Cardinal Functions on Initial Chain Algebras on Pseudotrees

Initial chain algebras on pseudotrees generalize the notion of an interval algebra on a linear order. Many relationships which hold between the various cardinal functions on interval algebras also hold for initial chain algebras. In particular, for initial chain algebras on pseudotrees, depth equals tightness, spread equals hereditary Lindelöf degree, irredundance equals the cardinality of the algebra, and incomparability equals hereditary cofinality. For interval algebras, Rubin showed that any subalgebra of regular uncountable cardinality contains either a chain of size or a pairwise incomparable family of size . This result holds for initial chain algebras as well.

Categories of algebraic sets

The category of algebraic sets is defined in a straightforward way for any algebraic theory . It is a concrete, complete and cocomplete category dually equivalent to a full reflective subcategory of the category of -algebras. For the algebraic theory of commutative algebras over a field K, we get the algebraic sets over K.     

Positive Solutions for a Singular Nonlinear Problem on a Bounded Domain in R 2

For a bounded regular Jordan domain in R ², we introduce and study a new class of functions K() related on its Green function G. We exploit the properties of this class to prove the existence and the uniqueness of a positive solution for the singular nonlinear elliptic equation u+(x,u)=0, in D(), with u=0 on and uC(), where is a nonnegative Borel measurable function in ×(0,) that belongs to a convex cone which contains, in particular, all functions (x,t)=q(x)t ^–,>0 with nonnegative functions qK(). Some estimates on the solution are also given.     

Division Algebras that Ramify only on a Plane Quartic Curve with Simply Connected Components

A central division algebra over the field of rational functions in two variables with coefficients over an algebraically closed field ramifies along a divisor on P ². If the ramification divisor of is a quartic curve which is the union of simply connected curves, we show that is a symbol algebra and satisfies the index equals exponent equation.     

A Homological Bridge Between Finite and Infinite-Dimensional Representations of Algebras

Given a finite-dimensional algebra , we show that a frequently satisfied finiteness condition for the category -mod) of all finitely generated (left) -modules of finite projective dimension,namely contravariant finiteness of (-mod) in -mod, forces arbitrary modules of finite projective dimension to be direct limits of objects in (-mod). Among numerous applications, this yields an encompassing sufficient condition for the validity of the first finitistic dimensionconjecture, that is, for the little finitistic dimension of to coincide with the big (this is well known to fail overfinite-dimensional algebras in general).

Bijectivity of -endomorphisms of ℬ(H) and the unilateral shift

LetH be a separable infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. We prove that if : (H)(H) is a^*-preserving ring homomorphism whose range contains a rank-one operator and an operator with dense range, then is an isometric linear or conjugate-linear algebra automorphism of (H). Łukasiewicz Tribes are Absolutely Sequentially Closed Bold Algebras

We show that each sequentially continuous (with respect to the pointwise convergence) normed measure on a bold algebra of fuzzy sets (Archimedean MV-algebra) can be uniquely extended to a sequentially continuous measure on the generated ukasiewicz tribe and, in a natural way, the extension is maximal. We prove that for normed measures on ukasiewicz tribes monotone (sequential) continuity implies sequential continuity, hence the assumption of sequential continuity is not restrictive. This yields a characterization of the ukasiewicz tribes as bold algebras absolutely sequentially closed with respect to the extension of probabilities. The result generalizes the relationship between fields of sets and the generated -fields discovered by J. Novák. We introduce the category of bold algebras and sequentially continuous homomorphisms and prove that ukasiewicz tribes form an epireflective subcategory. The restriction to fields of sets yields the epireflective subcategory of -fields of sets.     

On the Varieties of Parabolic Subgroups, their Generalizations and Combinatorial Applications

Investigations of homogeneous varieties T=(G:P) of all cosets of finite Coxeter or Chevalley groups G by their maximal parabolic subgroups P had been conducted at the Kalunin seminar at Kiev State University since the 1970s, as were investigations of their corresponding permutation groups, geometries and association schemes.In I. A. Faradev et al. (eds), Investigations in Algebraic Theory of Combinatorial Objects (Kluwer Acad. Publ., 1994), one can find some results on the investigation of noncomplete Galois correspondence between fusion schemes of the orbital scheme for (G,T) and overgroups of (G,T), as well as calculations of the intersectional indices of the Hecke algebra of (G,T). We will discuss additional results on this topic and consider questions related to the following problems: embeddings of varieties (G:P) into the Lie algebra corresponding to Chevalley group G; interpretations of Lie geometries, small Schubert cells, connections between the geometry of G and its associated Weyl geometry in terms of linear algebra, and applications of these problems to calculations performed in Lie geometries and association schemes; constructions of geometric objects arising from Kac–Moody Lie algebras and superalgebras, and applications of these constructions to investigations of graphs of large girth and large size.

Sensitivity analysis of the greatest eigenvalue of a symmetric matrix via the ɛ-subdifferential of the associated convex quadratic form

LetA(·) be ann × n symmetric affine matrix-valued function of a parameteruR ^m , and let (u) be the greatest eigenvalue ofA(u). Recently, there has been interest in calculating (u), the subdifferential of atu, which is useful for both the construction of efficient algorithms for the minimization of (u) and the sensitivity analysis of (u), namely, the perturbation theory of (u). In this paper, more generally, we investigate the Legendre-Fenchel conjugate function of (·) and the -subdifferential (u) of atu. Then, we discuss relations between the set (u) and some perturbation bounds for (u).The author is deeply indebted to Professor J. B.
