Switchable binary polymer brushes grafted to Si-wafers were prepared from hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer components. When exposed to solvents, either the hydrophobic or the hydrophilic component extends in to the liquid phase, depending on the polarity of the solvent. The hydrophilic component was poly-2-vinylpyridine; the hydrophobic component was made photocrosslinkable in that a polystyrene copolymer containing a photodimerizing chromophore was used. In this system surfaces differing in water contact angle between 60° and 100° can be produced by variation of the solvent. The chromophore was phenylindene, which forms crosslinks upon direct UV-irradiation. Therefore, the polystyrene component can be fixed in the extended or collapsed state. It will be shown that by irradiation through an appropriate mask, surfaces can be structured and the structures fixed. In both the systems structural patterns differing in surface properties were produced and fixed photochemically.  相似文献

The forces between hydrophobic surfaces with physisorbed DNA are markedly and irreversibly altered by exposure to DNA/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) mixtures. In this colloidal probe atomic force microscopy study of the interactions between a hydrophobic polystyrene particle and an octadecyltrimethylethoxysilane-modified mica surface in sodium bromide solutions, we measure distinct changes in colloidal forces depending on the existence and state of an adsorbed layer of DNA or CTAB-DNA complexes. For bare hydrophobic surfaces, a monotonically attractive approach curve and very large adhesion are observed. When DNA is adsorbed at low bulk concentrations, a long-range repulsive force dominates the approach, but on retraction some adhesion persists and DNA bridging is clearly observed. When the DNA solution is replaced with a CTAB-DNA mixture at relative low CTAB concentration, the length scale of the repulsive force decreases, the adhesion due to hydrophobic interactions greatly decreases, and bridging events disappear. Finally, when the surface is rinsed with NaBr solution, the length scale of the repulsive interaction increases modestly, and only a very tiny adhesion remains. These pronounced changes in the force behavior are consistent with CTAB-induced DNA compaction accompanied by increased DNA adsorption, both of which are partially irreversible.  相似文献

Hollow polymer microparticles with a single opening on the surface were formed by freeze-drying aqueous polymer colloids swollen with solvent. The results show that the particle morphology is due to phase separation in the polymer emulsion droplets upon freezing in liquid nitrogen, and that morphological changes are driven largely by lowering interfacial free energy. The effects of added surfactant, volume fraction of solvent, type of solvent, and processing conditions on the particle morphology were examined and compared to theoretical predictions. The dried hollow particles were resuspended in a dispersing media and exposed to a second swelling solvent to close the surface opening and form microcapsules. The interfacial free energy difference between the inside and outside surfaces is the driving force for closing the hole on the surface. The emulsification/freeze-drying technique can be used to encapsulate hydrophilic additives in the core of the microcapsules, demonstrating the potential of the technique in controlled-release applications.  相似文献

Associating polymers are hydrophilic long-chain molecules containing a small number of hydrophobic groups, and act as flocculants in aqueous suspensions. The effects of associating and nonassociating polymers on viscosity behavior are studied for silica suspensions. Since flocculation is induced by polymer bridging, the viscosity behavior is converted from Newtonian to shear-thinning profiles. The additions of surfactant cause an increase in viscosity for suspensions prepared with associating polymer, whereas the flow behavior of suspensions with nonassociating polymer is not significantly influenced. In adsorption of associating polymers onto silica particles, the chain may adopt a conformation with a water-soluble backbone attached to the particle surfaces. The hydrophobic groups extending from the chains adsorbed onto different particles can form a micelle by association with surfactant. Therefore, the bridging flocculation is enhanced by surfactant. The cooperative micellar formation between associating polymer and surfactant is responsible for viscosity increase in suspensions.  相似文献

Associating polymers are hydrophilic long-chain molecules containing a small amount of hydrophobic groups. The aqueous solutions show viscoelastic responses above some critical concentrations because a three-dimensional structure is formed by association of hydrophobic groups. When the associating polymers are added to silica suspensions at low concentrations, the flocculation is induced by bridging mechanisms, and the flow of suspensions become shear-thinning. For suspensions prepared with polymer solutions in which the associating network is developed, the viscosity decreases, shows a minimum, and then increases with increasing particle concentration. The viscosity decrease may arise from the breakdown of associating network due to adsorption of polymer chains onto the silica surfaces. As the particle concentration is increased, the polymer concentration in solution is decreased, and finally, all polymer chains are adsorbed on the surfaces. Beyond this point, the partial coverage of particle surfaces takes place and strong interactions are generated between particles by polymer bridging. Since the stable suspensions are converted to highly flocculated systems, the viscosity is increased and the flow becomes shear-thinning. The concentration effect of silica particles on the viscosity behavior of suspensions can be explained by a combination of viscosity decrease in solution due to polymer adsorption and viscosity increase due to flocculation.  相似文献

Flexible honeycomb gold films supported by polymer sheets are fabricated by using polystyrene particle monolayers. The surfaces of the flexible gold films are covered with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of hydrophobic or hydrophilic thiol compounds, and the wettability of the modified surface is evaluated by measurements of the contact angles of water droplets. The contact angle of the film covered with hydrophobic SAM is ca. 150 degrees, which is greater than the value of 112 degrees for a flat gold surface, while the values for hydrophilic SAM are below 10 degrees.  相似文献

Micron-sized polystyrene or PS particles were first prepared by dispersion polymerization. Then a series of polystyrene/poly(styrene-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) or PS/P(S-HEMA) composite polymer particles was prepared by seeded copolymerization using different amounts of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) at the constant core/shell ratio of 1/0.5. The produced PS seed and composite polymer particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. Adsorption behaviors of some biologically active macromolecules were studied under similar conditions. In each case the magnitude of adsorption on composite polymer particles decreased with the increase in HEMA content in the recipe, which means that the hydrophobic interaction between the surface of the particles and biomolecules decreased. The specific activities of trypsin aqueous solution and adsorbed trypsin on PS seed and composite polymer particles prepared with different HEMA contents were also measured and compared. The activity of adsorbed trypsin on composite polymer particles improved significantly with the incorporation of hydrophilic HEMA.  相似文献

The interaction forces between layers of the triblock copolymer Pluronic F108 adsorbed onto hydrophobic radio frequency glow discharge (RFGD) thin film surfaces and hydrophilic silica, in polymer-free 0.15 M NaCl solution, have been measured using the atomic force microscope (AFM) colloid probe technique. Compression of Pluronic F108 layers adsorbed on the hydrophobic RFGD surfaces results in a purely repulsive force due to the steric overlap of the layers, the form of which suggests that the PEO chains adopt a brush conformation. Subsequent fitting of these data to the polymer brush models of Alexander-de Gennes and Milner, Witten, and Cates confirms that the adsorbed Pluronic F108 adsorbs onto hydrophobic surfaces as a polymer brush with a parabolic segment density profile. In comparison, the interaction between Pluronic F108 layers adsorbed on silica exhibits a long ranged shallow attractive force and a weaker steric repulsion. The attractive component is reasonably well described by van der Waals forces, but polymer bridging cannot be ruled out. The weaker steric component of the force suggests that the polymer is less densely packed on the surface and is less extended into solution, existing as polymeric isolated mushrooms. When the surfaces are driven together at high piezo ramp velocities, an additional repulsive force is measured, attributable to hydrodynamic drainage forces between the surfaces. In comparing theoretical predictions of the hydrodynamic force to the experimentally obtained data, agreement could only be obtained if the flow profile of the aqueous solution penetrated significantly into the polymer brush. This finding is in line with the theoretical predictions of Milner and provides further evidence that the segment density profile of the adsorbed polymer brush is parabolic. A velocity dependent additional stepped repulsive force, reminiscent of a solvation oscillatory force, is also observed when the adsorbed layers are compressed under high loads. This additional force is presumably a result of hindered drainage of water due to the presence of a high volume fraction of polymer chains between the surfaces.  相似文献

Associating polymers which consist of water-soluble long-chain molecules containing a small fraction of hydrophobic groups (hydrophobes) behave as flocculants in aqueous suspensions. The effects of associating polymers on the rheological behavior are studied for single suspensions of particles with hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, and their mixtures. For particles with hydrophilic surfaces, the suspensions are highly flocculated by a bridging mechanism, because the water-soluble chains adsorb onto hydrophilic surfaces. On the other hand, the particles with hydrophobic surfaces cannot be dispersed in water without polymer and the additions of a small amount of polymer are required for preparation of homogeneous suspensions. The associating polymer acts as a dispersant at low concentrations. However, further additions of polymer lead to a drastic increase in viscosity. Since the hydrophobes on one end of molecules adsorb onto hydrophobic surfaces and other hydrophobes tending from the particles can form micelles, the particles are connected by linkage of interchain associations. By mixing two suspensions of particles with hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, the viscosity is substantially reduced and the flow becomes nearly Newtonian. The associating polymer in complex suspensions acts as a binder between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. The hetero-flocculation which leads to the formation of composite particles may be responsible for the viscosity reduction of complex suspensions.  相似文献

Amphiphilic polystyrene‐ and polymethacrylate‐based β‐acyloxy ketones were investigated as potential delivery systems for the controlled release of damascones by retro‐1,4‐addition in applications of functional perfumery. A series of random copolymers being composed of the hydrophobic damascone‐release unit and a second hydrophilic monomer were obtained by radical polymerization in organic solution by using 2,2′‐azobis[2‐methylpropanenitrile] (AIBN) as the radical source (Schemes 2 and 3). A first evaluation of the polymer conjugates in acidic or alkaline buffered aqueous solution, and in the presence of a surfactant, showed that polymethacrylates and polystyrenes having a carboxylic acid function as hydrophilic group are particularly interesting for the targeted applications (Table 2). The release of δ‐damascone ( 1 ) from polymers with poly(methacrylic acid) and poly(vinylbenzoic acid) comonomers in different stoichiometric ratios was thus followed over several days at pH 4, 7, and 9 by comparison of fluorescence probing, solvent extraction, and particle‐size measurements (Tables 3 and 4). In acidic media, the polymers were found to be stable, and almost no δ‐damascone ( 1 ) was released. In neutral or alkaline solution, where the carboxylic acid functions are deprotonated, the concentration of 1 increased over time. In the case of the polymethacrylates, the fluorescence probing experiments showed an increasing hydrophilicity of the polymer backbone with increasing fragrance release, whereas in the case of the polystyrene support, the hydrophilicity of the environment remained constant. These results suggest that the nature of the polymer backbone may have a stronger influence on the fragrance release than the ratio of hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers in the polymer chain.  相似文献

Anisotropic polystyrene nanoparticles of diameters below 0.5 microm were prepared by coating the surface of cross-linked polystyrene latex particles with a thin hydrophilic polymer layer prior to swelling the particles with styrene and then initiating second-stage free-radical polymerization. Conditions were found so that all particles had uniform asymmetry. The effect of surface chemistry on the development of particle anisotropy during seeded emulsion polymerization of sub-0.5 microm diameter particles was studied. The extent and uniformity of the anisotropy of the final particles depended strongly on the presence of the hydrophilic surface coating. Systematic variation of the degree of hydrophilicity of the surface coating provided qualitative insight into the mechanism responsible for anisotropy. Conditions were chosen so that the surface free energy favored the extrusion of a hydrophobic bulge of monomer on the hydrophilic surface of the particle during the swelling phase: the presence of a hydrophilic layer on the particle surface causes this asymmetry to be favored above uniform wetting of the particle surface by the monomer. Kinetic effects, arising from the finite time required for the seed to swell with the monomer, also play a role.  相似文献

The thickening properties and association behavior of aqueous solutions of HHM-HEC (hydrophobically-hydrophilically modified hydroxyethyl cellulose) with various hydrophobic and hydrophilic substitution degrees were investigated. The HHM-HEC was used as an oil-in-water emulsifier and stable compositional regions were investigated as a function of polymer concentration and substitution degree. The viscosity of aqueous solutions of HHM-HEC increased drastically at lower concentration for HHM-HEC with a higher hydrophobic/hydrophilic substitution ratio. The intensity ratio of the first and third vibrational bands of pyrene (I(1)/I(3)) decreased with the increase of HHM-HEC concentration and the I(1)/I(3) reached a lower plateau at a lower concentration for HHM-HEC with a higher hydrophobic/hydrophilic substitution ratio. The concentration ranges of HHM-HEC solutions which stabilize O/W emulsions differ by the hydrophobic/hydrophilic substitution ratio. However the viscosity ranges of these HHM-HEC solutions were almost the same regardless of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic substitution ratio. At the suitable concentration range for emulsification, HHM-HEC networks have two properties: (1) oil particle retention capacity and (2) laxation which can trap emulsified particles.  相似文献

The growth, morphology, and interaction/adhesion properties of supported poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PSS/PAH) and DNA/PAH multilayers were investigated by means of surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging, and AFM-related force measurements. Multilayers were assembled on a prelayer of poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) both with and without drying. SPR results showed a linear growth of the assembly in the case of PSS/PAH multilayers and nonlinear growth for DNA/PAH multilayers. Measurements of forces acting between a bare glass sphere and a multilayer-coated surface indicated repulsive or attractive forces, depending on surface charge, which suggests that, on approach, electrostatic forces dominate. On separation, we observed large pull-off forces in the case of positively charged multilayers and weak pull-off forces in the case negatively charged multilayers. Multiple adhesions and plateau regions observed on separation were interpreted in terms of a bridging of multiple polymer chains between the glass particle and the multilayer and a stretching of the polyelectrolyte loops. The dependence of the pull-off force on the number of deposited layers shows regular oscillations.  相似文献

Both of temperature(in water) and composition(in the water/methanol mixed solvent) can induce the coil-toglobule transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAM). The atomic force microscope(AFM) based single molecule force spectroscopy(SMFS) has been exploited to investigate the interactions between the polymer chain and solvent at the single-molecule level. It is found that the single-chain mechanics of PNIPAM show a remarkable dependence on the two external stimuli. A confusing experimental result is that all the force-extension(F-E) curves of unfolding an individual PNIPAM globule present a feature of elastic(monotonically increasing force) stretching but not plateau(constant force) stretching predicted by theory. In this article, we clarify that the presence of the interior solvent molecules in the single-chain globule is the origin of the discrepancy between the F-E curves obtained from theory and experiment. Although both of the external stimuli do tend to lower the solvent quality for PNIPAM, water and the water/methanol mixed solvent will never be the strongly poor solvent for PNIPAM, even at the worst condition.  相似文献

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to characterize the surface chemistry distribution on individual polystyrene latex particles. The particles were obtained by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization and contained hydrophilic quaternary ammonium chloride, sodium sulfonate, or hydroxyethyl groups. The phase shift in dynamic force mode AFM is sensitive to charge/chemical interactions between an oscillating atomic force microscope tip and a sample surface. In this work, the phase imaging technique distinguished phase domains of 50-100 nm on the surfaces of dried latex particles in ambient air. The domains are attributed to the separation of ion-rich and ion-poor components of the polymer on the particle surface.  相似文献

It was found that when an aqueous solution of vinyl monomers is polymerized on a hydrophobic substrate, obvious heterogeneity occurs in the region of the interface. This substrate effect was observed on polytetrafluroethylene (Teflon), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polyvinylchloride (PVC), but not on hydrophilic substrates. Compared with synthesis on hydrophilic surfaces, the surfaces of hydrogels synthesized on a hydrophobic substrate exhibit a larger degree of swelling, a lower surface coefficient of friction and elastic modulus, weaker interfacial adhesion, and reduced interaction with biological cells. This substrate effect has been observed for many types of aqueous monomer solutions. It was found that the above properties are related to the loosely cross-linked architecture, containing some graft-like polymer chains, that is formed on the gel surface when the gel is prepared on a hydrophobic substrate. To understand the mechanism of the substrate effect, two novel optical methods, electric speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) and real-time laser sheet refraction (RT-LSR), were developed. It was found that oxygen trapped in the composite interface between the monomer solution and rough hydrophobic substrates played an important role in the substrate effect.  相似文献

We have prepared an aqueous physical gel consisting of negatively charged silica nanoparticles bridged by ABA triblock copolymers, in which the A blocks are positively charged and the B block is neutral and water-soluble. Irreversible aggregation of the silica nanoparticles was prevented by precoating them with a neutral hydrophilic polymer. Both the elastic plateau modulus and the relaxation time increase slowly as the gel ages, indicating an increase both in the number of active bridges and in the strength with which the end blocks are adsorbed. The rate of this aging process can be increased significantly by applying a small shear stress to the sample. Our results indicate that charge-driven bridging of nanoparticles by triblock copolymers is a promising strategy for thickening of aqueous particle containing materials, such as water-based coatings.  相似文献

The ambition of this study is to analyze the role of interfacial interactions in friction and nanowear of polystyrene, by comparing friction against hydrophobic wafers (methyl‐terminated) and hydrophilic wafers (hydroxyl‐terminated) as a function of sliding velocity and normal force. Friction experiments are performed with a translation tribometer and nanowear investigation is achieved by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis of the wafer surfaces after friction. Experimental results show that the friction coefficients measured on hydrophilic surfaces are always larger than those obtained with hydrophobic surfaces, indicating a relationship between friction and interfacial interactions. Elsewhere, AFM analysis shows that polystyrene transfer appears for a higher normal force in the case of hydrophobic substrates compared to hydrophilic one. However, the corresponding tangential (or friction) force necessary to detect transfer is quite similar for both types of substrates, indicating that the initial wear of polystyrene occurs for a similar threshold interfacial shear. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This is the first report describing a new technology where hydrophobic nanoparticles adsorb onto much larger, hydrophilic mineral particle surfaces to facilitate attachment to air bubbles in flotation. The adsorption of 46 nm cationic polystyrene nanoparticles onto 43 μm diameter glass beads, a mineral model, facilitates virtually complete removal of the beads by flotation. As little as 5% coverage of the bead surfaces with nanoparticles promotes high flotation efficiencies. The maximum force required to pull a glass bead from an air bubble interface into the aqueous phase was measured by micromechanics. The pull-off force was 1.9 μN for glass beads coated with nanoparticles, compared to 0.0086 μN for clean beads. The pull-off forces were modeled using Scheludko's classical expression. We propose that the bubble/bead contact area may not be dry (completely dewetted). Instead, for hydrophobic nanoparticles sitting on a hydrophilic surface, it is possible that only the nanoparticles penetrate the air/water interface to form a three-phase contact line. We present a new model for pull-off forces for such a wet contact patch between the bead and the air bubble. Contact angle measurements of both nanoparticle coated glass and smooth films from dissolved nanoparticles were performed to support the modeling.  相似文献
