Anisotropic charge transport is observed in a two-dimensional (2D) hole system in a perpendicular magnetic field at filling factors nu=7/2, nu=11/2, and nu=13/2 at low temperature. In stark contrast, the transport at nu=9/2 is isotropic for all temperatures. Isotropic hole transport at nu=7/2 is restored for sufficiently low 2D densities or an asymmetric confining potential. The density and symmetry dependences of the observed anisotropies suggest that strong spin-orbit coupling in the hole system contributes to the unusual transport behavior.

The electronic properties of a square lattice under an applied perpendicular magnetic field in the presence of impurities or vacancies are investigated by the tight-binding method including up to second nearest neighbor interactions. These imperfections result in new gaps and bands in the Hofstadter butterfly even when the second order interactions break the bipartite symmetry. In addition, the whole spectrum of the Hall conduction is obtained by the Kubo formula for the corresponding cases. The results are in accordance with the Thouless-Kohmoto-Nightingale-den Nijs integers when the Fermi energy lies in an energy gap. We find that the states due to the vacancies or impurities with small hopping constants are highly localized and do not contribute to the Hall conduction. However, the impurities with high hopping constants result in new Hall plateaus with constant conduction of σ(xy)?=±?e(2)/h, since high hopping constants increase the probability of an electron contributing to the conduction.

The Hall conductance of a two-dimensional electronic system with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the presence of an external periodic potential of a superlattice and a perpendicular magnetic field has been calculated. The calculations were performed for an electron gas with parameters typical both of a system with weak spin-orbit coupling (AlGaAs/GaAs) and a system with relatively strong Rashba coupling (InGaAs/InAs).

We show that the spin-Hall conductivity in insulators is related to a magnetic susceptibility representing the strength of the spin-orbit coupling. We use this relationship as a guiding principle to search real materials showing quantum spin-Hall effect. As a result, we theoretically predict that two-dimensional bismuth will show the quantum spin-Hall effect, both by calculating the helical edge states, and by showing the nontriviality of the Z2 topological number, and propose possible experiments.

We study the effect of disorder on the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in two-dimensional ferromagnets. The topological nature of the AHE leads to the integer quantum Hall effect from a metal, i.e., the quantization of sigma(xy) induced by the localization except for the few extended states carrying Chern numbers. Extensive numerical study on a model reveals that Pruisken's two-parameter scaling theory holds even when the system has no gap with the overlapping multibands and without the uniform magnetic field. Therefore, the condition for the quantized AHE is given only by the Hall conductivity sigma(xy) without the quantum correction, i.e., /sigma(xy)/>e(2)/(2h).

We study the effect of disorder on the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity in a magnetic two-dimensional electron gas with a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction. We find that anomalous Hall conductivity vanishes unless the lifetime is spin-dependent, similar to the spin Hall conductivity in the nonmagnetic system. In addition, we find that the spin Hall conductivity does not vanish in the presence of magnetic scatterers.

Using the perturbation method,we theoretically study the spin current and its heat effect in a multichannel quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The heat generated by the spin current is calculated. With the increase of the width of the quantum wire, the spin current and the heat generated both exhibit period oscillations with equal amplitudes. When the quantum-channel number is doubled, the oscillation periods of the spin current and of the heat generated both decrease by a factor of 2.For the spin current j s,xy,the amplitude increases with the decrease of the quantum channel;while the amplitude of the spin current j s,yx remains the same. Therefore we conclude that the effect of the quantum-channel number on the spin current j s,xy is greater than that on the spin current j s,yx.The strength of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling is tunable by the gate voltage, and the gate voltage can be varied experimentally, which implies a new method of detecting the spin current. In addition,we can control the amplitude and the oscillation period of the spin current by controlling the number of the quantum channels. All these characteristics of the spin current will be very important for detecting and controlling the spin current, and especially for designing new spintronic devices in the future.

We study linear response to a longitudinal electric field on an antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit couplings (SOCs). It is found that the spin-valley Hall effect could emerge alone or coexist with the spin Hall effect. The spin and spin-valley Hall conductivities exhibit some peculiarities that depend on the distinct topological states of the graphene lattice. Furthermore, the spin and spin-valley Hall conductivities could be remarkably modulated by changing the Fermi level. Our findings suggest that the antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with SOCs is an excellent platform for potential applications of spintronics and valleytronics.

The Berry phase due to the spin wave function gives rise to the orbital ferromagnetism and anomalous Hall effect in the noncoplanar antiferromagnetic ordered state on face-centered-cubic (fcc) lattice once the crystal is distorted perpendicular to the (1,1,1) or (1,1,0) plane. The relevance to the real systems gamma-FeMn and NiS2 is also discussed.

The Hall conductivity of an electron gas on an interface showing topological defects as disclinations in the presence of an orthogonal constant magnetic field is investigated. This kind of defect induces either positive or negative singular curvature in the medium. It is shown that the positive curvature decreases the quantum Hall plateau widths and shifts the steps in the Hall conductivity to lower magnetic fields. In contrast, the negative one leaves to the existence of two types of plateaus, one with higher widths and the other one with lower widths in comparison to the flat case. In this case, the shift in the steps of the Hall conductivity goes to higher magnetic fields. We also investigate the Hall conductivity for electrons around a cylindrically symmetric distribution of disclinations and it turns out that it is the same as that corresponding to a single effective disclination.

In a quantum Hall effect, flat Landau levels may be broadened by disorder. However, it has been found that in the thermodynamic limit, all extended (or current carrying) states shrink to one single energy value within each Landau level. On the other hand, a quantum anomalous Hall effect consists of dispersive bands with finite widths. We numerically investigate the picture of current carrying states in this case. With size scaling, the spectrum width of these states in each bulk band still shrinks to a single energy value in the thermodynamic limit, in a power law way. The magnitude of the scaling exponent at the intermediate disorder is close to that in the quantum Hall effects. The number of current carrying states obeys similar scaling rules, so that the density of states of current carrying states is finite. Other states in the bulk band are localized and may contribute to the formation of a topological Anderson insulator.

The energy spectrum of light-hole and heavy-hole excitons and optical absorption in a quantum well have been analyzed taking into account Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Interband and intraband exciton transitions have been considered. It has been shown that, in the presence of spin-orbit coupling, the probabilities of the interband and intraband photoelectric effects diverge in the vicinity of the threshold if the electron-hole interaction is neglected. The threshold probabilities of the interband and intraband photoelectric effects become finite when Coulomb interaction is taken into account.

We have investigated theoretically the field-driven electron transport through a single-quantum-well semiconductor heterostructure with spin-orbit coupling. The splitting of the asymmetric Fano-type resonance peaks due to the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling is found to be highly sensitive to the direction of the incident electron. The splitting of the Fano-type resonance induces the spin-polarization dependent electron current. The location and the line shape of the Fano-type resonance can be controlled by adjusting the energy and the direction of the incident electron, the oscillation frequency, and the amplitude of the external field. These interesting features may be used to devise tunable spin filters and realize pure spin transmission currents.

Quantum Hall effect (QHE), as a class of quantum phenomena that occur in macroscopic scale, is one of the most important topics in condensed matter physics. It has long been expected that QHE may occur without Landau levels so that neither external magnetic field nor high sample mobility is required for its study and application, Such a QHE free of Landau levels, can appear in topological insulators (TIs) with ferromagnetism as the quantized version of the anomalous Hall effect, i.e., quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. Here we review our recent work on experimental realization of the QAH effect in magnetically doped TIs. With molecular beam epitaxy, we prepare thin films of Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3 TIs with well- controlled chemical potential and long-range ferromagnetic order that can survive the insulating phase. In such thin films, we eventually observed the quantization of the Hall resistance at h/e2 at zero field, accompanied by a considerable drop in the longitudinal resistance. Under a strong magnetic field, the longitudinal resistance vanishes, whereas the Hall resistance remains at the quantized value. The realization of the QAH effect provides a foundation for many other novel quantum phenomena predicted in TIs, and opens a route to practical applications of quantum Hall physics in low-power-consumption electronics.

We investigate the topological insulating states of the p-band systems in optical lattices induced by the on site orbital angular momentum polarization, which exhibit gapless edge modes in the absence of Landau levels. This effect arises from the energy-level splitting between the on site p_{x}+ip_{y} and p_{x}-ip_{y} orbitals by rotating each optical lattice site around its own center. At large rotation angular velocities, this model naturally reduces to two copies of Haldane's quantum Hall model. The distribution of the Berry curvature in momentum space and the quantized Chern numbers are calculated. The experimental realization of this state is feasible.
