We define a class of bipartite graphs that correspond naturally with Ferrers diagrams. We give expressions for the number of spanning trees, the number of Hamiltonian paths when applicable, the chromatic polynomial and the chromatic symmetric function. We show that the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial is given by the excedance set statistic.  相似文献

Recently V. Krushkal and D. Renardy generalized the Tutte polynomial from graphs to cell complexes. We show that evaluating this polynomial at the origin gives the number of cellular spanning trees in the sense of A. Duval, C. Klivans, and J. Martin. Moreover, after a slight modification, the Tutte–Krushkal–Renardy polynomial evaluated at the origin gives a weighted count of cellular spanning trees, and therefore its free term can be calculated by the cellular matrix-tree theorem of Duval et al. In the case of cell decompositions of a sphere, this modified polynomial satisfies the same duality identity as the original polynomial. We find that evaluating the Tutte–Krushkal–Renardy along a certain line gives the Bott polynomial. Finally we prove skein relations for the Tutte–Krushkal–Renardy polynomial.  相似文献

Spanning trees are fundamental structures in graph theory. Furthermore, computing them is a central part in many relevant algorithms, used in either practical or theoretical applications. The classical Minimum Spanning Tree problem is solvable in polynomial time but almost all of its variants are NP-Hard. In this paper, a novel polynomial size mixed integer linear programming formulation is introduced for spanning trees. This formulation is based on a new characterization we propose for acyclic graphs. Preliminary computational results show that this formulation is capable of solving small instances of the diameter constrained minimum spanning tree problem. It should be possible to strengthen the formulation to tackle larger instances of that problem. Additionally, our spanning tree formulation may prove to be a more effective model for some related applications.  相似文献

The graphs whose spanning unicyclic subgraphs partition into exactly two isomorphism classes are characterized. This work is a continuation of [6] where graphs with one isomorphism class of spanning unicyclic graphs are characterized. The analogous question for spanning trees was posed in [10] and graphs with one isomorphism class of spanning trees were characterized in [2], [3], [4], [7], [11] while graphs with two isomorphism classes of spanning trees were characterized in [4], [5]. Related topics are treated in [1], [8], [9].  相似文献

We give a new characterization of the Tutte polynomial of graphs. Our characterization is formally close (but inequivalent) to the original definition given by Tutte as the generating function of spanning trees counted according to activities. Tutte’s notion of activity requires a choice of a linear order on the edge set (though the generating function of the activities is, in fact, independent of this order). We define a new notion of activity, the embedding-activity, which requires a choice of a combinatorial embedding of the graph, that is, a cyclic order of the edges around each vertex. We prove that the Tutte polynomial equals the generating function of spanning trees counted according to embedding-activities. This generating function is, in fact, independent of the embedding. A generalization of the Prüfer coding of trees is given providing a natural correspondence between the set of codes of spanning trees of a graph and the set of codes of spanning trees of theextension of the graph. This correspondence prompts us to introduce and to investigate a notion ofthe spanning tree volume of a graph and provides a simple relation between the volumes of a graph and its extension (and in particular a simple relation between the spanning tree numbers of a graph and its uniform extension). These results can be used to obtain simple purely combinatorial proofs of many previous results obtained by the Matrix-tree theorem on the number of spanning trees of a graph. The results also make it possible to construct graphs with the maximal number of spanning trees in some classes of graphs.  相似文献

As the extension of the previous work by Ciucu and the present authors [M. Ciucu, W.G. Yan, F.J. Zhang, The number of spanning trees of plane graphs with reflective symmetry, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 112 (2005) 105-116], this paper considers the problem of enumeration of spanning trees of weighted graphs with an involution which allows fixed points. We show that if G is a weighted graph with an involution, then the sum of weights of spanning trees of G can be expressed in terms of the product of the sums of weights of spanning trees of two weighted graphs with a smaller size determined by the involution of G. As applications, we enumerate spanning trees of the almost-complete bipartite graph, the almost-complete graph, the Möbius ladder, and the almost-join of two copies of a graph.  相似文献

In finite graphs, greedy algorithms are used to find minimum spanning trees (MinST) and maximum spanning trees (MaxST). In infinite graphs, we illustrate a general class of problems where a greedy approach discovers a MaxST while a MinST may be unreachable. Our algorithm is a natural extension of Prim's to infinite graphs with summable and strictly positive edge weights, producing a sequence of finite trees that converge to a MaxST.  相似文献

Deo and Micikevicius recently gave a new bijection for spanning trees of complete bipartite graphs. In this paper we devise a generalization of Deo and Micikevicius's method, which is also a modification of Olah's method for encoding the spanning trees of any complete multipartite graph K(n1,…,nr). We also give a bijection between the spanning trees of a planar graph and those of any of its planar duals. Finally we discuss the possibility of bijections for spanning trees of DeBriujn graphs, cubes, and regular graphs such as the Petersen graph that have integer eigenvalues.  相似文献

The present paper is the first in a series of four dealing with a mapping, introduced by the present authors, from orientations to spanning trees in graphs, from regions to simplices in real hyperplane arrangements, from reorientations to bases in oriented matroids (in order of increasing generality). This mapping is actually defined for ordered oriented matroids. We call it the active orientation-to-basis mapping, in reference to an extensive use of activities, a notion depending on a linear ordering, first introduced by W.T. Tutte for spanning trees in graphs. The active mapping, which preserves activities, can be considered as a bijective generalization of a polynomial identity relating two expressions–one in terms of activities of reorientations, and the other in terms of activities of bases–of the Tutte polynomial of a graph, a hyperplane arrangement or an oriented matroid. Specializations include bijective versions of well-known enumerative results related to the counting of acyclic orientations in graphs or of regions in hyperplane arrangements. Other interesting features of the active mapping are links established between linear programming and the Tutte polynomial. We consider here the bounded case of the active mapping, where bounded corresponds to bipolar orientations in the case of graphs, and refers to bounded regions in the case of real hyperplane arrangements, or of oriented matroids. In terms of activities, this is the uniactive internal case. We introduce fully optimal bases, simply defined in terms of signs, strengthening optimal bases of linear programming. An optimal basis is associated with one flat with a maximality property, whereas a fully optimal basis is equivalent to a complete flag of flats, each with a maximality property. The main results of the paper are that a bounded region has a unique fully optimal basis, and that, up to negating all signs, fully optimal bases provide a bijection between bounded regions and uniactive internal bases. In the bounded case, up to negating all signs, the active mapping is a bijection.  相似文献

A non-crossing geometric graph is a graph embedded on a set of points in the plane with non-crossing straight line segments. In this paper we present a general framework for enumerating non-crossing geometric graphs on a given point set. Applying our idea to specific enumeration problems, we obtain faster algorithms for enumerating plane straight-line graphs, non-crossing spanning connected graphs, non-crossing spanning trees, and non-crossing minimally rigid graphs. Our idea also produces efficient enumeration algorithms for other graph classes, for which no algorithm has been reported so far, such as non-crossing matchings, non-crossing red-and-blue matchings, non-crossing k-vertex or k-edge connected graphs, or non-crossing directed spanning trees. The proposed idea is relatively simple and potentially applies to various other problems of non-crossing geometric graphs.  相似文献

In this paper we study the existence of properly colored spanning trees in edge-colored graphs, under certain assumptions on the graph, both structural and related to the coloring. The general problem of proper spanning trees in edge-colored graphs is not only combinatorially difficult but also computationally hard. Here, we focus on some questions of this important combinatorial problem on sufficient degrees involving connectivity and colored degrees.  相似文献

We say that two graphs are similar if their adjacency matrices are similar matrices. We show that the square grid G n of order n is similar to the disjoint union of two copies of the quartered Aztec diamond QAD n−1 of order n−1 with the path P n (2) on n vertices having edge weights equal to 2. Our proof is based on an explicit change of basis in the vector space on which the adjacency matrix acts. The arguments verifying that this change of basis works are combinatorial. It follows in particular that the characteristic polynomials of the above graphs satisfy the equality P(G n )=P(P n (2))[P(QAD n−1)]2. On the one hand, this provides a combinatorial explanation for the “squarishness” of the characteristic polynomial of the square grid—i.e., that it is a perfect square, up to a factor of relatively small degree. On the other hand, as formulas for the characteristic polynomials of the path and the square grid are well known, our equality determines the characteristic polynomial of the quartered Aztec diamond. In turn, the latter allows computing the number of spanning trees of quartered Aztec diamonds. We present and analyze three more families of graphs that share the above described “linear squarishness” property of square grids: odd Aztec diamonds, mixed Aztec diamonds, and Aztec pillowcases—graphs obtained from two copies of an Aztec diamond by identifying the corresponding vertices on their convex hulls. We apply the above results to enumerate all the symmetry classes of spanning trees of the even Aztec diamonds, and all the symmetry classes not involving rotations of the spanning trees of odd and mixed Aztec diamonds. We also enumerate all but the base case of the symmetry classes of perfect matchings of odd square grids with the central vertex removed. In addition, we obtain a product formula for the number of spanning trees of Aztec pillowcases. Research supported in part by NSF grant DMS-0500616.  相似文献

Given a graph \(G=(V,E,L)\) and a coloring function \(\ell : E \rightarrow L\), that assigns a color to each edge of G from a finite color set L, the rainbow spanning forest problem (RSFP) consists of finding a rainbow spanning forest of G such that the number of components is minimum. A spanning forest is rainbow if all its components (trees) are rainbow. A component whose edges have all different colors is called rainbow component. The RSFP on general graphs is known to be NP-complete. In this paper we use the 3-SAT Problem to prove that the RSFP is NP-complete on trees and we prove that the problem is solvable in polynomial time on paths, cycles and if the optimal solution value is equal to 1. Moreover, we provide an approximation algorithm for the RSFP on trees and we show that it approximates the optimal solution within 2.  相似文献

We study relations between the Alexander–Conway polynomial L and Milnor higher linking numbers of links from the point of view of finite-type (Vassiliev) invariants. We give a formula for the first non-vanishing coefficient of L of an m-component link L all of whose Milnor numbers μi1ip vanish for pn. We express this coefficient as a polynomial in Milnor numbers of L. Depending on whether the parity of n is odd or even, the terms in this polynomial correspond either to spanning trees in certain graphs or to decompositions of certain 3-graphs into pairs of spanning trees. Our results complement determinantal formulas of Traldi and Levine obtained by geometric methods.  相似文献

The definition of a shortest spanning tree of a graph is generalized to that of an efficient spanning tree for graphs with vector weights, where the notion of optimality is of the Pareto type. An algorighm for obtaining all efficient spanning trees is presented.  相似文献

Let be a family of graphs. Suppose there is a nontrivial graph H such that for any supergraph G of H, G is in if and only if the contraction G/H is in . Examples of such an : graphs with a spanning closed trail; graphs with at least k edge-disjoint spanning trees; and k-edge-connected graphs (k fixed). We give a reduction method using contractions to find when a given graph is in and to study its structure if it is not in . This reduction method generalizes known special cases.  相似文献

Given an undirected graph, a star partition is a partition of the nodes into subsets with at least two nodes so that the subgraph induced by each subset has a spanning star. Star partitions are related to well-known problems concerning domination in graphs and edge covering. We focus on the Constrained Star Partition Problem (CSP) that asks for finding a star partition of given cardinality. The problem is new and presents interesting peculiarities. We explore the relation between the cardinalities of star partitions and domatic bipartitions, showing that there are star partitions of any cardinality between minimum and maximum values, and that a similar but weaker result holds for domatic bipartitions. We study the computational complexity of different versions of star partition and domatic bipartition problems, proving that most of them, in particular CSP, constrained domatic bipartition and balanced domatic bipartition, are NP-complete. We also show that star partition problems are polynomial on trees and, more generally, on bounded treewidth graphs. We introduce an integer linear programming formulation that defines a polytope containing all the star partitions of a graph, showing that its vertices have only integral components for trees, which implies that linear programming can be used to solve weighted star partition problems on trees.  相似文献
