We establish an analytic interpretation for the index of certain transversally elliptic symbols on non-compact manifolds. By using this interpretation, we establish a geometric quantization formula for a Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group acting on a non-compact symplectic manifold with proper moment map. In particular, we present a solution to a conjecture of Michèle Vergne in her ICM 2006 plenary lecture.  相似文献

This is the first part of a series on non-compact groups acting isometrically on compact Lorentz manifolds. This subject was recently investigated by many authors. In the present part we investigate the dynamics of affine, and especially Lorentz transformations. In particular we show how this is related to geodesic foliations. The existence of geodesic foliations was (very succinctly) mentioned for the first time by D'Ambra and Gromov, who suggested that this may help in the classification of compact Lorentz manifolds with non-compact isometry groups. In the Part II of the series, a partial classification of compact Lorentz manifolds with non-compact isometry group will be achieved with the aid of geometrical tools along with the dynamical ones presented here. Gromov and Piatetski-Shapiro proved existence of finite volume non-arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds of any given dimension. In dimension four and higher, we show that there are about v v such manifolds of volume at most v, considered up to commensurability. Since the number of arithmetic ones tends to be polynomial, almost all hyperbolic manifolds are non-arithmetic in an appropriate sense. Moreover, by restricting attention to non-compact manifolds, our result implies the same growth type for the number of quasi-isometry classes of lattices in SO(n, 1). Our method involves a geometric graph-of-spaces construction that relies on arithmetic properties of certain quadratic forms.  相似文献

In this paper, we study twisted holomorphic chains and related gauge equations over non-compact Kähler manifolds. We use the heat flow method to solve the Dirichlet boundary problem for the related gauge equations, and prove a Hitchin-Kobayashi type correspondence for twisted holomorphic chain over some non-compact Kähler manifolds.  相似文献

The spectrum (of the Dirichlet Laplacian) of non-compact, non-complete Riemannian manifolds is much less understood than their compact counterparts. In particular it is often not even known whether such a manifold has any discrete spectra. In this article, we will prove that a certain type of non-compact, non-complete manifold called the quantum tube has non-empty discrete spectrum. The quantum tube is a tubular neighborhood built about an immersed complete manifold in Euclidean space. The terminology of “quantum” implies that the geometry of the underlying complete manifold can induce discrete spectra – hence quantization. We will show how the Weyl tube invariants appear in determining the existence of discrete spectra. This is an extension and generalization, on the geometric side, of the previous work of the author on the “quantum layer.”  相似文献

In this paper we consider non-compact non-flat simply connected harmonic manifolds. In particular, we show that the Martin boundary and Busemann boundary coincide for such manifolds. For any finite volume quotient we show that (up to scaling) there is a unique Patterson–Sullivan measure and this measure coincides with the harmonic measure. As an application of these results we prove that the geodesic flow on a non-flat finite volume harmonic manifold without conjugate points is topologically transitive.  相似文献

The paper studies Dirichlet forms on the classical Wiener space and the Wiener space over non-compact complete Riemannian manifolds. The diffusion operator is almost everywhere an unbounded operator on the Cameron–Martin space. In particular, it is shown that under a class of changes of the reference measure, quasi-regularity of the form is preserved. We also show that under these changes of the reference measure, derivative and divergence are closable with certain closable inverses. We first treat the case of the classical Wiener space and then we transfer the results to the Wiener space over a Riemannian manifold.  相似文献

We describe a relationship between globalizations of local holomorphic actions on Stein manifolds induced by global actions of certain non-compact Lie groups, and holomorphic fiber bundles with smooth Stein base and fiber and connected structure group. To this end we prove a univalence result for particular Stein Riemann domains with a free and properly discontinuous action of a discrete group of biholomorphisms. In this paper we give some results on the topology of manifolds with ∞-Bakry–Émery Ricci tensor bounded below, and in particular of steady and expanding gradient Ricci solitons. To this aim we clarify and further develop the theory of f-harmonic maps from non-compact manifolds into non-positively curved manifolds. Notably, we prove existence and vanishing results which generalize to the weighted setting part of Schoen and Yau?s theory of harmonic maps.  相似文献

Chernoff approximations of Feller semigroups and the associated diffusion processes in Riemannian manifolds are studied. The manifolds are assumed to be of bounded geometry, thus including all compact manifolds and also a wide range of non-compact manifolds. Sufficient conditions are established for a class of second order elliptic operators to generate a Feller semigroup on a (generally non-compact) manifold of bounded geometry. A construction of Chernoff approximations is presented for these Feller semigroups in terms of shift operators. This provides approximations of solutions to initial value problems for parabolic equations with variable coefficients on the manifold. It also yields weak convergence of a sequence of random walks on the manifolds to the diffusion processes associated with the elliptic generator. For parallelizable manifolds this result is applied in particular to the representation of Brownian motion on the manifolds as limits of the corresponding random walks.  相似文献

In this paper we study the geodesic flow for a particular class of Riemannian non-compact manifolds with variable pinched negative sectional curvature. For a sequence of invariant measures we are able to prove results relating the loss of mass and bounds on the measure entropies. We compute the entropy contribution of the cusps. We develop and study the corresponding thermodynamic formalism. We obtain certain regularity results for the pressure of a class of potentials. We prove that the pressure is real analytic until it undergoes a phase transition, after which it becomes constant. Our techniques are based on the one hand on symbolic methods and Markov partitions, and on the other on geometric techniques and approximation properties at the level of groups.  相似文献

We construct left-invariant quaternionic contact (qc) structures on Lie groups with zero and non-zero torsion and with non-vanishing quaternionic contact conformal curvature tensor, thus showing the existence of non-flat quaternionic contact manifolds. We prove that the product of the real line with a seven-dimensional manifold, equipped with a certain qc structure, has a quaternionic Kähler metric as well as a metric with holonomy contained in Spin(7). As a consequence, we determine explicit quaternionic Kähler metrics and Spin(7)-holonomy metrics, which seem to be new. Moreover, we give explicit non-compact eight dimensional almost quaternion hermitian manifolds that are not quaternionic Kähler with either a closed fundamental four form or fundamental two forms defining a differential ideal.  相似文献

We investigate spectral properties of the Laplace operator on a class of non-compact Riemannian manifolds. For a given number N we construct periodic manifolds such that the essential spectrum of the corresponding Laplacian has at least N open gaps. We use two different methods. First, we construct a periodic manifold starting from an infinite number of copies of a compact manifold, connected by small cylinders. In the second construction we begin with a periodic manifold which will be conformally deformed. In both constructions, a decoupling of the different period cells is responsible for the gaps.  相似文献

We show a geometric rigidity of isometric actions of non-compact (semisimple) Lie groups on Lorentz manifolds. Namely, we show that the manifold has a warped product structure of a Lorentz manifold with constant curvature by a Riemannian manifold.
