N-Substituted and N-unsubstituted 1,3-Oxazolium-5-olates cycloaddition reactions with 3-substituted coumarins

The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of unsymmetrically N-substituted and N-unsubstituted 1,3-oxazolium-5-olates with selected 3-substituted coumarins has been examined. Various types of pyrrole derivatives are isolated and their formation seems to be a function of the regio- and diastereochemistry of the initial cycloaddition step.     

Synthesis and characterization of benzo[c]thiophene analogs incorporating benzo[b]thiophene/1-hexylindole/benzo[b]furan

Synthesis of 1,3-disubstituted benzo[c]thiophene analogs incorporating heterocycles such as benzo[b]thiophene/1-hexylindole/benzo[b]furan and thiophene units is described. Optical and electrochemical studies of the benzo[c]thiophene analogs are also reported.     

Synthesis of 1,3-disubstituted benzo[c]thiophene analogs containing benzo[b]thiophene/benzo[b]pyrrole

The synthesis of 1,3-disubstituted benzo[c]thiophene analogs incorporating benzo[b]thiophene/benzo[b]pyrrole units is described.     

Synthesis of new benzo[b]thieno fused ring systems via transition metal-mediated cyclisations

The compact synthesis of a new ring fused benzo[b]thieno derivative with an embedded nine-membered ring system via ring closing metathesis methodology is described. The preparation of the novel 11H-benzo[b]thieno[2,3-c]pyrrolo[2,3-a]indol-11-one via palladium-mediated oxidative cyclisation of benzo[b]thien-2-oyl indole derivatives is also reported.     

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition reactions of benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxide with azomethine ylides

New pyrrolo derivatives of benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxide have been synthesised via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions. Reaction of benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxide with stabilised azomethine ylides gave products in low yield but high stereoselectivity whereas reaction with non-stabilised azomethine ylides gave high overall yields but low stereoselectivity.     

Domino Knoevenagel hetero-Diels-Alder reactions: a stereoselective synthesis of sugar fused furo[3,2-b]pyrano[4,3-d]pyran derivatives

The O-prenyl derivative of a sugar aldehyde derived from d-glucose undergoes smooth intramolecular domino Knoevenagel hetero-Diels-Alder reactions with 1,3-diones to afford a novel class of carbohydrate analogues, cis-fused furopyranopyrans in good yields with a high degree of chemoselectivity. The stereochemistry of the products was assigned by NMR.     

Multibromo-N-alkylcarbazoles: synthesis, characterization, and their benzo[b]thiophene derivatives

We present an efficient method for the selective bromination of N-alkylcarbazoles using N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) in THF. Four brominated N-alkylcarbazoles including 3-bromo-, 3,6-dibromo-, 1,3,6-tribromo- and 1,3,6,8-tetrabromo-carbazoles were prepared and identified by ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Subsequent cross-coupling of these carbazoles with benzo[b]thien-2-ylboronic acid gave the corresponding benzo[b]thien-2-yl functionalized carbazoles in good yields.     

Synthesis and characterization of oxadisilole fused benzo[b]triphenylene

Palladium-catalyzed [2+2+2] cyclotrimerization reactions between benzyne and oxadisilole fused oxabicyclic alkenes afforded the exo-adducts. Deoxygenation with BF₃·OMe₂ yielded mono- and bis-oxadisilole fused benzo[b]triphenylene. The photophysical properties of the oxadisilole fused benzo[b]triphenylenes were characterized.     

A synthetic approach to new polycyclic ring system of biological interest through domino reaction: indolo[2,3-e][1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine

The title indolo-triazolo-pyrimidines were obtained from 3-azidoindoles and can be used as models for the design of DNA-interactive compounds. Hetero-domino reaction of azidoindoles/pyrroles and acetonitriles constitutes the synthetic entry to annelated 1,2,3-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines.     

One-pot synthesis of 5,6-dihydroxylated benzo[b]furan derivatives

In the presence of sodium iodate and pyridine, several 5,6-dihydroxylated benzo[b]furan derivatives were synthesized via oxidation-Michael addition of β-dicarbonyl compounds with catechols in a one-pot procedure. The final products were confirmed by ESMS, NMR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. The mechanism different from that of electrochemical methods was proposed based on DFT calculation.     

New approaches to the synthesis of benzo[h]pyrroloisoquinoline derivatives

An effective strategy for the synthesis of benzo[h]pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline derivatives has been developed. The process can be described as a one-pot domino reaction that consists of an initial Michael addition, intramolecular cyclization, and subsequent transformations leading to the formation of the desired products. A wide range of structurally diverse hydrogenated benzo[h]pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines were obtained in 34–98% yield. This strategy represents an efficient catalyst-free procedure that allows the synthesis of previously inaccessible compounds.     

Photochromic properties of diarylethene derivatives having chryso[b]thiophene rings

Diarylethene derivatives having one or two chryso[b]thiophene ring(s) have been synthesized. In solution the derivatives underwent photochromism and the derivative with one chryso[b]thiophene ring exhibited photochromism even in the single crystalline phase. The color of the UV irradiated single crystal changed from blue to green by rotation the sample under polarized light.     

Synthesis of new type benzo[b]thiophene fused quinones and their tetracyanoquinodimethane derivatives

A series of new type of benzo[b]thiophene-fused 1,4-benzoquinones and their tetracyanoquinodimethane derivatives were synthesized. The cyclic voltammetric data of new type quinones and tetracyanoquinodimethane derivatives displayed different behavior. All new quinones exhibit two reduction waves corresponding to the radical anion and dianion. On the other hand, most tetracyanoquinodimethane derivatives display a singlewave reduction to the dianion. The benzo[b]thiophene moiety fused tetracyanoquinodimethane derivatives reveal more negative reduction potentials than that of tetracyanoquinodimethane.     

Photochromism of diarylethene derivatives bearing a benzo[b]silole unit

Photochromic benzo[b]silole derivatives, 1-(1,1-dimethyl-2-phenylbenzo[b]silol-3-yl)-2-(2-phenylbenzo[b]thien-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene and 1-(1,1-dimethyl-2-phenylbenzo[b]silol-3-yl)-2-(2-phenyl-1-benzofuran-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene, were synthesized and their photochromic performance was examined in solution.     

A new synthesis of benzo[b]thiophenes utilizing an interrupted Pummerer reaction

A convenient synthesis of 3-arylbenzo[b]thiophenes utilizing an interrupted Pummerer reaction of 2-(1-arylvinyl)phenyl ethyl sulfoxides is described. Thus, treatment of these sulfoxides, which were readily prepared from 2-sulfanylphenyl ketones or 2-fluoro-5-methoxybenzaldehyde, with acetic anhydride at 100 °C afforded 3-arylbenzo[b]thiophenes in reasonable yields.     

Pd/C mediated synthesis of 2-substituted benzo[b]furans/nitrobenzo[b]furans in water

An efficient synthesis of 2-alkyl/aryl substituted benzo[b]furans/nitrobenzo[b]furans in water has been accomplished via Pd/C catalyzed reaction of o-iodophenols with terminal alkynes in the presence of PPh₃, CuI and prolinol. This method can tolerate a variety of functional groups present in the alkynes as well as base labile nitro group in the o-iodophenols. The protocol does not require the use of a phase transfer catalyst or water-soluble phosphine ligands and is free from the use of any organic co-solvent.     

An efficient one-pot synthesis of substituted 2-arylbenzo[b]thiophene derivatives

This communication describes an efficient one-pot procedure for the synthesis of 2-arylbenzo[b]thiophene derivatives via reaction of o-halo or nitro aryl carbonyl compounds with benzyl mercaptans in the presence of an excess of anhydrous K₂CO₃ at elevated temperature.     

Site-specific preparation of 4-substituted-6-fluoro(carboalkoxyl)benzo[b]furans and benzo[b]thiophenes via base-catalyzed cyclization of enyne derivatives

A site-specific synthesis of 4-substituted-6-fluoro(carboalkoxyl)benzo[b]furans and benzo[b]thiophenes is described. The reactions of heterocyclic aromatic aldehydes with a Wittig reagent, followed by Sonogashira reaction with terminal alkynes, and subsequent base-catalyzed cyclization site-specifically provide 4-substituted-6-fluoro(carboalkoxyl)benzo[b]furans and benzo[b]thiophenes in good yields.     

Novel synthesis of benzo[b]carbazoles

A new method was adopted for the synthesis of benzo[b]carbazoles by Claisen condensation followed by Fischer indole cyclization. Newly synthesized benzo[b]carbazoles were treated with ethanol amine in the presence of polyphosphoric acid which leads to the formation of pyrazino carbazoles. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by all spectral means.

The photochemical behavior of several benzo[b]thiophenes 1–4 in neutral solutions or in the presence of primary and tertiary amines has been examined. In most cases, the photoformation of adducts or dimers, rather than cyclisation, has been observed. An unusual photocyclisation of a saturated compound 12 obtained by photolysis of 3 in a primary amine was observed
