This paper presents a systematic study of two series of carbosilane liquid crystalline (LC) dendrimers from first to fifth generations bearing 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 terminal chiral mesogenic groups, respectively. All the LC dendrimers synthesized are characterized by the same glass transition temperature around -5°C. It has been shown that the LC dendrimers of the lower generations (G-1-G-3) form a ferroelectric SmC* phase over a very broad temperature range up to about 180°C, while the LC dendrimers of the higher generations (G-4 and G-5) display a rectangular columnar mesophase (Colr). Schemes of packing in the SmC* and Colr mesophases formed by the LC dendrimers are suggested and discussed. Electrical measurements on the ferroelectric LC dendrimers have shown that an increase in generation number leads to a decrease in the value of the spontaneous polarization and an increase in switching time.  相似文献

A new series of carbosilane liquid crystalline (LC) dendrimers from the first to the third generations with 8, 16 and 32 chiral terminal mesogenic groups, respectively, has been synthesized. The molecular structures and purity of all new compounds were confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and GPC analysis. Data of polarization microscopy and SAX analysis demonstrated that all LC dendrimers synthesized form a chiral smectic SmC* phase at temperatures below 50 °C. It has been found that bistable electrooptical switching is observed for all dendrimers. The influence of chiral mesogenic fragment length on phase behavior and ferroelectric properties of carbosilane LC dendrimers is discussed.  相似文献

Using a photoelastic modulator-based novel set-up, the electric field-induced in-plane birefringence and the optical rotatory power (ORP) were measured of an antiferroelectric liquid crystalline compound (12OF1M7) in its various phases using 30 µm homeotropic cells. Some specific signatures of the in-plane birefringence and of the ORP for the various phases are being established. A relatively small threshold field is needed for the unwinding process of the antiferroelectric phase with a unit cell of four layers [SmCA*(1/2)] compared with that for two layers [SmCA*(0)]. On application of the electric field on the high temperature side of the SmCA*(1/2) phase (80.1-81.5°C), a field-induced phase transition is shown to occur directly to the SmC* phase, whereas on the lower temperature side (79.4-80.1°C) the transition takes place to SmC* via the SmCA*(1/3) phase. The in-plane birefringence exhibits a critical power law dependence for the SmC*-SmA transition. The ORP changes sign within the temperature range of the phase with a unit cell of three layers, reflecting a change in the handedness during this phase. Using tilted conoscopy, the results for the biaxiality and the apparent tilt angle for a smectic liquid crystal with a tilt angle greater than 18° in the ferroelectric phase are reported. The biaxiality implies the difference in the refractive indices between the two minor axes of the refractive index ellipsoid. The optical transmittance at visible and IR wavelengths for free-standing films reveal characteristic reflection bands for these phases. The modulated structures of the reflected bands appear just above the SmCA* phase and below SmCA*(1/3); these are possibly due to an easy deformation of the phase by the surfaces.  相似文献

Dielectric spectroscopy of a ferroelectric liquid crystal with planar texture in the frequency range 100 Hz to 1 MHz has been carried out as a function of temperature from 25°C to 60°C at different DC fields varying from 0 to 12 kVcm-1. From the measured dielectric strengths and relaxation frequencies, it is observed that the material has a Sc*-SA* transition at 56·1°C and a SA*-I transition at 58°C. The data of the Sc* phase have been assigned to the Goldstone mode. The rotational viscosity and elastic constant have been calculated from the observed data. The capacitance shows an abrupt drop at the critical DC field where unwinding of the helix occurs. The measured value of the critical field decreases with temperature and agrees to literature data from electrooptical experiments. On applying a DC field greater than 6·5 kV cm-1 at room temperature, the liquid crystal shows the unwound Sc* and SA* phases.  相似文献

A homologous series of chiral thioesters, hexyl (2S)-2-[6-(4-alkanoyloxyphenyl)benzoyloxy-2'-naphthyl]thiopropionates, HnPBNTP (n=7-11) was synthesized, and the mesophases and electro-optical properties were studied. All the materials possess a ferroelectric SmC* phase, which was confirmed by the switching current behaviour. It was found that compounds with a shorter alkyl chain length (n=7-9) displayed SmA* and SmC* phases, while, compounds with a longer alkyl chain length (n=10 and 11), displayed the SmC* phase exclusively. Spontaneous polarization and apparent tilt angle were also measured. The maximum Ps values are in the range 15-26 nC cm-2, and the maximum θ values are in the range 23°-28°.  相似文献

Two diastereomeric carboxylic acids, 2(S)-[2(R)-methylhexyloxy]propionic acid and 2(S)[2(S)-methylhexyloxy]propionic acid, were prepared from ethyl (S)-lactate and (R)-1-iodo2-methylhexane or (S)-1-iodo-2-methylhexane in the presence of Ag2O. From these acids two liquid crystals, 2 and 3 , whose configurations are (S , R ) and (S, S) were synthesized and their liquid crystal properties investigated. Although both LCs have the same phase sequence Cr-SmC*-N*-I as well as a wide SmC* phase range, the influence of the relative stereochemistry on their physical properties is clear. The liquid crystal with (S, S)-configuration possesses better properties: lower SmC* phase transition temperature, wider SmC* phase range and higher Ps value. The Ps value difference between the ferroelectric LCs 2 and 3 (97 and 131nCcm-2, respectively, at Tc - T = 10°C) is unexpectedly large. The consideration, alone, of a zigzag conformation at the chiral molecular part of 2 and 3 is insufficient to explain such a difference.  相似文献

A new low molar mass chiral organosiloxane mesogen and its racemic analogue have been synthesized and their mesomorphic and ferroelectric properties investigated. The chiral derivative, denoted A*B, exhibits one tilted enantiotropic ferroelectric smectic C mesophase over a broad temperature range, with very high tilt angles and moderate spontaneous polarization (36° and 19 nC cm-2 at 20°C). The achiral siloxane derivative, denoted A*B, exhibits one broad enantiotropic smectic C phase. Preliminary electro-optic measurements indicate that the spontaneous polarization is weakly dependent on temperature between 10°C and 50°C, the latter being the S*c to isotropic phase transition. The tilt angle and layer spacing are temperature independent, and current response times of less than 200 μs were measured at 25°C for fields of 10 V μ-1. These results are discussed in comparison with those for side chain polymer liquid crystal structures and other low molar mass ferroelectric materials.  相似文献

We report preliminary results of optical and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments on the smectic A*-smectic C* transition in two ferroelectric liquid crystalline polysiloxanes. Although the optical tilt angle in the SmC* phases reaches values up to 30°, temperature-dependent SAXS measurements clearly reveal that the smectic layer spacing is basically conserved during the A*-C* transition as well as in the subsequent C* phase. Connected with the A*-C* transition we further observed a significant increase in birefringence, hence reflecting an increase of orientational order. The practical absence of layer shrinkage and the enhanced orientational ordering are consistent with the de Vries diffuse cone model of smectic A-smectic C transitions.  相似文献

In this work, complex permittivity measurements on a diluted solution of the ferroelectric liquid crystal, 4-[(S,S)-2,3-epoxyhexyloxy]-phenyl 4-(decyloxy)-benzoate, which shows ferroelectric smectic C phase (S*C), have been performed. Using time domain reflectometry, at frequencies between 10 MHz and 10 GHz, in the temperature range from 50°C down to 10°C for every 10°C, at 5, 10 and 30 wt.% in benzene we observe two independent relaxation processes around 150 MHz and 2 GHz. It is shown that the high frequency process is due to the internal molecular reorientations while the low frequency one is due to molecular orientation around the long molecular axis. It is concluded that the reorientation around the long axis is hindered and leads to a resultant macroscopic polarization.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of five hydrogen-bonded ferroelectric liquid crystal complexes (HBFLCs) prepared from mesogenic p-n-alkoxy benzoic acids and non-mesogenic propionic/butyric acids with different chiral centres are reported. Complementary intermolecular hydrogen bonding is confirmed through IR study. HBFLCs are found to exhibit chiral nematic (N*), smectic C* (SmC*) and smectic G* (monotropic) phases in their cooling profiles during polarizing thermal microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Phase coexistence regions are observed above the IN* transition. The chiral nematic to smectic C* transition is found to be of first order. The temperature variation of spontaneous polarization exhibited by these HBFLC complexes in their SmC* phase is presented. The effect of non-covalent interaction imparted by the soft hydrogen bonding in these LC complexes on enhanced or induced thermal stability of tilted LC phases is discussed.  相似文献

Complex dielectric spectroscopy (frequency range 5 Hz-13 MHz) has been used to analyse the frequency, temperature and bias-field dependences of the molecular dynamics of a very high-spontaneous-polarization ferroelectric liquid crystalline material exhibiting SmA, SmC* and unknown SmX smectic phases. Different smectic phase transition temperatures have been observed from the study of the temperature dependence of the dielectric strength and the relaxation frequency. The phase transition temperatures (crystalline to isotropic phases) have also been described very accurately from the temperature-dependent symmetric and asymmetric shape parameters of the relaxation function and also the dc conductivity. In a planar aligned cell, two symmetric modes (Goldstone mode and domain mode) have been observed in both the SmX and SmC* phases. One asymmetric mode (X-mode) observed in the SmC* and SmA phases could be related to the interaction of dipoles of the ferroelectric liquid crystals being affected by the surface of the cell. The soft mode, which usually appears very close to the SmC*-SmA phase transition was not observed until the bias field was applied. The second order nature of the SmC*-SmA phase transition was revealed.  相似文献

Among unsymmetric oligomesogens, chiral dimers formed by connecting a cholesteryl ester fragment with various aromatic mesogenic cores through a polymethylene spacer have been attracting much attention due to their remarkable thermal behaviour. In particular, dimers containing a diphenylacetylene segment having an alkoxy chain have shown interesting mesomorphic behaviour. In view of this a new series of unsymmetric dimers consisting of a diphenylacetylene moiety having an alkyl chain and a cholesteryl ester unit joined through a paraffinic spacer have been synthesized and their liquid crystalline properties characterized. The lengths of the central methylene spacer (C3, C4, C5 and C7) as well as that of the alkyl chain (n-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl) have been varied to establish structure-property relationships. These investigations have revealed that all the dimers exhibit smectic A, twist grain boundary and chiral neamtic (N*) phases with the exception of one of the dimers for which only the N* phase was observed. Some differences in the mesomorphic properties of the unsymmetric dimers containing odd or even parity methylene spacers have been observed. The majority of dimers having an even (C4) parity paraffinic spacer show a blue phase while the dimers with odd (C3, C5 and C7) parity spacers exhibit the chiral smectic (SmC*) phase. In some cases, the SmC* phase exists well below (-60°C) and above room temperature.  相似文献

The effect of applied a.c. electric fields on the optical activity of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal which forms ferroelectric, antiferroelectric and subphases was investigated. Applied fields greater than ∼10 kV m-1 induced an additional phase in the region between the SmC* and SmC*A phases. Also, applied fields stabilize the SmC*F2 phase at the expense of the SmC* phase.  相似文献

Temperature-dependent polarized infrared spectra were measured over the temperature range 105-30°C for a ferroelectric liquid crystal with a naphthalene ring (FLC-1) in the isotropic, smectic A (SmA), and chiral smectic C (SmC*) phases to investigate its molecular conformation, interactions, and alignment in each phase. It has been found, from the temperaturedependent spectral changes in the 1610-1600 cm-1 region, that the degree of twist between the naphthalene and benzene rings of FLC-1 changes with temperature. The peak intensity of the band at 1606 cm-1 containing contributions from both the benzene and naphthalene ring stretching modes begins to decrease, not suddenly but gradually, upon going from the SmA phase to the SmC* phase, suggesting that the molecular orientation of the two rings changes gradually between the two phases. The frequencies of two CH2 stretching bands suggest that the disorder of the alkyl chain of FLC-1 is similar for the liquid crystal phase and the isotropic liquid phase. The splitting of the core C=O stretching band indicates that the resonance system consisting of the benzene ring and the C=O group in the core part of FLC-1 is involved in two kinds of intermolecular interaction between adjacent molecules in the liquid crystal phase.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Physical properties of the partially fluorinated compound 3F5FPhF, with hockey stick-like molecules, were studied by complementary methods. Apart from the already reported paraelectric SmA*, ferroelectric SmC* and antiferroelectric SmC*A phases, the presence of the smectic C*α subphase in the phase sequence was proved by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy, electro-optic and dielectric spectroscopy methods. The temperature dependence of the smectic layer thickness and correlation length of the lateral short-range order was determined by X-ray diffraction. Based on dielectric measurements three relaxation processes were revealed in the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase (two collective: PL, PH and one molecular: s-process), two collective ones (Goldstone and soft modes) were found both in the ferroelectric SmC* phase and SmC*α subphase while one relaxation process (soft mode) in the paraelectric SmA* phase. The results were compared with that obtained for other structurally similar compounds, and it was shown that even addition of one methylene group to the side chain influences much on the physical properties.  相似文献

Using a light scattering technique at a fixed temperature, we have investigated viscoelastic behaviour exhibited by the ferroelectric smectic phase (SmC*) of C8tolane in a homeotropic orientation. Experiments were performed in backward and forward scattering geometries that allowed us to deduce separately orientational diffusivities k3/η and k+/η corresponding to the Goldstone mode. The k3/η value measured in the SmC* phase is about 100 times higher than in the SmCA* phase exhibited by the same liquid crystal compound. The factor 100 may be attributed in great part to the molecular arrangement mode in adjacent smectic layers. However k+/η measured in the SmC* phase is in the same order of magnitude as those measured previously in SmCA* phases.  相似文献

Frequency- and temperature-dependent dielectric and switching parameters of a room temperature tri-component antiferroelectric liquid crystal mixture W-287 have been determined. Dielectric, optical texture and thermodynamic studies show wide room temperature range antiferroelectric SmC*a (?91.1°C to <–25°C) phase in addition to high temperature paraelectric SmA* (?2.6°C) and ferroelectric SmC* (?4.4°C) phases. The dielectric studies carried out in the frequency range of 1–35 MHz under planar anchoring condition of the molecules show five different relaxation modes appearing in the SmA*, SmC* and SmC*a phases. Using Curie–Weiss law fit, ferroelectric SmC* to paraelectric SmA* transition temperature has been found to be 91.8°C. The dielectric response of SmC*a phase exhibits unusually three relaxation modes due to collective as well as individual molecular processes in addition to phason mode in the SmC* phase and amplitudon mode in the SmA* phase. Spontaneous polarisation, switching time and rotational viscosity have also been determined. The maximum value of PS is ?300 nC/cm2, whereas viscosity is moderate. Switching time is of the order of few milli seconds.  相似文献

Dielectric and DSC methods were used to study a new fluorinated liquid crystalline compound exhibiting ferroelectric and paraelectric phases as well as an intermediate alpha sub-phase. Two dielectric relaxation processes were revealed in the SmC* phase: a typical Goldstone mode over the whole temperature range and a soft mode in the pre-transition region on both sides of the SmC*–SmA* transition. From the temperature dependencies of the dielectric increments and critical frequencies for the dielectric relaxation processes observed in all the liquid crystalline phases, as well as from texture observations, it was shown that there is a SmC*α sub-phase between the ferroelectric SmC* and paraelectric SmA* phases.  相似文献

Three homologous series of chiral materials derived from (S)-2-(6-hydroxy-2-naphthly)propionic acid with a methyleneoxy linking group were synthesized for the investigation of mesomorphic properties. All the materials displayed enantiotropic SmA* and SmC* phases. The spontaneous polarization (P s) and optical tilt angles in the SmC* phase of the chiral materials were measured. The maximum spontaneous polarizations are in the range 12.3-19.1 nC cm-2. No significant difference could be found in the P s values with respect to the various alkyl chiral chain lengths, n. The maximum optical tilt angles are in the range 25-30°. The optical tilt angles decrease with the increase in alkyl chain length, n.  相似文献
