Based on replica integral equations in the (reference) hypernetted chain approximation we investigate the structural features and phase properties of a dipolar Stockmayer fluid confined to a disordered dipolar matrix. The integral equations are applied to the homogeneous high-temperature phase where the system is globally isotropic. At low densities we find the influence of dipolar interactions between fluid (f) and matrix (m) particles to be surprisingly similar to the previously investigated effect of attractive isotropic (fm) interactions: the critical temperature of the vapor-liquid transition decreases with increasing (fm) coupling, while the critical density increases. The anisotropic nature of the dipolar (fm) interactions turns out to play a more dominant role at high fluid densities where we observe a pronounced sensitivity in the dielectric constant and a strong degree of local orientational ordering of the fluid particles along the local fields generated by the matrix. Moreover, an instability of the dielectric constant, which is a precursor of ferroelectric ordering occurring both in bulk Stockmayer fluids and in fluids in nonpolar matrices, is observed only for very small dipolar (fm) couplings.  相似文献

In this work we develop the concept of an effective potential to obtain the equation of state of polarizable Stockmayer (PSM) fluids. This potential consists of a Lennard-Jones function with appropriate energy and distance parameters that depend on the reduced dipolar moment μ(?) and polarizability α(?). The approach deals accurately with polarizable SM fluids with μ(?)≤2.0 and α(?)≤0.1. However, prediction of second virial coefficients is reliable up to μ(?)≤4.0. When the low-density sphericalized potential is used at moderate and large densities, the effect of the dipole-dipole attraction is overestimated in agreement with an effect previously found in the literature. This effect can be traced back to a frustration mechanism due to the interaction between three and more dipoles. We propose a model to account for this frustration effect and are able to reproduce the vapor-liquid equilibrium of polarizable SM fluids in agreement with simulated results from the literature. Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to show that the effective SM fluid has a radial distribution function very close to that of the true SM system.  相似文献

A systematic investigation on vapor-liquid equilibria (VLEs) of dipolar and quadrupolar fluids is carried out by molecular simulation to develop a new Helmholtz energy contribution for equations of state (EOSs). Twelve two-center Lennard-Jones plus point dipole and point quadrupole model fluids (2CLJDQ) are studied for different reduced dipolar moments micro*2=6 or 12, reduced quadrupolar moments Q*2=2 or 4 and reduced elongations L*=0, 0.505, or 1. Temperatures cover a wide range from about 55% to 95% of the critical temperature of each fluid. The NpT+test particle method is used for the calculation of vapor pressure, saturated densities, and saturated enthalpies. Critical data and the acentric factor are obtained from fits to the simulation data. On the basis of this data, an EOS contribution for the dipole-quadrupole cross-interactions of nonspherical molecules is developed. The expression is based on a third-order perturbation theory, and the model constants are adjusted to the present 2CLJDQ simulation results. When applied to mixtures, the model is found to be in excellent agreement with results from simulation and experiment. The new EOS contribution is also compatible with segment-based EOS, such as the various forms of the statistical associating fluid theory EOS.  相似文献

Using the reference hypernetted chain (RHNC) integral equation theory and an accompanying stability analysis we investigate the structural and phase behaviors of model bidisperse ferrocolloids based on correlations of the homogeneous isotropic high-temperature phase. Our model consists of two species of dipolar hard spheres (DHSs) which dipole moments are proportional to the particle volume. At small packing fractions our results indicate the onset of chain formation, where the (more strongly coupled) A species behaves essentially as a one-component DHS fluid in a background of B particles. At high packing fractions, on the other hand, the RHNC theory indicates the appearance of isotropic-to-ferromagnetic transitions (volume ratios close to one) and demixing transitions (smaller volume ratios). However, contrary with the related case of monodisperse DHS mixtures previously studied by us [Phys. Rev. E 70, 031201 (2004)], none of the present bidisperse systems exhibit demixing within the isotropic phase, rather we observe coupled ferromagnetic/demixing phase transitions.  相似文献

In this work, we develop a simple potential model for polar molecules which represents effectively and accurately the thermodynamics of dilute gases. This potential models dipolar interactions whose nonpolar part is either spherical, as in Stockmayer (SM) molecules, or diatomic, as for 2-center Lennard-Jones molecules (2CLJ). Predictions of the second virial coefficient for SM and polar 2CLJ fluids for various dipole moments and elongations agree very well with results of recent numerical calculations by C. Vega and co-workers (Phys. Chem. Chem Phys. 2002, 4, 3000). The model is used to predict the critical temperature of Stockmayer fluids for variable dipole moment and is applied to HCl as an example of a real polar molecule.  相似文献

The isotropic-nematic spinodals of solutions of rigid spherocylindrical colloids with various shape anisotropies L/D in a wide range from 10 to 60 are investigated by means of Brownian dynamics simulations. To make these simulations feasible, we developed a new event-driven algorithm that takes the excluded volume interactions between particles into account as instantaneous collisions, but neglects the hydrodynamic interactions. This algorithm is applied to dense systems of highly elongated rods and proves to be efficient. The calculated isotropic-nematic spinodals lie between the previously established binodals in the phase diagram and extrapolate for infinitely long rods to Onsager's [Ann. N. Y. Acad. Sci. 51, 627 (1949)] theoretical predictions. Moreover, we investigate the shear induced shifts of the spinodals, qualitatively confirming the theoretical prediction of the critical shear rate at which the two spinodals merge and the isotropic-nematic phase transition ceases to exist.  相似文献

The vapor-liquid coexistence boundaries of fluids composed of particles interacting with highly directional patchy interactions, in addition to an isotropic square well potential, are evaluated using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations combined with the histogram reweighting and finite size scaling methods. We are motivated to study this more complicated model for two reasons. First, it is established that the reduced widths of the metastable vapor-liquid coexistence curve predicted by a model with only isotropic interparticle interactions are much too narrow when compared to the experimental phase behavior of protein solutions. Second, interprotein interactions are well known to be "patchy." Our results show that at a constant total areal density of patches, the critical temperature and the critical density increase monotonically with an increasing number of uniformly spaced patches. The vapor-liquid coexistence curves plotted in reduced coordinates (i.e., the temperature and the density scaled by their respective critical values) are found to be effectively independent of the number of patches, but are much broader than those found for the isotropic models. Our findings for the reduced width of the coexistence curve are almost in quantitative agreement with the available experimental data for protein solutions, stressing the importance of patchiness in this context.  相似文献

We report molecular dynamics simulation results for Stockmayer fluids confined to narrow slitlike pores with structureless, nonconducting walls. The translational and rotational dynamics of the dipolar particles have been investigated by calculating autocorrelation functions, diffusion coefficients, and relaxation times for various pore widths (five or less particle diameters) and directions parallel and perpendicular to the walls. The dynamic properties of the confined systems are compared to bulk properties, where corresponding bulk and pore states at the same temperature and chemical potential are determined in parallel grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the dynamic behavior inside the pore depends on the distance from the walls and can be strongly anisotropic even in globally isotropic systems. This concerns especially the particles in the surface layers close to the walls, where the single particle and collective dipolar relaxation resemble that of true two-dimensional dipolar fluids with different in-plane and out-of-plane relaxations. On the other hand, bulklike relaxation is observed in the pore center of sufficiently wide pores.  相似文献

Dispersions of magnetic nanoparticles (ferrofluids) have been for a long time taken as examples of dipolar fluids. Theoretical papers conclude now that an important parameter is the ratio of the anisotropic attractions (dipolar ones) to the isotropic attractions (Van der Waals ones). It is confirmed by the recent experimental results concerning the behavior of small magnetic particles in bulk or confined 2D geometries.  相似文献

The effect of periodic surface roughness on the behavior of confined soft sphere fluids is investigated using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Rough pores are constructed by taking the prototypical slit-shaped pore and introducing unidirectional sinusoidal undulations on one wall. For the above geometry our study reveals that the solvation force response can be phase shifted in a controlled manner by varying the amplitude of roughness. At a fixed amplitude of roughness, a, the solvation force for pores with structured walls was relatively insensitive to the wavelength of the undulation, lambda for 2.3/=0.5. The predictions of the superposition approximation, where the solvation force response for the rough pores is deduced from the solvation force response of the slit-shaped pores, was in excellent agreement with simulation results for the structured pores and for lambda/sigma(ff)>/=7 in the case of smooth walled pores. Grand potential computations illustrate that interactions between the walls of the pore can alter the pore width corresponding to the thermodynamically stable state, with wall-wall interactions playing an important role at smaller pore widths and higher amplitudes of roughness.  相似文献

In this work, an equation of state (EoS) is developed to predict accurately the phase behavior of ionic liquid + CO2 systems based on the truncated perturbed chain polar statistical associating fluid theory (tPC-PSAFT) EoS. This EoS accounts explicitly for the dipolar interactions between ionic liquid molecules, the quadrupolar interactions between CO2 molecules, and the Lewis acid-base type of association between the ionic liquid and the CO2 molecules. Physically meaningful model pure-component parameters for ionic liquids are estimated based on literature data. All experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium data are correlated with a single linearly temperature-dependent binary interaction parameter. The ability of the model to describe accurately carbon dioxide solubility in various 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids with different alkyl chain lengths and different anions at pressures from 0 to 100 MPa and carbon dioxide fractions from 0 to 75 mol % is demonstrated. In all cases, good agreement with experimental data is obtained.

The dipolar hard sphere fluid is a useful model for a polar fluid. Some years ago, the second virial coefficient, B(2), of this fluid was obtained as a series expansion in the inverse temperature or (dipole strength) by Keesom. Little work on this problem seems to have been done since that time. Using a result of Chan and Henderson for the spherical average of the Boltzmann factor of this fluid, more complete results are obtained for B(2). The more complete results are more negative than the Keesom series, as one would expect, but his expansion is remarkably accurate. This method can be used to obtain the second virial coefficient of the dipolar Lennard-Jones (Stockmayer) or dipolar Yukawa fluids.  相似文献

The perturbed chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) is extended to polar molecular fluids, namely dipolar and quadrupolar fluids. The extension is based on the perturbation theory for polar fluids by Stell and co-workers. Appropriate expressions are proposed for dipole-dipole, quadrupole-quadrupole, and dipole-quadrupole interactions. Furthermore, induced dipole interactions are calculated explicitly in the model. The new polar PC-SAFT model is relatively complex; for this purpose, a truncated polar PC-SAFT model is proposed using only the leading term in the polynomial expansion for polar interactions. The new model is used for the calculation of thermodynamic properties of various quadrupolar pure fluids. In all cases, the agreement between experimental data and model predictions is very good.  相似文献

Performance of the SAFT-VR equation of state developed for the hard sphere based simple fluids, namely the square-well, Sutherland and Yukawa fluids, is examined by comparing its results with simulation data and an augmented van der Waals (vdW) equation based on a Yukawa (Y) reference. Its shown that both for the equilibrium vapor-liquid data and data along selected isotherms in the liquid and supercritical fluid phases the vdW(Y) equation provides better results, particularly when going to lower temperatures.  相似文献

A statistical associating fluid theory for potential of variable range has been recently developed to model dipolar fluids (SAFT-VR+D) [Zhao and McCabe, J. Chem. Phys. 2006, 125, 104504]. The SAFT-VR+D equation explicitly accounts for dipolar interactions and their effect on the thermodynamics and structure of a fluid by using the generalized mean spherical approximation (GMSA) to describe a reference fluid of dipolar square-well segments. In this work, we apply the SAFT-VR+D approach to real mixtures of dipolar fluids. In particular, we examine the high-pressure phase diagram of hydrogen sulfide+n-alkane binary mixtures. Hydrogen sulfide is modeled as an associating spherical molecule with four off-center sites to mimic hydrogen bonding and an embedded dipole moment (micro) to describe the polarity of H2S. The n-alkane molecules are modeled as spherical segments tangentially bonded together to form chains of length m, as in the original SAFT-VR approach. By using simple Lorentz-Berthelot combining rules, the theoretical predictions from the SAFT-VR+D equation are found to be in excellent overall agreement with experimental data. In particular, the theory is able to accurately describe the different types of phase behavior observed for these mixtures as the molecular weight of the alkane is varied: type III phase behavior, according to the scheme of classification by Scott and Konynenburg, for the H2S+methane system, type IIA (with the presence of azeotropy) for the H2S+ethane and+propane mixtures; and type I phase behavior for mixtures of H2S and longer n-alkanes up to n-decane. The theory is also able to predict in a qualitative manner the solubility of hydrogen sulfide in heavy n-alkanes.  相似文献

A method for the direct simulation of the surface tension is examined. The technique is based on the thermodynamic route to the interfacial tension and makes use of the expanded ensemble simulation method for the calculation of the free energy difference between two inhomogeneous systems with the same number of particles, temperature, and volume, but different interfacial area. The method is completely general and suitable for systems with either continuous or discontinuous interactions. The adequacy of the expanded ensemble method is assessed by computing the interfacial tension of the planar vapor-liquid interface of Lennard-Jones, Lennard-Jones dimers, Gay-Berne, and square-well model fluids; in the latter, the interactions are discontinuous and the present method does not exhibit the asymmetry of other related methods, such as the test area. The expanded ensemble simulation results are compared with simulation data obtained from other techniques (mechanical and test area) with overall good agreement.  相似文献
