This article deals with the envelope solitary waves and periodic waves in the AB equations that serve as model equations describing marginally unstable baroclinic wave packets in geophysical fluids and also ultra‐short pulses in nonlinear optics. An envelope solitary wave has a width proportional to its velocity and inversely proportional to its amplitude. The velocity of the envelope solitary wave is partially dependent on its amplitude in the sense that the amplitude determines the upper or lower limit of the velocity. When two envelope solitary waves collide, they survive the collision and retain their identities except for a shift in the positions of both the envelopes and the carrier waves. The periodic wave solutions in sine wave form may be stable or unstable depending upon the wave parameters. When the sine wave is destabilized by small perturbations, its long‐time evolution shows a Fermi–Pasta–Ulam‐type oscillation.  相似文献

The system of two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations has wide applications in physics. In the past, the main attention has been their solitary waves. Here we turn our attention to their periodic wave solutions. In this paper, the stability of the periodic solutions is studied analytically and the criteria for the stability are obtained. The long time evolution of the solutions to the coupled system is studied numerically for the unstable case emphasizing wave–wave interactions in nonlinear optics. Different kinds of evolution are observed depending on the coefficients of the system and the parameters of the unperturbed waves and perturbation. For certain ranges of parameters, the evolution appears to be periodic, while for some other ranges of parameters, solitary wave or solitary wave pairs can be excited among the irregular background although often the evolution is completely chaotic.  相似文献

In this paper, the effects of quadratic singular curves in integrable wave equations are studied by using the bifurcation theory of dynamical system. Some new singular solitary waves (pseudo‐cuspons) and periodic waves are found more weak than regular singular traveling waves such as peaked soliton (peakon), cusp soliton (cuspon), cusp periodic wave, etc. We show that while the first‐order derivatives of the new singular solitary wave and periodic waves exist, their second‐order derivatives are discontinuous at finite number of points for the solitary waves or at infinitely countable points for the periodic wave. Moreover, an intrinsic connection is constructed between the singular traveling waves and quadratic singular curves in the phase plane of traveling wave system. The new singular periodic waves, pseudo‐cuspons, and compactons emerge if corresponding periodic orbits or homoclinic orbits are tangent to a hyperbola, ellipse, and parabola. In particular, pseudo‐cuspon is proposed for the first time. Finally, we study the qualitative behavior of the new singular solitary wave and periodic wave solutions through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation.  相似文献

We study the dynamics of large amplitude internal solitary waves in shallow water by using a strongly nonlinear long-wave model. We investigate higher order nonlinear effects on the evolution of solitary waves by comparing our numerical solutions of the model with weakly nonlinear solutions. We carry out the local stability analysis of solitary wave solution of the model and identify an instability mechanism of the Kelvin–Helmholtz type. With parameters in the stable range, we simulate the interaction of two solitary waves: both head-on and overtaking collisions. We also study the deformation of a solitary wave propagating over non-uniform topography and describe the process of disintegration in detail. Our numerical solutions unveil new dynamical behaviors of large amplitude internal solitary waves, to which any weakly nonlinear model is inapplicable.  相似文献

We consider linear instability of solitary waves of several classes of dispersive long wave models. They include generalizations of KDV, BBM, regularized Boussinesq equations, with general dispersive operators and nonlinear terms. We obtain criteria for the existence of exponentially growing solutions to the linearized problem. The novelty is that we dealt with models with nonlocal dispersive terms, for which the spectra problem is out of reach by the Evans function technique. For the proof, we reduce the linearized problem to study a family of nonlocal operators, which are closely related to properties of solitary waves. A continuation argument with a moving kernel formula is used to find the instability criteria. These techniques have also been extended to study instability of periodic waves and of the full water wave problem.  相似文献

The large‐amplitude internal waves commonly observed in the coastal ocean often take the form of unsteady undular bores. Hence, here, we examine the long‐time combined effect of variable topography and background rotation on the propagation of internal undular bores, using the framework of a variable‐coefficient Ostrovsky equation. Because the leading waves in an internal undular bore are close to solitary waves, we first examine the evolution of a single solitary wave. Then, we consider an internal undular bore, for which two methods of generation are used. One method is the matured undular bore developed from an initial shock box in the Korteweg–de Vries equation, that is the Ostrovsky equation with the rotational term omitted, and the other method is a modulated cnoidal wave solution of the same Korteweg–de Vries equation. It transpires that in the long‐time model simulations, the rotational effect disintegrates the nonlinear waves into inertia‐gravity waves, and then there emerge complicated interactions between these inertia‐gravity waves and the modulated periodic waves of the undular bore, especially at the rear part of the undular bore. However, near the front of the undular bore, nonlinear effects further modulate these waves, with the eventual emergence of nonlinear envelope wave packets.  相似文献

Convective Linear Stability of Solitary Waves for Boussinesq Equations   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Boussinesq was the first to explain the existence of Scott Russell's solitary wave mathematically. He employed a variety of asymptotically equivalent equations to describe water waves in the small-amplitude, long-wave regime. We study the linearized stability of solitary waves for three linearly well-posed Boussinesq models. These are problems for which well-developed Lyapunov methods of stability analysis appear to fail. However, we are able to analyze the eigenvalue problem for small-amplitude solitary waves, by comparison to the equation that Boussinesq himself used to describe the solitary wave, which is now called the Korteweg–de Vries equation. With respect to a weighted norm designed to diminish as perturbations convect away from the wave profile, we prove that nonzero eigenvalues are absent in a half-plane of the form R λ>− b for some b >0, for all three Boussinesq models. This result is used to prove the decay of solutions of the evolution equations linearized about the solitary wave, in two of the models. This "convective linear stability" property has played a central role in the proof of nonlinear asymptotic stability of solitary-wave-like solutions in other systems.  相似文献

We investigate possible linear waves and nonlinear wave interactions in a bounded three‐layer fluid system using both analysis and numerical simulations. For sharp interfaces, we obtain analytic solutions for the admissible linear mode‐one parent/signature waves that exist in the system. For diffuse interfaces, we compute the overtaking interaction of nonlinear mode‐two solitary waves. Mathematically, owing to a small loss of energy to dispersive tails during the interaction, the waves are not solitons. However, this energy loss is extremely minute, and because the dispersively coupled waves in the system exhibit the three types of Lax KdV interactions, we conclude that for all intents and purposes the solitary waves exhibit soliton behavior.  相似文献

We examine the variable‐coefficient Kortweg‐de Vries equation for the situation when the coefficient of the quadratic nonlinear term changes sign at a certain critical point. This case has been widely studied for a solitary wave, which is extinguished at the critical point and replaced by a train of solitary waves of the opposite polarity to the incident wave, riding on a pedestal of the original polarity. Here, we examine the same case but for a modulated periodic wave train. Using an asymptotic analysis, we show that in contrast a periodic wave is preserved with a finite amplitude as it passes through the critical point, but a phase change is generated causing the wave to reverse its polarity.  相似文献

In this paper, we establish the orbital stability of a class of spatially periodic wave train solutions to multidimensional nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations with periodic potential. We show that the orbit generated by the one‐dimensional wave train is stable under the flow of the multidimensional equation under perturbations which are, on one hand, coperiodic with respect to the translation or Galilean variable of propagation, and, on the other hand, periodic (but not necessarily coperiodic) with respect to the transverse directions. That is, we show their transverse orbital stability. The class of periodic wave trains under consideration is the family of subluminal rotational waves, which are periodic in the momentum but unbounded in their position.  相似文献

The Zakharov–Kuznetsov equation is considered, which is an equation describing two dimensional weakly nonlinear ion-acoustic waves in plasma. We focus on using the lattice Boltzmann method to study the Zakharov–Kuznetsov equation. A lattice Boltzmann model is constructed. In numerical experiments, the propagation of the single solitary wave and the collision of double solitary waves are simulated. The results with different parameters are investigated and compared.  相似文献

Propagation of nonlinear shear horizontal (SH) waves in a homogeneous, isotropic and incompressible elastic plate of uniform thickness is considered. The constituent material of the plate is assumed to be generalized neo-Hookean. By employing a perturbation method and balancing the weak nonlinearity and dispersion in the analysis, it is shown that the nonlinear modulation of waves is governed asymptotically by a nonlinear Schr?dinger (NLS) equation. Then the effect of nonlinearity on the propagation characteristics of asymptotic waves is discussed on the basis of this equation. It is found that, irrespective of the plate thickness, the wave number and the mode number, when the plate material is softening in shear then the nonlinear plane periodic waves are unstable under infinitesimal perturbations and therefore the bright (envelope) solitary SH waves will exist and propagate in such a plate. But if the plate material is hardening in shear in this case nonlinear plane periodic waves are stable and only the dark solitary SH waves may exist.  相似文献

The Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP) equation possesses a four‐parameter family of one‐dimensional periodic traveling waves. We study the spectral stability of the waves with small amplitude with respect to two‐dimensional perturbations which are either periodic in the direction of propagation, with the same period as the one‐dimensional traveling wave, or nonperiodic (localized or bounded). We focus on the so‐called KP‐I equation (positive dispersion case), for which we show that these periodic waves are unstable with respect to both types of perturbations. Finally, we briefly discuss the KP‐II equation, for which we show that these periodic waves are spectrally stable with respect to perturbations that are periodic in the direction of propagation, and have long wavelengths in the transverse direction.  相似文献

In this paper, based on a multidimensional Riemann theta function, a lucid and straightforward generalization of the Hirota-Riemann method is presented to explicitly construct multiperiodic Riemann theta functions periodic wave solutions for nonlinear equations such as the Caudrey-Dodd-Gibbon-Sawada-Kotera equation and (2+1)-dimensional breaking soliton equation. Among these periodic waves, the one-periodic waves are well-known cnoidal waves, their surface pattern is one-dimensional, and often they are used as one-dimensional models of periodic waves. The two-periodic waves are a direct generalization of one-periodic waves, their surface pattern is two-dimensional so that they have two independent spatial periods in two independent horizontal directions. A limiting procedure is presented to analyze in detail, asymptotic behavior of the multiperiodic waves and the relations between the periodic wave solutions and soliton solutions are rigorously established. This generalized Hirota-Riemann method can also be demonstrated on a class variety of nonlinear difference equations such as Toeplitz lattice equation.  相似文献

Traveling wave solutions have played a vital role in demonstrating the wave character of nonlinear problems emerging in the field of mathematical sciences and engineering. To depict the nature of propagation of the nonlinear waves in nature, a range of nonlinear evolution equations has been proposed and investigated in the existing literature. In this article, solitary and traveling periodic wave solutions for the (2 + 1)-dimensional modified KdV-KP equation are derived by employing an ansatz method, named the enhanced (G′/G)-expansion method. For this continued equation, abundant solitary wave solutions and nonlinear periodic wave solutions, along with some free parameters, are obtained. We have derived the exact expressions for the solitary waves that arise in the continuum-modified KdV-KP model. We study the significance of parameters numerically that arise in the obtained solutions. These parameters play an important role in the physical structure and propagation directions of the wave that characterizes the wave pattern. We discuss the relation between velocity and parameters and illustrate them graphically. Our numerical analysis suggests that the taller solitons are narrower than shorter waves and can travel faster. In addition, graphical representations of some obtained solutions along with their contour plot and wave train profiles are presented. The speed, as well as the profile of these solitary waves, is highly sensitive to the free parameters. Our results establish that the continuum-modified KdV-KP system supports solitary waves having different shapes and speeds for different values of the parameters.  相似文献

In an inhomogeneous collisional dusty magnetoplasma, a new coupled (3 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear system is derived for the low-frequency electrostatic waves considering the collision between ions and neutrals. It is demonstrated that due to the collision, the scaling symmetry of the system is destroyed. By means of the classical Lie group approach, two types of exact similarity waves are obtained which show three important features. First, various waves can be constructed from these solutions, such as solitary waves, shock waves and periodic waves. Second, these waves may have shears that are time-dependent, linear and nonlinear. Third, the electrostatic potential and the parallel electron velocity possess more freedoms in the sense that they can have either same or different wave forms.  相似文献

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation possesses three distinct six-parameter families of complex-valued quasiperiodic traveling waves, one in the defocusing case and two in the focusing case. All these solutions have the property that their modulus is a periodic function of xct for some cR. In this paper we investigate the stability of the small amplitude traveling waves, both in the defocusing and the focusing case. Our first result shows that these waves are orbitally stable within the class of solutions which have the same period and the same Floquet exponent as the original wave. Next, we consider general bounded perturbations and focus on spectral stability. We show that the small amplitude traveling waves are stable in the defocusing case, but unstable in the focusing case. The instability is of side-band type, and therefore cannot be detected in the periodic set-up used for the analysis of orbital stability.  相似文献

We present a method to prove nonlinear instability of solitary waves in dispersive models. Two examples are analyzed: we prove the nonlinear long time instability of the KdV solitary wave (with respect to periodic transverse perturbations) under a KP-I flow and the transverse nonlinear instability of solitary waves for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation.  相似文献
