin exchange, removing the infinite spin-degeneracy characteristic of pyrochlore structures. The resulting state is a collection of spin-singlet dimers, with a residual degeneracy due to their relative orientation. This latter is lifted by a magnetoelastic interaction, induced in the spin-singlet phase space, that forces a tetragonal distortion. Such a theory provides an explanation for the helical spin-singlet pattern observed in the B spinel MgTi2O4.  相似文献

The (three-dimensional) pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet with Heisenberg spins of large spin length S is a highly frustrated model with a macroscopic degeneracy of classical ground states. The zero-point energy of (harmonic-order) spin-wave fluctuations distinguishes a subset of these states. I derive an approximate but illuminating effective Hamiltonian, acting within the subspace of Ising spin configurations representing the collinear ground states. It consists of products of Ising spins around loops, i.e., has the form of a Z2 lattice gauge theory. The remaining ground-state entropy is still infinite but not extensive, being O(L) for system size O(L3). All these ground states have unit cells bigger than those considered previously.  相似文献

We show that the electric-field-induced thermal asymmetry between the electron and lattice systems in pure silicon substantially impacts the identity of the dominant spin relaxation mechanism. Comparison of empirical results from long-distance spin transport devices with detailed Monte?Carlo simulations confirms a strong spin depolarization beyond what is expected from the standard Elliott-Yafet theory even at low temperatures. The enhanced spin-flip mechanism is attributed to phonon emission processes during which electrons are scattered between conduction band valleys that reside on different crystal axes. This leads to anomalous behavior, where (beyond a critical field) reduction of the transit time between spin-injector and spin-detector is accompanied by a counterintuitive reduction in spin polarization and an apparent negative spin lifetime.  相似文献
