What is the nature of illumination in mathematics? That is, what is it that sets illumination apart from other mathematical experiences? In this article the answer to this question is pursued through a qualitative study that seeks to compare and contrast the AHA! experiences of preservice teachers with those of prominent research mathematicians. Using a methodology of analytic induction in conjunction with historical and contemporary theories of discovery, creativity, and invention along with theories of affect the anecdotal reflections of participants from these two populations are analysed. Results indicate that, although manifested differently in the two populations, what sets illumination apart from other mathematical experiences are the affective aspects of the experience.  相似文献

When should one refinance a mortgage loan? It is one of the most common finance questions in today's world. There have been surprisingly few attempts to answer this question in a structured manner, however. Moreover, the existing guidelines for refinancing consist of a short list of very simple rules that have a limited application. This article addresses the question through a dynamic programming model coupled with an analysis of historical interest rates. The analysis reveals a more complex set of rules for an optional refinance decision––oftentimes conflicting with the conventionally accepted idea that rate differences must be greater than two percent.  相似文献

Three issues concerning the relationship between research and practice are addressed. (1) A certain ‘prototype mathematics classroom’ seems to dominate the research field, which in many cases seems selective with respect to what practices to address. I suggest challenging the dominance of the discourse created around the prototype mathematics classroom. (2) I find it important to broaden the school-centred discourse on mathematics education and to address the very different out-of-school practices that include mathematics. Many of these practices are relevant for interpreting what is taking place in a school context. That brings us to (3) socio-political issues of mathematics education. When the different school-sites for learning mathematics as well as the many different practices that include mathematics are related, we enter the socio-political dimension of mathematics education.On the one hand we must consider questions like: Could socio-political discrimination be acted out through mathematics education? Could mathematics education exercise a regimentation and disciplining of students? Could it include discrimination in terms of language? Could it include sexism and racism? On the other hand: Could mathematics education bring about competencies which can be described as empowering, and as supporting the development of mathematical literary or a ‘mathemacy’, important for the development of critical citizenship?However, there is no hope for identifying a one-way route to mathemacy. More generally: There is no simple way of identifying the socio-political functions of mathematics education. Mathematics education has to face uncertainty, and this challenge brings us to the notion of responsibility.  相似文献

We contrast Williams? and Walley?s theories of coherent lower previsions in the light of conglomerability. These are two of the most credited approaches to a behavioural theory of imprecise probability. Conglomerability is the notion that distinguishes them most: Williams? theory does not consider it, while Walley aims at embedding it in his theory. This question is important, as conglomerability is a major point of disagreement at the foundations of probability, since it was first defined by de Finetti in 1930. We show that Walley?s notion of joint coherence (which is the single axiom of his theory) for conditional lower previsions does not take all the implications of conglomerability into account. Considering also some previous results in the literature, we deduce that Williams? theory should be the one to use when conglomerability is not required; for the opposite case, we define the new theory of conglomerably coherent lower previsions, which is arguably the one to use, and of which Walley?s theory can be understood as an approximation. We show that this approximation is exact in two important cases: when all conditioning events have positive lower probability, and when conditioning partitions are nested.  相似文献

This paper presents a statistical methodology for analyzing a complex phenomenon in which deterministic and scaling components are superimposed. Our approach is based on the wavelet multiresolution analysis combined with the scaling analysis of the entropy of a time series. The wavelet multiresolution analysis decomposes the signal in a scale-by-scale manner. The scale-by-scale decomposition generates smooth and detail curves that are evaluated and studied. A wavelet-based smoothing filtering is used to estimate the daily birth rate and conception rate during the year. The scaling analysis is based on the Diffusion Entropy Analysis (DEA). The joint use of the DEA and the wavelet multiresolution analysis allows: 1) the separation of the deterministic and, therefore, non-scaling component from the scaling component of the signal; 2) the determination of the stochastic information characterizing the teen birth phenomenon at each time scale. Our research centered on developing the Conservation Science and Technology Identity (CSTI) instruments as an empirical way to measure STEM identities and the intersection of identity constructs such as competence, performance, recognition, and ways of seeing and being. The surveys were used in a large funded multi-year project for teens and adults learning geospatial technologies and conservation science to use in intergenerational community conservation projects. We investigated whether an informal STEM learning program was developing new STEM identities or advancing well-developed identities. The instruments’ content validity was determined through a vetting process from national STEM identity research experts. Reliability was estimated with Cronbach coefficient alpha. Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon Signed Rank tests were used to determine participants’ STEM identities and the workshop’s effect on specific identity constructs. We found teens and adults had historically similar STEM identities, with stronger conservation science than technology. Both science and technology competences, as well as technology ways of seeing and being, significantly increased, suggesting CSTI can be a valuable instrument in empirically assessing STEM identities.  相似文献

Proof and proving are important components of school mathematics and have multiple functions in mathematical practice. Among these functions of proof, this paper focuses on the discovery function that refers to invention of a new statement or conjecture by reflecting on or utilizing a constructed proof. Based on two cases in which eighth and ninth graders engaged in proofs and refutations, we demonstrate that facing a counterexample of a primitive statement can become a starting point of students’ activity for discovery, and that a proof of the primitive statement can function as a useful tool for inventing a new conjecture that holds for the counterexample. An implication for developing tasks by which students can experience this discovery function is mentioned.  相似文献

Abstract

Statistical software provides essential support for statisticians and others who are analyzing data or doing research on new statistical techniques. Those supported typically regard themselves as “users” of the software, but as soon as they need to express their own ideas computationally, they in fact become “programmers.” Nothing is more important for the success of statistical software than enabling this transition from user to programmer, and on to gradually more ambitious software design. What does the user need? How can the design of statistical software help? This article presents a number of suggestions based on past experience and current research. The evolution of the S system reflects some of these opinions. Work on the Omegahat software provides a promising direction for future systems that reflect similar motivations.  相似文献

We propose an algorithm for finding the so-called principal solution of the Sylvester matrix equation over max-plus algebra. The derivation of our algorithm is based on the concept of tropical tensor product introduced by Butkovi? and Fiedler. Our algorithm reduces the computational cost of finding the principal solution from quartic to cubic. It also reduces the space complexity from quartic to quadratic. Since matrix–matrix multiplication is the most important ingredient of our proposed technique, we show how to use column-oriented matrix multiplications in order to speed-up MATLAB implementation of our algorithm. Finally, we illustrate our results and discuss the connection with the residuation theory.  相似文献

1977 is the two hundredth anniversary of the death of Johann Heinrich Lambert, a little known but nonetheless intriguing figure in 18th century science. In the general histories of science and mathematics Lambert's contributions are often described piecemeal, with each discovery and invention usually divorced both from the method by which he arrived at it and from the totality of his intellectual endeavour. To the student of optics he is remembered for his cosine law in photometry, to the astronomer for his work on comets, to the meteorologist for his design of a gut hygrometer, and to the mathematician for his work on non-Euclidean geometry and his demonstration of the irrationality of π and e. There is no doubt that each of these contributions had a definite importance of its own; but it is not the aim of the present article to enumerate in this way the high points of Lambert's scientific and mathematical work, rather to describe it for once as a unified whole, and to relate it to the contemporary intellectual outlook.  相似文献

Material objects can tell us much about mathematical practice. In 1899, Albert Sexton, a Philadelphia mechanical engineer, received the John Scott Medal of the Franklin Institute for his invention of the omnimetre. This inexpensive circular slide rule was one of a host of computing devices that became common in the United States around 1900. It is inscribed “NUMERI MUNDUM REGUNT”. In part because of instruments such as the omnimetre, numbers increasingly ruled the practical world of the late 19th and early 20th century. Generalizations of the results of an earlier paper of the second author, related to the problem of fitting a multivarite gamma distribution to empirical data, are discussed in the paper. The multivariate gamma distribution under consideration is the one that was introduced in the paper of Prékopa and Szántai (in Water Resources Research, 14:19?C24, 1978), some earlier results on the fitting problem were given in the paper of Szántai (in Alkalmazott Matematikai Lapok 10:35?C60, 1984). In the present paper it is proved that the necessary conditions given earlier are not sufficient and some further new, mostly computational results are provided, too. Using the more efficient computation tools we are able now to give the sufficient conditions for dimensions 5 and 6 as well. For higher dimensions we have only necessary conditions and the invention of a suitable necessary and sufficient condition remains an open problem when n is greater than 6. The miscellaneousness of the necessary and sufficient conditions obtained in our new project for n=6 indicates that finding necessary and sufficient conditions in general should be a very hard problem.  相似文献
