This paper presents arguments for the existence and dynamics of one-dimensional odd dark beams of finite length in bulk Kerr nonlinear media. Their characteristic mixed edge–screw phase dislocations force them to steer in space. The modulational stability of these dark beams and one possible interaction scheme are discussed. This paper presents experimental evidence that orthogonally crossed dark soliton stripes form quasi-two-dimensional spatial solitons with a soliton constant equal to that of singly charged optical vortices. Besides the pairs of oppositely charged optical vortex solitons, the snake instability of the dark formation at moderate saturation is found to lead to generation of steering mixed edge–screw phase dislocations with zero total topological charges. An incomplete correlation is discovered between the phase conjugate reflectivity in Feinberg’s Cat conjugator generating a train of regular pulses with the cw incident pump wave and inhibited specular reflectivity from the sample. The frequency chirp within every spike of conjugate wave is shown to affect the efficiency of the secondary phase conjugator generating auxiliary waves in the direction of Fresnel reflection of the incident wave. A simple experimental technique is presented capable of separating the contribution of purely optical Kerr effects from that of thermo-optical effects in the nonlinear response of materials under high-repetition-rate laser irradiation. The technique has been realized by combining the single-beam Z-scan method with the single-beam thermal lens measurement method. We demonstrate this technique by analysing the nonlinear response at 770 nm of CS2 which exhibits cumulative thermal effects when irradiated by very intense femtosecond laser pulses at a 76-MHz repetition rate. 2 , N2, and CO2. For CO2 additional experiments have been performed at reduced pressure and in a molecular beam. By delaying the probe pulse a periodic recovery of the DFWM signal is observed. The period of these transients can be assigned unambiguously to rotational Raman transitions of the ground state within the laser bandwidth. The decay of the transients yields the collisional dephasing of the Raman-induced polarization. At zero delay also optical-field-induced birefringence of electronic nature contributes to the signal. The different time scales of the Raman and electronic effects allow us to estimate their relative strength.
