The spin states of a 2D film with a strong easy-plane anisotropy and single-ion tilted anisotropy, the axis of which forms a certain angle with the normal to the film plane are investigated. In this system, an angular ferromagnetic phase, a spatially inhomogeneous state, and a quadrupole phase can be formed; the realization of these states noticeably depends on the degree of tilted anisotropy.

We investigate the spin states of a 2D film exhibiting easy-axis anisotropy and a strong single-ion inclined anisotropy whose axis forms a certain angle with the normal to the film surface. Such a system may have an angular ferromagnetic phase, a spatially inhomogeneous state, and a quadrupole phase, whose realization depends substantially on the inclined anisotropy and the orientation of the wavevector in the film plane.

In this paper we study the quantum phase transition and low temperature behavior in a square lattice quantum two-dimensional XY model with single-ion anisotropy and spin S=1. Starting with the Villain representation, a Landau-Ginzburg expression is written. The large D phase is studied using the bond operator formalism.

A model of a non-Heisenberg ferromagnet is considered in which the single-ion anisotropy constant is linearly dependent on temperature. The conditions are found under which phase transitions occur in 2D and 3D non-Heisenberg ferromagnets as the temperature is varied. It is shown that, in the case where the biquadratic interaction is dominant, quadrupole states can occur in the system, which are specified by the orientation of the quadrupole moment. As the temperature is varied, a phase transition between quadrupole states can occur in 2D magnets. Depending on the ratios between the material constants, this transition can be either a second-order phase transition with the continuously changing orientation of the principal axes of the quadrupole moment tensor or a first-order phase transition with hysteresis through a state with a nonhomogeneous distribution of the principal axes of the quadrupole moment tensor. In 3D magnets, the phase transition between quadrupole states is of the first order with hysteresis. Phase diagrams of the system are constructed.

Basing on the two-spin-per-site Heisenberg model, the effect of single-ion uniaxial anisotropy on the phase diagrams of magnetic system in the presence of internal spin fluctuation has been investigated by use of the mean field theory. It was found that single-ion uniaxial anisotropy has important effect on the phase digrams. In the ferromagnetic case (J3>0) the positive single-ion uniaxial anisotropies (D) suppress the internal spin fluctuation and raise the phase trasition temperature, and negative single-ion uniaxial anisotropies (D) increase the internal spin fluctuation and reduce the phase trasition temperature. In the antiferromagnetic case (J3<0), there exist two critical values Jc1 and Jc2 (|Jc2|<|Jc1|) in the positive D values. In the |J3|<|Jc2| range intra-spin exchange coupling prevails inter-spin exchange coupling, the positive D values suppress the internal spin fluctuation and raise the phase transition temperature. In the |J3|>|Jc1| range the two sub-spins behave as a rigid spin and the positive D values make the reduction of the phase transition temperature. We also observe that the larger D values make the range of internal spin fluctuation to move towards the larger |J3| range.

In this paper we study the quantum phase transition in a three-dimensional XY model with single-ion anisotropy D and spin S=1. The low D phase is studied using the self consistent harmonic approximation, and the large D phase using the bond operator formalism. We calculate the critical value of the anisotropy parameter where a transition occurs from the large-D phase to the Néel phase. We present the behavior of the energy gap, in the large-D phase, as a function of the temperature. In the large D region, a longitudinal magnetic field induces a phase transition from the singlet to the antiferromagnetic state, and then from the AFM one to the paramagnetic state.

A linear cluster mean-field approximation is used to study the magnetic properties of the Ising ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic superlattice, which is composed of a spin-1/2 ferromagnetic monolayer and a spin-1 antiferromagnetic monolayer with a single-ion anisotropy alternatively. By using the transfer matrix method, we calculate the magnetization and the initial magnetic susceptibility as functions of temperature for different interlayer coupling, single-ion anisotropy. We summarize the changing behaviors of the spin structure in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers and the characteristics of the corresponding magnetic susceptibilities, give the transition temperature as a function of the interlayer exchange coupling for different single-ion anisotropy, and analyze the features of the magnetization and the magnetic susceptibility.

We analyze the influence of cooperative effects on the magnetic properties and spin crossover between the high-spin (HS) term S = 5/2 and low-spin (LS) term S = 1/2 in Mott–Hubbard dielectrics with 3d5 ions under high pressures. Two cooperation mechanisms (superexchange interaction and effective interaction via the elastic system) are considered. The sign of the exchange interaction changes because of the crossover from the antiferromagnetic in the HS state to the ferromagnetic in the LS state. In view of the large difference between the ionic radii of the HS and LS states, the systems with spin crossover acquire an additional strong coupling via the elastic system. Using the Hubbard operator representation and considering the electronic states of the two terms simultaneously, we obtain the effective Hamiltonian with allowance for the cooperative effects. The magnetic phase diagram and the spin crossover are investigated in the mean field approximation. It is shown that the inclusion of cooperative effects at low temperatures leads to a first-order phase transition between the antiferromagnetic HS state and the ferromagnetic LS state. At higher temperatures, more complicated sequences of phase transitions are possible upon an increase in pressure, including the HS paramagnet–HS antiferromagnet–LS paramagnet and HS antiferromagnet–LS paramagnet–LS ferromagnet transitions.

Phase transitions in the three-dimensional diluted Ising antiferromagnet in an applied magnetic field are analyzed numerically. It is found that random magnetic field in a system with spin concentration below a certain threshold induces a crossover from second-order phase transition to first-order transition to a new phase characterized by a spin-glass ground state and metastable energy states at finite temperatures.

In this paper, we study spin currents, generated by a magnetic field gradient, in the two-dimensional XY model with single-ion anisotropy and coupled to phonons in the large D phase. The spin conductivity is calculated, at zero temperature, using the Kubo formula.

Pyrochlore magnets can be a unique platform to demonstrate numerous important concepts and applications of frustrated magnetic physics in modern condensed matter physics. Most works on pyrochlore magnets deal with the interacting spin-1/2 local moments, while much less works have studied the spin-1 systems. We here review the physics with interacting spin-1 local moments on the pyrochlore lattice to illustrate the potentially interesting physics associated with spin-1 magnets. The generic pyrochlore spin-1 model includes the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction, the Dzyaloshinskii– Moriya interaction and the single-ion spin anisotropy. The global phase diagram of this generic spin model is reviewed, and the relation between different quantum phases in the phase diagram is clarified. The critical properties of the transition from the parent quantum paramagnet to the proximate orders are discussed. The presence of quantum order by disorder in the parts of the ordered phases is analyzed. The elementary excitations with respect to the ground states are further reviewed, and the topological natures of these excitations are carefully addressed. The materials’ relevance of the spin-1 pyrochlore magnets are finally reviewed. This review may provide insights about the interesting spin-1 local moments on frustrated systems.

Vanadium spinels (ZnV2O4, MgV2O4, and CdV2O4) exhibit a sequence of structural and magnetic phase transitions, reflecting the interplay of lattice, orbital, and spin degrees of freedom. We offer a theoretical model taking into account the relativistic spin-orbit interaction, collective Jahn-Teller effect, and spin frustration. Below the structural transition, vanadium ions exhibit ferro-orbital order and the magnet is best viewed as two sets of antiferromagnetic chains with a single-ion Ising anisotropy. Magnetic order, parametrized by two Ising variables, appears at a tetracritical point.

In this paper the first-principles calculations within local spin density approximation (LSDA)+U show that BiFeO3 experiences a mixed phase state with P4mm structure being the intermediate phase before the pressure of phase transition is reached. The critical pressure for the insulator-metal transition (IMT) is found to be about 50 GPa. A pressure induced crossover of high-spin states and low-spin states is observed close to the IMT pressure in R3c structure. The LSDA+U calculations account well for the mechanism of the IMT and crossover of spin states predicted in recent experiment (Ref.[1]).

A quantum spin Heisenberg model with exchange and single-ion anisotropy is investigated by variational cumulant expansion method. Easy-axis and easy-plane cases are considered separately. Dependence of critical temperature and type of ordered phase on anisotropy parameters are examined in full detail. Thermodynamic functions are calculated for some instances.

The interface magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) in Fe/CeH(2) multilayers has been site and element-specifically isolated by combining soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (SXRMS) with soft x-ray standing waves. Using the different temperature evolutions of the Fe and Ce SXRMS contributions, following an in-plane to out-of-plane spin reorientation, the interface Fe 3d MAE and Ce 4f single-ion anisotropy have been separated. The results demonstrate that the transition metal interface MAE dominates the spin reorientation while the rare-earth contribution becomes significant only at much lower temperatures.

Classical uniaxially anisotropic Heisenberg and XY antiferromagnets in a field along the easy axis on a square lattice are analysed, applying ground state considerations and Monte Carlo techniques. The models are known to display antiferromagnetic and spin-flop phases. In the Heisenberg case, a single-ion anisotropy is added to the XXZ antiferromagnet, enhancing or competing with the uniaxial exchange anisotropy. Its effect on the stability of non-collinear structures of biconical type is studied. In the case of the anisotropic XY antiferromagnet, the transition region between the antiferromagnetic and spin-flop phases is found to be dominated by degenerate bidirectional fluctuations. The phase diagram is observed to resemble closely that of the XXZ antiferromagnet without single-ion anisotropy.

The mixed spin-(1/2, 1) Ising model on two fully frustrated triangles-in-triangles lattices is exactly solved with the help of the generalized star-triangle transformation, which establishes a rigorous mapping correspondence with the equivalent spin- 1/2 Ising model on a triangular lattice. It is shown that the mutual interplay between the spin frustration and single-ion anisotropy gives rise to various spontaneously ordered and disordered ground states, which differ mainly in an occurrence probability of the non-magnetic spin state of the integer-valued decorating spins. We have convincingly evidenced a possible coexistence of the spontaneous long-range order with a partial disorder within the striking ordered–disordered ground state, which manifests itself through a non-trivial criticality at finite temperatures as well. A rather rich critical behavior including the order-from-disorder effect and reentrant phase transitions with either two or three successive critical points is also found.
