Diuron and amitrole adsorption from aqueous solution on an activated carbon fiber and an activated carbon cloth were studied as a function of temperature. Diuron adsorption was greater than that of amitrole and increased with rising temperature, whereas amitrole adsorption decreased when the temperature increased. Endothermicity of diuron adsorption was due to an increase in the planarity and diffusion of diuron molecules with higher temperatures. However, the exothermicity found for amitrole was due to the increase in amitrole solubility and in vibrational energy of adsorbed molecules with higher temperature. External mass transfer resistance was also found to play an important role in diuron adsorption on activated carbon cloth. 相似文献

A study has been made on the effect of pH upon the equilibrium adsorption capacity of triethyl phosphate, dimethyl phosphate
and orthophosphate on to activated carbon cloth. It is shown that for molecular phosphates no dependence upon pH exists, whilst
the adsorption of ionic phosphates exhibit a strong pH dependence. These adsorption trends may be explained in terms of pKa
values, ionic strength and the surface charge of the activated carbon cloth is aqueous solution. 相似文献

Summary A method for the quantitative estimation of the global non-ideality of the adsorption of weak organic electrolytes on activated carbon from dilute aqueous solutions is presented. The method is based on the analysis of a Graham plot which reflects the adsorption isotherm deviations from ideality. Averaging these deviations over the whole range of adsorption, one gets a single value representing the global non-ideality of a system. The method also allows to estimate the contributions of heterogeneity and interactions in the adsorbed phase to the global non-ideality effect. The theoretical considerations are illustrated by some model calculations. The usefulness of the method is tested for experimental data of benzoic and salicyclic acid adsorption over a wide range of pH and concentrations.

The results presented in this work are related to the design of a guideline to develop specific properties at the surface of an activated carbon (AC). For this, two model aromatic compounds have been synthesized and their electrolytic behavior in aqueous solutions was studied by a potentiometric method. The textural characteristics of the activated carbon were determined by porosimetry methods. The nature of oxygen-carrying functions and the acid-base behavior of the AC surface were characterized by TPD and potentiometric titration methods, respectively. The adsorption and desorption equilibria of the aromatic compounds on activated carbon were measured in aqueous solutions, and the hysteresis between adsorption and desorption, which reveals irreversible adsorption, was discussed on the basis of the frontier orbital theory. HOMO and LUMO orbitals of the adsorbent and adsorbates were calculated, and irreversible adsorption was attributed to the small energy difference between HOMO and LUMO of the aromatic adsorbates and the adsorbent. Adsorption equilibria of K2CrO4 in aqueous solution on the AC alone and on the AC-aromatic ligand adsorbents, respectively, prove the efficient development of specific chemical functions at the carbon surface provided by the adsorbed aromatic compounds. 相似文献

A series of breakthrough curves for the adsorption of Deorlene Yellow and Telon Blue on carbon have been used to test a kinetic model. The model is based on the unreacted core theory and assumes resistances due to external mass transfer and pore diffusion, and irreversible adsorption. The experimental and theoretical data are well correlated by the model at low dye flow rates, but the model was modified at high dye flow rates. The effective diffusivities are 4.0 × 10 −10 m 2 s −1 and 3.0 × 10 −10 m 2 s −1 for Deorlene Yellow and Telon Blue respectively. 相似文献

The adsorption of cerium on activated charcoal has been studied as a function of shaking time, pH, concentration of adsorbate and temperature. The adsorption of cerium obeys Freyndlich and Langmuir isotherms. The influence of different cations and anions on cerium adsorption has been exmined. The adsorption of other metal ions on activated charcoal has been studied under specified conditions to check its selectivity for cerium adsorption. Consequently, cerium was removed from a mixture containing Ce, Ba, Sr, Ru, Cs, Cr, Nd, Pr and In. About 99% of the adsorbed cerium on activated charcoal can be recovered with 3M HNO 3 solution. A wavelelngth dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer was used for measuring the cerium concentration. 相似文献

The adsorption isotherms of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions in the concentration range 40–1000 mg l −1 on two samples of granulated and two samples of activated carbon fibres containing varying amounts of associated oxygen have been reported. The adsorption isotherms are type I of BET classification showing initially a rapid adsorption tending to be asymptotic at higher concentrations. The amounts of oxygen associated with the carbon surface has been enhanced by oxidation with nitric acid and ammonium persulphate in the solution phase and with oxygen gas at 350°C and decreased by degassing of the oxidized carbon samples at 400, 650 and 950°C. The adsorption of Cu(II) ions increases on oxidation and decreases on degassing. The increase in adsorption on oxidation depends on the nature of the oxidative treatment while the decrease in adsorption on degassing depends on the temperature of degassing. This has been attributed to the increase in the carbon–oxygen acidic surface groups on oxidation and their decrease on degassing. Suitable mechanisms consistent with the results have been proposed. 相似文献

The adsorption of MCPA and 2,4-D on the activated carbon Filtrasorb 300 was studied. The adsorption isotherms of herbicides
from aqueous solutions were measured over a wide range of solute concentrations and at different temperatures. The experimental
equilibrium data were analyzed by the Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm taking into account the energetic heterogeneity of adsorption
system. The effect of temperature and herbicide properties on its uptake was discussed. The thermal analysis was applied in
order to find the differences in herbicide interactions with carbon surface. The kinetic dependences were measured and the
relations between solute properties and adsorption rate were discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis study reports on the adsorption of 2-chlorophenol from an aqueous solution using activated carbon prepared by H 2SO 4 activation of the pericarp of Ricinus communis (RCAC). The pericarp was carbonized and activated by treating with H 2SO 4 solution followed by heating in an oven at 105°C for 12 hrs. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of pH, contact time, initial concentration of the adsorbate, adsorbent dosage and temperature of the solution. Kinetic data were best fit to a pseudo-first-order rate equation for the adsorption of 2-chlorophenol on RCAC. Thermodynamic parameters Δ Ho, Δ So and Δ Go for the adsorption were also determined which shows that adsorption on the surface of RCAC was spontaneous in nature, and exothermic between temperatures of 20°C and 80°C. The equilibrium data better fit the Langmuir isotherm model for 2-chlorophenol adsorption on RCAC. IR spectrum for loaded and unloaded RCAC was obtained and found to be in good agreement. 相似文献

The adsorption of erbium (Er) ions on activated charcoal (AC) is investigated at temperatures 10–40 °C from aqueous solutions to understand the kinetics behavior. The intra-particle diffusion, the pseudo-first order kinetic and pseudo-second order kinetic models were used to describe the kinetic data. Results shows that the adsorption of Er ions on AC occurs in two stages and the surface adsorption and diffusion phenomena are operative in the adsorption process. The result also reveals that intra-particle diffusion is not only the main rate determining step through out the adsorption process, but the boundary layer diffusion also play significant role in rate determination. Values of the intra-particle diffusion rate constant and the extent of the boundary layer diffusion were calculated. A comparison of the kinetics models on the overall adsorption rate indicates that the Er/AC system is best described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model than the pseudo-first order model, and the overall rate of the Er ions adsorption on AC appears to be controlled by more than one step, i.e., external mass transfer and diffusion mechanism. 相似文献

2-Mercaptothiazoline (2-MT) is widely used as an organic corrosive as well as a diffusion inhibitor due to its high ability to form metal-chelate Schiff base complexes. This study investigated the elimination of 2-MT from aqueous systems with adsorption process to reach the goal of sustainable use of water resources. The Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms were adopted to examine the adsorption behavior of two types of 2-MT (i.e., 2-MT molecule and 2-MT complex) on activated carbon (AC) Chemviron Filtrasorb 400 (F 400) in three different solutions. The results of adsorption isotherm data showed that the adsorption ability of 2-MT molecule is much higher than that of 2-MT complex, whose ability may be reduced due to the electrostatic repulsion. The good applicability of Langmuir adsorption isotherm to experimental data indicated that the adsorption of 2-MT complexes on F 400 might be limited to a monolayer. Higher ionic strength and lower pH value of the solutions promoted the uptake of 2-MT onto F 400 from the solutions. In addition, not only 2-MT molecule and complex but also Cu(II) can be adsorbed on the surface of F 400, which was demonstrated by energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX). Effects of the two major interactions, chemical and physical interactions, on the adsorption of 2-MT on F 400 were compared as well in this study. 相似文献

The sorption of 2.4-dichloro phenoxyacetic acid (2.4-D) on two different activated carbons was determined using the batch equilibration technique. The calculated slopes of the Freundlich sorption isotherms were significantly less than 1. The (K) values were higher for the activated carbon which has the higher specific surface, and increased with NaCl concentration. The rate of attaining equilibrium of 2.4-D increased with a decrease in absorbent concentration. Dynamic modelling of the adsorption showed that a first order reversible kinetic model was followed for the adsorption process. The overall rate constant K′, the adsorption rate K 1, the desorption rate constant K 2, and the equilibrium constant K c for the adsorption process were calculated. 相似文献

A new equation, a modified Langmuir-like equation (M-LLE), for describing adsorption from solution by activated carbons is proposed for the first time in this work. The M-LLE assumes that there are two types of interactions: (a) specific interactions which are typical, enthalpy-driven interactions and (b) nonspecific interactions driven by the loss of water structuring, upon adsorption (hydrophobic bonding), around the nonpolar parts of the drug. The proposed model was evaluated by studying the adsorption of three drugs: procaine, fluoxetine, and phenobarbital by four different activated carbons under different experimental conditions. As the hydrophobicity of the drug increased, the capacity constant representing the interactions driven by hydrophobic bonding (K(HB), M-LLE equation) increased. Experimental conditions that decrease hydrophobic bonding, such as increased temperature and higher cosolvent concentration, resulted in a decrease in K(HB). Salts that tend to increase water structuring and hydrophobic bonding caused an increase in K(HB). All of these studies support the M-LLE, because they support the notion of hydrophobic-bonding-driven interactions. 相似文献

We propose a novel kinetic model for adsorption of aqueous benzene onto both granular activated carbon (GAC) and powdered activated carbon (PAC). The model is based on mass conservation of benzene coupled with three-stage adsorption: (1) the first portion for an instantaneous stage or external surface adsorption, (2) the second portion for a gradual stage with rate-limiting intraparticle diffusion, and (3) the third portion for a constant stage in which the aqueous phase no longer interacts with activated carbon. An analytical solution of the kinetic model was validated with the kinetic data obtained from aqueous benzene adsorption onto GAC and PAC in batch experiments with two different solution concentrations (C(0)=300 mg L(-1), 600 mg L(-1)). Experimental results revealed that benzene adsorption for the two concentrations followed three distinct stages for PAC but two stages for GAC. The analytical solution could successfully describe the kinetic adsorption of aqueous benzene in the batch reaction system, showing a fast instantaneous adsorption followed by a slow rate-limiting adsorption and a final long constant adsorption. Use of the two-stage model gave incorrect values of adsorption coefficients in the analytical solution due to inability to describe the third stage. 相似文献

The feasibility of activated carbon (AC) bioregeneration after adsorption of biologically resistant surface-active substances (SAS) by a community of strains of SAS-degrading bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas are analyzed. It was shown that the degree of AC equilibrium saturated with nonionic SAS under static conditions was 23–35%. The contribution of bacterial destruction of SAS to the restored capacity was 20–23% and, for all practical purposes, did not depend on the AC porosity. The efficiency of regeneration of the microporous AC after adsorption by it of the nonionic and anionic SAS under dynamic conditions was 22 and 95% of the respective capacities of fresh samples. The extent of regeneration of the mesoporous AC after dynamic sorption of nonionic SAS was 85%. Results indicate that regeneration is based on desorptive and migrational movements of the adsorbate toward the biocenosis of SAS-degrading bacteria located on the external surface of the AC grain. The adsorptive properties of the AC–SAS system and the sorbents’ porous structure determine the probability of desorption of molecules and the rate of their diffusion into the peripheral zone of the grain. The AC regeneration efficiency depends on the nature of the adsorbate distribution in its porous structure. 相似文献

The impact of ozonation on textural and chemical surface characteristics of two granular activated carbons (GAC), namely F400 and AQ40, and their ability to adsorb phenol (P), p-nitrophenol (PNP), and p-chlorophenol (PCP) from aqueous solutions have been studied. The porous structure of the ozone-treated carbons remained practically unchanged with regard to the virgin GAC. However, important modifications of the chemical surface and hydrophobicity were observed from FTIR spectroscopy, pH titrations, and determination of pH(PZC). As a rule, the ozone treatment at either room temperature (i.e., about 25 degrees C) or 100 degrees C gave rise to acidic surface oxygen groups (SOG). At 25 degrees C primarily carboxylic acids were formed while a more homogeneous distribution of carboxylic, lactonic, hydroxyl, and carbonyl groups was obtained at 100 degrees C. The experimental isotherms for phenolic compounds on both GAC were analyzed using the Langmuir model. Dispersive interactions between pi electrons of the ring of the aromatics and those of the carbon basal planes were thought to be the primary forces responsible for the physical adsorption whereas oxidative coupling of phenolic compounds catalyzed by basic SOG was a major cause of irreversible adsorption. The exposure of both GAC to ozone at room temperature decreased their ability to adsorb P, PNP, and PCP. However, when ozone was applied at 100 degrees C adsorption was not prevented but in some cases (P and PNP on F400) the adsorption process was even enhanced. 相似文献

Competitive adsorption is the usual situation in real applications, and it is of critical importance in determining the overall performance of an adsorbent. In this study, the competitive adsorption characteristics of all the combinations of binary mixtures of aqueous metal ion species Ca2+(aq), Cd2+(aq), Pb2+(aq), and Hg2+(aq) on a functionalized activated carbon were investigated. The porous structure of the functionalized active carbon was characterized using N2 (77 K) and CO2 (273 K) adsorption. The surface group characteristics were examined by temperature-programmed desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, acid/base titrations, and measurement of the point of zero charge (pHpzc). The adsorption of aqueous metal ion species, M2+(aq), on acidic oxygen functional group sites mainly involves an ion exchange mechanism. The ratios of protons displaced to the amount of M2+(aq) metal species adsorbed have a linear relationship for both single-ion and binary mixtures of these species. Hydrolysis of metal species in solution may affect the adsorption, and this is the case for adsorption of Hg2+(aq) and Pb2+(aq). Competitive adsorption decreases the amounts of individual metal ions adsorbed, but the maximum amounts adsorbed still follow the order Hg2+(aq) > Pb2+(aq) > Cd2+(aq) > Ca2+(aq) obtained for single metal ion adsorption. The adsorption isotherms for single metal ion species were used to develop a model for competitive adsorption in binary mixtures, involving exchange of ions in solution with surface proton sites and adsorbed metal ions, with the species having different accessibilities to the porous structure. The model was validated against the experimental data. 相似文献

The low-cost activated carbon was prepared from a renewable aquatic plant residue,Trapa natans husk, and tested for its ability to remove norfloxacin (NOR) from aqueous solutions. Physical and chemical properties of the Trapa natans husk activated carbon (TAC) were characterized. TAC has a large surface area of 1274 m2/g and mesoporous structure. Carboxylic and hydroxyl groups contributed to the sorption of NOR onto TAC but they were not the most important factors in the sorption process. The rates of adsorp... 相似文献

The surface heterogeneity of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is studied on the basis of adsorption isotherms from dilute aqueous phenol and dopamine solutions at various pH values. The generalized Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm equation was applied to investigate the cooperative effect of the surface heterogeneity and the lateral interactions between the adsorbates. The theoretical isosteric heats of adsorption were obtained assuming that the heat of adsorption profile reveals both the energetic heterogeneity of the adsorption system and the strength of the interactions between the neighboring molecules. The adsorption energy distribution functions were calculated by using algorithm based on a regularization method. The great advantage of this method is that the regularization makes no assumption about the shape of the obtained energy distribution functions. Analysis of the isosteric heats of adsorption for MWCNTs showed that the influence of the surface heterogeneity is much stronger than the role of the lateral interactions. The most typical adsorption heat is 20–22 kJ/mol for both phenol and dopamine. After purification of nanotubes, heat value for phenol dropped to 16–17 kJ/mol. The range of the energy distribution is only slightly influenced by the surface chemistry of the nanotubes in the aqueous conditions. 相似文献
