It has been established by electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel that the protein component of the lipopolysaccharide-protein complex ofYersinia pseudotuberculosis consists of two poly-peptides with molecular weights of 42,000–45,000 and 18,000–20,000. These polypeptides have been detected in the cell wall ofY. pseudotuberculosis as the main components. Protein fractions B-2 and B-3, differing with respect to solubility in phenol, were isolated from the LPPC ofY. pseudotuberculosis by extraction with hot 45% phenol. These protein fractions had the same polypeptide composition, which is characteristic for membrane proteins. B-3 included the LPS component and B-2 contained lipid A or fragments of it as impurity. The lipopolysaccharide-protein complex (LPPC) fromY. pseudotuberculosis isolated by extraction with trichloroacetic acid has been investigated by the methods of gel permeation chromatography, light scattering, and viscometry. The molecular-mass distributions of aggregates of the LPPC in water, 0.03 M Tris-HCl buffer (pH 8) and 0.1 M sodium chloride have been determined. A dependence of the polydispersity and dimensions of the aggregates on the concentration of the polymer and on the ionic strength of the solvent has been shown. A highly purified glucose isomerase with a specific activity 23.5 times greater than that of a homogenate of the mycelium has been obtained fromStreptomyces atratus by methods of homogenization from the freeze-dried biomass, heat treatment (70°C, 10 min), ion-exchange chromatography, and gel filtration. The yield of enzyme on the initial biomass was 51.8%. The molecular mass of the enzyme has been determined by various methods as 160 kDa but in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate in thin-layer PAG it amounts to 40 kDa.Institute of Microbiology, Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR, Tashkent. A characterization of the histones of two varieties of the cotton plant,Gossypium hirsutum andG. barbadense, has been given with the aid of various electrophoretic systems. Their molecular weights have been determined. An analysis has been made of the cleavage of histone H1 at tyrosine residues. Summary The phospholipid complexes of the seeds ofErysimum diffusum andE. sylvestris have been investigated. It has been found that the amount of phospholipids in the seeds ofE. diffusum is lower than in those ofE. sylvestris, but their qualitative compositions are similar. The fatty-acid compositions of the triglycerides and of the total phospholipids of the two plants investigated have been studied. An N-arylphosphatidylethanolamine has been isolated from the total phospholipids of the cotton plant of variety S-6029. The composition and the position distribution of the fatty-acid radicals has been studied with the aid of enzymatic hydrolysis with phospholipase A1 (from the fungusRhisophus microsporus UzLT-1) and by alkaline and acid hydrolyses. From the results obtained, the possible molecular composition of the N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine has been calculated by Coleman's method. The molecular mass (Mr) of highly purified glucose isomerase fromStreptomyces atratus has been determined. The native glucose isomerase, which has affinity for xylose, consists of an oligomeric protein containing 1552 amino acid residues and formed of four subunits. The dimeric sesquiterpene lactone mikagoyanolide (I) has been isolated from the plantTanacetopsis mucronata. The spatial structure of (I) has been determined by the x-ray structural method (R=0.086, 1161 reflections). Summary Spectroscopic investigations in the UV region of the phenolcarboxylic acids that we have isolated from the leaves ofCynara scolymus have been carried out. It has been found that:1. Free caffeic acid can be distinguished from its esters by the changes in the UV spectra under the influence of sodium ethoxide and sodium acetate.2. An o-dihydroxy grouping in esters can be detected from the bathochromic shift observed with boric acid in the presence of sodium acetate.3.
