The dynamic magnetic susceptibility spectrum in a single-crystal sample of the intermediate-valence compound Sm0.67Y0.33S is studied by inelastic neutron scattering with neutron momentum transfer and sample temperatures varying over wide ranges. Two coupled collective modes have been found in the spectrum. Unlike the higher energy mode, whose intensity approximately follows the form factor of Sm2+, the lower energy mode exhibits a stronger angular dependence than could be expected from the form factor for the localized f electrons. The total intensity of the inelastic component of the magnetic response decreases with increasing temperature; this is accompanied by the appearance of a broad quasi-elastic signal of a magnetic nature at significantly lower temperatures than follows from the calculated intensities of the transitions within the excited multiplet of the Sm2+ ion. An analysis of the observed features allows the suggestion to be made that the fine structure of the magnetic excitation spectrum in (Sm,Y)S is associated with the formation of an exciton-like intermediate-valence state on Sm ions rather than with the crystal-electric-field effects.  相似文献

We have observed a quasi-elastic contribution to the spectrum of the transverse spin fluctuations Sperp;(Q, ω), perpendicular to an applied magnetic field in the easy plane of the one-dimensional ferromagnet CsNiF3. According to the present theoretical understanding this contribution is due solely to soliton quasi-particles and it should not contain two-magnon scattering. The observed dependence on momentum transfer is as expected for soliton scattering with zero intensity at qc = 0 rising through a maximum with increasing qc.  相似文献

The quasi-elastic light scattering of the superionic conductors, (ZrO2)1?x (YO1.5)x (x = 0, 0.18, 0.33) has been studied in the region of frequency shift below 2.5 cm-1. The quasi-elastic scattering far more intense than the Brillouin scattering has been found for a sample with x = 0.18. From the x-dependence of the intensity, it is shown that the ionic diffusion is responsible for the quasi-elastic scattering. The temperature variations of the intensity and the spectral shapes are interpreted in accordance with the macroscopic conductivity data, in terms of a model in which the barrier height distribution is taken into account.  相似文献

The momentum distribution of the neutron in 2H was determined in the range 0 to 365 MeV/c and in 3He in the range 0–295 MeV/c, by quasi-elastic scattering of 667 MeV/c protons. The measurements were analyzed by the plane wave impulse approximation and a correction was made for multiple scattering in the target nucleons. The results for 2H fit the Hulthén-Yamaguchi wave function quite well but show deviations similar to those found by other workers. For 3He there are no previously published measurements for comparison, but the results fit several expressions for the wave function, proposed for reasons of plausibility and analytical tractability, with parameters close to those obtained by electron scattering. The momentum distribution in 3He has a small but significant dip around 100 MeV/c which is not found in any of the theoretical expressions.  相似文献

The dynamic magnetic response of the intermediate-valence compound EuCu2Si2 has been studied using inelastic neutron scattering. At low temperatures, strong renormalization of the 7 F 07 F 1 spin-orbit transition energy is detected; it is likely to be related to partial delocalization of the f electrons of Eu. An increase in the temperature increases the valence instability of europium and results in further changes in the magnetic excitation spectrum parameters and the appearance of an intense quasi-elastic component.  相似文献

The dynamics of hydrogen atoms in the hydrogen bonds of molecular dimers in dodecanoic acid (c phase) have been studied by quasi-elastic neutron scattering and pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance. Q-dependence measurements of the intensity of the quasi-elastic peak have established that the hydrogen atoms move along a line connecting the two oxygen atoms in the hydrogen bond. The correlation time for this motion has been studied by temperature dependence measurements of the width of the quasi-elastic line and of the proton spin-lattice relaxation time,T 1. These studies reveal the quantum mechanical nature of the dynamics in the low temperature region. The dynamical parameters which characterise the motion have been determined by fitting the data to a model which invokes phonon assisted tunnelling. The frequency dependence ofT 1 at low temperature is anomalous because the gradient of the ln(T 1) vs 1/T curve is dependent on the applied magnetic field.  相似文献

In order to directly observe neutron scattering by heavy fermion quasiparticles at low temperatures, a CeRu2Si2 single crystal has been studied by the small-angle neutron scattering method. In the experiment, neutron scattering is observed at T = 0.85 K for momentum transfers q ≤ 0.04 Å?1, which is treated as the orbital component of magnetic scattering by heavy fermion quasiparticles. It has been found that the application of a magnetic field H = 1 T leads to both an increase in the observed scattering and its anisotropy with respect to the field direction. Moreover, measurements in the magnetic field reveal additional scattering for q > 0.04 Å?1, which is well described by a Lorentzian and is interpreted as neutron magnetic scattering by spin-density fluctuations with a correlation radius Rc ≈ 30 Å.  相似文献

The molecular dynamics of C60 crystals was studied by inelastic neutron scattering at T=290 K, i.e., above the first-order phase transition temperature (TC≈260 K), in the region of free C60-spheroid rotation in the lattice. The energy broadening of the original neutron spectrum 2Γ0≈0.1 meV for a momentum transfer q=2 Å?1 is in agreement with NMR data on the rotational relaxation time of the molecule τ~10?11 s~ ?Γ0. This effect was observed to decrease in magnetic fields H=2.5–4.5 kOe applied along the scattering vector: ΓH=0.7Γ0. The slowing-down of the molecular rotation is discussed in connection with the interaction of a magnetic field with the molecular currents, which fluctuate when the C60 cage rotates.  相似文献

We have studied saturated solutions of ZnCl2 (and NiCl2) in D2O by time-of-flight quasi-elastic and inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy. Spectra were taken at room temperature as a function of transferred momentum. We find that ionic diffusion in these solutions is best described by a crystal vacancy diffusion model. We also find evidence of collective excitations in the region of ~ 20 meV.  相似文献

Neutron scattering measurements on a Cu 8 % Mn alloy fail to show the normal critical slowing down of spins associated with sharp magnetic phase transition. However, the quasi-elastic scattering width is found to approach an approximately constant q-independent value at temperatures around that of the maximum in the susceptibility, following a continuous process of freezing of spins. An important observation from the measurements is that the temperature of the maximum in χ depends on the time constant of the probe; being 39 ± 1 K in the a.c. susceptibility measurements (τ ~ 10-2s) against 52 ± 3 K obtained from the neutron scattering results (τ ~ 10-11s).  相似文献

The spectrum of spin fluctuations in the stacked-triangular antiferromagnet YMnO3 was studied above the Néel temperature using both unpolarized and polarized inelastic neutron scattering. We find an in-plane and an out-of-plane excitation. The in-plane mode has two components just above T N : a resolution-limited central peak and a Debye-like contribution. The quasi-elastic fluctuations have a line width that increases with q as Dq z and the dynamical exponent z = 2.3. The out-of-plane fluctuations have a gap at the magnetic zone center and do not show any appreciable q dependence at small wave vectors.  相似文献

Results are presented of studies of the 154Sm1?x SrxMnO3 system using neutron powder diffraction and small-angle polarized neutron scattering. An analysis of the neutron diffraction spectra showed that at T < 180 K these exhibit typical Jahn-Teller distortions of the manganese-oxygen octahedrons which persist under further cooling and on transition of the sample to a metallic magnetically ordered state. The magnetic contribution to the diffraction is satisfactorily described using the (A x (A y )F z ) model and is interpreted as the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The exaggerated widths of the diffraction lines indicate an appreciable contribution from microdeformations evidently associated with the inhomogeneity of the system. Small-angle polarized neutron scattering showed that the Sm system for x = 0.4 and 0.25 is magnetically inhomogeneous in the low-temperature phase. Ferromagnetic correlations occur on scales of around 200 Å and having dimensions greater than 1000 Å which, combined with the temperature hysteresis of the magnetic small-angle scattering intensity observed for an x = 0.4 sample in the low-temperature phase, suggests that the transition is of a percolation nature.  相似文献

The integrated quasi-elastic neutron scattering intensity of NbH0.13 has been measured at 235°C over a large momentum transfer range (0.6 < K < 7 A?-1). In the high temperaturephase a deviation from a simple Debye-Waller factor governed intensity dependence has been observed.  相似文献

The stiffness of spin waves in the Fe0.75Co0.25Si helimagnet with the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction in a state fully magnetized by an external field has been measured by the small-angle neutron scattering method. It has been shown that the dispersion of magnons in this state is anisotropic because the neutron scattering pattern consists of two circles for neutrons with obtaining and losing the magnon energy, respectively. The centers of the circles are shifted by the momentum transfer oriented along the applied magnetic field H and equal to the wave vector of the spiral ±ks measured in inverse nanometers. The radius of the circles is directly related to the stiffness of spin waves and depends on the magnitude of the magnetic field. It has been shown that the stiffness of spin waves A for the helimagnet is equal to 46.0 meV Å2 at T = 0 K and decreases weakly (by 20%) with increasing temperature up to the critical value Tc = 38 K.  相似文献

We have studied the magnetic cluster compound Nb6F15 which has an odd number of 15 valence electrons per (Nb6F12)3+ cluster core, as a function of temperature using nuclear magnetic resonance, magnetic susceptibility, electron magnetic resonance and neutron powder diffraction. Nuclear magnetic resonance of the 19F nuclei shows two lines corresponding to the apical Fa?a nucleus, and to the inner Fi nuclei. The temperature dependence of the signal from the Fi nuclei reveals an antiferromagnetic ordering at T < 5 K, with a hyperfine field of ~2 mT. Magnetic susceptibility exhibits a Curie–Weiss behavior with T N ~5 K, and μ eff ~1.57 μB close to the expected theoretical value for one unpaired electron (1.73 μB). Electron magnetic resonance linewidth shows a transition at 5 K. Upon cooling from 10 to 1.4 K, the neutron diffraction shows a decrease in the intensity of the low-angle diffuse scattering below Q ~0.27 Å?1. This decrease is consistent with emergence of magnetic order of large magnetic objects (clusters). This study shows that Nb6F15 is paramagnetic at RT and undergoes a transition to antiferromagnetic order at 5 K. This unique antiferromagnetic ordering results from the interaction between magnetic spins delocalized over each entire (Nb6F 12 i )3+ cluster core, rather than the common magnetic ordering.  相似文献

Results of measuring small-angle neutron scattering and neutron depolarization in a Ni49.1Mn29.4Ga21.5 single crystal in the temperature range 15<T<400 K and in the range of magnetic fields 0<H<4.5 kOe are presented. The characteristic temperatures of the alloy were found to be as follows: T C=373.7 K and the martensite transition temperature T m=301–310 K. The magnetic critical scattering at T C and the scattering at T<T C were adequately described by the relationship I m=A(q 22)?2 (q is the transferred wave vector and R c=1/κ is the correlation radius), and the temperature dependences of the A and R c scattering parameters were determined. Left-right asymmetry was observed at 150<T< T m in the scattering of neutrons polarized along or opposite to the applied field. This asymmetry was due to the inelastic magnetic interaction of neutrons in the sample. The magnetization of the alloy at T m, critical scattering at T?T C, anomalies in scattering, and the softening of magnetic excitations at 150 <T<T m are discussed.  相似文献

This paper has presented neutron spectroscopy data on the dynamics of light water molecules adsorbed in the cation exchanger (ion-exchange resin) SGK-7 and on the surface of aerosils (highly dispersed pyrogenic silica) with different levels of hydration. The measurements have been performed on a DIN-2PI spectrometer (Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, Russia). The characteristics of the diffusive and vibrational motions of adsorbed water molecules have been determined from the experimental neutron scattering spectra. The data obtained in the quasi-elastic neutron scattering region have been analyzed using a model accounting for the effects of restricted translational and rotational diffusion. The results have demonstrated a significant decrease in the diffusion mobility of adsorbed water molecules as compared to conventional (bulk) water. In particular, the self-diffusion coefficient decreases several times, and the diffusion rate is the lower, the smaller is the thickness of the hydration layer. The dependences of the intensity and half-width of the quasi-elastic scattering peak on the magnitude of the neutron momentum transfer q in the scattering process exhibit a nonmonotonic character. This indicates manifestation of the effects of restricted translational diffusion, rotational diffusion, and jump diffusion. The partial distributions of vibrational frequencies of hydrogen atoms of water molecules adsorbed by the cation exchanger and aerosils have been obtained from the inelastic neutron scattering data.  相似文献

The possibility of superfluidity or superconductivity in neutron or proton subsystems in the nuclear-matter region in neutron stars is investigated. The energy gap and corresponding critical temperature and critical magnetic field is calculated or estimated as function of density or Fermi momentum. In the calculations are used reaction matrix elements calculated earlier by means of Brueckner theory by the author. The final results indicate that neutron superfluidity, corresponding specifically toS-state pairing, may exist in a low-density shell in the nuclear-matter region of a neutron star. There is probably anisotropic neutron superfluidity, corresponding to the3 P 2 or the singletD state, for higher densities. Superfluidity or superconductivity, corresponding toS-state pairing for the proton subsystem, is quite likely in most of the nuclear-matter region. The expected temperatures and magnetic fields in neutron stars seem to be well below the estimated critical temperatures or critical magnetic fields corresponding to the calculated values of the energy gap. However, similar methods have earlier predicted a much too high critical temperature for liquid3He.  相似文献

The small-angle neutron scattering energy spectra of the Zn0.55Mn0.45Fe2O4 ferrite are analyzed at different temperatures (both below and above T C ? 390 K) and scattering angles. The thermal expansion coefficient α(T) is measured in the temperature range 80–600 K. It is revealed that inelastic neutron scattering is governed not only by spin waves of the Holstein-Primakoff type but also by the substantial contribution of additional long-wavelength magnetic excitations. The physical nature of these low-energy magnetic excitations is discussed.  相似文献
